Awesome, I am happy for you man. I had a chance to buy one barely used in 1992, but I already had a brand new 125 and 250 so the economics didn't make sense. Especially given I was a full-time student at Purdue along with working a job. Love it guy.
First race of the season 2 weekends ago. Bike was ready, I was ready and expecting to ride good. Full day of Friday practice motos in the bag. Bike wasn’t running quite right. I figured it was the extra 1500’. I changed the jet Friday night and ran it. Still off but felt better. Saturday morning practice the bike dies on me……..lost spark. GD coil! I just replaced it 2 years ago with OEM and I have minimal time on it since then. Fkn sucks. Now I have a new coil and a spare. I still have to install the replacement but it was out of spec according to the service manual.
Not that I don’t think that thing is beautiful. But I’m sure it still shakes pretty well. You should really try and build that yz500 like lazer999. Not only would it rev to the moon, handle better and no vibration I think it would be your heavenly 500.
It's not gonna Rev to the moon. Even the 300 kit is a trade off on over Rev. Big bores 2t don't topically go with rpm. Futher than a cr 500 with no power valve.. probably, but not significantly. Not all power valves alter compression. It typically exhuast port hight. Just kinda moves the pwr, higher up the torque curve. You could probably balance it and have it ported for top end. And it would out Rev the brc 500 kit on the yz platform. I think the efi one was the ktm kit. Not the yzilla or w.e he names it. Brc kit is like 10g plus a bike.
I personally think that 89 CR500 should be fixed and shelved, let it have a nice retirement while looking perfect. Rebuild and don't put any fluids in etc.. Honestly I think its worth more fully restored and a show piece than being used and fixed over and over. Now the CR with aluminum frame is another story, fix and beat the snot out of that lol
Sound advice. Those old magnesium covers rotted out like crazy, the 89 and newer aluminum is the fix for sure. You gotta reroute the coolant lines though when you upgrade the new side covers on a old motor. The newer cr500r has coolant jacket on side of the cylinder the older one has it on the back of cylinder.
Did you forget to drill the piston ot the exhaust bridge? I had a 89 cr 500. Ripped but handled like a xr 500 compared to the 02 yz426 I replaced it with. On pavement the 500 was quicker. But you just couldn't hardley get it to the ground on dirt. Especially not dg fire roads and high desert single track.
It's ridiculous people still seize 2-strokes. Give the thing some fuel FFS , if it ain't leaving a cloud of smoke when you feed it the beans it's too f-ing lean. If you keep the jetting just less than rich splutter four stroking everywhere but the normal low throttle splutter spot you won't seize. Even an old air-cooled 2t will survive that abuse if jetted for it. Crispy jetting is cool for the trails but it's just no good for prolonged heavy throttle. I hope you learned from this.
Dude I was thinking the old lady done you in, we hadn’t seen you in so long. Awesome vid thanks
Clean and classic! The struggle is real. I love the full on builds but this one strikes a cord.
It’s a clean build! Nicely executed!
Beautiful job! Love the stock look so much... had an 89 CR250 and loved it.
Bout fkn time clint bud

Good to see the Boyz racing 😊
Sand is the ultimate bike equalizer. 450s were built just bc of the dunes, but they have no place in racing tracks.
I picked up a 1986 CR500 completely restored
Bad ass run Ivan!!!
Sooo used to pickin on Wiseco he almost said it !! but NOPE. ITS A WASNER THAT BLEW UP !!! lol 😃👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Looks like a blast!
Another soon to be garage queen
I’m liked and subscribed 👍
Breaking in a Bike in the SandHills Bad idea , I miss my CR, 500
Damn I seen 6 quadzillas in one spot 😮
Awesome 👍😎

Don't have time to watch the video right now, but thumbs up
I have to make it to SM…. I’m lacking friends with big bores to go with!!!

That thing looks factory Honda!

Omg that looks a awesome meet up .....born in wrong country or would be there 😢lol 👍👍🇬🇧🇺🇸
Do a quick water pump/ clutch cover swap and ride the AF

Wow, to mess up the break-in on the 5oo seems Like a rookie move.
👍
Sooooooo S I C K ‼️ 💨
What is a "Service Honda"?
Factory team race bike
Confusing, you said it was seized up a bit but not locked up yet it has low compression. The math just aint mathin...
It's called a soft sieze, melted the piston enough to stick when hot but free up when cooled off.
my DB85R would take ya off the line haha maybe not top speed tho YAAAAAAAAAAATT

Sucked sand or running lean my guess
