    I've known a lot of stubborn devs that never change anything because they have the mentality of "I've never had that problem/I think it's fine."
    Especially if you ever want to make money off game dev, you NEED to leave behind any ego you may have and try to rationalize anything you hear.
    I've totally had times where someone would say something, and while I'd think it's fine I'd change something anyway, and I've been glad I did every time.

  • @TimConceivable

    i'd definitely be interested in seeing you revisit older jam games and improve upon them. either just fixing level design, mechanics, or even redoing some art or giving it a full make-over. all of that would be really cool. "Oh Rats!" especially seems like one that is worthy of polishing up a bit more, and you could redo the art to make it more attractive while you're fixing the level design and stuff. Cross the Gap is perfect though. i'm pretty sure you don't need to touch that one unless you just want to add more levels to it. :)

    A great addition to this would be to make it where you use the coins to activate the checkpoints and have to have collected x amount to proceed to the next level. That would incentives players to try to get more.

  • @vinsplayer2634

    I think you should make a little update, where you change the hitboxes a bit and keep the stamina bar, BUT make it so that if you are midair from a jump while the stamina bar runs out, it doesn't slow you, and also so that running is impossible to start mid-air. Oh and also make a larger stamina bar. And if you have time you could make more levels. The ones you already made could be the last 8 levels.

  • @neipo
    @neipo 2 года назад +1

    I think we need a design term for avoiding things that frustrate the player and make them feel like it's not their fault they failed at a challenge. Difficulty is not the right word and its not always just clunkiness with hitboxes and the like. I have been using "friendliness" though its a bit scuffed as well. A game like Celeste is very difficult but it's "friendly". It has coyote time, jump buffering, whatever you call the thing where it helps you around a ledge above that you just barely bump into, good hitboxes, fast respawns, no music cuts on death, and all these little minor helpers to give the player the benefit of the doubt and make the experience as seamless as possible and yet it still manages to be quite difficult.
    I think friendliness is a flawed term as well but maybe you have a better idea on what to call it.

    I'm not good with words, but I can definitely reinforce a yes to this idea for videos. I honestly don't know how to word this so I'll just say that I personally think this fits right into what you do with your games and in your community. I'd really love to see you go back and look a little more into past games you've made to help encourage the idea of going back to see what works and what doesn't and learning from it instead of just one and done, move on to the next thing. It doesn't have to be a consistent thing, but every now and then it would be really nice to see.
    When you mainly see one side of game dev (namely the project after project and constant progress forward) it can sometimes seem like you're just supposed to know what you're doing at all times and you can't stop to re-evaluate your past projects because you just don't have time to. Having videos like this can help people learn or remember to take a minute and reflect or just take it easy on themselves and slow down a little. There's a lot to be learned from your past projects even way down the line when you think you've already learned all you can while you were making the thing.
    I dunno, maybe I'm just projecting my own feelings on people. It's very possible. Still gonna be pushing for this content to be made, though. I want it so bad. Please, I'll pay if I have to (And yes, please do little cut ups of the Feedback Fridays. I don't care if it's once a year, I want it. My memory sucks and I find it to be a crime when I forget some of the cool things people are making. Also, lots of knowledge to be gained from those streams)
    Brick done. Bye now

    It would be really interesting if you made a renovation video where you create yourself a punch list of things to improve, then sit down and make the changes and show the bits of code that implement the fix. I think it would be interesting to see an updated version of the game you critique. You've grown a lot from when you did these. Even if you were given the same time constraint I think you'd be able to give a much more polished video. I don't know if this would work as well on this channel, but I have seen some game reformatting videos recently. Perhaps something similar could work here?

    Honestly there's a lot that i like about Oh! Rats! The esthetics of the game and how you executed on the top down was really good, i very much like the multiple levels going up and the jump mechanics between them, the only thing that I'd say that'd fix it real quick is just adding a dash maybe like Mega Man X where the velocity is kept after you jump even if it runs out, add a little bit of polish after that and i think this'd be a really fun game :)

  • @sodakuwun0707
    @sodakuwun0707 2 года назад

    tbh i was already wanting you to try and remake this game before you said it. you dont need to, but i think itd be a fun video!
    also, your video about how to start making games prompted me to download godot and make pong:) it was really fun, though i got one symbol wrong and spent an hour looking for it lol. either way, i was really happy with the outcome! it plays nicely and since i also like to draw, i believe it was aesthetically pleasing

    Finished the game 15 min into the video with 460 coins(I think it's all of them?). Wasn't too bad, the platform edges are of course screwed up, but the jump time in the air is enough to compensate for it, so wasn't much trouble. Had one peculiar glitch char would go inside the platform and collect coins above while being underneath.
    Oh about the dash bar... I think it has a place in this game, I enjoyed timing sequences.
    I would make it regenerate faster though. Something like feathers in A Short Hike... you get your sequence limit but it's quick to regen for another sequence of action.
    Another thing to consider: when making keyboard controls - most keyboards have keys groupped physically(hardware) and keys may not be pressed simultaneously. For example it's typical for arrow keys and space key to have mutual interference...
    P.S. on the last level you don't have to walk across the edge, you can just jump and move with quick stops when a rat moves away. That's how I did it, before I even saw how you were doing it.

  • @timothymclean

    Re: Difficulty: When I was making my game for the VimJam, if I was having any trouble making a jump or anything, I tweaked it until I could get through that section of the game effortlessly. That seems like a decent place to start. (Figuring out what to do was harder than it should have been, because I couldn't find anyone willing and able to play my game ahead of time, but getting through was easy enough if they figured that out.)

    I would really like to see you revising and fixing your old games. As a challenge I would add a timer ( 2 hours?) to see how much you have grown since and keep the game jam spirit. Would you think that you could improve the game within that time? That way you also practise to prioritize a bit and really think about what need to be improved first and what actually doesnt need to be improved.

    I just finished the game in like 15 minutes while collecting all 460 coins and I didn't feel like there was any problems with the hitboxes or dashing. The level design wasn't bad either, I actually thought the level design was good. If there was any problem with the game it was that you kinda not being able to control your character when in air. I thought it was a great game for such a small time period

    Hit boxes aside, never make jumps that require 100% of your jump power (except maybe for like secrets and stuff). Instead, to add difficulty, look at Super Mario Brothers, they'll have short jumps but like bullet bills and winged turtles flying at you. Make it more about player agility and creativity; give them a choice of how they can tackle the problem. With a 100% jump there's only one way to do it and it's not giving the players a chance to be creative.

    You've always stated you don't like the idea of revisiting games from old Jams so maybe not redoing an older game. But I'd love to see you improve them in some way. Maybe make a new game improving off 2 or 3 concepts you think could have been polished in older games. Maybe allowing yourself to reuse some code and art to make it easier on yourself. A game jam made only using concepts from your older games? I'm sure you'll find some idea that interests you. Just noting my interest in seeing the content 😀.

I know that using one game per video is tempting for making more content but then it becomes an issue of quality vs quantity. With all that said, I do wish you would continue this series. It is beneficial for you and also us to discover these little mistakes that ruin our games. Also, please don't shy away from your good games.
