    In part 2 of my analysis of God of War 2018, we're gonna take a deep look 3 specific points I mentioned in my first GOW video. We're gonna look at the changes to the mechanics, and answer the important question of "why?" And hey, God Of War 5 is coming! I'm excited! I expect big improvements. Watch the first part here: • How God Of War was RUI...
    When we get to 50k subs, we're gonna talk about HALO!

      Tatzelwurms are just fucking annoying and hard to combo. They even have an unexpected unblockable attack. At least on GMGOW. Doing the mist world on GMGOW was annoying as fuck.
      And the stupid witches teleport if you start a combo on them, and if your 2nd attack is a powerful one, they teleport away and get their stupid invincibility back before it hits. Continuing the combo on another enemy isnt always a good idea either since the witch will power up if you let it recover in GMGOW. The game itself (in the loading screen) acknowledges that witches are the enemies that you want to take out first and prioritize.
      Although I guess that's what I get for being so stubborn. I mean the only reason to do GMGOW is for a shield or because many RUclipsrs played on GMGOW and it would be a bit humbling if I can't do the same.

    It is a shame that the classic God Of War games are brushed off as just mindless button mashing by the wider gaming community. I think the reason it is considered that way is because while it does incentivize using the more advanced techniques and moves, unlike Doom Eternal it doesn't force the player to play well and just allows players to button mash. This is the same reason that Titanfall 2 felt like CoD but with cool movement to Under The Mayo, when in reality if you actually get good at Titanfall 2 it plays nothing like CoD. It is unfortunate that these games won't get the recognition that they deserve.

    Edit: Now that time has passed (and in light of more people responding to this comment) I will make a few revisions to my original statement.
    I still feel like this video brings up some valid points related to the gameplay. If one compares it to the original GOW franchise, yes, the combat and movement is pretty terrible. However, I feel like this review does miss the point that GOW 2018 is *not* the same type of game as the originals. The developers tried to steer this game into more cinematic and story oriented gameplay which I think they did wonderfully on. I will now offer my personal analysis of this review:
    *No Jumping Section:* I feel like this point relies on the viewer ignoring the context of the game itself in favor of focusing solely on what came before. Platforming puzzles work well in the original games (Again, notice the hard emphasis on comparing to previous titles) because the gameplay was designed around the action platforming that already existed. Since the old GOWs were built on a base that emphasized the player's ability to move in different ways, platforming feels like a natural part of the experience. However, GOW 2018 is built on a base of storytelling and cinematic sequences. The general flow of the gameplay doesn't support platforming well because it would bog down the story heavy sequences GOW relies on to hook your attention. It would be a complete slog if the player was trying to pay attention to the rich storytelling only to have that immersion broken when they fail to jump a gap and fall to their death. It just isn't something that fits the mold GOW 2018 is trying to grow in.
    *Puzzle Section*: I do agree that the puzzles do get quite dull and I would have liked to see a greater variety throughout the game. Again, I must reiterate that this is mainly due to the game's decoupling from advanced platforming in favor of a more story rich environment. It's very natural that this game would be awkward for veterans to play because they're suddenly missing the old mechanics they're so used to playing with. This issue (along with others) will hopefully be improved upon in future games.
    *Combat Section*: I completely agree with this assessment of the combat. I myself did fall into the "hit it until it dies" combat loop which made combat rooms a bit of a slog. Enemy variety was also a huge problem (I believe Mayo touched on this in the first review he did) and I really hate the "Oh look, your next boss is another troll" too. Again, we'll see if the next game improves on this at all.
    Overall I think this review suffers because it relies too heavily on comparing GOW 2018 to the old franchise. If one assumes that the new game *absolutely must follow the original blueprint word for word*, then the new game will seem like trash. I think this is not a proper, objective, and unbiased way of analyzing any game. What GOW 2018 tries is a new formula that appeals to a wider audience and if this audience happens to be total newbies to gaming, I think that's fine. I myself enjoyed this game a lot despite having seen what other games have done better in regards to gameplay. I'm not sure who else will read this comment since this video is two years old but I hope it helps!
    *TL:DR*: The criticism of the game's combat is valid but most of the other points rely too heavily on comparing it with the old GOW games. Many of the game's issues involving platforming and combat looping are to be expected since the developers decided on such a drastic change to the game's focus. These things will hopefully be improved upon in later games.

    16:35 I just wanna point out that this specific game design flaw is what breaks the final boss fight with Baldur. Baldur is a multi-phase boss fight instead of being just one phase like all the other bosses are. This game design flaw allows you to go into the next phase with low health, die immediately, and respawn with full HP back at the beginning of the new phase you just entered instead of at the beginning of phase 1.
    It's how I beat Baldur on Give me a Challenge and it made the entire fight very underwhelming and didn't felt earned. I hope this is something that is fixed in GoW Ragnarok *at the very least* because this is a game design sin, period.

      if it helps, knowing that people will disagree with you at the end makes it much easier for me to say something on the internet. there will be a person out there who will disagree, and when it comes to discussing something on the internet, a person who tries to bash someone who they disagree with is not worth the attention, because nothing will come out of that exchange. be nice about it, be understanding about the people who have different opinions, and never get down to the level of name-calling. This video is an excellent example of that, mayo said time and time again that the game had good aspects, graphics, story, characters, and such. letting the other side know you understand them is going to make sure they are much likely to listen and respect you.
      one more thing, the purpose of an argument is not to be right, but to get it right. if there is one thing I see in the world that I hate, its how being wrong is considered a bad thing. being able to say "you know what, you're right" is not easy, but I personally want to get to that level. being wrong is not wrong, shaming the people who are wrong is wrong, and anyone who says condescending things about you not being right is one of the times I would say they're being objectively dumb, because being admitting that you're wrong means that you are looking to know and understand, and holding you back from doing that is something I would never understand myself

Most of the enemies encountered in the game is a fire zombie, ice zombie or a poison zombie with knife, hammer and spellcaster variants. They seem varied enough at first, but very quickly get boring. In late game, the fire zombies get a little buff, but the buff is more irritating than interesting, and it doesn't really change the way I engage with them much. This is why I enjoyed fighting the dark elves more, they were way different from the other zombie variants and I had to actually start to change how I engage opponents and adapt to beat them. I want more enemy variety, more enemies that make me think instead of mashing buttons, rolling out and spamming runic attacks until they die. I want less trolls and ogres, more creative bosses like the Valkyries, Baldur and the dragon.

    hey, i just wanted to point some stuff out as someone who recently replayed GOW4, now i dont want an argument and sorry if i come out as someone who does.
    i do believe the puzzles and exploring have been downgraded, and that not being able to jump has effected the combat poorly aswell.
    and i do agree that theres plenty of moves in both games that fit in the "practical benefit" section.
    i dont nessecaraly agree that theres no big picture benefit in GOW4 however. theres the obvius example of permafrost and what ever the blade upgrade is called (sorry i dont remember the name), which if you get hit instantly removes it. but theres also the depth of the enhancments. for example, for of them is "if kratos gets hit, theres a small perk chance of slowing down your enemys" or something like that. which, while also fits into the "practical benefit" section of being HUGE risk HUGE reward since you're required to get hit, i believe its also beneficial is ome ways to the "big picture benefit" in a situation of: "should i risk getting hit by this small unit that does low dmg to have a chance of slowing down time so that i can use my runin attack on this traveler (since he cant be staggered), or should i save my health incase ill need it since i dont believe i can beat this mini boss without it?". I may be wrong on this one, but i believe you get more xp for upgrades if you preform better. for example, i remember while playing threw the game first time around i only got around 50 to 125 xp per fight, but one the second one i got around 200 to 250 xp. now, that is an incredible small diffrence if it is and i think the reward gain on playing better should be increased in GOW ragnorok, its still there.
    on the smaller note, if you do better you get more lines between atreus and kratos.
    there are upgrades the gameplay (mostly the 3 terms youve menshioned) can be upgraded. and i believe its the jump botton. but i believe santa monica has, and let me qoute a youtuber that made a 3 hour review of the game: "struck gold, and if they dig a little bit further theyll hit platinum".

      Usually the intention of having taking damage effects is to offset the negative consequences of being hit since being hit is almost always bad in any game. I highly doubt the developer was wanting you to strategically plan taking damage for a chance at slows when other things in the game slow. That's the only part where you're probably wrong.

      What I find rather annoying is that most modern gamers seem to be fine with an unnecessary RPG aspect that doesn't grant new tools that can further be used to optimize and further specialise in different playstyles with their respective challenges shifting with them. Dark souls is a game of this nature (though it could be argued about how the game favours ranged weapons over melee ones being a thing) , god of war shouldn't be like the boring and brainless RPGs where there is always a highly effective strategy that turned out to be painfully tedious and serves to only test one's patience, in essence this ends up a big waste of the player's time.

    Unfortunately there's a prevailing wind in gaming now to make games have the same public respect movies have, even though most modern movies are dumber than they ever have been before, but i digress. The problem is that at least in my opinion, games and movies are diametrically opposed mediums. One has the goal of being an interactive experience and one is a passive experience. I don't know why they're trying to blend the two? I would say its impossible. A game can have cinematic elements to great effect, but you can't make a game that's only cinematic elements at the complete cost of meaningful interaction. I mean i guess you can, but we get to the point where i ask why don't you just make an animated feature? I ask anyone that somehow likes david cage "games" as games (beyond two souls, heavy rain, Detroit become human) or telltale games. What is added to the experience by making you press a button to open a cabinet or progress dialogue, that would be lost if it was purely a movie? To me this is like writing a book, but folding all the pages into funny shapes forcing me to unfold them so i can get on with the story.

    Totally agree with all of this. It feels to me like it was designed as a fancy walking simulator and they decided at the last minute to add in some combat. You just walk through empty areas listening to "story", until your reach an obvious clearing. In spawn dozens of the same damn enemies again and again, which you MUST kill to move on through another empty area and more "story". There seems to be no option to run away from fights or sneak your way past enemies - it's just "here's a room of baddies. Kill everyone to continue". To me this makes the world feel completely artificial and un-lived-in. Combat feels bloated and yet somehow insufficient at the same time, and I can't actually believe that they opted for that disgusting off-screen attack prompt system rather than just zooming the camera back during combat. You would love DMC. The game doesn't have a combo counter, it has a style meter- instead of rewarding you based on the number of individual hits, it rewards you for things like using a wide variety of attacks, hitting multiple foes with one attack, dodging properly, parrying properly, etc. This naturally encourages you to experiment and discover all the applications of your whole arsenal, because the higher your style rank, the more orbs enemies drop on death, and the more orbs you'll be rewarded with at the end of a mission. The combo also doesn't fully drop if you wait too long, your style rank just starts falling- which is good because it doesn't badly punish the player for backing off when there clearly isn't a safe opening to attack.

    I went into this video expecting to disagree with you, not because I like the new GoW, but simply because I assumed your expectations would be coming from an angle the devs weren't concerned with. But I really agree with everything you've said here, you make your point well and I think you're correct- particularly on how they've left it so the only part remaining that isn't for "Story" players is the combat, which is a shame.

    Mayo, you NEED to play the Devil May Cry series, those games are the father of the Hack 'n' Slash genre, and to this day still hold the gold standard for them. Onimusha is sort of the mother/proto hack 'n' slash that Hideki Kamiya based DMC off of due to a glitch he encountered playtesting, wanna know the glitch? JUGGLING.

    The health and magic management system (in the older games) made a lot of my encounters tense and fun. Alongside with the addition of health/magic chests around the game, and only giving you one of said chest made it even better. If you managed your resources right and were good on health, then you'd have free magic recovery for the next section. If you played too rough and forgot to use your magic, or kept it strategically, then you'd have a free health recovery. It wasn't how it'd go most times tho, as combat would leave you half empty or barely filled in magic and health, so you either took the safe route of picking health, dodging and doing safe combos, or went ballsy and filled your magic bar in hope you could kill your enemies easily. ALSO, since killing enemies with the QTEs rewarded you health or magic, taking the dangerous route was viable. Being a glass cannon for the start of the fight until you get some health back was doable, potentially giving you more red orbs most of the times as well.

    • @YEY0806
      @YEY0806 Год назад

      It's made more important by the fact that chests give less orbs on higher difficulties, so there is even greater incentive to play smart.

    Let's be honest. This game is the "The Last of Us: North Mythology Edition (featuring Kratos from God of War)"
    I loved the older games and played through them many times. Making my way from the lowest to the highest difficultys, as I got better.
    In GoW2018, once you know the story, there is no reason to ever play it again.
    They took the game out of Videogame and made it a boring interactive video.
    The combat of GoW 2018 was fun in the beginning but got boring fast. As soon as Kratos got his Blades back, things started to feel very wrong.
    The Blades of Chaos and there different incarnations, were perfect to control the Arena.
    The changed camera perspective and limited view, completely negates that advantage making them little more then fan service.
    (At least they got us a Variation on the "Spot point an throw weapon at it" puzzles by having to combine to points and adding a timer)
    Kratos moving outright slugisch at times does not help either. I know he is supposed to be older but come on. He uses trees like Baseball bats and can litterally flip entire rooms upside down.
    Not to mention move entire tempels without, as he puts it, "having trouble with his back".

    I definitely got bummed out when I realized Kratos could not jump. That was my favorite way to fight in the original trilogy. I would always find some way to fight in the air.
    I like RPGs. Something about meticulously choosing armor and weapons to have the perfect setup before combat is oddly satisfying to me. But even I have to admit that sometimes it crossed a line into frustration, since few enemies had many extreme weaknesses or strengths to justify me sitting there for 5 minutes picking out specific armor for them. After a while, I just learned to stick with armor that gave the most health and general damage reduction. I would much prefer a progression system that rewarded riskier play styles, rather than walking around trying to open hundreds of chests.

    • @LusciousTwinkle
      @LusciousTwinkle Год назад +3

      IKR? HOLD that triangle!! RPGs have their place but GOW was specifically a pared down game so you could concentrate on the combat. and if there is a gold ticket anyway, what the point. All those stats work better with ongoing online games imo.

    • @YEY0806
      @YEY0806 Год назад

      @Lola Twinkle Also, it goes against the character design because the devs for the first GOW game realised that giving their protagonist more armour only robbed him of personality, so they stripped the armour off and the result?
      One of the most recognisable, unique, coolest, intense characters to ever grace video games. Even if people never played GOW, they will still recognise Kratos.

    There many things to appreciate about this game. This game (as well as Doom) is a pure representation on why sentiments such as "Gamer's don't like single player games anymore. They want more multiplayer live service games" needs to f*ck off.
    I will say that your case is rock solid. In the eyes of average gamer's especially those who haven't played the previous games. Its a great games. Probably because they were more or less were hungry for quality game at the time given how many trash tier games they were getting from greedy anti-consumer publisher like EA and Activision.
    But in the eyes of hardcore veterans especially those who did experienced the OG God of War see this God of War as a big downgrade compared to its predecessors. Gameplay speaking. And they would be right. Although i never played any of the God of War but from watching the gameplay i definitely can say that God of War 2018 is less awesome than its predecessors. (gameplay speaking)
    One thing that developers needs to understand is that God of War is not the Last of Us, its not Heavy Rain and its not Detroit Become Human. Honestly i do have worries about the following sequels of God of War 2018. I worry that they could end up screwing up big time the next time. I also worry that sequels could be canceled and i hate the stories that doesn't have proper conclusions.
    We have to hope for the best but you also should expect the worst. In fact, here is a quote from Kratos himself. "Keep your expectations low, boy, and you will never be disappointed." While it may not be the best quote but it tell that it would be wise to keep your expectations in check.
