Hey Jim & Jess, Most feed stores that have poultry supplies carry ground oyster shell as a supliment for domestic birds as a nutrient source for strengthening their eggs shells. I used to use it in our garden in the soil as a nutrient source for our Brussels sprouts. I'm wondering if you could use it in your plaster as an egg shell substitute. Just thinking. Hey Jim and Jess, your thumbnail is a great shot of jess showing her strength (art and the willingness to go up to the top of your structure). I think once you get the lime wash on all of the house it's gonna look great. In the Mediterranean you see a lot of buildings that have been plastered with a lime whitewash. I have never given it much thought but maybe you guys should have gone on a trip and talk to a few people about how they do it. I think most of the houses are made with rocks and every so many years they just add a new coat of lime wash.
/joke! “Quick! We need more dog hair for the lime plaster! We need to adopt another dog STAT!” /joke! Seriously though I love your videos and the work you do gives me some hope that my old ass could move my family out there and start fresh.
Yup, Rock and Cement (Plaster) needs a protective coating....but, maybe you will think about that later...after you see the cement around the rocks....pull away...
The top of any roof has the least exposure to rain. It's the lower part of a roof that gets the greatest exposure. For instance a simple gable roof may get only an inch of rain on it, but that rain flows down to lower roof. This means an inch of rain at the peak of roof, then flowing down one side of gable roof for perhaps 14' will have 168 inches of water flow across the last line of shingles. Sometimes in lower income areas, you then will see the bottom half of a gable roof with new shingles, to replace all the eroded ones, but the upper half of roof's shingles still used, since they've had much less water flow across them than the lower shingles. It's the poor persons way of keeping their roof functional at a lower cost.
Until the dome is completely covered with plaster and stones you can make some small changes to guide the water in a more controlled direction by: 1) Adding a edge to three sides of the working platforms so the water runs down on the edge which is away from the dome. 2) Cles the gap between the dome and your water capturing rim so most of the water will end up in you capture tod with the repaired pipe to it.
With all of the work Jessica put into the peak, it's good to know that it's holding up. If I were to want to use this plaster, where would I go to get Crew hair 🤔
Nice video. It looks like you have gotten a lot of monsoons this year. What is the water level at in your Cistern? Another question, In the unlikely event that you get a lot of rain do you have somewhere for the excess to run off if your cistern and other water storage fills all of the way up?
If I remember correctly, in the last video ("It caved in") they said *all* the water tanks were full after that 1.5" monsoon except for the one outside their work area by their camper. I remember seeing a bunch of overflow above the cistern. As for excess, they have a few infiltration basins for plants and such, following a natural elevation grade (2 videos before that "caved in" video). After that, it's simply natural land, letting it flow where it may. These 2 have definitely been water-minded, and are lucky to live in a state where rainwater harvesting is allowed. In that infiltration basin video they talk about it, where certain states prohibit it, or regulate it heavily.
@@brandonlaird6876 Thank You Brandon. I didn't hear them say that the Cistern was completely full. I believe the spillover comes from the two 2000 gallon tanks. 1" of rain on 1000 sq ft area I believe is 600 gallons. The last reading that I saw them give on the Cistern was 7" and they said the capacity was in excess of 14000 gallons. They have had considerable Monsoon activity this year but I believe the average for that area is 8-10" per year. If all of their containment was full, they would have to disconnect or divert the rain collection pipe or risk overflowing their cistern which could undermine their rock reinforcement around the top. 600 gallons of water dumping around their catchment surface would cause them some problems especially for their pup. Thanks again for the conversation.
