- Finally! I've been waiting to share this edit of the 2012 Kx500 AF vs the 1989 Cr500 for quite some time now. Ben Probst is the man behind these builds and was cool enough to let me come down and ride them till my arms fell off in Utah. We did a full Q&A for you guys that may have questions so watch all the way through. Both of these bikes are completely insane to ride. I plan on doing a lot more with Ben in the future with some of his other creations. Thank you guys for 20K subs and I hope you enjoy this edit! Special thank you to Ben Probst and Chad Cadnum for all the help . Also @maxfield717 behind the lens!

This guy is a natural on a 500. Not pussyfooting around just going wide-open! This guy got some serious balls and skills! Great riding.
Thank you for the kind words! I hope you check out the rest of my channel, there’s alot more 500 content!
I’ve always been a cr500 guy and never liked the looks of a kx500, but that updated kx500 is sick as fuck
Both are beasts, I started with a KX 125 2 stroke and then a KX 250, had some engine work done to it and on the dyno was putting out 56 wide open throttle in 4th gear it would still wheelie, I couldn’t imagine the hit of these 2 bikes. BTW, my first bike was a Kawasaki coyote pull start, yeah, I’m old!
Over 70hp on both bikes. That’s Fn nuts!
It's also total BS.
Bullshit Ben Probst is full of it.
Honda handles like 125.lovely bike. KX is more motocross than supercross
70hp. You sure in polite voice?😁

@@disyokerr wow
Biggest takeaway for me, aside from that astonishing horsepower you are getting out of these low-revving engines, was the rider choosing the old Honda as the better handling bike and how he said it would be really close in a lap-time shootout with the new 450. MX bike technology has not advanced as much as the moto-media would have us believe, since the act of going fast around a dirt track with jumps and stuff is still dependent on the rider more than the bike and we actually had great bikes 3 decades ago that still can work well. Great video !!!
Man the exhaust on that kx500 just looks amazing
Awesome filming from a drone! KX looks great. Both are beast's!!!
He's riding it so hard it sounds like a 250 the way he keeps it much higher in the rev range. He's literally riding the ever living dog shit out of that bike.
I have a 2003 CRF450R with RaceTech tuned front forks, they are amazing. Good choice for the 89.
Prettiest kaw I’ve ever seen just gorgeous
Gotta love the old 500's. Heavily de-tuned in stock trim. You can work 70 rwhp out of them and still have a reliable bike.
More like 62hp tops dude.. & that or any more you can't put dwn to the ground. Still gettin beat by a new CRF450R.
The 75hp claim is a bunch of b.s.
Dudes just trying to drum up business/fame for himself. The dude is flat out full of it. Unless that CPI is worth 15hp, they're full of it. Lol

Thanks for linking those. Proof these 72hp & 75hp are totally bogus.
Bullshit Ben Probst is full of it. What they do to the cr engine is a butcher job by the way. He cuts out the center exhaust bridge which is totally the wrong thing to do. Turns it into a piston & ring eating piece of garbage.
I'd put one of my cr500 or kx500 builds up against those bikes on any dyno anywhere & punk those out. I don't even need a bigger carb or a CPI exhaust. Stock carb, standard bore & a typical fmf or pro circuit pipe & I'm over those numbers & STILL have the monster bottom with stock like reliability.
I love the CPI pipes on both, but I can only imagine the cost😬. I had a1988 Cr 500 ported and polished but I sold it and got the kx500.... Still stock cylinder, just exhaust and jetted. Preference toward the kx for me
Ewwwwa
Up the cr buddy can’t get better than the 90s bikes x
800buks Belgium CPI pipe
THAT S SO SICK!!! I HAD A CR 500 OLD CHASSIS AND I WAS WORKING ON CONVERTING INTO 2005 250F CHASSIS BUT INTERESTED IN THE FACT THAT HE LIKE OLD SCHOOL CR BETTER. SICK VIDEO DO MORE!!!
Top notch video here guys, much enjoyed.
Perhaps you could do a more technical video next time you build a motor on the nitty gritty points of building such a high horsepower motor, porting, head work, reeds, jetting timing etc as that type of video gives old MX nerds like me wood.
100% gonna have to go with the kx500
You are the man two-stroke way to go go always win at the tracks far as I'm concerned good job with your bikes
That kx500 is a pure beast
Awesome video guys!!!
Awesome
Bring them back already !!! The 2 strokes are a man’s bike the 500’s are gladiator bikes
Loved watching this. Thank you for posting!
Thank you for running in! More to come!
I have a KX500 in a CRF250 frame. It definitely wears you out racing.
I have never seen anyone ride a 500 that good. Like tyler I prefer the CR500 over the Kawasaki, although I am in love with THAT KX500AF.
like stock for stock? yeah the kx still had that funky 80s look and although both felt bulky the kx felt really bulky and had that funky looking engine although the engine was more capable and modern.
I think the ultimate bike build would be a 250f with a crf 150f engine swap with a turbo. Build a bike that makes just as much hp but has almost one third less rotational Mass. Rotational mass is what really gives a bike its heavy feeling not its weight most of the time. It's why a 450 can weigh almost the same as a 250 F but feel way heavier when you're riding it.
@@4touchdowns1game29
So a heavy 4stroke & ADD a bunch more weight & terrible lag with a turbo? 🤣
@@keithpeterson3447 a 150f engine weighs less than a 250f engine genius 🤣. If you actually knew anything about turbos you would know that there is no lag anymore. Twin scroll turbos have been available for street bikes for a while now. A 150f on 15 psi of boost would be displacing about 300 cc's of air. If rules wanted to make it fair they could limit them to about 10 psi that would probably make about 250 cc's. It would make racing more interesting. I would definitely rather have the 150 motor with the turbo even if it made the exact same power as a 250f just because it would weigh less still and it would have less rotational Mass which is the most important thing.
@@4touchdowns1game29
So the turbo components don't weigh anything?
You're saying a small 150 is gonna have better throttle response than a 450? 🤣
You're one of those theory guys. They don't like the real world. They get mad when things are pointed out contrary to their theories.
Edit to add:
....& the reliability issues added to what's supposed to be a race bike. You must like problems.
Bada$$ bikes! The cr500 has such a unique and menacing bark compared to all the other big bores.
Glad I have been around long enough to have been to Kenworthy, Redbud and watch the 500 class mx championships a few times. LaRocco, Kiedrowski, Jeff Ward etc. Top guys seemed to never let off the throttle.
In the late 80's a guy had a Maico 490 for sale, not sure the year of this Maico...my buddy rode it first, then I tried it out. Neither of us wanted to buy it because it actually was scary to ride, it was violent with bad suspension...I remember when I went full throttle I laughed and said to myself, hell no.
That Kawasaki is so sick! But whatever port work was done to the honda just gives my ears much pleasure
Nice Job Guys Those bikes would be great at sunrise or sand hill ranch I raced a Honda cr 500 1984 in the 1984 golden state national won 4 races on that CR 500 in the intermiate class back then ( not the pro class. Loved that cr 500, used to watch the whole honda team rail in JT gear, Omaha, lechien, balley, hannah
that kx is just a unit im only 20 seconds into the vid what a machine
The 2019 crf450's where laying down 60hp in the shootouts and everybody bitched how it was too much.
Jeez that CR is sexy...
Give me more of those drone views!!!! 😍 maaaaan that's awesome 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻
guy riding---braaAAAAAAAP !!!!!!
every 500 two stroke owner watching- "shift ! SHIFT!!!
and stop using the clutch outta corners...SHIFT !!! "
Lol yeah if the dude shifted he would've Shit his pants!!
Bought a MINT 1987 CR500 in 1998 for $700 bucks…dear God if I could go back in time!
I think the Honda cr250 and cr500 are the best bike's you can buy especially around the 1994 to 1998
Miss my CR500 they were great times
Liked before I’ve watched anything 👌🏻
Still the baddest dogs on the block
That's the best looking kx i have ever seen.
I'm am a BRP XR guy but being a big bore fanatic the 500 Cr was ripping the kx 500 as well was a beast these modified 500s are both bad ass
2 strokes rule.. always will...
Be interesting with the kx motor in a new 2025 kx450 frame with works suspension 🤤 awesome bikes💪💯
Those bikes are beautiful! 👌🏻👌🏻💨💨
It takes a beast of a man to ride one of these I’m 16 and want to ride one
cool.
looked like Spiderman goin round there 😎 👍
Long live the bigbore 2strokes !! Awesome Awesome machines !!!! 2 strokes truck , 4 strokes s**k !!
Great job on the video it was awesome question I have a Tom Morgan motor in my KX 500 wondering if adding the reed spacer like you have will gain anything on mine on the Dyno ? Correct me if I’m wrong I believe it helps expose the boost port better?
Who ported them . I didn't catch the name good enough to look them up?
75 hp😍🏆
CR500 AIN'T NOTHING LIKE HONDA
Yo I think the yellow rims and cr look AMAZING
If you can ride a 2-stroke you'll beet a 4-stroke every time.
I may partially agree that in small bore 2 strokes are better with you but holy shit I’m not gonna listen to someone that can’t spell beat.
I may partially agree that small bore 2 strokes are better with you but holy shit I’m not gonna listen to someone that can’t spell beat.
And once again may I preach rider not the bike.
Please explain the engine work done to both bikes. If you were to build the CR to the KX SPECS what RWHP would it be?
I bought a kx500 because the deal was real good and holy shit it’s a beast
So bottom line, the guys who raced 2 strokes were in better shape & maybe more skilled than todays 4 stroke riders. I gotta get another CR!
Where did Ben do the motor work? I’ve got a CR I’d like to do some work on to open her up.

Man taking out the bridges in the ports make those things go through pistons a LOT faster!
Making power & retain the reliability with the bridges are what you'd want.
...unless they're gonna be just a drag bike. Otherwise they'll need pistons tossed at them if they're gonna get time put on them.
Sweet bikes but I like the original framed bike better. I'm more of a purist.
Off the chain
the guy may of felt more comfortable on the CRf. but damn was he quick on the kawasaki u could clearly see he was much faster on the kawasaki. personally i’m in love with that kawasaki
Man! The drone cant even keep up at 1:37
Somebody has some really nice toys, and really HUGE balls!!
i know a guy breaking his leg by kickstarting a cr500 xD
Beast mode, that's when men were men
Is time traveling legal?
that cr though 🥵🥵🥵🥵
Imagine waving a map gas torch at a nickel plated pipe THAT LONG to make it look like something else....
Ferry good brother
Ah man , I have to figure out how to get me a bike !!!
Great show hope the KX can ride for long and how is the mentainance like, what do you think needs to be paid attention to more on the KX?
Owners like you..
I've never owned the KX500 but the CR500 didn't need any maintenance other than the basics, air filter, etc.
The CR motor is significantly more reliable than the KX motor. That's why the CR500 motor is in a bajillion difference things like hybrid quads, shifter karts, etc, and the KX motor isn't.
@@kelceyk8199 100%
I'd put a steel sleeve in the KX, keep the power valves and air filter clean, and it should last decades.
Bad ass
I ride a Suzuki bud . Lol . What gearing is on the cr500 ? 14-49 ?
0:55 that dude is huge the 500 looks like a 85 when he sits on it😂😂
wassup man this is devyn from grandpa and grandma
Cr is the best!!
Rider skill off the charts. Backward baseball cap is a fail.
I bet the owner guy can use about 24hp on the track 😂
Saved best for last
Awesome comparison bro which one were you saying had a more violent hit?
The KX! That thing was so gnarly.
@@weekendwarriorsmx I bet LOL he said a total of 578 Cc or something holy smokes I had a 98 KX250 which was supposedly the best year or power on the KX250 and mine was a 265 Big Bore boy if you had it a little bit too lean or the timing Advance just a little bit she was barely rideable I can just imagine a 578 LOL
Everybody knows that the 85CR is the big daddy.
they should've used an AF cr500 for sure
should've compare 2022 Crf450 to that KX500AF..
Thats how ya ride
I’ve always liked the 89 CR500 but KX500 forever
And why does ama race 4 strokes again????
I watch my friend Brian B. Pull off a truck new 🐄 aski 450 1995...20 min. Later load 450k back up took it back reason why,Randy G. Tt500yamha tore it up.he was so mad just bought it took it back bought 4wheeler😁so I bought Randy's tt500 1980 I love it.ride all the time 42years old bike run aweasome big 🐻 4stroke💪
The kx500 was a nicer sounding bike.
Kawa kx 500 the top

Whats the AF mean ......auto focus ??
Aluminum frame.
hey which track is this?
Jordan river!
Honda all the way for me
The crs always had better motors just worse suspention
Not saying your lying but for a 500 you really can’t get any bigger then 60hp just from experience. And there is no way your telling the truth about both bikes are you can’t be 4hp of by a whole built motor vs a stock motor with some port work it’s literally impossible. But they are nice bikes anyway
the kx has a big bore kit and milled crank that's 578 cc I think they can get 70 hp outta that
@@tmfg395 there is no way in hell it’s making that, I make race bikes for a living as I have a race team in the uk. A cr500 that was put on a dyno made 52.3hp on average and that was stock. It had a custom made cpi pipe, had 2mm ported, vforce reeds, had a 3mm Reed spacer, had a Kehin 38mm with STIC, and it also had a vortex ecu and the highest we could get was 56.8hp. With a 550 kit and a stroker maybe we would get is 60hp max. I’m not trying to call anyone a liar but numbers don’t add up. The bike is ridiculous quick anyway so adding performance you really want to smooth the power out while increasing the over Rev.
@@tylersvensson4468 from my experience you are spot on. I agree with you.
@@baby-sharkgto4902 at least someone agrees with me. The bikes are amazing but like I said numbers don’t add up. I guess it’s people like this that say well yeah it made 65hp just so people react more when in reality it makes 52hp 🤷🏻 there sweet bike and that kawi rips but no where near 70hp
I had a lt500 quad that made 80 hp on a dyno....boring the cylinder does very little it just moves the bmep down as the hole is x3 and ports are x2. The kx has kips...... much more potential than the cr...
Please let's not sugarcoat s***. F*** four strokes!
The cr all day!!!
Great ride!
But when your ride a two strokes it's no good to rev that hard when airborne cause it doesn't have an rpm limitation and so the engine will hurt.
You can do that on a four strokes.
For the rest great job out there!
Two stroke can be revealed there bud. You apparently don't know enough about two stroke engines.
Daft question but its not, Ive never done motor cross as a massive hobbie or hit jumps like that, But do swinging the back end out an back in during air time make the bike travel further in the air???
Can someone explain plz lol, Will bug me, An i dont see many RM's about in America, Here in the UK RM's used be everywhere, Anyone from cardiff in the 90s would know about dirt road lol, Farmer gave everyone a field so they never blipped up his other fields, An it was called dirt road, Not many places left like that in the UK anymore, An the moment you use a crosser anywhere you got police coming to take your bike off you, When i was growing up everyone had motor cross bikes, Saying that with the Sur-rons that are almost silent is obviously the best option for people, Makes sence why people are buying high powered E-bikes....
cr500
Everyone who watched and didn’t like probably ride Shitzuki.
No such thing as a shitzuki yes it sucks they have decided to bow out I don't think they've ever built a bad machine opposite actually they've always been one of the best how race podiums and wins and championships they have with Carmichael and Stewart decoster and many many more throughout their history
@@kylelangworthy9641 Inconsistency. They have failed to consistantly make a competitive bike. They'll have a bike that wins shootouts then they won't change it or they'll make changes in the wrong direction. They cheap out on things (fasteners, clutch basket, hub etc). They simply don't update their bikes often enough to keep up with the other manufacturers. Resale value is bad and not to mention the problems they’ve had with them going to false neutral.
Still better than a ktm
