- Dr. Pournima Dhumale is a renowned Indian classical singer and a well-known exponent of the Agra Gharana. Born into a family that was rich in the tradition of Indian classical music, Dr. Dhumale received her initial training in music from her mother, Dr. Sulabha Thakar, herself a well-known musicologist and senior vocalist who underwent a rigorous ‘Talim’ under Padmavibhushan Hirabai Badodekar.
Dr. Dhumale received further extensive training from veteran singer Pt. Babanrao Haldankar for more than 15 years and Pt. Vivek Joshi from whom she is seeking talim in Agra and Gwalior gharanas for the last three years.
Today, she is counted among one of the most versatile singers of the Agra Gharana, and has a rich collection of rare raags and striking compositions in her repertoire. Her accomplishments include her mastery over ‘nom-tom’, that is considered a rare quality among the female singers. Her play with ‘Laya’ and ‘Taal’ , considered the prominent characteristics of the Agra Gharana, are melodious without losing the feminine touch over the renditions and in fact destroys the misconception about the Agra style being more masculine.
Pournima was a featured artiste at the FEA-curated Khayal Rang festival. She began her recital with an Agra gharana favourite, Raag Pancham, beginning with a nom-tom followed by compositions by Mehboob Khan 'Daras Piya' and her guru Babanrao Haldankar.
She was accompanied by Swapnil Bhise on tabla and Siddhesh Bicholkar on harmonium. Tanpura and vocal support was provided by her student Aradhana Hegde and Shruti Bujarbaruah.

I am in confusion ! Raga Pancham & Raga Hemant are same ragas in different names ? If someone make it clear ? Thanks .
Could someone please help me with this raag. There is no reference to Raag Pancham on the Tanarang web site which covers most well known raags and a search on Google produces virtually nothing. And it is such a lovely raag. Does it have an alternative name by which it is commonly known? Or could someone provide details of aroha and avaroha as a starting point? Any information would be much appreciated.

This souten rang raliya nonsense was brought in by the Muslim writers to please the rulers. Originally, hindustan classical music was completely devoted to Bhagwan Shrikrishna and a few to Durgamaa and Mahadev. Horrible distortion. Pity
