3:33 Huge error in this video. I am not no navy seal by all means, but if you have your barrel sticking out that far and the person is on the other side of the wall from where you’re standing, he can quickly grab that muzzle and wrestle you for that gun. DJ and Cole two navy seals here on this platform said the same thing about this same scenario. Never show your muzzle because it gives out your location and puts you in jeopardy.
@@chltmdwp how do you know there are multiple people and one got upstairs without him noticing? Just because you heard the noise downstairs doesn’t mean there’s someone already upstairs. I don’t run a shotgun for home defense because I don’t own any guns, that changes at the end of the month because I’m saving for a glock 19 build for my 21st birthday.
Even just a standard gen3 glock 19 is plenty. I got a glock 23 the day I turned 21 and wish i got the 19. They are great for the range, the house, and the car but a bit big for concealed carry unless maybe if you are a bigger guy. I’m built like a toothpick so it’s not realistic to conceal. The 23 has a very snappy recoil. 9mm is easier and cheaper to shoot. Any gun that can take 9mm+P ammo is more than enough for self defense.
@@justanordinarydude6097 that I did. But I’m prioritizing saving up for my own place so I’ve just been training with it stock and not worrying about the build yet.
@@Lancersilvacongrats, and luckily 9mm is stupid cheap, around .27 cents per round on psa website. Get some snap caps and all that stuff but it’s a good tool man so I’m glad for you
I run all three for home defense. Nothing wrong with some diversity. of course rifle and shotgun not at the same time but they’re both easily accessible if I was to reach for either one 👍🏽
One thing I like to recommend to people for self defense besides from having your defensive weapon by your bedside is you should also have by your bedside some ear protection. I have the Walker Razors, so with those I can turn them on while on my head and amplify my hearing while I protect my hearing too. Its a great tool to have to hear what the hell is going on around your house. It also does not hurt to have a suppressor to add on to your weapon to extend the ability in protecting your hearing just a bit more.😉
Hearing protection is a very good idea if you have the time to retreive them, get them on and turn them on. I do try to practice the above as much as I can. However, if time or circumstances do not allow, solve the problem and you can deal with any hearing issues tomorrow or when you and your family are safe. I have two units that I use. The Razors and MTS Supreme Pro X. I find the MTS allow for directional sound location much better than the Razors. I am not sure if the Razors allow you to be able to tell the origin of sound or not? They don't seem to for me? The MTS unit lets me determine where the sound came from and protect my hearing and bearing better for me. However, I would rather have the Razors on than nothing as they do an excellent job of hearing protection.
There's a good argument for those Turkish bullpup shotguns; they are a lot handier than a standard-layout shotgun in confined spaces. Being able to clear a doorway without having to take the stock off your shoulder is useful. And the weight-balance makes it easy to shoulder it with one hand, allowing you to use your free hand to open doors/call police/ect.
Yea I have the Tokarev TBP M12 and I love it. Compact enough to easily maneuver in tight hallways. M-lok and p rail for attachments and can be found for under $400
@@Valhalla_Heathen Apparently they don't hold up very well long term (around 15k rounds or so), and some of them don't cycle great with low-brass loads, but having a couple 5rd mags of your home defense load of choice is pretty effective. I use #4 turkey shot. The 10rd mags you can get are a bit bulky and don't usually feed well, but they are also an option if you can get them to work.
The only thing I had for home defense at the start of the pandemic/riots/election season of 2020 was a New England Firearms Pardner. It's a single barrel, break-open 20 gauge shotgun. I regretted selling it because I've had that shotgun since I was a child, but I needed something more suitable for home defense at the time and didn't have that much money. I traded in the Pardner for a 12 guage pump shotgun. When my ARts and crafts project was finally finished, that 12 guage was traded in to take a chunk out of the Vortex SPARC red dot sight's price tag and that rifle has been my home defense gun ever since.
Absolutely awesome video, very informative, Im 72yo woman that would love to get a gun for safety in home ,but no clue what kind I could use??❤ thank you and God bless all of you!
Consider finding a home self defense course taught by a qualified trainer. They should spend time on hardening your house, firearms selection, ammunition, etc. A 20 gauge shotgun or a .22 rifle would be good places to start.
Love these training style videos as well as ur gun reviews. I want to get a CCW and your videos help me be prepared on what i need to know having zero family members that have a firearm. I want to protect those close to me and i really appreciate your content!
Just a couple of thoughts on the training. If you are going to stay upstairs, I would use everything possible to give yourself the advantage. Open that closet door so it is in the walkway right off the stairs and give a little more cover. It also lets you know when they are encroaching because the door can be seen moving. Then take cover in the little area next to the closet door to help protect yourself some more.
I would recommend high ready over low ready if you have small kids. It also gives you more control over your gun. Bringing it over the shoulder is basically a non-shooting position and easier to take if someone does get their hand on it around the corner.
It is absolutely a shooting position. It is known as “short stocking”. It allows for a compressed shooting solution with a long gun in a CQB environment. If you use “push-pull” technique there is still plenty of recoil mitigation too. I’ve seen some even advocate for short stocking ARs while room clearing vs high/low ready.
I always enjoy your videos, keep up the good work and fight the good fight for gun rights not just in the US, but for all law abiding gun owners all over the world.
I appreciate him mentioning that clearing a building works differently if you're solo. The risk factor of moving out of a secured position when there's no-one to watch your back is very bad.
A lot of home invasion videos that I've seen show multiple preps scattering in all directions really fast. Just because you heard the clumsy one downstairs, doesn't mean quiet ones aren't already upstairs. Most high value items are kept in the master bedroom or office. The instructor never respected his six. I get the positional dominance that the top of the stairs gives, but you are at increased threat getting there from places the perps could already be at on the second floor, or up from the stairwell as he walked past it to clear the 2nd floor. Retreating with the others to the closet where the shot gun was seems far wiser,. You posting at the closet door with only the shotgun, a small portion of your arm, and your right eye exposed, and the others down and out of sight behind you, would be far more defensible. The perp would have to open and pass through the bedroom door, the fatal funnel, and since he doesn't expect you to be there because you haven't exposed yourself by flashing flashlights everywhere, and because he's amped up and on the clock, he won't be expecting you, you can wreck him with the shotgun instantaneously, with the rest of the perps likely scattering like cochroachs. All this without exposing yourself, the others, or your position to the bad guys. Your male ego may not like giving up it's moment of glory, but your family not having to bury you might be a good trade off. It is good to pratice clearing your house, both from your perspective, then from the perps perspective, then back again, is vital, in case you have go to someone or something in another room, but room, or building clearing, especially by yourself, is a bitch, especially if you give the perp any idea where you are. Also consider lighting. You can set up little plug-in night lights that will backlight the perps but not you. Inside security cameras like Ring act as alarms, but also let you know how many and where the perps are. You have to weigh their advantage against the potential loss of privacy and other issues if your system gets hacked by criminals on both sides of the government. (Government v non-government actors. It's a shame this even has to be brought up these days.)
I was concerned that he never paid any attention to the stairwell to his back that was open to downstairs, if an armed intruder happened to be at the bottom stairs, he’d be dead
Also that half wall makes much better cover than that post and that corner by the bedroom door would be one of the better vantage points down the stairs as you would immediately be above there head and while they accended would probably have their back to you.
For me.. it depends on which room i happened to be. 2 rifles in bedroom, glock 17 in bathroom, 12g panzer M2, living room has glock 21, and my carry gun.. g19

A very diplomatic way of saying that when the cops show up there's every possibility that they'll be panicky trigger happy amateurs screaming unreasonable orders at the homeowner.
My instant night firearm is a a double action revolver, pull the trigger it goes bang. My night shotgun is stored with the safety off, cocked and a snap cap in the pipe. Pull the trigger, rack a live round and it’s hot. I don’t have to mess with the safety or slide release to get it in firing mode.
I have a bull pup 12 gauge shotgun and a .45 acp plus my edc and A ar -15 pistol but I do love my 12 gauge thanks for the tips I’m single and live in a single story home. Great information
Thank you for showing these drills. I've always believed the rack of a shotgun is one and only warning to anyone that enters my home. But he is right that so long as the irreplaceable aspects of my life are safe and secured, the rest is just stuff. I can buy a new TV, Xbox, and Computer. Downside is that this drill won't work for my single floor 7 room home.
Maybe I'm just not paying a high-end enough insurance plan, but my insurance doesn't just magically have a free identical replacement for every single possible thing I own... I mean even if they DID somehow have an identical copy of everything in my house I would probably have some very major questions at that point.
Best advice I can give to home defense with a shotgun. Get a Nam era claymore bag. They where made to hold two claymores with a shoulder strap. Fill one pocket with slugs, one pocket with buckshot. Grab it anytime you grab the the gun for home defense, or drills. You never know how many people there are in an attack, what if your gun tube runs out and you haven't eliminated the multiple threats. Throw the claymore bag on an you're good to go. Make sure to practice shooting moving and reloading on your shotgun.

Edit: after watching large animal safety training in Alaska taught me all that. I didn't realize how good the .gov training was back then.
The biggest advantage that a shotgun has over an rifle or handgun is that from 25 feet away, improved cylinder #4 shot it's going to have a 8-10 inch spread and the noise isn't a deafening as a high powered rifle. added benefit is that you don't have an over penetration problem. The round won't penetrate 2 sheets of drywall and a batt of fiberglass insulation. Having fired both inside of a AR and a 12 gauge inside a structure, the explosion and muzzle flash on a 223 is deafening . Remington made a folding stock for the 870 Wingmaster shotgun. It's short so no issue with clearing a room.
This is why AR pistols are perfect for home protection you can easily clear tight spaces and be cleanly accurate and precise without damaging your home. A shotgun is cool but I don’t think it’s the best option .
@@OGsDangerShow And if you put a suppressor on an AR pistol it's almost a carbine anyway. Better to keep electronic muffs handy, and they'll help you hear better as a bonus.
Why allow them to get inside before you act? Outdoor motion detection sensors are a must around the entire permitter of your home so that you are alerted as they are approaching and before they enter. Most home invaders take minutes before actually breaking in. Meet / surprise / attack / give them firepower before they ever get in. The threat should remain outside.
Yeah that's the main "loophole" I'm not a fan on with castle doctrine - I'd love to live on a large property so any would-be criminal has to 'cross the line' a few dozen meters down the yard.
@@precisedime1377 To be honest I had to look up castle doctrine. I live in Oakland, California and I can tell you this... I am firing the Glock if they appear at any entry point the moment a door knob is wiggled, door kicked, window is broken or attempted to be pushed open. I will proudly deal with the ridiculous ultra democrat legal system we have here alive while my wife and kids will be unharmed. Motion detection is the way to go as each sensor loudly alerts us with different a sounds allowing me head straight to wherever they arrive without having to clear rooms as shown here. This seems quite reactive vs. pro-active especially considering we are heavy sleepers and invaders are quiet.

I live in a ground floor apartment with my brother. So we don’t have stairs to separate us from an intruder. But we both have separate walk-in closets big enough to barricade ourselves in. And I do have a shotgun along with a few handguns. But the shotgun is 70yrs old and not really meant for home defense. But it will still get the job done as it is a 16ga Mossberg 190 Bolt Action.
So, I totally read that thumbnail caption as "cleaning" and not "clearing". Couple that with the thumbnail itself appearing to be a guy looking at that hard to reach corner of the living room celling, I was getting excited that Colion was going to introduce a new shell that would safely blast away cobwebs with air or something. I am disappoint.
Little late to this video but just noticed both instances the two run throughs backs where to the half wall leading down the stairs not once did either of you check the stairs or mentioned checking them and both are left exposed to possible ambush from the bottom of the stairs where the intruder could be heading or waiting for you once he hears the shotgun racked or the bedroom door opened ... just wanted to bring this to the attention so others can keep this in mind when they are either training or put in this position.
Have my home defenses spread around the house. Shotgun on top of the keys of piano with covered keys. Have a 9MM stuck under the coffee table with a magnet. From my recline chair I can reach it with my right arm. Not telling for the rest.

The exercise was good for the solid railing around the stairs, but if you have an open railing with posts, it might be better not to expose yourself by clearing the loft, but rather positioning yourself towards the stairs, so an intruder would present their head and back as they ascend the stairs. clearing a building with anything that big is more trouble than its worth. While I believe your should be able to do it as a American citizen, I would still rather clear a house with something like a handgun that is less of an encumbrance than that of a handgun. Duly noted. Got to change your frame of mind. You’ve achieved success. You have the advantage, upstairs, armed and have a phone and are communicating with outside help which is en route. Don’t be so willing to jump into the fire.

Amen to that advise

DJ and Cole are awesome to watch. Those guys are very informative on close quarters combat
Got that info from Mike Glover
Out of context, the guy heard noises from the first floor, he is not room clearing so in this situation, it's fine.
@@chltmdwp how do you know there are multiple people and one got upstairs without him noticing? Just because you heard the noise downstairs doesn’t mean there’s someone already upstairs.
In situations like this, you have to make all possible scenarios count and at the end of the day this is bad muzzle practice.
Definitely top 5 guntuber on the platform. He does things for the 2A movement that’s just invaluable. Everyone should share his videos .
Please more videos like this with skills of room clearing etc. Or more expert instruction. I think it's awesome and will help with the less experienced gun owners
Any gun that can take 9mm+P ammo is more than enough for self defense.
also get a surefire light for it
Did you get that Glock 19 brother

One thing I like to recommend to people for self defense besides from having your defensive weapon by your bedside is you should also have by your bedside some ear protection. I have the Walker Razors, so with those I can turn them on while on my head and amplify my hearing while I protect my hearing too. Its a great tool to have to hear what the hell is going on around your house. It also does not hurt to have a suppressor to add on to your weapon to extend the ability in protecting your hearing just a bit more.😉
@andrewtaylor7269 Technically true, your hearing would be protected.
I go with both. Muffs and a can with subs. Make sure wife and/or kids know where to go and what to do
Walkers razor muffs are good, I like the pair I have a lot. I'll put mine on when I have to go fire some shots at coyotes in the yard.
@andrewtaylor7269 "FRONT TOWARD ENEMY"
Got to get me a Turkish bullpup, they’re so freaking amazing! 🤘🏻
I actually do run an ATI bulldog for home defense. The short package is very nice.
19’s can be used as monopod🤷🏼♂️
Videos like this can save people lives keep up the good work buddy
Colion,
You are awesome man!
Thanks for making this video, because not everyone uses an AR for Home Defense. This is valuable info for sure.
I would have run a shotgun for home defense but I lost all my guns in a boating accident
If it’s time to lose it it’s time to use it we didn’t lose shit
I sold all mine in the Chicago buy back

I only have a flintlock musket gun well had one but sadly it got lost in a boating accident as well.🤕
This was great! I have shotguns and handguns as well. So this was informative in case i run with shotguns. Thank you for the content.
I hope you know how truly appreciated you are Colion. It'd be awesome to get to shoot with you one day
I always enjoy your videos, keep up the good work and fight the good fight for gun rights not just in the US, but for all law abiding gun owners all over the world.
Wow that open starway is a nightmare at the top while clearing with a longgun. Practice runs are key in your home!! Thanks for the vid Sir!!!
For me.. it depends on which room i happened to be. 2 rifles in bedroom, glock 17 in bathroom, 12g panzer M2, living room has glock 21, and my carry gun.. g19

Great video. When he said stay up there and don't complicate things. Great information.

Safe basic principle applies, gather your loved ones and hold down a hallway or something
Thank you for bringing this to the public. I run a shotgun for home defense and I learned a few things. Again thanks
I think a shout of "HONEY GET MY RATTLER AND THE LUBE IT'S TIME!" would be a far more alarming warning to an intruder.
Maybe I'm just not paying a high-end enough insurance plan, but my insurance doesn't just magically have a free identical replacement for every single possible thing I own...
I mean even if they DID somehow have an identical copy of everything in my house I would probably have some very major questions at that point.
I feel this is a good lesson regardless of the choice of weapon for defense, same principles can be applied to using a rifle or handgun
Great job. Would like to see a part two going over what to do when your family sleeps on multiple levels of a house. Thanks!

Don't run a shotgun I'd mine. Why struggle in tight spaces when your range is 15ft. Also just cause it can work doesn't mean it has too
@@alexgrinage I lost my guns In an unfortunate boating accident. If I'm good in 4 more years I can have my god given 2nd amendment right uninfringed.
But bet your ass if TSHTF or there's an anarchy/police strike or ovverran. I will be armed with.22 with lots and lots of ammo. There wont be ammo after a month if that scenario lasts a while. .22 is best way to carry maximum rounds.
And of course my Remington 12 gauge.
@AnonMedic that's not true If s*** hits the fan, how would you run out of rounds? Are you clearing houses. Let's say you have 2-3 thousand rounds. You literally make no sense

I use a pistol right now but have owed shotguns in the past he's giving good advice.
Pistol seems much more mobile for clearing the house. Shotgun is great for holding a hallway or a pinned down position though.
It takes a deputies 20 minutes to get from one end of the county to the next end and only 1 or 2 are covering 325 sq. miles.
FYI: Your own your own

Where I live law enforcement could be half an hour away, they can't be depended on at all.
"IF they show up" is always a great statement.
Ah, so you live somewhere between "everywhere" and "anywhere"
I really like your how to videos and the tips, tricks, training videos. The go well with your reviews and 2A content .
Kel Tec KSG, 15 shells 👌
I use a baofeng HT, 50’ of LMR 400 cable & an Ed fong antenna mounted on the roof…it’s been working great for 2yrs, as my GMRS base station:)
This is why AR pistols are perfect for home protection you can easily clear tight spaces and be cleanly accurate and precise without damaging your home. A shotgun is cool but I don’t think it’s the best option .
Your ears are done after using an AR pistol indoors. Enjoy the silence (for the rest of your life). 😬
@@OGsDangerShow And if you put a suppressor on an AR pistol it's almost a carbine anyway. Better to keep electronic muffs handy, and they'll help you hear better as a bonus.
That looked like good advice. The problem is 99% of the time you hear something downstairs and it turns out to be nothing at all.

Shotguns are my backup for inside the home defense however a full-size quality 9MM with night sights and a light is the supreme choice in my opinion
clearing a building with anything that big is more trouble than its worth. While I believe your should be able to do it as a American citizen, I would still rather clear a house with something like a handgun that is less of an encumbrance than that of a handgun. I hated clearing house with an M4 in iraq because it was always getting caught on things, bumping into something, or knocking things over, when I wouldve just perferred something lighter and easier to handle, like an m1911.
Edit: I would also like to point that anything you use in home defense is the thing that will be confiscated as evidence so, it is better to use something inexpensive, that you dont really care about. handguns should generally be cheaper than shotguns simply because of less materials used.
