Nice job! A7siii with 16-35 PZ for real estate/architectural videos, light setup with great low light performance. Just picked up the FX30 as a 2nd camera with the 20-70 PZ, this will be used for outdoors, details and longer views...also a 2nd camera for interviews....and for stills it's the Nikon gear...Kinda like to keep video cameras and photo cameras separate. Coming from a Z6 to the A7siii, had a chance to video the same home I shot with the Z6, which had challenging light, the difference in richness of color and lower noise is noticeable.
i APPRECIATE THIS TIME here, never heard of the fx line, but been running two 7s iii's with no issues. always great to hear a well put together comparison my friend.
I find the FX30 highly interesting. Unfortunately, it's not that easy to create nice crops with the APS-C. F2.8 is then translated to F4.2, too bad. Regards
Using full frame is like sleeping on a bed. Going apsc from full frame is like sleeping on the floor. Why would anyone want to sleep on the floor? Sensor size > any fx30 features you can throw at it
Im boxing my FX30 up and sending it off for sale and purchasing a A7S3 The noise on the FX30 is horrific even in well lit situations the amount of steps that have to be checked to produce decent quality is not with the price tag I only purchased for 4k 120fps for certain shoots but its practically impossible. The time and energy and anticlimactic end footage this camera produces reminds me of 1990's home video footage AVOID AVOID AVOID!!!
The way I look at it, you get the FX3 with the A7S III, but the FX30 will match much better with A7 IV or A7C II, which are sharper and in APS-C mode are about 24MP. The rolling shutter will probably be fine, you will just have to use a wider lens and correct the rolling shutter in post with Catalyst Browse.
I almost ordered one because of the hype but I’ll stick with A7siii and 7IV. My plan was to sell both and use FX30 but the stills mode is a little lacking. Yes I know it’s a video camera first but hey ho! Looks great though. I would miss EVF though as I do sometimes use it for video with longer lenses.
@@thefilmalliance Just as a hobby, the other bonus is the layout on S3 and 74 is the same so you can set them up identically which is very handy. I like not worrying about crop factors in different frame rates on the S3. But the 74 is a great photography camera and apart from missing 4k120 a great video camera as well, especially if just comparing just apsc mode to the fx30.
I wish they'd add timecode support for the A7Siii. It has the same internals as the FX3 so I'm sure it can do it, Sony is just choosing not to. I've got my FX30 on preorder as well - can't wait!!
Man, I've watched so many of your videos and your take on things and the work going into these videos is insane. Whenever I see you have a video on something I'm looking for I always click it. Really appreciate your perspective on things. Thanks for all your hard work!
Yes! I'm a Filmmaker x Photographer and like to keep my gear separated. I shoot stills on the Sony A7Rii and that's been a beast for me so long as I don't shoot in dark environments. But I am pushing heavily onto the video content side of things next year and the FX30 looks to be the best bang for the buck. As you said, it's that entry level for cinema cameras and for 2K body only, I'll make a hell of an ROA from it.
the crop at 120 and lowlight is only reason imma stick with the s3. only got annoyed when you kept saying s3 is hybrid. but in reality you are right. maybe back in the day the s line meant more cinema but that is only in relation to the other a7 group (a7_, a7s_, a7r_). and i also understand in this context the fx30 is definitely more video focused. if it wasn't for lowlight capabilities and 4k120 crop the fx30 at 1/2 cost is definitely the better buy (IMO), cause you can buy 2 of them to run whatever you want, would be perfect for podcast and streaming budgets. active cooling is major also. and being cropped you just buy a sigma lens 3 pack and you ready to go to be honest, and you have access to that creamy f1.4 goodness for the low. I think in the near future i will get it simply for the fact that 2 full frame lenses right now gonna run me basically the cost of the fx30, while i have multiple crop lenses available that arent being used currently. sigma 16, 30 and a few more. i want to see how well the pancake kti lens runs on the fx30. the 16-35 if i remember right. that would be a crazy run n gun setup. arguably fit in a pocket.
You summed it up perfectly and I can’t agree more. I know I hate that it’s a “hybrid” bc I do cinema. I don’t want a photography and video camera to do pro video work but I actually end up using the evf all the time hahaha
I'm currently using the a7iv as my main camera, I'm thinking of getting the fx30 as a secondary camera, and maybe it could be my main video camera when not in low light situations
I need to upgrade my ZV-E10 to a camera that does 4k60 and 4k120 would be a bonus. I only do video and it's 99% in bright, hot, mid day Arizona sun. FX30 seems ideal. I have no FF lenses. Thanks for this video!
NZD $6100 + cost of lenses for A7Siii vs NZD $3500 and I can use my existing APS-C lenses, and my ZV-1/ZV-10 can be used for what little photography (mostly close up stuff) I do. The saving alone allows me to buy two Sirui Anamorphic lenses - that and the form factor of APS-C in general makes it a much more viable option for me. I never really considered the A7Siii a realistic goal for me, whereas the FX30 is very aspirational. It would be my top end camera and my end point at my stage of life.
If I could afford an A7Siii I could pretty much afford an FX3, thus making FX30 obsolete until I could afford a good B Cam. So FX30 is definitely right for my broke a$$
Well I have an A7s iii and I ordered FX30 as my main camera. I am thinking to sell the A7s iii. The reason is lens's. I only have two full frame lenses Sony 24mm 1.4 and themton 28-70mm 2.8. I love my a7siii but I don't use it enough to keep it. Used only couple times. Also the full frame lens's are too expensive and I want to try anamorphic lens.
Good Video, However Netflix Approved doesn't mean that they will accept your film just because you shot on a Netflix approved camera, you can shoot it with a GoPro if they really want it. Netflix Approved means that if NETFLIX hires you to shoot a show or a film, they have a set list of approved cameras that you can use. That is what that list if for, again great video!
Thanks so much for bringing that to light. That makes alot more sense. I really appreciate that insight. Thank you for taking the time to explain that.

I had been waiting for an fx6 and they have been outta stock since the pandemic began. We shoot mostly Blackmagic, but I own a A7IV, A9, and a A7RIII. I happen to be looking around at the Fx3 and the Fx30 for a few weeks and I happen to look at the A7siii and saw one in the next nearby state at a Bestbuy. We took the hour trip. I saw one that was an open box along with a new one in store and I wanted to know what was wrong with the open box. Well the actual box said residue along with the listing on the website. I had them open up the box and everything was there and the body looked brand new, but it was missing the body cap. The price was 2729.99. I was expecting a torn up box with no manuals or anything and scratches or stickers on the body from maybe being a demo model, but no the box looked brand new and all of the other accessories were included. I have the total tech plan, which isca 60vday warranty and I can return it up to 60 days. I bought a body cap at 8.39 and the camera was 2978.00 with tax included. I decided to buy the camera after testing it in store. My decision was made for me at 778.00 off. I will use it until my fx6 gets in stock and I will then use it as a B cam. The deal was too good to pass up even for an Fx3. I'm taking it home now as my wife drives and I set up the menus.
I preordered my FX30 also. Good job covering the specs bro. I already have the A1, A7IV and A7Siii. I plan to add the FX30, and add it to my arsenal. The A7SIII is still full frame and native 3K which is why its so clean. Not downsampled. I also have not seen if the FX3 or FX30 has memory recall like the A7S3 so going from 4k24 to 4k120 at the switch of a dial is important to me also. No dials on the FX30 so how do you change settings super fast like on all the other sony cameras? Big tip for us content creators. Stop by my channel sometimes
What’s up bro, yes, I agree. We will have to find a way to toggle quickly between frame rates and resolutions. I’m going to set this thinks up as soon as I get it, with the most streamline quick toggles. I’m excited to dive in. Thanks so much for all the support.

It would be comical if the $1800 fx30 gets nextflix approved. It does have all-i and time code so theoretically is might just qualify. ConeEI"s point is not ISO but it always gives you the maximum dynamic range possible out of the camera no matter what.
I know but it may just happen. It also may not happen strictly due to the price and Netflix not being cool with such a cheap camera being approved haha
I hope they approve because cinema cameras before are mostly super 35 and also it's a good way to help and motivate small time content creator to be more creative and publish their own indie film. And not all great and creative minds can buy expensive things to start and create their masterpiece.
I am more of beginner still maybe a little above lol. I have the A6400 and the A6600. For my podcast I use 2 A6000’s with the sigma 30 & 16. Those never have to leave just there when I need them. Look really good no one would know lol. I’m gonna use the 6600 for any photo stuff I wanna do. Gonna trade in my 6400 towards the FX30 and use that for all my video needs. Same battery’s all my lenses will be compatible. I’m pumped can’t for the FX30 to get there. Also ordered the grip mic thing. Wanna try that too. Anyway sorry so long love the channel bud.
I am gonna wait for firmware on my a7siii, I m sure they gonna add some of the new features on it, soon or later ( I hope so). I think it is a good thing to try to control our shopping addiction. "The netflix approved" is just a marketing thing to sell more (is netflix giving us quality ? not sure of that).
What a great point. I wonder if Sony and Netflix partnered up to have the FX3 be "Netflix approved" because its great marketing for both. I do hope the A7siii has some better firmware updates as well. So your not picking up the FX30?
@@thefilmalliance No because, when I bought the a7siii, it was for having something that I will use for 5 years at least, I don't want to be trapped in a "fomo" with buying new gear every 6months because they add a new "magical new feature", I know all these things are great new things but really, I am still doing good things and I try much as I can to do the best with option that I already have in the a7siii. For the birdwatcher this would seem to be a good video camera for making videos of bird behaviour especially with its 1.62 crop on 1.5x sensor. Picking up the FFX30 in spite of the much better shooting modes of the A7s3, because its cheaper and the lenses are cheaper too. Also, because Sony has cut off the A7s3 from important firmware updates... And its not like people could use that as a photo camera... I'd switch to another brand if it wasn't for my collection of lenses and the poor selection for Canon's RF glass and the stink of their preventing the use of 3rd party glass...
Ill be getting my fx30. I wanted the fx3 and by the time it was on pre order i can actually get it but i choose not to because i used the money for something more important hence i just bought the a6600. Hoping sony would give a firmware update to enable gyro and have it compatible with catalyst browse since the rx0 ii has it and a6600 was their flagship apsc at that time and even when the zv-e10 was released. So please SONY if you are reading the comments section. So back to fx30. Now i think it is more justifiable to get the fx30 that i think i can still use if my channel get more subs or grow. Than just having a6600 that has horrendous rolling shutter (firmware update can change this by enable to choose a down sample 6k or a true 4k might help) and without proper stabilization like active steady shot and catalyst browse. The time and energy and anticlimactic end footage this camera produces reminds me of 1990's home video footage AVOID AVOID AVOID!!!
r u serious
Yes, noise in fx30 is very notoceable even in lit environment.
Hey James, it seems like you’ve got it figured out. Are you using them professionally or as a hobby?
@@thefilmalliance Just as a hobby, the other bonus is the layout on S3 and 74 is the same so you can set them up identically which is very handy. I like not worrying about crop factors in different frame rates on the S3. But the 74 is a great photography camera and apart from missing 4k120 a great video camera as well, especially if just comparing just apsc mode to the fx30.
That is why FX30 doesnt have EVF because of the high reso LCD screen
I wish they'd add timecode support for the A7Siii. It has the same internals as the FX3 so I'm sure it can do it, Sony is just choosing not to. I've got my FX30 on preorder as well - can't wait!!
Hey Randumb, yes exactly. That is how I think of it. So happy for you to also preorder the Fx30. It will be a hit for sure
Yes it's the same but if they will include everything fx3 has then they cannot draw a line between the fx3 and a7siii anymore.
you are right about the slow motion . I would also use the FX30 as a B camera for this purpose
Man, I've watched so many of your videos and your take on things and the work going into these videos is insane. Whenever I see you have a video on something I'm looking for I always click it. Really appreciate your perspective on things. Thanks for all your hard work!
Wow seriously thanks man. This kind of encouragement and support means a lot. Really glad that you find value in the things I share.
Thanks Phil for this comment. You have some great insight.
@@thefilmalliance thanks man 🙏
Dors that 2000$ gap justify the low light performance of the a7siii ? Il really curious if there is really that much of a difference
the crop at 120 and lowlight is only reason imma stick with the s3. only got annoyed when you kept saying s3 is hybrid. but in reality you are right. maybe back in the day the s line meant more cinema but that is only in relation to the other a7 group (a7_, a7s_, a7r_). and i also understand in this context the fx30 is definitely more video focused. if it wasn't for lowlight capabilities and 4k120 crop the fx30 at 1/2 cost is definitely the better buy (IMO), cause you can buy 2 of them to run whatever you want, would be perfect for podcast and streaming budgets. active cooling is major also. and being cropped you just buy a sigma lens 3 pack and you ready to go to be honest, and you have access to that creamy f1.4 goodness for the low.
Sounds like you’ve got it figured out. I love the cheaper APSC glass idea in the FX30 while you can still use full frame
I'll be getting the A7siii
Nice!

Yes the image quality of the Fx30 is way better than the Zve10. Thanks for asking.
I’m still with full frame no matter what!
Wow ok yes, please tell us why. For low light?
@@thefilmalliance Absolutely yes because currently im using A7siii & A7iv and I love the low light result for both 😍
I had been waiting for an fx6 and they have been outta stock since the pandemic began.
Many cinema cameras use super35 sensors why do people feel they need a full frame sensor? Makes no sense
great job on the video my friend!
Thank you so much, do you have either one of these cameras?
@@thefilmalliance same here pretty interested I have my own dropping tomorrow on the fx30. I don’t know if it has memory recall. Nobody has talked about it and I can’t find it anywhere. I don’t even know if it’s on the fx3

@@stevengergi6781 no because the a7siii does everything the fx30 does and more .
@@boomboombaby9140 well yes but what about lens's?
Fast forward to now.....and it's approved lol

Focus breathing compensation, great!!! But I am gonna learn to be better in manual focusing, Cine EI etc... OK great too! I m gonna learn how to be better in colorgrading, Animal focusing Awesome! @@thefilmalliance I love this philosophy
I am coming from a Canon 90d. I am 90% sold on the idea of moving to full frame. I have always felt that apsc has been a little bit of a compromise in terms of sharpness and DR, but with the arrival of the Canon R7 and the FX30 the differences have become so much smaller. I am inches away from purchasing a used A7SIII, but the FX30 is very tempting as will have some much choice in terms of lenses. I don't know. Either way they are both outstanding camera's so thinking how wrong can I go?
which did you get? a7Siii is the better hybrid, but fx30 has same design as FX3 which is awesome for videography
@@mirrorlessnyI actually went for the A7IV in the end, which I got for a great price. For me, it was the ideal stepping stone into Sony's full-frame mirrorless system, both in terms of budget and features. It has proven to be an outstanding camera and looks like it will more than suffice for a little while. Who knows, when I am ready to upgrade again, Sony may have released a A7S IV:-) In the meantime, I think investing in the best glass for my new camera is top of my priorities.

We do a lot of astrophotography vlogs and we barely use any lighting, we shot it as it is.
Thats hard to say. It depends on what you’re using them for. I created a camera quiz to help you figure out which camera is best for you Have you taken it yet?
@@thefilmalliance Nope, I did not take it. If you have the link, let me know.
As for the usage of the camera, well, in this case, it will be a dedicated camera JUST for filming. During the day, I have no issues, but at night, and with practically no lighting, it gets tricky, and that's where the a7sIII is so important.
Wait a minute! "Small" crop at 1.6 ?

For the birdwatcher this would seem to be a good video camera for making videos of bird behaviour especially with its 1.62 crop on 1.5x sensor. However I cannot find one reviewer that has looked at this aspect. Sigma f1.4 apsc prime lenses are popular, but there are multiple other brands available now
Picking up the FFX30 in spite of the much better shooting modes of the A7s3, because its cheaper and the lenses are cheaper too. Also, because Sony has cut off the A7s3 from important firmware updates... And its not like people could use that as a photo camera...
I'd switch to another brand if it wasn't for my collection of lenses and the poor selection for Canon's RF glass and the stink of their preventing the use of 3rd party glass...
Hey, yes I get that. So have you bought the FX30 yet? If so, what do you think of it?
I'm pretty slow on pulling the trigger, after buying an A7C, selling it, buying an A74, selling it, I want to get it right this time...
But im still hoping that SONY will give a6600 owners the update I mentioned. I will still buy the FX30 even if they give the mentioned update to a6600 and will use the a6600 as b cam and thumbnail shooter.
