    Things I have done while watching Ashton’s videos:
    - Made a long furby
    - Cooked eggs benedict
    - Cleaned my bedside table
    - Changed my sheets
    - Organized my cool looking sock collection
    - Done drag make-up for my ex boyfriend.
    I hope you enjoyed

    I actually use uh and um when texting! sometimes it's for emphasis on something I'm unsure about, other times I'm writing out what I'm thinking as I'm thinking it. so I don't think it's entirely odd, just not very common!

    ok so about "jumping at a lgbt therapist" thing, I did jump at it the first time, and turns out she was only good with the first 3 letters, she would not use my pronouns or name. so now I have issues with getting a therapist cus I don't feel that I can trust somebody like that. so ya there are folks who feel unsure or unsafe speaking with someone, but yes I think this is a more rare thing.

    Ummm, I sometimes use "umm" in text, but that's in a jokey or sarcastic way
    Also, I'm dyslexic and read real slow so like books with small chapters make me feel like I'm making progress

    I feel like the hesitance towards therapy makes sense especially if you're early into accepting your trans identity. I haven't read the book so I don't know how it's handled but I personally struggle with opening up to therapists a lot even if I know they're supportive. To me it's just a vulnerable state to be in regardless of acceptance and that's something I'm working through but it's still a thing I and likely other trans people experience.

    I will say that with the therapy part, I’ve been very unsure about seeing therapists because I have a really hard time talking about and expressing my emotions, even when I did see a therapist for a while. My anxiety is so bad that the thought of seeing a therapist kinda makes my anxiety spike up really high even though I know therapy is a good and healthy thing.
    Idk, thats just my thoughts and experiences.

    did you ever look into berlin queer history and how it was intertwined with anarchist movements? there was a gay magazine called "der eigene" (possibly the first of its kind) which is a direct reference to max stirners dialectical egoist work. (it might have been what inspired emma goldmans egoism too) i figured it might bring you some joy and new insights, as most political philosophy classic stuff on your goodreads so far seems to be marx and lenin.

      wrt to Ben being unsure about therapy, yeah, that was me for sure. I got the opportunity to go to an LGBT support group and it took a mental breakdown for me to get myself to that support group. Therapy is something that really scared me and I really relate to Ben's fear around it (also that support group did end up being a little bit of a wash bc I was one of the only poc and my therapists were not equipped to speak well to a Black and Mexican nonbinary person). At this point I would love a gender therapist and I totally understand why people would want therapy so much, but it felt very real for me to see Ben's reluctance

    ahh okay i have a lot to say so:
    i personally dont like "enby" as a descriptor for myself however i didnt mind the use of it in the book as it was a fellow nonbinary person using it. (i do have a problem when someone *specifically* addresses me though. esp used by the cis)
    i do actually use "uh" and "um" through text, for me it makes the conversation feel more real, even through a screen. but thats just me asdfljgk
    and, for me having short chapters helps my reading experience. mainly because of my adhd, but also because i get more of a sense of accomplishment. like "hell yeah, i read 11 chapters already" which keeps me motivated to finish the book.
    also, as someone on the ace and aro spectrum, i didnt like that comment either and wished it was just phrased differently as to not blanket statement the whole of ace and aro people. however i doubt that was the authors intention, mainly bc i hear shit like that from well meaning allo people all the time.
    all in all this book was absolutely brilliant. i felt so so represented, through ben and miriam. i saw myself through ben and their struggles like ive never seen myself through media before. i cannot rave about this enough but ill just say that its by far my favourite book buy

    I read this book. I liked it, but I wasn't in love with it. I know that using the word "enby" is such a small thing, but it did make me enjoy the book less because, as an older person, I do feel like the term is cutesy and it comes off as feminine to me. I'm ok with younger - or any age - people using it for themselves, but I would not use it for myself and I had an "ugh" moment when I read that. However, that's a gut reaction, and, rationally, I know that someone in high school, like Ben, might use that word without thinking. I also used to work very close to Raleigh (RTP), so that part was kind of cool. I also thought it was realistic that there was racial diversity at Ben's school because that area of NC is about 30% Black which is a lot of people. I wonder, did you ever meet the author?

    Yes people do type out "um" and other hesitations. I know I do, and so do a lot of my friends.
    As a regular reader of YA, I was a bit put off by you saying that the writing is "good enough for a YA book" as if the age category should have any baring on the prose style. I've read YA with simplistic prose, YA with beautiful prose, YA with pretentious purple prose, and more besides. And I've read a similar range of prose in adult novels, including quite a few that are very simplistic. So I suppose what I'm really asking is: what did you mean by that?

    • @graveyardpansy
      @graveyardpansy  5 лет назад +3

      ah yeah i should’ve explained that better I’m sorry!! i mean that bc what i usually read is political philosophy/science and memoirs, I’m used to writing styles that’re a lot more formal or complex. “good enough” probably wasn’t the best description of it.

      @badreanna 5 лет назад +1

      Im very confused too. I get not using it to refer to yourself but actively not liking people using a common shorthand? I've never heard of this before. The critique that enby was used as a umbrella term was odd too... it literally is a shorthand of a umbrella term.

    • @graveyardpansy
      @graveyardpansy  5 лет назад +5

      as i said in the video not all nonbinary ppl see it that way, but because it’s essentially a nonbinary equivalent to “boy” or “girl,” some find it uncomfortable when they’re referred to that way.
