This is why having an omnipresent surveillance state is bad. Especially one that will punish those for thinking in ways that don't conform to the norms the state lays out. It stifles creativity and innovative thinking thus crushing technological advancement in the long run.

-Novel Associations; Alot of pattern detection
    -Divergent thinking-thinking outside the box
    -Improve=Spontaneous connections, outside of awareness
-flow state; things coming outside of yourself/awareness/self-awareness
-lesser activation in dorsal lateral pre-frontal coretex (self-awareness/moitoring self), increased activation in medial pre-frontal cortex aka unfiltered information and not inhibited by self-monitoring

The switching back and forth is especially true in stand-up comedy. It's doing prepared and memorized material, while at the same time feeling out the audience and improvising as needed. When I get on stage, I never know if I'm going to be doing almost entirely a prepared routine or almost entirely an improvised routine, until I'm in the middle of it and seeing how the audience is reacting.

I play the drums for 20 years moving my all for of my limbs at different times while I'm following playing to one specific rate BPM. That's our job we keep the band in time. The kicker is I do this better when I don't think as much and don't try as hard, because practice infinite amounts of rhythms to develop my chops. When I begin to think if I'm slowing down, I slow down and fuck up 100% of the time

is a lack of sense of self is required for creative thinking, then people who are constantly stressed will have dramatically reduced ability to create. This kinda confirms my own theories about the process and some ideas I have about intelligence. When your really stressed, your obviously going to think more about yourself. If you dont get it ill give you an example. Say your out of work or having some sort of financial crisis. Maybe your worried about possibly facing jail time, or you are even dealing with social issues that increase your anxiety. All of these things put you in a position where your thinking about the future. Your taking a hard look at cause and effect, and your position in it. With so much focus and attention on your fears and worries about the future, it would be really hard to escape your ego and thinking about yourself from your perspective as an ID.
This also might kinda explain why my, others, perfectionism gets in the way of making new art.

I totally understand her last point.
When I'm making toast and a tea in the morning, alone at home, I might occasionally sing some song. But since I know no one is listening I am NOT in the executive network - Usually the lyrics consist of yelling about cows and how the fridge is gonna turn into a spaceship and attack the pentagon. It's probably not something people would approve of, especially with the amount of profanity I manage to slip in.
Anyway this is an awesome video, this content should be drilled into kids from birth, help them train that part of the mind which allows self-less thinking. The world would be so much better. No one would buy expensive shit just to feel good about themselves/impress others. That in itself would save the world.
Also PERFECT interviewer and interviewee. His questions were exactly the ones I had on my mind, and she addressed them perfectly every time. Just seemed like two cool friends natural and engaged, talking about being geniuses.

"The ideas and the work you did has to make sense, so you have to be monitoring your environment somehow minimally". Well, it doesn't make sense under your perception, because later you could connect those ideas to create something meaningful and creative. In that sense the sense of perception is very subjective, because you can't think of "making sense" and "being creative" at the same time, and really perception depends on "thoughts about reality" (whatever reality means) and not on reality itself. It's kind of hard to pinpoint the value of this, and because of that I'm trying to figure this out. This is fascinating!!

It seems as though the ability to improvise successfully stems from being highly skilled at the craft in the first place. The practiced or memorized material must come without thinking. At that point, one does not have to be self consious anymore, therefore freeing oneself to "improvise". It's as if the term improvising does not really have the meaning we ascribe to it. It's not like the person is truly pulling things out of thin air. Rather, their bag of tricks is so full that they can mix it up and spit it out in different ways that seem new to the observer. I found the ideas in the interview fascinating.

I think geniuses are just curious people. People that cannot sleep if they don't find the answer to something they have in their minds, people that will persist over and over on something they believe has to have an explanation or an answer or something that can calm their minds.
Genius minds are very active, it doesn't stop and I think that's why the biggest geniuses of our era become crazy. Having a voice telling you all the time, picking somewhere in your head to find something and if you find it, there will be more questions after that answer, it never ends, but we, human beings need a rest.
And I can create a theory about what they go crazy. I think their minds are plenty of paths and ways, if for some reason one of these paths are deviate, then the reason too, so they will start creating wrong ideas, histories, visions and because their minds go to quick, stop that thinking it's very difficult and the brain starts to looping itself making crazy the owner. Weird, isn't it?

  • @angelrxn5944
    @angelrxn5944 2 года назад

Also if you have different neural circuits and you're using them, that implies that you've got to have those in order to make sure you function and you have cognition. Okay, switching, I think that intelligence means (first obviously) the connectivity of those circuits, the number of connections, the density of connectivity and the number of perceptions we are using to see the "world" are constructed from the same thing and there's no unique way of seeing things; the brain is multi-methodical and multi-directional and, ultimately, your interpretation of reality rests upon you. The next question is: what is the right approach to see reality and in fact how can you change your perception more easily to adapt the people's perception to your own, for both to benefit from the interaction flow and reliability? Well, that's empathy... Good, if that's the case, then what is its neural circuit? Whenever you want to get things done, you reason out and the creativity shuts off... Yeah I learned it. But what if you were there daydreaming a little bit and suddenly you have an idea, you reason it out whilst. You start to forget it slowly! Well that's the example of the co-interaction of those neural circuits you've talked about... Oh wait what is a neuron exactly?? If you start thinking about it, you'll find that it doesn't matter what you think or thought, and that you'd think it's a unique unit of information, that processes information, into a mysterious chemical way so that the body reads it, but then the question arises: if the body is translating that information, then the body is kind of a translator translating a language we do not speak at least fluently. How do you speak it, where do we start? How can that kind of information influence the way we act (in a global sense) and how do we translate it? Well, essentially you can work all the way down and figure out what are its ingredients. There are other factors related to that, like the tissue degradability, net information rate, adaptability quotient (the AQ, that I'm going to invent, not just that I want to, but also because I see connections between the subject's adaptability to an environment, its neural connection pattern, the reasoning process and empathy. This is getting divergent so here I stop. I don't care if someone reads it or not, I've just wanted to write this down.

I overall believe that people who happen to have phenomenal talents in particular subject reflect their genius. Generally people in the top 1 percent with exceptional talents can define their genius in various areas. Michael Jackson was a genius for music, Nikola Tesla a genius engineer and inventor, Einstein a phenomenal scientist like Isaac Newton, Pele a phenomenal soccer player, Muhammed Ali an amazing boxer and athlete, Madonna a fantastic singer, or William Shakespeare who was a master in writing or the great all around genius Leonardo Da Vinci who mastered all areas of genius. There is also business and investment geniuses like Jeff Bezos of Amazon, or Bill Gates of Microsoft and Steve Jobs of Apple. When I think of genius those people seem to come in mind. Another phenomenal genius in art and animation as well entrepreneurship was Walt Disney who had a vision for developing great things with many talented individuals and not just himself.

Disregard the stigmatic egocentric conceptions of the word “genius”. I’m considered a genius but it’s not what it’s cracked up to be. It can quite frustrating , alienating , depressing and sometimes quite frightening. Being a genius has not been very beneficial for me at all. Nobody likes a genius so it’s best to just tone it down and not get noticed most of the time. You feel bad for anyone you may cast a shadow on also. Genius has not made me any money I’ve struggled to keep a job because I learn everything too quickly and get bored or I’ll have innovative ideas that get ignored etc. it hurts my relationships in too many ways to explain. The upside of being a genius I guess is that I’m happy being alone and being able have my own space to create, learn, build and think has had a very positive impact on my mental health and sustainability. I don’t mean to be a downer but just putting it out there if you come across a genius don’t assume they smarter than you or a threat. They merely process and interpret things differently and in a more neurodiverse nature is all. If anything assure them it’s ok to be a genius and show some acceptance because a lot of us often come to the point where we just want to opt out of this life , than feel so alienated or stifled. And the sad part is most of us actually do it eventually

@@sarahb9805 no you made a great analogy of what i meant which means you understand what I meant in my comment . That in itself demonstrates an intelligence that like my own , can be easily misunderstood. Wether you think you are a genius or not, by your articulation and ability to denote concepts I would speculate that you are, but like I also commented there is a stigma even in the word itself and if you correlate your comments about your self confidence , with you saying you don’t think you are genius , well then that also suggests to me that you.

Best description of the concept "genius" i have read. People just assume it is an ego boosting boast but dont really understand how nothing in life is free. Any extremes require tradeoffs and genius does not equate happy or even successful in this modern society, perhaps more the opposite. I was incredibly lucky with a well functioning family and met my wife early in life, without them i would probably not be alive today.

*I think it is a mistake to blend together all kinds of geniuses and just call that "genius".* The way she describes her work makes it seem like she associates the genius of Einstein with creativity, however you don't create math equations like you would create a painting, the solutions don't come from the unconscious, they are produced in the most focused conscious state there is, it has much more to do with the ability to conceptualize and make more associations than creativity.
Furthermore I think modern science tends to associate too many essences of the human mind to biology, while history demonstrates that certain life experiences are the catalyst which turns highly sensible (in their ability to perceive much more of their life experiences) persons into geniuses.
However this is by far the best content Big Think has produced in something like two months. Please keep bringing actual experts on the show rather than random successful business owners who are so full of themselves they think their wealth makes them wiser than the next guy.

actually, from the guardian I read an article a few years ago, about a mathematician who describes at higher levels of math it is more of a creative process, just be mindful that this is a crude memory. That being said, it would be wise to keep in mind the difference in these fields.

I think what she is mostly trying to stress upon is the idea that you make novel connections between ideas in the so called diffused mode of thinking. It is true that the understanding of those ideas are done in the most focused conscious state but the diffused mode lets the mind wander and imagine leading to make the connections between those ideas which is not likely in the focused state because it may seem absurd or just doesn't make sense(if the thought even came in the first place - very unlikely).

Cerebral You really think that rapping well is easy? Why don't you do it? Just because it's something you might not agree with, or don't see as some form of art, it doesn't make it as you wish to be true. What if you hated pianos? Would that make a piano composer not a genius? Ha...

thedon008 Rap reminds me of Doctor Seuss books. Imaginative, yes. Entertaining, yes. Genius? That's to be debated. He even makes or changes words to fit the occasion as is equally prolific in rap. Rap is like the Mcdonalds of the music industry; people like it in great quantity, the market is saturated with prefabricated/bland lyrics, but it is their opinion to have at the end of the day.

Creativity will never become a definition of genius, because our understanding of a genius centres around a person's ability to figure out a problem, while creativity doesn't involve necessarily solving a problem, but creating a solution that makes the problem insignificant. You can see whether the solution is creative, but how do you measure the creative quality of said solution, to determine the level of creativity, when it relinquishes the problem? If you simply measure how much the solution ignores the problem, then you're merely measuring the individuals ability to be abstract.
There's also the problem of inspiration, as creative outcome is often a combination of multiple inspirations. Or as Albert Einstein said: “Creativity is knowing how to hide your sources”. So is a person more creative, if they come up with their own solution, or are they more creative if they form a solution out of various inspirations? How do you measure the variables of these sources, and what they borrow to the finished solution?
Creativity is also often focused around one creative aspect, such as music. But if a person is very musical, yet a horrible painter, is that person then less creative, then someone who can both play music and paint? How do you compare the creative substance of a musician to a painter? And what about time versus result. Who is the most creative; the person who comes up with a good idea fast, or the person who comes up with a great idea slowly? Should time even be a factor in determining creative quality, considering that great ideas often comes as a result of many bad ones?
    Creativity is an enigma.

What is this? _New York Times columnist Carl Zimmer_ has an unironed short and a crumpled jacket, while _neuroscientist Heather Berlin_ is dressed to go to the grocery store with a hope to flirt on Saturday morning.
Is this in any way standard wear in the USA for an international scientific exposition?
And the language is dreadful: I often can't understand what is being said here, and yet you call your language _English_.
I am a regular reader of _Scientific American_ and the articles often help me in my work, but the authors and editors there make a significant effort to write what will pass as _International English_. That means little, but it means that I can easily read and appreciate every item.
Look at this from Zimmer and tell me that he's worth the money?
So ... I, I'm uh I'm picturing, like, someone in a scanner, rapping. I uh an' uh and that's hard ta ... picture. So I mean what, h' how, how does, what does this look like? I mean how da you uh. I mean
    [So] (Berlin tries to answer)
the experiments are so, difficult to set up. I mean you've, you've figured something out.
    So how's it work?
    [Yes] (Phew!)

It is my guess that Heather Berlin has an IQ of 132. She is very analytical, about she does not understand what she is measuring. Creativity is chaos .. the interesting thing about chaos is that chaos has a pattern. The "genuis" is in SEEing the patterns inside the chaos.
