    I just wanted to say I have thoroughly enjoyed this series. I reenact with the 37th Georgia, and although I portray a private, I'm looking forward to purchasing a Navy Colt, to go along with my Enfield rifle. I intend to do some black powder hunting, and this kind of info is invaluable. Thank you. The bushcraft videos are a favorite, as well. Roll Tide!

    thank you for the wonderful videos and all the hard work . i was a builder of black powder rifles for 20 years and worked on revolvers. many of the guns were for competition some were used to win national championships. filing a little bit off the barrel is a waste of time. finding the right load and practice will make a good shot.if you are going to change anything have the trigger done by a pro. your shooting will improve greatly.

    Thank for tips, never thought about taking a tiny bit off the crown. If you over did it you would just haft to re crown the barrel. I took mine and put dove sights on the front that way I can tap them back and forth.

    I used a bore sight to get close at the start and then the "shoot & adjust" method. My Uberti 1858 New Army needed notches on the front sight for reference, even at 10 yards.

      i plan on doing a video about it..but the mind set at the time the guns were army issue was aim for the belt buckle..(so 12 or so inch high would be center of mass on soldier)..as the target get further way the buckle would be in the middle of the target..(75 yrds or so )..they did this to get the longest useable point of impact..if the gun was sighted for point of aim for 10 yrds the ball would hit the ground before hitting a man at 100yrds due to the sights being so low

    Blackie, let me let you in on a secrete. Pistol shooting isn't a exact science. I mean sure we can use a bore laser and put a really great set of sights on that old gun. But really it wasn't made for that. A pistol is a side arm a go-to if all else fails. Point and shoot. Like you point your finger. The more you do it the better you get. Its an eye hand coordination thing. That's why your target is center mass.
    I say don't use those tiny sights at all. Point the barrel like your index finger. Eventually you should be able to shoot from the hip. Eyes on target hand making the gun do what eyes and brain guide it to do. Easier than golf. Harder than pingpong.

  • @asherdog9248
    @asherdog9248 2 года назад

    A right hand shooter will always pull to the left by the application of pressure on the trigger. You can see this dry firing an empty Glock. I suspect the 8" barrel exaggerates this effect. A good gunsmith can dovetail a blade front sight on the barrel which can be drifted correct the problem.

    I had a Signature Series 1860 Army that threw balls all over the target. When I looked at it closely I could tell that the cylinder bores would not line up exactly with the barrel when the gun was at full cock. What a mess! I had no clue how to fix it, so I sold it at a gun show. Showed the guy what the gun was doing, but he didn't mind. As long as the hammer struck the cap everything was cool with him.

    Does firing roundball hit different than conicals?
    So if you fine tune your muzzle for round ball, you just live with the difference?
    Whats more suceptable to muzxle tuning, round ball or conical?

    • @BLACKIETHOMAS
      @BLACKIETHOMAS  4 года назад

      for general shooting i use round ball i use conicals for hunting so i sight my guns in for round ball and then use a mental adjustment for the conical point of impact

  • @deepsouthredneck1
    @deepsouthredneck1 7 лет назад

    Lots of people are confused by sighting in a firearm because they're trying to move their sights to their intended point of impact rather than adjust the sights to the point of impact where their barrel is pointing.

    • @Hercules1-v9m
      @Hercules1-v9m 3 года назад +1

      Probably could. Just keep in mind it's cheaper to replace the hammer rather than the barrel if you screw something up. Just deepen the hammer notch if you want to lower elevation. I personally like mine shooting high but again that's personal preference.

    • @craigjacob3704
      @craigjacob3704 3 года назад

      @@Hercules1-v9m yes as it is I just use Kentucky windage😁. I like the way the Remington's are built but have to admit the Colt replicas are much easier to shoot and be right on target.

    I found that the reason my 1860 shoots to right . well., I discovered it do to the heavy trigger pull, I was pulling the sights off with my finger .because, aiming six inches to the left my ball struck the target dead nuts center every time . to remedy that I took away some metal from the hammer spring , thus lightening the trigger pull and not pulling off my intended target sight. I would myself not widen the rear sight notch , your only asking for trouble, and you will undoubtedly have to replace that hammer. 9 times out of 10 its the shooter causing the the problem .these guns are extremely accurate right from the factory .I know because I own several of them.

      I tend to pull to the right on my Colt Walker and 1860 Army-especially the Walker. I’ve wondered if it might be because of the trigger offset in the frame on Colt and repro pistols. I’m right handed.

  • @Jari_Kuusisto

    At 9:00, it starts to go a little confusing. If you are hitting to the left, and you will file material away from the left side(when looking from the muzzle side) will it make the problem even worse then before?

    • @BLACKIETHOMAS
      @BLACKIETHOMAS  6 лет назад +1

      ok looking from the hammer..TOWARDS the muzzle..if you are hitting say to the left..you file on the right side of the hammer sight notch to correct
      if the gun is hitting way off to the left or right check to make sure muzzle is square so to speak often the muzzle is not..and it is making the ball impact further out ..so lets say the gun hits way left 10 inch or so from point of aim..and you find the muzzle is not square..you should draw file till the muzzle is square to the bore..and then reshoot..if this does not answer your question please tell me..i want to be clear on how to correct the point of aim

    @blackie, I am trying to sight in my colt arms repro 1862 pocket police. I cut a notch in rear sight, and shoots dead on at about 10ft (point blank) but I move a few steps back and they are flying way high! doesn't make sense to me unless it's a muzzle-not- square along the vertical. ??

    • @BLACKIETHOMAS
      @BLACKIETHOMAS  8 лет назад

      the round ball does fly in a sort of ark..remember i spoke of how the sight and barrel are a a angle..when you post a target say at 10ft..then at 15 20 25 30 the ball is still climbing..around 20 yrs or so depending on several factors the trajectory peaks and begins to drop..remember these guns were sighted to shot as far as possible thus the shooting high from the factory.. i suggest you try placing targets at 10 foot intervs and see at what point the drop happens..this will be your farthest point blank..then you have to add elevation from the rear sight to correct for range for range..hope this helps..if not let me know and i will do a video to hopefully shed more light on it..safe journeys

    • @sicesp
      @sicesp 8 лет назад

      +blackoracle69 . Thanks for that explanation, that does help. I think one problem is the front sight on this colt is only a tiny gold bead. My notch is still not deep enough, yet the front site is setting on the horizon and will disappear if I cut the rear notch further. have you seen that with colt reproductions? It seems the front site should be taller.

    • @sicesp
      @sicesp 8 лет назад

      +blackoracle69 aha! it is true. On this page someone has noted the front sights are too low: gunsoftheoldwest.com/2013/03/uberts-1862-police/2/ now I just have to decide what to do about that.
