I know a lot of ppl think this is R&B.....This is SOUL music.....because only SOUL music can evoke feelings in you like no other genre of music....it truly touches your soul.God bless her voice
This IS undeniably the ORIGINAL R and B as well. People have just confused it with this watered down version we have today. R is for RHYTHM: she has that. B is for BLUES or pain: she has that as well. This is R&B sung with SOUL!
Bless you for that comment! I believe Gladys to be the most soulful singer ever. To hear her in concert can make your heart fly and your tears fall at the same time. If i could only listen to one singer on a desert island, this lady is it.
Saw her today in Amsterdam. 79 years old and the voice is still strong. A pure, elegant, sincere Lady. Thank You Gladys. Thank you for your endurance, your example. You have opened doors for many. My generation is reaping the benefits of your sacrifices. Let's not forget that Gladys still had to use the back door to enter a concert hall in the 60s.
I went to see her some time in the early 80's in Louisville KY and I had a seat 2nd row center stage. I heard her sing 2 songs and my pregnant wife turned and said I'm sick and we have to leave. That was 40 years ago and I'm still mad at her.
I bet if she sang this song today it would sound just as good....among the Motown alumni her voice, and looks btw, have withstood the years extremely well.
The Empress of Soul's voice is stronger than it was back in the day. I've seen her live several times and it gets stronger with time. You can tell she wasn't a smoker and probably didn't drink a lot either. She took care of her "instrument" which is why it's still sounding even better today.!!
An unsung quality of Gladys is her stage presence. With minimal moves or theatrics, her swag and authority always sieze your attention when she performs. Takes a strong, confident artist to pull that off.
LORD HAVE MERCY! when she sings this song, she just stirs up all kind of stuff inside you. one of the best female voices ever. heard her recently. woman still got her pipes.
Man I physically start trembling when she sings this song, And when she gets to 2:24...I'm just done. You can hear in her voice that she actually went through that pain. They just don't make them like Gladys Knight anymore.
As you get older you’ll definitely feel the lyrics of this type of song. You’ve experienced some things and the song hits you differently than when you were younger
Bar none my absolute favorite female singer, regardless of the musical style. Gladys just brings it. You feel it when she sings. She can just flat sang the thang.
Isn’t it something how she just dominates your emotions with her voice? If you feel nothing while listening to her singing this song then you need to go make an appointment
Just saw Ms Knight in Atlantic City 5/12/18 she sang this song and all those legendary hits and I tell you it was a home run, touch down, three pointer, drop the mic performance - her voice and presence on a stage is magnificent still as a woman in her senior years! Love me some Gladys!
One of THE MOST beautiful songs of the era....With love and thank you's to Gladys Knight...The Pips...The Funk Brothers and The Detroit Symphony Orchestra. Way to go MOTOWN...Way to go Detroit. FIRST CLASS.

the power of her voice and the emotion conveyed blows me away. Too bad there is not talent like this these days. But I see Gladys live every chance I get. Forever The Empress!!!
This live performance right here sounds just like the recording. Ive had the pleasure of seeing her and Bubba perform and the two were awesome. There are very few artists, who can sing live and sound like the studio recording.
They just don't make music like this anymore, the artists cannot even come out with music! I wish I could turn the clock back to the years when the music made you take notice.

This is one of my top songs in the entire world. I love Gladys and she really put it down. I feel the message and we experience this everyday. This song is just Timeless. I love these lyrics.
I listened to this song in the early 70s. My parents were big fans of GK and the Pips! There is no lip syncing here. Pure musical talent. So much soul. Too bad they don't make them like this anymore. The 70s were so cool. So much talent!!!!
Ms. Gladys looking _lovely_ and _radiant_ as ever. The Pips got on the same attire as they did on the first episode of _Soul Train_ and didn't miss a beat! I'm here cause I wanna be the first before and after the premiere of _American Soul_ on BET. RIP William Guest and Edward Patten.
Aretha Franklin is considered the queen of soul. And I RESPECT that.. But Gladys is and will always be my queen of soul.. Ever since I was a kid , I liked her voice just a little bit better.

There were two groups that came to Motown who were already seasoned and ready to go. That didn’t need to be “developed”. That was the Four Tops and G N&T P. It’s obvious to a duck that Gladys was hands down the best female singer at Motown. Ever!!!
Man, I've been saying the SAME THING for YEARS! Motown just didn't appreciate what they had, and they continuously found ways to mess over her and the Pips. Then there was the matter of Berry Gordy pushing/foisting a certain OTHER female vocalist on the world at the expense of Gladys (and even some of the members of that OTHER chick's singing group). When they finally left Motown, they proceeded to have the greatest successes of their careers. For me, though, I was always more of a Memphis person than a Motown person. Gladys is from Atlanta and has that DOWN HOME soul sound...which is very ANTI-MOTOWN.
