  • Learn how to extend your growing season by building an easy, inexpensive, and effective hoophouse. We use four of these on our farm and move each one to two locations during the growing season. In the early spring we grow lettuce, broccoli, greens and potatoes in them and in the summer we grow tomatoes, squash, cucumbers, and peppers in them. These are a huge benefit to our farm in our cool climate! For a materials list and written instructions visit our blog: simplegiftsfarm.net/how-to-bui...

    I have watched dozens of videos with all sorts of elaborate PVC designs, none of which was particularly simple or versatile, nor were any of them as detailed as yours. Bunching up the plastic on each end is genius, as is your use of ropes and stakes in various spots on the hoophouse. I also appreciated the practics of setting up and tearing down for year in and out usage. But I literally laughed out loud when you introduced your ventilation system! Love it!
    Thank you so much for taking the time to produce this video. It was just what the farmer ordered! Cheers! Alan

    Really elegant design, very inspiring. We are wanting to use the same type of two-bed tunnels to harvest a wide variety of greens through a Pennsylvania winter. I wonder if we could use our tomato stakes as vertical supports when dealing with snow load..The wind is not so bad. I'd love to get away with using such a light material as 1" PVC. Thanks for your work.

    Thanks for the video. I followed the instruction to build a small hoop in my garden. I used a 4 mil. plastic because I want to grow sun loving vegetables, i.e. zucchini, okra, etc. I notice the 4 or 6 mil. plastic is not as transparent as the commercial grade sheeting. Do you think it allows enough sunlight in? Do you have to lift up one side of the sheeting once a while to let in more sunlight?

  • @DrJohnKassebaum
    @DrJohnKassebaum 9 лет назад +1

    You say you use 1" PVC conduit and that they are pre-bent. Do they need to be pre-bent or can you bend them to install without pre-bending? Also, how do you "pre-bend" them? Thanks for any clues! Great design by the way! -John

    • @SimpleGiftsFarmhouse
      @SimpleGiftsFarmhouse  9 лет назад +1

      Actually, they were not pre-bent when we first used them, the only reason the ones in the video are already bent is because we used them the previous year. They do not need to be pre-bent as they are easy to bend into place, especially if you have two adults setting it up.

    • @pattiwilliams-rosenswie4726
      @pattiwilliams-rosenswie4726 8 лет назад +1

      +Simple Gifts Farm what schedule pvc was used? We are being told by local hardware stores that schedule 40 & schedule 80 & conduit can not be bent.

    • @NYHalfassprepper
      @NYHalfassprepper 7 лет назад +2

      Patti Rosenswie I am a retired electrician. I have installed 1000s of feet of pvc conduit. both 40 and 80 can be bent. we typically make bends up to 90 degrees by heating the conduit. that is not required for this project because there is enough flex to get the bend required for a hoop house.

    • @SimpleGiftsFarmhouse
      @SimpleGiftsFarmhouse  9 лет назад +1

      We always take ours down in the winter, I think you would need something stronger to hold much snow. High winds can be an issue. We have found that burying most of the edges with dirt really helps with wind problems.
