Nice job on the peaceful cohab w rattlesnakes. Besides basic human decency, it's way safer for you if they don't think you're out to kill them. One safety suggestion - put a handle on the bucket lid. Don't have your fingers around the rim, just center a drawer pull on the outside of the lid so your hands can stay out of sight, and you can use the lid as a shield when capping or upcapping the bucket. I've got a setup like this and it's a real step up from just the original lid (mine is a screw on). Love your channel, best luck!

Beautiful the cactus are in bloom, love that bird that's giving a commentary. Gorgeous little green toad I found one next to one of my bean plants it has been very hot and dry here in the UK and that was a sure way of getting some water and some visiting bugs, this one is different and plump I love toads and frogs. I was going to say the same thing Only thing I would add is to add some gravel under the pipe and cover it with screen to keep the bottom of the hole from filling up with dart because there is usually an escape valve under the valve itself and does leak water when you turn it off and on. at least that's my experience replacing the water spickets on my property all below the frost line. that were not done originally by the prior overs. of course your pipe and valve is way bigger that what I have worked on.

To help you to turn that valve on and off without getting inside the hole, take a 5' or 6' length of some 2" or so PVC pipe and notch the end to fit the knob. That way you can turn if from outside the hole. Make a T-handle on top. You could put a hole in the cover and just leave the PVC in and mark it on and off too then. You can use some of the scrap OSB plywood and use them as pieces across middle of your new box to help keep it from caving in again.
A job worth doing is worth doing right. You guys are learning great lessons and sharing your journey so that others don’t make the same mistakes. That has amazing value.
Put about 6 inches of rock under the balve. Encase about a cubic foot around the valve and rock in something sturdy. Then run a length of large pvc up to the surface. Backfill around and use the T-handle method. I've got that setup and it's going on 50 years old.

I am so glad to see Uvi getting to play off the leash. I love dogs. I was thinking my dogs would run loose if i lived there, but then I remembered my neighbors dog got killed by a rattlesnake bite.
We had braces on our basement walls and the clay ground still managed to move them. We had to dig and put gravel in around our foundation. Maybe since you have clay, putting gravel around that box will secure it from caving in.
I'm not a desert person, but man, you got yourselves some great sunsets. And, uh, rattlesnakes. Then again, we have a native rattler here in Central NY, so I shouldn't talk. 😂

If not, you might consider a few more downspouts. With how hard the rain can come down there, you don't want the weight of a bunch of water bearing down on the eaves. So much rain in the desert. just a suggestion buddy. why don't you use a 12-in Sono tube to drop all the way down over the valve handle itself and then backfill that tube in the ground and then use a t handle with a fork end to go turn off and on the valve as needed. that way instead of a huge vault you have just a small tube that would be easy to keep clear. just my two cents
Nice job on the box / possible lil root cellar :). That water valve lid might fly in a heavy wind. Some way to secure it down might be a great idea. I mean I've seen heavy winds life stuff and toss it you'd have never thought possible. If that's flying it could slice like a sword too.

Hi guys. If you do another shut underground just use a 8”-10” pvc pipe cut to fit. Then use another piece of pvc with a notch cut in to stick down to close and open valve. Then you have only a8”-10” protrusion sticking out of the ground. Keep up the hard work.

Good job with the little pipe house. Maybe it would be a better idea to extend a piece of wood from the lid frame out to the end of the metal top so you won't be bending the metal each time you pull the top off?
I hate to say this, but, that box will rot just as quick. The best way to get access to your water valve is to use a 12 inch PVC pipe that will go over the valve, notch it to fit around the pipe. I make the pipe stick above the ground about 12-16 inches, then use an end cap as the lid. Make a long water key to turn the water valve. I did notice you have a round valve, You may need to replace it with a PVC ball valve. Another option is to install a city water meter inside a plastic barrel with 2 holes drill out on each side. Then use the lid on the barrel as the roof. It's water tight. A water meter would give you information like how much water you're using during any amount of time you would like to know.

Cistern looks good. Where I wanted it to be, I would use concrete. Keeps the rain water out, the mud out and makes a solid. Protects the valve, pipes, and structure. Cob takes way to long to dry out with all that rain. On the house itself, I would repair with stucco. Just fill in the holes with it, and blend it out. I have seen cob domes, houses, sheds, and such. They all got stuccoed. Some were aircrete sprayed. It keeps the water out! Doc

I guess it would've dissolved if you made the box with sandbags.. Maybe some draining ditches.. Berm & sealed would help

hey jim. have you thought about using a pvc pipe, say a 6" pipe standing up over that valve with a screw on cap. just need to make a rebar T to reach down there to turn the valve like the would in the big citys
Simple _|’’’|_ ,4 L connection and place the valve on the top at ground level. Then fill it in with dirt. Just do it in a couple of months when the water is gone. Looks great by the way.
Try using a blue water drum to replace the valve volt. Cut out the bottom to let the pipe and valve slide in to the bottom. Keep the black screw on lid as you access pint.

If the box that replaces the old one is wood like the old one, then you'll be doing it again! Personally I'd make a wooden mold and make your own reinforced concrete box sections. Short term nowhere near the savings of using wood. Longterm it's done and you grandchildren will need to inspect it. Overstated? I know! But definitely food for thought. I just had an idea you may consider. Actually, I saw it in another RUclips video. A couple living in Norway built a geodesic dome over their cob home to protect it from the weather. So, their three story cob home remains unaffected by the extreme weather. And they use the space between their cob home exterior walls and the geo dome walls as a greenhouse and patio space. If you research geo dome construction, you will find DIY geo domes will cut building kit geo domes cost probably up to 70%. Check out Paul Robinson's you tube videos. Basically for geo domes you need struts, hubs, and a dome cover. Robinson has a video on machine pressing the ends of metal tubes to create the hubs. Metal last longer than wood struts. Pacific Domes uses similar metal struts, which serve as hubs as well. Consider checking them out too. All the best. Love you guys!

A suggestion for everyone's safety, I would wrap the edges of the box's metal roof with some pool noodles, cut them on one side and then install... maybe you thought of something else?
Glad you spotted those critters and got them out of the way. Especially that snake... You might have to find and seal up any other holes along the bottom of your structures, reduce those places that snakes might think could make a nice snake den...
Since you already installed the box use old motor oil to seal the wood from rotting out. A better option would of been a 10" or 12" dia scrap pvc pipe cut off from public works. Cut to fit over the valve and pipe filled with a little cement/mortar half way up the valve body to keep water out. Pvc comes up to 8" above ground level with a cap. With a valve stem attached to the valve and handle up top for easy reach. This will keep the valve dry from corrosion, keep the critters out and nothing rots. 😎👍👍
14:16 Man that was an easy supper!! Snake Bite Chili comes to mind. And a free hat band if you salt the hide down. Fun. Chili made with "pulled" rattle snake, and lots of hot peppers to taste. I use to cheat though. A friend would send me the flash frozen snake meat in one pound packages from a snake roundup in west Texas and I just had to thaw and cook. Once cooled I would pull it with two forks to make shreds about an inch long from the cross section rounds. Lightly brown and start building the chili from there. Great stuff and very few knew it was actual rattle snake. They thought the name was from the peppers and chilies I used to make it fierce. Would pop a sweat on your forehead in most cases.

WOW! so many things that water can damage! I would have not thought so much about water when first moving to the dessert... but hey it's important, because when it RAINS... it POURS!!!
You put such an amazing amount of effort into the valve box.... have you seen the technique of using a sleeve over the valve and using a proper shut of valve that insert down the sleeve to turn the valve on and off.. While I admire you journey I see you both putting such a lot of energy into each and every project you do. Your journey has been great but very very slow if you can I suggest the use of equipment for digging moving and hauling. I do so much enjoy watching the progress so please don't take me wrong in being critical. To be critical is a latin word thats means throwing like on a subject that provides another perspective of how things are progressing.

The valve is down there in the hole which can be protected by a vertical pipe and a water key to open and close the valve.

Good job with the little pipe house. Maybe it would be a better idea to extend a piece of wood from the lid frame out to the end of the metal top so you won't be bending the metal each time you pull the top off?
I hate to say this, but, that box will rot just as quick. The best way to get access to your water valve is to use a 12 inch PVC pipe that will go over the valve, notch it to fit around the pipe. I make the pipe stick above the ground about 12-16 inches, then use an end cap as the lid. Make a long water key to turn the water valve. I did notice you have a round valve, You may need to replace it with a PVC ball valve.
Another option is to install a city water meter inside a plastic barrel with 2 holes drill out on each side. Then use the lid on the barrel as the roof. It's water tight. A water meter would give you information like how much water you're using during any amount of time you would like to know.

Cistern looks good. Where I wanted it to be, I would use concrete. Keeps the rain water out, the mud out and makes a solid. Protects the valve, pipes, and structure. Cob takes way to long to dry out with all that rain. On the house itself, I would repair with stucco. Just fill in the holes with it, and blend it out.
I have seen cob domes, houses, sheds, and such. They all got stuccoed. Some were aircrete sprayed. It keeps the water out!

It's hard enough to build.. And rebuilding just makes it sad. I guess it would've dissolved if you made the box with sandbags.. Maybe some draining ditches.. Berm & sealed would help

hey jim. have you thought about using a pvc pipe, say a 6" pipe standing up over that valve with a screw on cap. just need to make a rebar T to reach down there to turn the valve like the would in the big citys
Simple _|’’’|_ ,4 L connection and place the valve on the top at ground level. Then fill it in with dirt. Just do it in a couple of months when the water is gone. Looks great by the way.

Try using a blue water drum to replace the valve volt. Cut out the bottom to let the pipe and valve slide in to the bottom. Keep the black screw on lid as you access pint.

If the box that replaces the old one is wood like the old one, then you'll be doing it again! Personally I'd make a wooden mold and make your own reinforced concrete box sections. Short term nowhere near the savings of using wood. Longterm it's done and you grandchildren will need to inspect it. Overstated? I know! But definitely food for thought. I just had an idea you may consider. Actually, I saw it in another RUclips video. A couple living in Norway built a geodesic dome over their cob home to protect it from the weather. So, their three story cob home remains unaffected by the extreme weather. And they use the space between their cob home exterior walls and the geo dome walls as a greenhouse and patio space. If you research geo dome construction, you will find DIY geo domes will cut building kit geo domes cost probably up to 70%. Check out Paul Robinson's you tube videos. Basically for geo domes you need struts, hubs, and a dome cover. Robinson has a video on machine pressing the ends of metal tubes to create the hubs. Metal last longer than wood struts. Pacific Domes uses similar metal struts, which serve as hubs as well. Consider checking them out too. All the best. Love you guys!

A suggestion for everyone's safety, I would wrap the edges of the box's metal roof with some pool noodles, cut them on one side and then install... maybe you thought of something else?

Glad you spotted those critters and got them out of the way. Especially that snake... You might have to find and seal up any other holes along the bottom of your structures, reduce those places that snakes might think could make a nice snake den...
Since you already installed the box use old motor oil to seal the wood from rotting out. A better option would of been a 10" or 12" dia scrap pvc pipe cut off from public works. Cut to fit over the valve and pipe filled with a little cement/mortar half way up the valve body to keep water out. Pvc comes up to 8" above ground level with a cap. With a valve stem attached to the valve and handle up top for easy reach. This will keep the valve dry from corrosion, keep the critters out and nothing rots. 😎👍👍
14:16 Man that was an easy supper!! Snake Bite Chili comes to mind. And a free hat band if you salt the hide down. Fun. Chili made with "pulled" rattle snake, and lots of hot peppers to taste. I use to cheat though. A friend would send me the flash frozen snake meat in one pound packages from a snake roundup in west Texas and I just had to thaw and cook. Once cooled I would pull it with two forks to make shreds about an inch long from the cross section rounds. Lightly brown and start building the chili from there. Great stuff and very few knew it was actual rattle snake. They thought the name was from the peppers and chilies I used to make it fierce. Would pop a sweat on your forehead in most cases.

You put such an amazing amount of effort into the valve box.... have you seen the technique of using a sleeve over the valve and using a proper shut of valve that insert down the sleeve to turn the valve on and off.. While I admire you journey I see you both putting such a lot of energy into each and every project you do. Your journey has been great but very very slow if you can I suggest the use of equipment for digging moving and hauling. I do so much enjoy watching the progress so please don't take me wrong in being critical. To be critical is a latin word thats means throwing like on a subject that provides another perspective of how things are progressing.
