- Step by step construction of a 14 x 42 foot temporary greenhouse structure using PVC piping and recycled materials investment about $300 and 14 Man Hours of work. If you are considering a structure to start your vegetables in late winter, consider a PVC Greenhouse to get a jump on Spring!
Great job, something to think about, install two layers of poly and use a bathroom fan to inflat between the two sheets. This will prevent the wind flapping and chewing up the plastic. Mine was still in great shape after four years when we sold the farm.
That's very well done, and an excellent video presentation. I have read that PE sheeting will react with PVC and fall apart, but if you skin the PVC/PE contact area with fabric tape it is not a problem (there is a special tape sold for this).
Using primer on the pvc before you lay the PE will also stop this reaction.
@@tinman2420 regular paint primer?
Instead of 6-8 mil poly that lasts barely a season, buy 'Rhino Hide' reinforced poly that's good for many years. Costs more upfront but WELL worth it!
Everyone knows how much can pay .. people r not idiots .. all know there is a better things to buy with a little more money of course
Thanks I have never heard of Rhino hide and will probably use that when we get to making our greenhouse.
6 mil can last at least 5 years. No need to waste your money on the rhino hide for a temporary greenhouse. Most people that leave comments like that are associated with the product that they are recommending....
@@lunkerpond9765 Mine will not be a temporary GH though so am glad of this advice.
@@linr2870 congrats
Good video. No BS, no clowning, no stupid jokes, no annoying music, just good information. Good to know there are still some adults on RUclips.
(off topic, sorry 😊)
decent video , but - mate -. please use a better camera .
cannot turn back time,- but yea... it was me and the father-in-law on a weekend - next time :)
good job for a very practical and beautiful green house, I will copy that when I get back to the Philippines.. thanks for this video.. God bless and have an abundant harvesting
Do you need it in the Philippines when it doesn't get cold? Just curious.
@@mahal9394 certain foods benefit from a greenhouse. too much direct sunlight is bad or they need humidity even too much rain is bad.
Excellent to see that woodprix has new plans what helped me save some money and energy to build it.
Thanks for that idea
interesting points ,if anyone else trying to find out backyard storage sheds plans try *WoodBlueprints. Com* Ive heard some decent things about it and my colleague got cool success with it.
If you drill tiny pinholes in the underside of the arches you could connect a hose to the main center piece of PVC & you could then water all the plants inside whenever needed.
You shouldn’t water veggie plants from above.. causes disease form water on their leaves especially in a green house where it’s more humid and gets no wind..
@@julisagonzalez657 That's good to know, thanks, I didn't realize that. Then instead of pinholes like a sprinkler system you could still use the frame to deliver the water but tap into it with small drip tubes from the frame down to each of the plants base.
@@dans381 ok so you're saying water tubes inside his pvc will not freeze? Is that it?
@@ronmiller7248 I was not saying anything about water freezing, water would freeze if it gets cold enough.... I was just pointing out a simple way to pipe water throughout the greenhouse. You wouldn't need to put water tubes inside the frame, the frame would become the tubes. The entire frame is all connected (& hollow) so by attaching a water supply to one point of the frame, then the frame itself can be the water tubes & carry the water to any point you need.
@ Dan S what about the arches base the water would leak at the bottom where it’s inserted onto the rebar posts 😂
I know you did this years ago. Looks good. I have a few questions. What size pvc pipe did you use and did you have to put further bracing in to handle the snow and wind?
I'd planned to do something like this with larger diameter tube for a temporary spray booth to paint car panels. Also, stop with the vertical video!
thank you all viewers for bringing this to 20,000 views in just over 4 months! There are other How-Tos at www.HGVids.com or tell me what you'd like to see a demo of...
Nick Tamble Have you considered instead of popping the pvc over droppers, to rather close it off at the bottom with additional pipe and t-pieces to create one seamless structure. Then drill small holes in strategic places and use the frame as an irrigation system?
+Nick Tamble Great video *Thumbs up*
How about DIY install video of chain link fence around a backyard??
I like thos one better then any I've seen so far. I would love a mattersl list... half inch pvc? Poly here comes in 20x100. Is 20 feet wide enough?? Love your end wall. Best I've seen... I'm in AK this is exactly what I need to extend the browning season...
Nick. What schedule PBC?
My experience with PVC-supported plastic structure is you must absolutely remove the sheeting before first snow in winter, or the weight of the snow has no problem snapping off the PVC. But it is a decent setup for the money and pretty easy to build.
You could reinforce da PVC with rebar
This video is so inspiring! It made my day 02/21/21. Great project management report. A++++ work for you & the old man!
A++++? What is this a marijuana rating scale? Everything these days is AAAA+ or AAA+. No more B, C, D, E, and F. Now it's just A++++, A+++, A++, and A+; even a normal A is hard to come by.
Decent info on the video, though I had 5 seizures and a migraine trying to watch the shaky video and listening to the wind noise. #ouch
the poly was wrapped around a modified 2x2 (elongated) and then "pulled tight" and screwed into the 2x12 base.
Thank you for sharing! It looks great and I'm hoping to build a smaller version for myself 😁
one of the best greenhouse video on the net.
how long do you think that greenhouse will last? UV and all, ty
why thanks! This greenhouse sustained some wind damage 2 months in and we decided to take it down due to it being after last-frost and the covered protection was no longer needed. I highly recommend a protected site with wind coverage - but one that affords adequate sunlight too. Inspect it each time you go out to it - to look for tears or otherwise blemishes to the poly.
hoo, that is something to consider...
i want my green house to last so i should get steel pipes instead of plastic. and a thick poly 6-8 mils. I would like to build a 15' x 15' but i think i will need help to bend the pipes, any recommendation? ty
+Nick Tamble Too bad the wind damaged it. How would you improve the design to prevent that? Sometime you've got to work with the site at hand.
Sadly in most parts of tbe usa where this greenhouse should be put up, it would only last till the town zoning gestapho make you tear it down. So always vote for townspeople that like gardening and will not zone it to illegal.
***** What is simple - county made me tear mine down, until after I met many criteria - hence me saying vote them out of office.
How did you attach the wood framing around the top edge to the pvc?
How did you secure the poly wrap to the boards?
I couldn't get this from viewing the video.
I made one of these a few years back and I love it. I covered mine with screen to keep the bugs out but allow the wind to blow through. I didn't glue mine down for easy disassemble in case of one of those pesty hurricanes comes through the area. Nice job and video.
I'm freaking jealous. $300 and only 14 hrs labor total. Food security for a very large family. Thanks for some excellent ideas for construction.
A nice transparent greenhouse is pretty, but what most people don't understand is that you can keep it warmer in winter by covering the non-sun sides with aluminized poly or reflective insulation blankets. You can't get sun heat in from the north and most of the east and west sides anyway in winter. Just the south side and half of the top on the south side will contribute solar heat. The reflective insulation will greatly increase your warming inside, and prevent loss at night.Similarly covering the sun side also just at night is even better, with a roll-up aluminized insulative blanket or tarp.
thanks for the comment - interesting insight
I dig the idear...for clarity, are you perhaps referring to one of those metallic fold-up "blankets" that emergency-minded people keep in their cars? They come packaged all folded neatly in a probably 4"x6" packet?
If not, could you give me a description that my rookie self would be able to take to one of the Home stores and find?
Many thanks in advance.
They have numerous aluminized material, rigid as well as sheet-like. If you were desperate you could use aluminum foil and white glue. But most of the insulation sheets they sell also come aluminized.
would it keep it much warmer in 20 degree weather? how much warmer?
yes do this
Pro tip, film videos in landscape [horizontally], not in portrait [vertically]. All TV's and computers are designed to view videos in that format, thanks
Great video though, right? Lol
Lol i flipped my phone after reading and omg
I cant even finish watching now
So many people don't realize that their camera phone works 150% better in horizontal position. Vertical really puts limits on picture size.
We're going to copy this job very professional and low cost, Thank You very much
Good job Mr.Nick Tamble...thank's for you video......Good luck brother...from Indonesia PEACE...SAVE EARTH.
So, I actually built my greenhouse (60'x12') by this design. I think it is almost a good design and worked pretty well for the first month. One of the problems I came up against was in the pvc joints being weak points in the structure. Wind the other day was between 20-30 mph and that busted three joints, and that's not even very windy for this area(Helena, MT). However, I plan to replace any broken joints with single poles of pvc 20' long and run them through the cross joints. Not a bad design and fairly cheap, just needs some work.
thanks for comment Ian!
it would have been nice if you turned your camera sideways so it looked more of the screen and you did a lot more in front of it it's hard to see what you're doing you're just bouncing from one place to another and I can't really see what you're doing so thank you but no thank you
dont record video in vertical camer mode, its hard to watch and the field of view is way smaller.always shoot video in wide angle horizontal. vertical is only for photos.
thanks for the info in this video.
Tasty Worker oh boo hoo tinker bell!
fireball and mudflap He was just giving some kindly good advice. Sheesh!
Yes, good advise! it is always annoying trying to watch a video like that. Causes many viewers to just leave also so lose the hit on the video. I am a person Who normally would just leave soon as I see that dumb camera mode! Only reason I did watch this video is because I plan to build a similar greenhouse very soon and never hurts to look for tips and tricks to do a better job. Good video other than camera mode, though nothing new to me I did not already know.
I would also guess reason for so many thumbs down was for the camera mode as I thought the video was pretty good otherwise.
Sorry this wasnt really an issue
Yes, great video and thank you so much for doing it. I agree that it would have been much easier to watch if you had held the camera the right way though! Many people will be put off because of this and not bother watching it which is a shame after all your hard work.
do you have a materials list for this project?
--Rick
Apparently he doesn’t care
Too much harvest. No time to stop for a list.
@@SextonRocks thanks for the reply! it's a great project a materials list would be helpful to replicate it.
Bountiful Harvests my Friend!
that's a really well built DIY greenhouse, great job!
At 13:40 you said 10 till 8. No leaves on the trees? Wearing coats? Located in North America? Still pretty bright outside? You need a new watch?
If you're in a snow area, in that season, put posts from ground to top or heavy snow will crunch it. We learned the hard way.
good point. also, heating in the winter can be VERY costly!
Yes! Thank you!
how did you do the foundation, what materials did you use for it and did you have to prepare the ground/dirt? How did you tie the PVC into the foundation? I couldn't tell from the picture. Very blurry/grainy. What would you do different next time. How did you secure the end walls to the foundation?
So VERY impressive!! I just happened upon this video and I am so very glad I did, what a great project. Do you have any follow up on this, like how its holding up? Any problems encountered?
+My Old Kentucky Homestead Oops...I just read the other comments and learned of the wind damage, so sorry to hear that.
+My Old Kentucky Homestead
"WE" will just build another or repair the damaged greenhouse.
i like how he says WE and all he does is walk around with a camera (held 90 degrees off) and Frank does all the work.
There's no way to roll up the sides. That's the only problem I see, for if/when it gets too hot. If it's 75 degrees outside, you can bet it's pushing 100 degrees inside.
love this hoop house !!!does there happen to be a set of plans or a cutting list anywhere on the web or did you just make it up as you went along.I am needing a 12 x 20 to fit my yard.
I've just discovered your video and was wondering if you have a parts list for the hoop house you built (14 x 42). It would be appreciated. Thanks. Michel
Wonderful job! I like how you managed to use as much recycled wood where possible! It's encouraging me to make one for my 12x8' garedning space!
What kind of plastic do you used for this greenhouse?
Can we use regular 8mill plastic, from Home Depot?
Or have to be a special plastic for greenhouse?
I just priced those pieces at my local hardware store today. I plan to build one as well. Thanks for your product demonstration.
For snow, this requires at least four posts supporting a center beam. See SSL Family Dad channel for videos on how to with this design.
This video is very useful for me.. thank you
What kind of glue did you use? I've tried PVC pipe cement and it comes apart when trying to bend across. I'm using the same measurements as you.
I forget what grade, but we primed first (with the purple stuff) - and used a PVC cement...
PVC piping off gases and will cause the poly sheeting to deteriorate prematurely. The piping can have a layer of tape or even better, the fuzzy part of velcro adhered to it to prevent this from happening.
Jan Halcion Did not know that, but it makes perfect sense thankyou😀
Cap tape for truck caps maybe an easy cheap go to for that idea, I’ll try it. Thanks for the information I’ll tell the local farmers I see that as some of their poly hose problems
I learned it the hard way, had to replace the cover after 2 years..
I am sorry if I missed it, but what diameter PVC tubing did you use?
great job man, I will hire you some day once I open my nursery
Thanks Heron! Best fortune on the nursery...
My main wonder is how many feet of pvc did it take to build the greenhouse? How many feet of wood. Also, approximately how many pvc joints are there. I have to go buy this stuff. Please help. I need a materials list.
40 pieces of pvc 10' long, 40 cross connector pieces of, 6 tee connectors. There are three pvc joints per hoop and there are 13 hoops - so 39 joints...sorry, I do not have the total materials list on hand at the moment. The three items I mentioned will be the pvc items needed. Good luck and thanks for watching!
Thank u.. you are the man!
Great work guys! Definitely inspiring me to make one! How does it hold up to a snow load? Did you get much sagging in the poly over the years? How long did the poly last before needing replacement?
This is amazing how the structure is firm enough to not to bow in the center. Would you advice to have a supporting column in the center maybe? And what's the thickness of the pvcs you used? Thanks
do you have a materials list? that way i can know what to get from the hardware store.
great looking project
--Rick
I've been asked this a lot. I did not formally create a materials list - but am thinking to do so!
follow up on this question?
For the PVC fittings, check out greenhousemegastore.com the rest can be had from any hardware store.
Thank you my friend, my light just came on, I'm going to build us a 5x8 .we've wanted and needed one for a long time but they cost too much, but with your idea, I'll do it for around $100.00 sweet thanks again. Grow my own.
Great hopeful day I will have the room to build one. Many thanks for this great idear
nice share! how has it held up over the years? so do you need the 2x4 supports on the outside (against the doors) to keep the structure from collapsing? so will a wind hitting the wood ends be able to push the structure over and flaten it without the outside supports? I even wonder if outside guy wires on each end, pulling in the opposite direction would stabilize it? it looks like the plywood is attached with plastic ties to the pvs frame?
that's awesome thanksfor the idea dude
One tip. Use the gray electric conduit PVC. It's UV treated and resistant. The white plumbing PVC isn't. The conduit comes in diameters from 1/2 inch to 2 inches
Great work, Pop's was sure moving right along...good man.
I'm sure he knows more than just a trick or 2!
What schedule is the pvc pipe? Wouldn't it have been more prudent to not glue them and be able to dismantle if necessary? Or maybe use threaded pipe?
I WENT TO FARM BUREAU IN CONNECTICUT TO GET A LOAN TO MAKE A GREEN HOUSE THEY WONT GIVE ME BUT WHEN I BUILT MY OWN THE SAME WAY FOR 50 DOLLARS THEY STARTED BOTHERING ME.I JUST USED 2 10 FEET PVC PIPE ONE INCH THICK AND CONNECTED WITH 1 FEET 2 INCHES PVC PIPE AND PUT A CENTRAL WOOD SUPPORT. COVERED WITH SWIMMING POOL COVER .ALSO YOU CAN DISMANTLE IT WHEN YOU MOVE .
rogersantiques rs wondering how one types with all caps on.
Captively
I have a few questions? How high of winds can that greenhouse handle.
I live in a high wind area, 30, 40 to 60 mph at times. Any though or suggestions?
I used to work in the market garden industry, and when we put these type of tunnel up we used to burry the plastic sheeting around the edge it helped give more stability in high wind, at least lesson the chance of the wind taking it anyway.
Well done. Looking good.
Do you have any updates? Stands up OK so far?
How's the poly? any UV damage?
You did not paint the pvc. Do you see any deterioration?
This is really nice but you only mentioned the 5 foot sections of pvc but not the size of the pvc pieces that you attach them to Do you have specs?
Thank you
Nice. Inspiring me and my hubby to do a small scale one in our garden. :)
Thank you for the video. A great way to start a greenhouse. For those who feel the video could have been more stable or flipped to accommodate the view, the message was how to build a greenhouse, not the best way to video building a greenhouse. Great job, I have done some similar but learned some great tips on how to improve what I have done and will do in the future. Thanks again.
How has the PVC held up to the sunlight over the years?
es el mejor que he visto por internet ,muchas gracias por explicar de la mejor manera, saludos de argentina.
muchos gracias Canal! Tiene un buen dia y ano y bueno suerte!
Damn! E usted espanol hablomo! Mucho jealous hoy!
8 inch pipe with U joints that lock into place for the base. Having a strong base is always a good start! You could run another 8 inch pipe down the center to support the roof. You could pre fab watering tubes in it to mist the green house. Have fun good luck!
I really liked the 2 x8 boards at the foot with the clamps. I was going to build a very similar structure only with end caps at the bottom sides. I had also planned on using strips of plywood attached to the outside of the PVC with bailing wire as I was told PVC and poly didn't work well together. Did yours work out well in that regard and did you use schedule 10 or 40 pvc. The reason I wanted end caps was for so I could attach a hose, timer and misting heads for times when I need water. Great video Nick. Thank you.
Schedule 40. - more rigid the better. I've been seeing comments about PVC and poly not jiving together. We took down poly so I don't have info on how the combination is impacted over time
Im building my own greenhouse from your dimensions, can you tell me what length boards you used for your walls on each side and how many including the ones you used to join them together?
I had fun messing about here. Learned something, too. Thank you.
Thanks Nick, I got some great ideas watching your design and construction process.
end windows and doors for ventilation...could roll up sides at the bottom also - only in protected sites as wind would be a problem...

When you say sorry pleas mean it. And do not commit it again. Sorry is not an excuse but an appology. A promise after a bad what you make. Not before. British English and other stupid nations need to learn this.
Why not design a pvc green house using larger pvc pipe and put hoses inside to water it. A total green house kit and market it? Novartis! ; )
Nice job Don,t worry about the landscape thing for filming the info is why we are here
great video. used some of your ideas.

.. HORIZONTAL
This is a neat design. I really appreciate the way you used all recycled materials. But, if you do not have used boards to wrap your film at the bottom with, there is a product called batten tape that I believe would be less expensive than the lumber. You just place it over your polyfilm and staple through it to fasten the sheets.
Great video! can't wait to show hubby this, he has wanted to put up a greenhouse. Before this video watched one on a purchased one for over $1k for 10x10 that is falling apart after 1 year! Love this idea! Thanks for sharing!
what was the size of the plastic sheet?
Was that regular 6mil visqueen? If the entire project was under 300 dollars and it was greenhouse film I need to know where you got it? :)
Before I purchased the commercial greenhouse that I now have (it's 30'X100') I built something similar to this one (it was12'X24'). The 12X24 was covered with regular 6mil visqueen and that plastic became brittle in about 6 months and basically shattered. You need greenhouse film if you want it to last more than a year. It's not cheap but well worth the investment if you want to do this long term. I subbed your channel and hope to see more from you greenhouse in the future as I tend to mine.
Chuck
It was 4 mil poly I believe - not "greenhouse" grade...we were doing this as cheaply as possible and did not count the cost of the wood framing or ends - as we had this as recycled materials. I agree on the higher-grade greenhouse film, especially for zone 4 gardening...thanks for the input
Are you still growing in it?
Chuck
Fensterfarm Greenhouse no, it is not up during the winter. as soon as weather permits (after last frost) - the poly was taken down and it is used as a more traditional garden...
not greenhouse grade means that it is not food grade. you are putting toxings in your other wise healthy food.
@fensterfarm greenhouse look for ldpe plastic or "growplastics" yes its more expensive then pet , but it last longer and has no "known" release of harmfull toxins, you stil have a 6 f by 30f for 15 bucks
Saludos y buena suerte!
If the pipes are hollow could they be used as a watering system ?
+Richard Laut It would require some engineering but definitely would work
+Richard Laut I like the way you think. U r an inventor.
No I just saw your great idear and Iit made me think many thanks
+Richard Laut Yes, great idea! I can see this having the water sprayed from misters located all along the center pipe at the top jutting out to the left and right. Just hook your hose to the back end and fill with a timer. I wouldn't have it come out the bottom where it's attached to the re-bar though, you need to have pressure in the line to allow the water to run the length of he system, it would just go right out the first set of supports. Another idea would be to fill the ends, seal them and couple them back up, then run drip line above the sealed bottom segment back down to the soil.
Nice job, you make it look so easy, lol, I do everything by myself, so I have a hard time, but this is a nice tunnel house, wish I had the open sky you have. I'm in the mountains, and have too many pine trees, so low sun hours and cold nights in summer. Wish I had your greenhouse! Stay Free People!
Yep i do everything myself, its amazing what you can do, just takes more brain than brawn.. and TIME lots of time 👍

Nice for Very Temporary....with the time and work involved try using Electrical Conduit instead of pvc.......Make it last.....

please learn to turn your phone sideways when filming. The small screen area is very annoying and hard to follow along.
I built one of these several years ago. The UV from the sun degraded the pvc it and made it brittle. The first spring storm that blew through destroyed it breaking most of the pipes. My wife still chuckles about it.
Did you do anything to remedy the brittle pvc? Im just brainstorming for my own greenhouse
U must of bought that cheap thin cw pvc...bc hw pvc aint gonna get brittle or brake in the sun for years and years
@@driveronehundrednine3225You could try using gorilla tape or paint the pvc to keep it from degrading.
