Clarification: I have 2 sisters, one has the Thinkpad T410 that I put together awhile back and the other now has this Elitebook 8440P. Some of my subscribers were asking me about that, just thought I should clarify.
I just recently got a core i5 Hp elitebook 8470p with a 1366 x 768 screen and it can handle 4k video on youtube as long as a lot of people are not on the internet. But i love the little laptop.
AA Computers and Technology why don't you use windows 10 though? It is better on day to day task and has edge, which while is worse than chrome has superior battery life and can run on any machine
With my laptop running windows 7 pro I don't use Google chrome or Internet explorer I use opera it ha a built in vpn and a built in battery saver that automatically turns on when the laptop is unplugged my battery was only lasting around 45 min with Google chrome now it is lasting over a hour and a half with opera.
Jon Mahashintina in my laptop it has far more battery than using it on chrome. I guess its because chrome is so battery draining, not that edge is battery saving
I have a refurbished Elitebook 8460 which is the model after this and it is the best computer I ever had. The 8460 is much improved over the 8440 and worth getting. The refurbisher upgraded the RAM to 8gb and put an SSD in it and it is lightning fast. It is much better than newer and more expensive laptops that I have had. The thing is it is as tough as a tank and weighs as much as one so I bought a Thinkpad x220 to carry around.
nice i cleaned out my hp elitebook 8570p with i5 3360M with a compressor and i put a formatted 320gb toshiba hdd in it. i installed windows 10 and now it is super fast!
I had that exact model for 5 years and it never failed me once! Replaced it with a Macbook air as the 8400P is a little heavy! Easily one of the best laptops I ever owned! Great video!
I just picked up a 8440p with an i7 640m,Nvidia graphics, 4 gb of ram and the best part:160gb intel SSD. The prior owner didnt have the charger thus I took a chance at $10 bucks! good chance. Works perfectly.
bought a base 520m, 4gb, 250gb 8440p in 2014 for $160 as something to run VCDS on and it has been fantastic ever since. As it sits today it is my primary machine and has a 640m that I inherited from a broken 8440w, 8gb ram, 120gb samsung evo 840 boot, 1tb storage hdd in a optical drive caddy, and upgraded to the 1600x900 display from 8440w. someday i'll get ambitious enough to put the dedicated vram board in it as they're like $20 on ebay. New battery from amazon actually gets like 3-4 hrs battery life on moderate screen brightness, lower end if streaming video or something else more demanding. thing is a little workhorse, runs pretty cool and quiet with new thermal paste/pads and I clean the heatsink fins pretty regularly. would recommend to anyone
HP bios have a hardware whitelist and will not allow most off the shelf components (like that memory you added) to be installed. I've had issues with HP laptop not accepting standard internal wireless cards, and Linux distributions as well. HP doesn't want you upgrading these systems, they want you to buy new models, or approved upgrade parts with their marked up prices.
Came here to add this as well. I have a pesky Lenovo which only accepts 10600 ddr3 ram nothing lower or higher....even with bios update etc... same with my Hp Touch Smart 9100 i got for $15....it's really irritating. i have 8gb 1600mhz i want to use, but no machine i have currently can use it!
I bought and upgraded one of these machines for my neighbour last month. She had a cheap notebook which angles broke quite early after purchase, due to her carrying it around and opening/closing it a lot. She does not play any games at all. Her machine(s) are mainly used to do office work and for browsing the net, playing some videos asf. . Therefore we decided to go for a used but solid quality build instead of a cheap new one. I found a good one with the dual core i7, 1600px display and almost every extension available already build in. Sadly this build does come without a dedicated graphics card. It had only 6GB, one stick only at 10xxMhz. Therefore i decided to buy 2 similar brand 4GB sticks. It does accept common 1333 ddr 3 RAM up to 8GB. There is a brand that does sell 1600 MHz that they do guarantee to run on the 8440p but sadly its too expensive. My own test with some common DDR3 1600 turned out to not be working. But it had double the amount of RAM chips than the ones that do work. Anyways. After the first ry with 1600MHz did not work out well, i thought its not worth the trouble to try another time for just that little tad of higher mem speed. That why i finally added 2x4GB at 1333. I ordered a caddy for a second harddisk that came along with an external CD-Rom Case. I put the DVD drive external and bought a pair of 256GB ssd's to let them run as RAID 0 for the system. This is kinda limited due to the systems SATA 2 only layout. However, i was planning to install a RAID 0 system drive on my own computer too, and therefore it was a good test run. After installing Windows 10, it took me a while to get all the hardware working. All the drivers are around. One does only have to do some research. The only problem was the microphone. It did show 1 unknown audio device which seems to be related to the stereo microphone. In Skype, i.e., i had to choose the proper device for the microphone to work. (two shown, one does work, the other doesn't) It cost me quite some time to make the fingerprint scanner work with WIN10, but thats probably mainly because it was the first time i had to face such a device and it took some research to find the proper driver working with WIN10 and this old machine. We finally added some 22" IPS Monitor, a bluetooth mouse/keyboard and a small docking station (not the advanced, as for that one the notebooks power adapter isn't powerful enough and one would need to buy an additional psu). To cut a long story short: This wasn't the cheapest solution for an office laptop. But the ease of access of the HP8440p was much better than anything else i had faced on laptops so far. It was a real pleasure to disassemble. WIN10 does run very smooth without any issues so far, despite the fact, that the systems limitations can't even make use of the real power of the ssd RAID 0. It runs better than a brand new 400€ discount ASUS notebook, that another friend of us had bought just 2 weeks before. At home she got a full desktop setup with external backup drive and full HD IPS display. And on the run she's got a solid machine that won't be breaking apart as soons as the former one, due to its really great quality in the making. (the screen is a bit poor for such a build-despite the high resolution. but that was known before as almost all tests did tell about it beforehand-for mobile tasks it is good enough)
It's not BIOS pickiness causing your problem with the Lenovo. I have literally DOZENS of Lenovo machines, desktops and laptops, and they aren't picky about RAM. There are one or 2 that won't allow RAM many steps faster than original in them, but a step or 2 faster is not an issue at all. Others will take damned near anything. Is that 8GB 1x8 or 2x4? What kind of Lenovo? I MAY have some 1600 4 or 8 DIMMs and SODIMMs I can test on various systems.
Its not only about one step or two faster, but also about memory architecture. i.e.: a 4GB memory module could be build out of 8 times 512kb pieces or 16 times 256kb pieces. i found, that if the build of the orig. mem module differs from the exchange modules piece count, its more likely to fail. but iam only a diy, and no pro. therefore take this with a grain of salt.
Gentleman Adventurer I think he must've had 1333mhz RAM, which it is unsupported on the CPU, or he had different 2 different speeds that affected the laptop itself.
FYI, for that VOID sticker leftover - Goo Gone. One large bottle for about $5 will last a LONG time, you can also get a spray bottle that is thicker, it hangs around longer on tough stickers. I use A LOT of GG working on auction systems to clean them up. Just don't get it anywhere near the COA stickers ;-)

@3:37 Those flat screws you have to be very careful if you are tightening them back up, otherwise they will be stuck and the only way to free it is to break it off. I had done that before, it is not fun. Also that is connected to the touchbar and the power button.
My HP Elitebook 8440p has 4GB of GDDR3 1060mhz, dual core i5 520m, WiFi card and standard 1336x768 built in monitor, Windows 10 and 1.5TB HDD (sometimes it has mounting issues) installed. And I am planning of upgrading my mobile CPU to i7 2630qm.
You picked the best one, the other one were hp elitebooks from a previos gen than hp 8440p, other one was hp 2540p which is a smaller version but less powerful and the completely black one I think is an even older one like 2005 2006 so the hp 8440p was the best option.
I was under the impression that if you put one stick of 2 gb ram alongside one stick of 4 gb ram that windows will only address two gigs on each of the two Rams. Likewise if you put 4 gb ram up against an 8 gb ram, windows will only address 4 gigs of RAM on each of the two rams. So basically they have to match, otherwise Windows was simply narrow utilization of the higher gb stick to mach the lower. Is this not the case?
I have an elitebook i just bought in perfect condition with an i7 processor and my windows score is 5.0 held back by graphics but all the other scores are 9 and 8.5. The ram on these are very specific too or else one stick won't work.
I am a Great Gpaw, and with this pandemic closing their school I bought two HP8440Ps for my Grand Children to do their online classes. I love the HP notebooks, they are as fast online as any four processor $2k notebook. I also have two WD 500GB SSDs I will upgrade them with. However, using any cloning software I get the same boot error of 0xc000000e and am stuck. HELP Please! :-)
This is a really late reply, but unfortunately Windows is so janky and broken that it's normally a better idea to work from a fresh install than to try to clone drives. I think I remember reading somewhere that cloning Windows from hard drives to solid state drives never works for some reason, possibly relating to the way Windows partitions drives if I remember correctly? Could be completely wrong about that though. I picked up one of these for free from work (Core i7, 240gb ssd, NVS 3100M, 8gb ram) The only thing that sucks about these is the battery life and GPU (not sure why yours had intel hd graphics? Its supposed to have NVS graphics), however you can get HP Docks and the extra battery bits that clip onto the bottom. I also found out with the nvidia card, the resolution is set to 1080p on mine, and not 1600x900. Maybe I have a special variant? Not sure.
I have a elitebook 8470p with a 1366 x 768 screen and the battery life is great and I could spend $90 to the the 2nd battery it has a i5 500gb hdd I am wanting to upgrade to a ssd and remove the dvd player and it has 4 gigs of ram and I am upgrading to 6 gigs. I can't say that I have any problems with mine.
Hmm, I think I'd much prefer those radeon 6000 series graphics compared to the NVS. I still find it strange that most people only get 1366x768 and mines at 1080p. Not seen many others with 1080p screens...
Yo man, I really need a new laptop that is strong, can be used for light video editing, and some gaming. My old one is going to die if i don't quit torturing it soon. So since you know something about laptops, could you give me some advice? I really wan't a thinkpad, but I just can't figure out wich to pick(hp is also an option or dell, but a thinkpad would be the best).
None of the Thinkpads I have (T50 series up to X230, dozens) have dedicated graphics, just Intel graphics. If you're going to game and video edit, you probably should look for a laptop with a dedicated graphics card.

Looks like a PGA CPU you might want to upgrade it. Would make it last at least a few more years. I think the i7 -640 m would fit nicely same 35w tdp 2 cores 4 threads 2.8ghz base 3.45ghz boost clock.

Hey, I have a question. I'm looking at upgrading from a t410 to either a M4600, M6600, 8760w, or a Dell Sandy bridge workstation. Most of the computers I'm considering have no os, but a Windows 7 COA. Anyone know a trustworthy source of getting a Windows 7 iso? Microsoft's iso site doesn't like oem keys.
And once you download these, if you think you'll be doing multiple installs, consider building a USB install stick, and Google how to make it so the installer can install multiple versions of Win7. I have sticks with 32-bit and sticks with 64-bit. My Win10 sticks have both 32 and 64 on the same stick. Never got around to doing that on the Win7 installs, I probably should to consolidate sticks.
i am watching this video from that laptop with windows 7 ultimate x64, but the cpu is dying, now i have reinstalled windows, and the cpu is as slow as an old 15year old celeron, and ti has too poor performance, fortunately cpu is not onboard

Yes you can. The best copy of Windows 7 to use the COA sticker on is Windows 7 Starter keys. BTW you can do it with Windows 8/8.1 Stickers.

I found a Sony Vaio in the dumpster and it works, just need to replace the keyboard and get a power supply for it

I have an HP Elitebook 2530P it has a 1.8 HDD so finding a 1.8 SSD has been a bit of a challenge.

The memory is not bad, the memory has to mach the other stick, this is a work station so its memory specific. And has to match.

I was completely wrong about the mobile CPU. There was a slight difference between Sandy bridge and Arriandale. Intel really need to fix that.
Don't worry about the cost of that bit set - work on enough laptops, and it will pay itself off quickly.

I have a elitebook 8470p with a 1366 x 768 screen and the battery life is great and I could spend $90 to the the 2nd battery it has a i5 500gb hdd I am wanting to upgrade to a ssd and remove the dvd player and it has 4 gigs of ram and I am upgrading to 6 gigs. I can't say that I have any problems with mine.
Hmm, I think I'd much prefer those radeon 6000 series graphics compared to the NVS. I still find it strange that most people only get 1366x768 and mines at 1080p. Not seen many others with 1080p screens...

Yo man, I really need a new laptop that is strong, can be used for light video editing, and some gaming. My old one is going to die if i don't quit torturing it soon. So since you know something about laptops, could you give me some advice? I really wan't a thinkpad, but I just can't figure out wich to pick(hp is also an option or dell, but a thinkpad would be the best).
None of the Thinkpads I have (T50 series up to X230, dozens) have dedicated graphics, just Intel graphics. If you're going to game and video edit, you probably should look for a laptop with a dedicated graphics card.

And once you download these, if you think you'll be doing multiple installs, consider building a USB install stick, and Google how to make it so the installer can install multiple versions of Win7.
I have sticks with 32-bit and sticks with 64-bit. My Win10 sticks have both 32 and 64 on the same stick. Never got around to doing that on the Win7 installs, I probably should to consolidate sticks.
