Everybody forgets that Marvin was a group singer before he became a solo artist. Marvin was in a DC group in high school called "The Rainbows" and later was in the Moonglows with his mentor Harvey Fuqua.

You do know that Marvin started out singing in groups before he became a solo artist. He was in a group in his hometown DC called "The Rainbows" in high school. He got to Motown because he was a member of a later version of Harvey Fuqua's "Moonglows."

@stedebassett1523: Marvin, Gladys and the Pips were pretty close friends. Marvin had a hit record in 1968 called “CHAINED” which Gladys and the Pips sang backup on. They just were in the studio when Marvin was recording hanging out and decided they wanted to do background vocals with no credit.

The story is that Marvin's version was done first, but Berry Gordy didn't want to release it and kept in the can. The Miracles did the first released version of "Heard It Through The Grapevine" on a 1967 album. Gladys and The Pips had their hit 1968 version. After that, Berry Gordy changed his mind and released Marvin's 1969 version. It stayed the biggest selling single in Motown history until Diana Ross & Lionel Richie's "Endless Love" in 1981.
