Without a doubt. For a 5 or 6 stretch he was arguably the best player in baseball. Look at the back of his baseball card and you'll see 162 gms, 162 gms, etc.. His numbers were comparable to Jim Rice IMO. I could go on about Murph. He played on some BAD Braves teams too.
As a kid who had cable….I was such a Braves fan given we really only saw them on TBS and Chicago on WGN. I remember Dale’s sweet swing… Probably my first childhood sports memory. That and Andre Dawson’s swing when he played for the Cubs. Damn it’s fun to search RUclips for these old highlights
Same here, and we aren't alone. I'd wager the real reason viewership has tanked over the past 10-20 years is because so few players, and almost none of the stars, are relatable anymore.
@@bradleysanford7929 you mean like Roger Maris, who also won multiple WS titles, AND back to back MVPs? MVP awards alone don't make the case. I'm a Braves fan telling you this...his numbers just aren't there.
Back then it was a big deal when a power hit a homerun to the opposite field... And I remember that is what made Dale Murphy so special... That he can do that... These days, small little utility infielders are regularly hitting bombs to the opposite field. Everybody is!!!!
Don't be fooled those utility infielders are benefiting tremendously from a combination of the juiced ball, tiny parks and absolute crap pitching. Time machine those utility infielders back to 85 and most don't crack double figures in homers for a season plus they would strike out at an even more alarming rate than they do today.
They won that game 3-0, Steve Bedrosian, Jeff Dedmon and Bruce Sutter combined for the shutout. Bedrosian allowed six hits and walked six guys and yet he somehow escaped with no runs scored.
I'm 53. Since I'm old school I personally believe all new football stadiums should be baseball ready should it be needed and all football stadiums should be baseball ready should it be needed
They were a lot of punks then but they got sent down back or traded. Unless you were a legacy player. When expansion came, they had to keep those players for a year or two maybe three.
I never understood why he is not in the hall of fame. One time they stole the mvp from him and gave it to Ryne Sandberg. Sandburg did have an excellent first half, but altogether Murphy had better numbers. I think it was 1984
5 consecutive gold gloves. The year they stole the MVP 1984, it would have been his 3rd consecutive a record. The guy that beat him hit Just above 300 I think 311, and had 19 home runs Ryne sandberg. If I remember correctly Murphy hit 304 36 home runs more than 100 rbi, more than 20 stolen bases, and he won the gold glove in his position that year.
Murphy was one of the best opposite field power hitters of the time.
Amen.
Dale Murphy should be in the HOF
He should be in the HOF!!!!!
Fred Mcgriff had more hr and better average and is not in the hof
@@jch8376 Fred got two NL MVPs? I'll wait while you look it up.

I've been screaming about that for years. Him, and Vida Blue and Steve Garvey. And this is coming from a life long Giants fan.
Murphy was a beast in the '80s.

Despite all the losing they had to endure I loved this Braves team
Dale murphy deserves the hall of fame at coopers town love the murph he was 👍
Definitely, but considering his numbers weren't there, it's no wonder, even being a 2-time MVP award winner doesn't merit much
my childhood hero....thx Murph
Mine as well! In Red Sox country!
I miss when most baseball players looked like Murphy. Normal. Just a bat. No armor chains tattoos maybe a glove no custom cleats
Same here, and we aren't alone. I'd wager the real reason viewership has tanked over the past 10-20 years is because so few players, and almost none of the stars, are relatable anymore.
Everyone liked him because him, Ric Flair and Tom & Jerry were the stars of TBS
probably the only player post 1970, that you can honestly say with any certainty never juiced. and that fact should get him HOF admittance.
Murph has got to make it. Think about how great his HOF speech would be? Such an earnest dude.
@@joeydbball1729 Murphy will be in the HOF soon~ His cards and memorabilia are still selling really well~
Seriously? The ONLY player? And how can you say it with certainty? But I get it, I liked Dale Murphy also.
Cecil Fielder
Harry Carey, Steve Stone? Legends as well
Sweetest swing of all time
I miss watching the Braves on TBS.
Me too, but this broadcast was WGN. That's Haray Carey and Steve Stone announcing.
Hall of Fame!~ Hall of Fame!~ Hall of Fame!~
Always loved his power to the opposite field
These were my two favorite teams, back in the day………. So great we can magically return to yesteryear!
I still can't believe he's not in the HOF. Ted Simmons is in the hof it's beyond ridiculous!
@@boxychubbo6922 Yeah right, no room in there for a 2 time MVP.
Harold Baines is worse. His election has taken all credibility from the Hall.
STRONGLY agree that Dale should be in HOF.. However, Simmons belongs too...

As a 55 yr old, I agree.
two of my favorites, love both Murph and Sut
murphy mastered the art of the opposite field home run. 6'4 215 he made going opposite field look easy!
I'm amazed at how much shorter the swing is today to get a check swing strike called compared to 30 years ago
he is the reason i am a braves fan today
Murphy would have put up better numbers if he Bob Horner stayed healthy
No Horner and teams just pitched around Murphy.
Murph looks like a pitcher when he stands at the plate.
Did they not call balks back in 85? I counted at least 5 balks by Sutcliffe.
Go Murph!
Back when they acted like men and just trotted around the bases with their head down.
Okay boomer.

Because if you flaunted you would get you teeth knocked in and everyone would understand why. Actually had to have some self-control back then.
@@nalgene247there were so many fights then. The Mets and Cards were in them not to mention the Dodgers and Giants.
