I have been swimming for 13 yrs, started at 204 lbs 5’8” medium build, stopped running after an ACL as meniscus showed signs of wearing. Skip to 2020 at 69 weight 158-160. Best shape of my life as I do a non stop 1 km swim, flip kicking all turns with an average time of 23 mins . The endorphin high associated with a swim is without the pain experienced in weight bearing as a runner for years. And something no one talks about is the beautiful stretch, the added left/ right abdominal workout of free style with bilateral breathing with the persistence for a non-stop period. I don’t believe that Running compares with Swimming as swimming is far superior as overall body and breathing total exercise, when you add non stop minimal distance

You normally swim all the races above 2 time's if you make the final that is lol
Think that's how runner's do it also from what I can remember.
Then you have the team event's of 4 swimmers.
      200 free so 50 each
      200 IM 50 each
That was LCm And there is SCm so 25m pool instead of a 50m pool
Enless you America then they have yards as well so 25yard pool qnd 50yard pool heard them talk about 500yard swimming race's but there the only one's as far as I know that do yards.

As a life long swimmer turned triathlete I find burn more calories running for an hour than swimming for an hour, but 16 years of competitive swimming has helped me become an efficient swimmer and expend less energy. I think there are too many variables to really come to a conclusion here.

Running probably burns more calories in the exercise, but I believe swimming recovery burns more due to swimming using your whole body. Also water temperature plays a role, as well as breathing. Open air breathing is much easier than water breathing due to complexity and technique of good breathing whilst in the water. I also prefer the look of a swimmers body.
I love both exercises - so no hate

You use your entire body while running, and while swimming you're not having to support any of your own weight like you would running because the buoyancy from water is lifting you up, so running overall is still requiring more of your overall system. The only reason you feel like you're more drained is because of the cold water sucking the heat out of your body but that still doesn't match the calories burned while running.

I like swimming as it exercises all your muscles evenly (doing all four strokes), it is not weight bearing and it gives you the best body physique (just perfect). In the long run, swimming is not bad for your knees as opposed to running, though some people may disagree (by pointing out the correct running technique). I’ve known orthopaedic consultant surgeons who does TKR (Total Knee Replacement) and they wouldn’t recommend running as part of your daily exercise routine.

You forgot the recovery time. You still burn calories during your body recovers. Swimming does that more than running. So at the end Swimming with more upper, middle core and lower body movements burns calories. Jeez really calorie watches nah... not really an exact Science. I'd say the test is not accurate swimming Burns more for me a lot more if you compared a swimmer to a runner at the same level of competition so Olympic down to local club you should find swimming burn a lot more calories, however that's my opinion.

  • @joemoya9743
    @joemoya9743 4 года назад +23

There isn't a consideration of calories burned from dramatic increases in body temperature POST swim. In water your core temperature stays cooler... therefore, a significant amount of calories are burned when you leave the cooler water. This is called a body temperature spike. This spike does not occur while running. And, this body temperature spike also explains hunger from post swimming work outs.

  • @OvidiuHretcanu
    @OvidiuHretcanu 4 года назад +104

9:54 I don't know if you are considering (or event be able to estimate for) the fact that in water your body needs to compensate more for the temperature difference - the air is a better insulator, while the water is not and on top of it it touches the skin directly. I recon a lot of calories will be burned just to maintain the body temperature. This would be enough anyway to top the results from running. You cannot argue with the hungry sensation after swimming...

Dude this video was very unfair to the people that take swimming seriously which i feel isnt ok like me i do about a 2hour 30m swim when i get back from school swimmming is and its a fact way harder than running nd if really if you would put the same amount of effort into. Swimmming as you do running ti would be about 4 times harder and yes you do burn more calories doing other strokes which is also unfair they should’ve did one that uses for muscles then the front crawl and in breaststroke which is made more as a not streamlined swim where as front crawl is the easiest and most efficient way of swimming for example butterfly uses more energy force and muscles which you could easily burn over 2000 calories in a 2 hour time frame even with a 2 minute interval (if you need to take that much rest or barely make the interval it means yo should probs switch to a different stroke but still) and in the 2 minute interval do a 50 yard and or meter fly swim. They also did not include all the other strokes and things that could have put the calories burn to the absolute max and we could see and know how running and swimming are different an like a said they should do another video on this showing the other strokes..... sorry i needed to copy this and it was by the send button

So. I’m a swimmer and a xc/track runner. Bother at every difficult when done competitively. Both are very mental. But swimming is more about how little drag you can have and then being able to have a high vo2 max as to use your oxygen most efficiently. But with running it also involves its own form that has to be done well to avoid injury. And it works your legs more(obviously) and core, but it is all about controlling breathing and heart rate. Which also plays a role into vo2 max. So basically. I still can’t tell which is harder in paper. But if my opinion makes any difference. I find running to be harder/ more physically challenging as when I’m mid track or xc season I feel better and feel like my body looks better than during swim season. And another thing that might not matter but might as well add it. During a running season my resting heart rate sits around 41 but during swim season I’m usually around 49-51. So not sure if that matters too much, but it’s worth mentioning. Sorry for my paragraph. But that’s just my random thoughts on it

Butterfly consumes considerably more but, unless you are Michael Phelps, you can't do butterfly for an hour....Kicking only contributes about 5%. That is why distance freestylers hardly kick at all.

I used to run years ago and did lose weight but ended up with a long term sciatica injury but maybe the impact of running caused that. I have started swimming again and it's good to know that calories burnt are kind of on par to running. I am finding results are better when I swim first thing in the morning on an empty stomach

Another tough aspect to consider in calculations of caloric expenditure is the increase in metabolic factors post-workout. This is also why strength training doesn't have a very high immediate caloric output, but does deplete you energetically, as well as create a sustained caloric/metabolic output for the rest of the day.

Getting out of a hard swim practice absolutely hurts my arms, core, legs more than I can imagine, I can happily go home and eat a 1000+ calorie meal and feel no effects whatsoever, I’m not a big person either I have a six pack. However when I used to run I couldn’t seem to burn off calories and my appetite wasn’t that big at all and I ran a lot. Idk but in my opinion swimming burns a lot more. Sorry runners but if you’ve ever survived a swim practice you’ll know what I mean!

As a coach it's true you spend a few more calories keeping your body warm from cold water .however
If you swim in cold water all the time your body adjusts itself on a body fat level to insulate the muscles from the cold ......so
You will keep a few more percent of body fat in cold Water than warm
Elite athletes at world level swimmers have approx 3to 5percent more body fat than track and field athletes for the reason you are getting in and out of the water with just your swimmers on....year after year of training you will have more body fat than the runner
When you see say 100 Meter runners bodies they look like body builders highly defined veins and muscles sticking out to see
Compare the elite 100meter swimmers ......you see great physical bodies but Not veins and defined muscle fibres like the runners.........

      1) lose means to lose, loose means to loose. Google the difference. You can’t loose calories. You can loosen a screw.

Yes, on paper it seems running burns more. However, I remember some sports medicine doctor saying that the reason people feel very hungry after swimming is because we don't take into consideration the dissipation of energy our body goes through for having to keep the body at a certain temperature due to the water temperature. So you're actually burning more calories simply by standing in a pool of water and your body trying to regulate itself. Something along those lines. So you might actually burn the same, if not more than running.

So I burn almost the same in both sports, but a bit more in the running :) I'm mainly a swimmer, bit chubby, but also lots of muscles, 29 years old female ;) I used my Polar V800 :) I found the running heavier than the swimming, but might be because I've been running once each week while swimming 4 times each week :)

The reason I'm a bit chibby is not because of my current diet, but my past 😉 I was in an abusive relationship for 4.5 years where I quit all forms of exercise and just ate my feelings and had a bad depression. I gained 20 kg those years, and after starting to swim (2.5 years now) I've lost 11 kg (while building muscle, so according to bodyscan I've lost more than 11 kg of fat mass). I consume about 2500 kcal a day and I'm not on a diet, just eat healthy 👍 I don't enjoy the taste of salt so no worries about crisps 😅

It all depends on how much you do and how long you do it and the temp of the water (for swimming)
In this case I think it depends. With swimming it’s quite possible to burn more depending on stroke and even time intervals. I think swimming burns more than running but it also could depend on what level you are on in each sport.
Either way I’ve done both sports and can say that I am always hungry after a swim and thirsty only after a run. I did cross country and swimming through grade school and high school level but it depends on you and what level you are on.

Do you take into account the muscle you build from the water resistance. Which provides a longer burn.

How about dopamine?? Personally, Swimming would overtake any sports .

I started swimming and i love it. The treadmill becomes boring after a while, plus it's harder on my joints.

I go for a run early every morning (about 5am). Then go for a swim at 7am. I get every thing I need to do done for that day. Then finish the day with 200 sit ups, 100 push ups and as many pull ups as i can handle (normally around 50).
I also take dance classes most days as well as being on my schools netball team.
    I'm 15.

you can swim in the ocean, a lake, a river, or a gravel pit.
