I first saw Kenny because I love Marty Stuart's music. But after watching that group for a while, Kenny has become one of my all-time favorite musicians. I watch all of his interviews and I'm fascinated by the stories he tells.
Love Kenny and Chris, for their knowledge and storytelling. I just dislike MS. He uses his power to push people around. Many years ago, there was a very talented Canadian musician playing with a gospel band in the south. He gave notice he was going home for long enough to get married. Marty threatened him, told him if he left, Marty would make sure his career in the US was over. Every time I hear MS talking about his heart, I could vomit.
Kenny has great Tom Petty stories. Lucinda opened for Tom probably 50 times. She was the opener for Petty's last show at the Hollywood bowl. Mike Campbell produced Way Out West.
I've had the pleasure to see KV live with MS at least a half a dozen times, spent time with him after a show and he was kind enough to autograph my 63 Tele. I can't say enough good stuff about the man, his talent, and the mark he is choosing to leave on our planet. God Bless KV and thanks for the great interview.
This is the 3rd episode in a row that’s been recommended to me. First Dam Baird brought me here. What an incredible talk that was! Otis Gibbs put me on to the genius of Dan Baird and Kenny Vaughn. I’m just starting down this rabbit hole. I can’t wait to find more. He’s a monster in that tele. Great podcast and great questions. Very cool work you’re doing here.
This is a fantastic interview. Thanks a bunch conducting and posting this. Kenny's CD is great and all Marty's cds and albums are good. The last CD " Way Out West" is a MASTERPIECE.
Thank you thank you thank you I just found your channel. I’m always searching for any thing on Kenny. The interview was off the map enjoyable. Looking forward to watching the rest of your channel. Did I say thanks

I remember running away from home when I was 6 to go the record store with my older sister to get a record I couldn’t life without. When I got home I got the strap for getting my sister in trouble. but it was worth it. still love music to this day. So nice to hear the harmonies etc guitar picking it enspires me even to this day. Love this stuff more exciting to me than being fancy. I play guitar now wish I could play with these guys just once.
1ST TIME I HEARD & SAW KENNY VAUGHAN PLAY,, I HAVE TO SAY,, I REMEMBER TELLING (asking out loud, "where did they ever find this guy at!!??)" I was awestruck every TIME he broke into a lead breaK,, KV. A NATIONAL TREASURE!!! A true master of the telecaster, & many others,,,,,,
I had a similar reaction to the Beatles Sullivan shows. They played that show on my 11th birthday. I had never heard of them before and after that my life found a new direction. I still play at age 70.. Kenny is such a well grounded guy.
These are really great interviews!! I've seen Kenny multiple times with Marty - and once with Lucinda opening for the ABB. Craig - love what you're doing. It's obvious you're not as familiar with country music history but you still show all music great respect. Thanks.
Thanks Jeff, glad you're digging the interviews. Yes, my knowledge of country music is fairly limited. In fact, the truth is... with all the genres of artists I interview, it would be impossible to know even half of them well. But for me, it's about the player and what makes them tick. So as you said, I get a bit of a pass on the music end :-) Thanks for your kind words and thanks for your support! CG
EveryoneLovesGuitar Foo Fighters’ Chris Schifflett is doing a country music podcast and he’s kinda hitting it from the perspective of a casual fan and not really knowing as much on the history. It’s still awesome. Keep doing what you’re doing. Only way we learn is to hear it.
Lovin' Kenny's comments on Willie Nelson. Such a master of timing and style. Listen to the way that he changed the way that EVERYBODY hears Stardust today. Before Willie Stardust was an upbeat Vic Damone sort of pop/jazz. Not today.
I moved to Colorado because of legal weed and wanted to be in Tommys old stomping ground. Kenny is one of my new guitar heros as I just recently discovered him. I wondered if they knew each other. Great video.
I thoroughly enjoyed this interview. I saw Marty Stuart and the Fabulous Superlatives earlier this year (2023). They played the best show I’ve seen and heard in a long long time. I’m hoping I get to see them again before tickets get much higher. I paid $44.95 and I think it was a bargain .This band is just fantastic.
Kenny is fantastic, he has a really wide apreciation of popular music, that's why he is so good himself. He is so right about the Beatles, music was never the same again. I equate it to that scene in the Wizard of Oz, when Dorothy opened the door after the tornado and the world had changed from black and white to technicolor.
How did I never hear of Kenny Vaughan until 5 years ago? I lived just north of Denver at the same time and we have a lot in common and probably the same age... I got his number. Denver Pop Festival? I was there and was a few feet from Jimi and saw Noel quit the band! Univibes magazine has an article interviewing me about what that night was like.... damn...
You're welcome Bo. And thank you for finally allowing me to call someone Bo. That's like THE coolest name ever. Only took me 54 years to get there. Glad you liked the interview and thanks for listening! CG
Just caught the Superlatives at The Grand, Frankfort. Aptly named, all 4 Members multi-instrumentalists, lead and 4 part harmony's that can't be beat. My advice - go see them before it's too late.
GREAT INTERVIEW. One that should be modeled by so called journalists. You truly get into the mindset of Kenny. I can relate to Kenny speaking of radio stations back in the late 50s and 60s....you’d hear all genres of music. As a budding musician it can’t but affect your listening ‘palette’. Great job done here!
Robbie Krieger had a classical guitar background. That's why he never used a pick. At least that's the story I heard. There weren't a lot of finger pickers in the rock world back then. John Cipolina of Quicksilver was another favorite of mine.
Saw the Superlatives With Marty Stuart at Buck Owens Chrystal Palace,Cousin Kenny plays so good it makes me mad,i can't seem to play lead, but all them boys are multi talented,When Scruggs plays that peddle less steel it's like heaven in a tin can.MERCY!!!!
I will add, I am in a project with my wife and brother in law. They are both amateurs, brother in law being pretty much a beginner on mandolin. I came upon a juncture when being the recordist, he turns, after a take, and to me asks, "How was that?" Later after he left I talked to my wife about this. I told her that years ago, I didn't know her brother's ability. I have come to realize he is a beginner. When he asks me, how he did, I can't ask him to play beyond his ability. I ask what he thinks of the take, if he likes it, great, if not we redo it. Hearing Kenny talk about being the bad cop is something I know is coming....soon.
Great interview! I love the Paco de Lucia story. He must have really been a weed head! I was standing at a urinal in Sarasota Florida before one of his shows and apparently his percussionist is at the urinal next to me and starts asking me if I had any weed also for Paco! 😂
Tommy didn't leave Denver until 73.His girlfriend at that time was Karen Ullibari. He did move to L.A. And Tommy wasn't from South Dakota....he was from Iowa.
Ray Mazarek never played a Farfisa organ. He played Vox Continental and then a Gibson combo organ G-101 combo organ made by the Lowrey Organ Company Chicago. Which was very fitting since Ray was also from Chicago, Ill. Robby Krieger always played the Gibson SG as his main instrument. It was his firast electric guitar. He was actually a trained Flamenco guitarist, and so never used a pick. He also played a '54 Les Paul Custom for slide.
I've seen Kenny twice with Marty Stuart and the Fabulous Superlatives. Once acoustic, the other electric. And they lived up to their name. Though not my kind of music, I must say that those performances, particularly the acoustic one, were stunningly good. I love that Kenny is such a fan across such a wide base of styles. And he is quite right about 'Paperback Writer' moving the needle of pop music; it was rock. And 'Revolver' was a game-changer in that upon first hearing so many of us were at a loss for words. Some of its tunes were so strange yet so compelling; a few listens were required just to come to grips with the radical leap in progress the band had made (i.e., it was the start of progressive rock). In that sense it was a precursor to Hendrix's 'Are You Experienced', which was the next WTF moment. (Cream pre-dated Hendrix, but while their single 'I Feel Free' was a fantastic introduction and the Bruce/Brown songwriting was exceptionally good, their albums lacked the explosiveness and uniqueness of Hendrix's.) Also great that Kenny's sonic aesthetic stays true to authenticity, with Gibson and Fender guitars and vintage brands and models of amps. In this age of boutique gears and banks of pedals, he, like his hero Jeff Beck, keeps things 'real'. A very enjoyable interview. Many thanks to both of you.
Great interview. I've seen Kenny with Marty about a dozen times. Kenny and Dick Dale are my 2 favorite living guitar players. Kenny also met and saw Roy Buchanan. He talks about seeing Roy's amp and all the controls were wide open. He said Roy just used the controls on the guitar. Another influence on Kenny was the Colorado based surf band "The Astronauts". McGuinn and Hillman are doing a 50 year anniversary tour of "Sweetheart of the Rodeo" and Marty & the Superlative are the band. Once in a lifetime show, already got my ticket. If you EVER get a chance to interview Unknown Hinson he is AWESOME!!!
Hey, thanks for your message JohnLee, and really glad you enjoyed the interview. Sounds like you have this genre totally covered. Have a great week, and thanks for listening! CG
Great interview. Sadly enough Tommy did not make it to be a household name back then....like Hendrix, Clapton Page did for example. In fact even for me, I would not have known who he was if it wasn't for his "Private Eye's" album- which remains one of my favorite albums to this day. I always knew someone replaced R. Blackmore in Deep Purple and I knew someone replaced Joe Walsh in the James Gang. I just did not know who that someone was until I heard Private Eye's that made me sit up and pay attention. Love Kenny and Marty.
Tommy Bolin. I was too young to have encountered him while he was active. I was turned on to him in the '80's. No story. Just Teaser dropped into my lap on cassette. I wore it out. Back then titles on vinyl were dropping out of print while not being available digitally, yet. The internet was not yet a thing for the average human and it wouldn't have had the answers it manifests now. I scoured used record stores and swap meets. While I found Private Eyes and a proper copy of Teaser information was scarce. Then The Ultimate dropped and the booklet that came in the box revealed the story. I quickly bought Spectrum, Bang, Miami and Come Taste The Band. Mind Transplant took some time and effort in the time before EBAY. Last Concert From Japan even more-so. Then The Archives started releasing the vault stuff. I remember when I found out the answer to my biggest question. Why no new stuff? I had no idea of his fate until shortly before The Ultimate came out. It made that purchase bitter sweet. Tommy's playing was always tasty. It came directly from his soul. From everything I have learned about him over the years... he had a beautiful soul.
And about happiness, you are wrong! I used to say but then heard the Dalai Lama say it better: "Your happiness in life is dependent entirely on the community". Think about that and think it through...
I just never seen the " Greatness " in the Beatles. Sure there are about 10 of their songs that are a good listen but that Sgt Pepper Album was a real Joke.
Kenny is a living legend. Man what a picker. His bandmate Chris Scruggs is an animal too. Awesome interview.
