Snape is one of the most complex characters in literature or movies and Alan Rickman was just incredible in this role, even better than in the books. Rickman knew about Snapes motivation and it shows, and he did it so subtle, mostly with just a look and fleeding expression that did not match with the evil Potions Master (something that could not be really done in the books without giving too much away) that always left me thinking. He even contradicted the directors and refused their directions but never disclosed what he has been told by Rowling because he promised not to. He never did, not even after the movies and he always refused to disclose anything about Snape during interviews so kids that did not have seen or read it to the end could not accidentally hear it. Favorite character? - without doubt Snape.

I love the battle at Hogwarts. I love that the scene goes through the various "monsters" that Harry faced throughout the movies. Starting with the Troll, then spiders, the werewolf, the dementors. I just love that attention to detail.
And Snape's memories gets me in the feels EVERY TIME!! 😭😭😭

Seamus Finnigan had a big hand in the destruction of the bridge. I think it was McGonagall who suggested Seamus should help Neville because of his (Seamus') proclivity for accidental explosive potions; now he can "legally," purposefully, and heroically do some USEFUL damage.

Oh, man.... seeing Fred laying on the floor in the Great Hall dead is heartbreaking, but seeing Ron, who's usually so cheerful, break down in tears makes it worse every time I watch. Also, I don't know if you've ever noticed it, but the prophecy spoke of a baby born at the end of July....partially correct, since there were actually two: Neville Longbottom and Harry Potter. Harry and Neville were born in the same month and year, but Neville is one day older. He came through for Ron and Hermione when Nagini lunged at them by slicing off her head with the Sword of Gryffindor and effectively destroying the last of Voldemort's horcruxes. And you can't help but cheer when he makes that speech to Voldemort and his evil crew.

I talk shit about the movies a lot, and I really mean a lot... they more than didn't live up to my expectations... but I'm still always sad when they end. It leaves such a hollow feeling.
I love how Davin brought up James and his reputation throughout the movies, as well as the counter argument, because it's 100% true. We see the world through Harry's eyes, from an 11 year old boy to a 17 year old- well, adult according to wizarding law. Kids put their parents on pedestals, and everyone was always saying nice things about both his parents so of course he can't see them as anything else at first. Until he grows up, goes through puberty, learns to think for himself, and he learns that his dad really wasn't the white knight or whatever, at least not at first.
I will admit though... this counts for both the books and the movies... I hate the fact that we never really get to know James after Hogwarts. We don't really get to see that he's changed. We only ever really see him through Snape's eyes, with a little bit of Lupin's perspective, but you could argue that as a member of the Marauders he was heavily biased. Then again, so is Snape, just for different reasons.
Yet with the information given in the books, or even if you've only watched the movies... how do you know that James has changed? We don't really see any of it aside from everyone telling us that this is the case, and the fact that Lily ends up marrying him and she wouldn't have done that if James had still been an 'arrogant toerag' as she so eloquently put it.
Anyways, loved your reactions, can't wait for the 20th anniversary. I'm glad you're going to do that as well. Until then, ~Always

    • @clover2739
      @clover2739 Год назад +1

I think if we got to meet James properly I don’t think he would be as hated, especially in the books Sirius did worse things to snape than James did but people tend to love Sirius and that’s because we actually got to meet him and James from what we’ve heard matured way more than Sirius did. We hear biased views of course but it seems like everyone else loves James minus snape, lily’s friends hated snape as well and from what we know snape didn’t have a good reputation in school and was known for dark magic as well.
Of course this doesn’t stop the fact that how James and Sirius treated snape was horrible, but I think people tend to ignore the fact that snape was in a worse bully group who would use dark magic on muggle borns and call people slurs. Snape didn’t feel sorry for it either because he just said it was ‘for fun’ and only treated Lily as the exception, which she realised herself and she finally had to see snape for what he is. Lily was the only one who stood up for snape because of childhood loyalty but even she knew that she would try too hard to defend Snape’s bad actions all the time. So like I said I do think James and Sirius were wrong for doing it, but admittedly it’s hard for me to feel as sorry as I should do knowing this. The fact that people don’t take this information as seriously is because we weren’t shown what snape would do, just heard about it later on. Compared to how we got a memory from snape on James.
We know James has some good qualities but we never get to see it so all he is to people is a bully and that’s it, but I definitely think he’s a great friend to people I mean accepting Remus and doing everything he can to make his transformations better is something that’s telling considering how most people would be prejudice and tell everyone. We know he was against everything to do with dark magic and pureblood prejudice and we know that he gave both Sirius and Remus money to help them live after school. I think the issue with James is he is really loyal but at the same time if he doesn’t like you, especially with the slytherin’s views that were seen at that time then he goes the extreme in the opposite direction as well.
This is why if they ever decide to do a marauders series, I hope they aren’t biased to any of the characters and show them all how they are supposed to be both good and bad instead of picking sides because I think that would make things a lot more interesting.

In the aftermath of the Gringotts break-in, there's a little recognized event when they show Griphook's body lying on the floor: the sword of Gryffindor disappears. Can't recall if this occurs in the book, but is an important fact that the sword make itself available for future anti-Voldemort action. And here's something that's not explained in the movie: what do the incarcerated Slytherins do during the Battle of Hogwarts? Remain in danger as the castle is taken apart and crumbling? Do some of them turn over a new leaf and partake heroically? By the by: Nice T-shirt Davin!!!

My favorite is "Sectumsempra" meaning "To cut always." It's interesting for the lore in spell crafting. Come up with an idea for what you want a spell to do, then craft the Latin or Latin-esque phrase, assign a wand movement for it, and commit.

James did not steal his girlfriend. He felt like since he lowered himself to having a friend who was muggle-born he was owed the vagina and he was pissed he never got it he was the reason she died! Yea plus I feel like people talk a lot about how ‘oh no snape was bullied in school’ but ignore the fact that snape was also in a bully group in school who would use dark magic on muggleborns ‘for fun’ which is how snape described it to Lily and would call people slurs, Lily was only the exception and she admitted to defending his awful behaviour to her friends because of childhood loyalty but realised that she can’t. There’s a reason no one liked snape in school and the fact he had a reputation for dark magic even in first year is a bit concerning. Like yeah, bullying is bad of course and James and Sirius were in the wrong for doing it, but admittedly after knowing all that I can’t feel as sorry for know they are bullying someone like that as I should be. In real life when people see someone like how snape is described people would be all for the bullying… I can already tell you that much.

[Left a comment minutes ago at the Part I reaction video; please take a look.]
I just wanted to add one more bit to my comments in Part I:
I said Harry had several stand-ins for 'father', and I specified Hagrid, Dumbledore, and Sirius.
I wanted to include one more, but did not feel Part I comments was the place to put it.
Now I can say it was a foursome, because I feel in MANY ways Snape was a father to Harry as well.
Snape was reluctant in this, but how could he not, Harry being Lily's son. I can imagine Snape thinking, but for James Potter, Harry would have been HIS son. That had to enter into Snape's reactions to Harry bringing up and defending James to Snape. It had to be a kind of slap to the face every time it came up.
I'm not a Christian, but the Bible is one of several sacred texts I read when I was young.
When I see that pre-battle scene of George & Fred and Remus & Kingsley, I can't help but think back to Matthew 24:40-42:
"Then shall two be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left.
Two women shall be grinding at the mill; the one shall be taken, and the other left.
Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come."
You spoke so honestly about JK Rowling's talent & insight in character development & story construction:
I want to make certain people understand the great care in researching magic in function and history.
So much of the magical stuff (bezoars, hippogyffs, mandrakes, etc) there is HISTORY for. Five/six centuries ago, magic was higher education. The entire college system, including the wearing of robes, was a direct outgrowth of going to college and learning Natural Philosophy, which is what science was called back then. Astrology/astronomy, alchemy/chemistry, elements/physics. Rowling tweaked some of it, but that's perfectly in keeping with details degrading through teaching orally over time; the death curse 'avada kedavra' devolves to the useless nonsense word 'abracadabra'.
Like I said, I studied many sacred texts, comparative religion, myths, legends, metaphysics, psychology... Rowling did a masterful job in establishing this wizarding world firmly in actual history. You have no idea how impressed I was watching the film and hearing Snape ask 1st-year Harry the difference between monkshood and wolfsbane (I already knew they're the same thing).
    Helena Bonham Carter:
You really must do a reaction of her in "Big Fish". In that film, as the dying father goes on telling about his life as a 'shaggy dog story', tall tale fashion, it is revealed by a character played by Helena that, in the father's view, there are only two women in the world: his wife and all the others. And Helena plays several interactions of 'all the others'.
    Final comment:
So adult/married Harry is now an Auror.
Can you imagine being a wrongdoing wizard or witch and hearing the guy who stopped Voldemort is after you?
Would it not make more sense to turn yourself in IMMEDIATELY and ask for mercy?

Before you leave Harry Potter behind, please consoder watching Team StarKids' musical trilogy which parodies the films. Yes, you would need subtitles since the mics are university stage mics, but it is worth it. You would see characters differently (Malfoy is a fan favorite) and it is just worth it. Please, please, please consider it.

If you ever get the chance to see the play, "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child", you should. It picks up where this movie leaves off. Harry's son and Draco's son become best friends and have their own adventure, and that's all I'll say about it.

This series is a perfect example of how just because a creator or anyone really has some dumb opinions it doesn't mean they cant produce great work. We all have the right to have our own opinions however wrong they might be. It doesn't mean the work they have done is any less valid. We are all flawed in one way or another. We are in a world now where people are starting to be intolerant of how other peoples brains work... Its no longer "Well, we will just have to agree to disagree" instead its "Oh we don't think the exact same way?! #canceled!!!!"

Once again, with key plot points being left out of the movies. They don’t explain sufficiently why Voldemort using the killing curse didn’t kill Harry this time around either. It’s complicated magic but they could have found a way to dumb it down for movie goers. 29:16
My philosophy all around about pretty much any movie adopted from a book is that the book is superior. Also necessary to get the full story.

Dan didn't recognize it was the werewolf who killed Lavender, Fenrir Greyback, who'd turned Remus years before. I still can never understand movie-Potterheads, though. The movies are too full of holes. Even the BOOKS require Dumbledore at the end of each to explain what was left unanswered. That's why he had to be there in spirit at the end of this, to full that last duty.

This movie is just lower than many in the series for me because the ending is just vastly different than the book and too "hollywood"ized. Harrys reveal as being alive (to the other characters) was just not done as well as the book. The big "shock" at that moment was supposed to be Neville pulling the sword out the hat and instantly killing nagini while the cenaturs enter the fray from the forest and create chaos. Then Harry stays hidden under his cloak while stunning enemies (truly showing the power of the cloak that we don't really see thus far). The final battle should have had nothing to do with skill and spellwork with all the flying and stuff. It was mostly a verbal confrontation explaining that Harry has won and the elder wand doesnt choose Voldemort. And Bellatrix and Voldemort exploding instead of turning into lifeless corpses like Cedric is just anti-climactic and stupid. We should be able to see their lifeless bodies on the ground.

I wish to defend JK Rowling against the tired litany of slurs. What are the views you find reprehensible? The “transphobia”? Please divert from the activist songbook and look up what she said and wrote. As a woman I am continually disturbed by the consistency with which ‘defending women’s rights’ is warped into ‘transphobia’. Since she wrote Rita Skeeter and “is he daft or dangerous” into the novels, Rowling will not be surprised by the reality-free narratives that take root once enough people repeat and believe them. The Free Press also has a podcast about the whole affair.
