You missed a huge part of the cutter personality. He's a chameleon. In one scene he was lying that he was lying. He's not a killer as he said. But he learnt and survived on the down low. Favorite movie this year so far.
I wasn't going to buy the ending until the very final reveal... and then it all kinda made sense. He was not the guy we thought he was. There's often more to people than what they let on. I even assumed the guy was innocent. He played it well.
Yup, it was a very nice surprise. If you're interested, please check out my interview with the writer / director Graham Moore. ruclips.net/video/9eLbRSAia5k/видео.html
I had the same feeling. First thought I had right when the movie ended was, “this movie would have been perfect without that last weird action sequence.”
I thought it was a perfect ending. Just because he was a seasoned killer doesn’t mean he would not get scared. He is perfectly aware of what could happen if things go wrong. The whole point of the film is that he is not what he seems. He is a bit like the title character in the old Columbo series. He lulls everyone into a false sense of security by appearing naive and dumb, but is actually very calculating. He doesn’t make a mistake until the final scene. I loved the dialogue which was straight out of a 1940’s gangster movie. The fact that it was all set in one location added to the tension and claustrophobia. Yes, it could be turned into a play.
The secretary was not trying to learn the cutter craft and take over the business. She hated it and wanted to something else in life. That’s why she didn’t care how she folded the handkerchief squares.
He was the master mind and fed the bunch all the paranoia and it made sense how he could predict their behavior. The ending made it all make sense , only a gangster would know how to deal with gangsters .
I thought hard about what you said about the ending, and have to disagree with your feeling of it being a mischaracterization of the Cutter. Anyone who's lived that life as he explained he had in the end would appear weak so not to be considered a threat. It's brilliant actually.
Agreed. His internal monologue contains a story about a customer who came in wanting his coat sleeves altered. The Cutter says the trouble is with the coat shoulders. The customer insists it's the sleeves. The Cutter says ok, but alters the shoulders not the sleeves, and doesn't tell the customer. The customer says it's perfect. This sets up how his mind works very well.
I think the ending was fine. What's another twist gonna do to this already good movie. But something stuck to me. Francis wanted to hear what was on the tape before Boss Boyle's arrival. Richie insisted they wait, which eventually got him killed. What did Francis think was on that tape that made him want to know what was on it first than anyone else, or something he didn't want the boss to hear, or made him kill the boss' son for? He was a loyal goon and never thought about wanting to take over the organization, except during the coercion by Leonard.
The Doyle explanation would be that it’s a red herring. The Watson explanation would be that Francis wanted to take the credit, or that he was simply impatient, or that he didn’t trust Ritchie and wanted to hear it for himself first. It doesn’t make too much sense but considering they a contrarians, I didn’t doubt it after the fact.
One of the few best films of this month. Very well written, flushed characters and near perfect dialogue. We need more of these films. It’s a breakthrough from all this lame disney franchises for once.
I think the movie would have been even better if, in the end, Francis survived and became the apprentice of the tailor. Everything was set up from the beginning for that to happen, and it just didn't happen. I'm pretty sure showing compassion instead of killing him would have been the perfect closure of this cycle of violence
The only problem I have with that is the mob wouldn’t just let anyone walk away, they’re a curse, whoever they use, is dying when their done with what they need, so I don’t think Francis would’ve let him go
@@cbeckwith172 There was nothing attaching him to the mob in the end. He could have passed for dead and gone, along with the boss. Nobody would have looked for him.
Spoiler talk… I thought the twist ending worked. And the complaint you had about his reaction is all an act - I think; he did not want to show his hand at that point. I like the reveal that he was one of them when he was young, but I just wish he was more bad ass like “John Wick” or Nikolai from Eastern Promise considering he was fight someone who’s been shot. But he might be rusty? I don’t think he had any reservations about killing him.
He was timid, because he knew he couldn't take on a mob. He knew how dangerous these people are. The ending fits, because the mob was gone. He was cornered and had to defend himself. Mobsters are actually very careful people, which the cutter was. Mobsters only kill when they have the police paid off and the alibi in place. The only problem I have is that the tape recorder was place behind the radiator in a Chicago winter. The tape recorder would have melted. Also in the beginning, the cutter said he came to Chicago with only his scissors, and meet Boyle. Then Boyle set him up on business. But in the end, he said that Boyle walked into his shop.
United Nations of Crime and the underworld killed her Father using Boyle. A "Cutter" vs tailor means a professional killer with a particular set of skills in the war and underworld. Have you ever said something you didn't really mean? Perfect ending scrapping another Brush with the Outfit. After your first outfit, first kill, or shop fire it gets easier. Perfect ending.
@@WatchorPass , what I saying is you can find a stock photo of the actor from the internet or just do a screen capture from the trailer... I did that for my review of THE LAST DUEL... no one came after me for copyright....

Absolutely agreed!! Such a good movie. I reviewed the movie as well on my channel if you want to check that out my friend?
The "cutter" was a killer. He did bad things on the past. His use of the scissors and the showing his tattoos proved that.

The movie did such a great job keeping us guessing right?
I didn’t have high expectations at first but the last half of the movie had me in suspense. What a great hidden gem.

Thank you for the summary and analysis of the movie. Very enjoyable!
Are you a big fan of that suspense thriller kind of genre?
This is a perfect mix of Reservoir Dogs and Rope.

The issue with me as he lost his shop and did *NOT take any of the money.
Not likely from a former gangster.
Good point, though I took that as the symbolism of him starting off again with nothing. But yes, perhaps he should have taken some money with him!
Probaly has more cash stashed somewhere lol

Too many things had to got unrealistically perfect for the Cutter to mastermind all these outrageousness.
Looking sharp!
So the cutter was a trained assassin?
I thought we would find out he was really her daddy 🤣
You could have fetched a photo of the actor who played Boyle.
I used the images that were made available from the press site. There were only a few and an image of that character was not included at the time.

Should make a follow up movie where he goes back and gets revenge on his wife's killers.
Makes no sense to do that. What he wants is to move on from this life.
