I remember having the iPhone 4 and finding this album in my music, while scrolling a disconnected phone on my way to school. Glad I didn't need internet access to listen to it, because a huge majority of the songs on this album I would listen to before school everyday. Just so happened to be my final year of high school too, good memories.
Incredible, it was also my last highschool year when this thing landed on my iphone 5. I actually really liked it and it became my school home commute music while on the school bus!
Personally I never would have bought the album but I've enjoyed it a lot. I get it, people don't want it on their itunes, some people even had trouble removing it, not ideal. But honestly if your biggest problem is having someone give you an album you don't want, that's a nice life.
for all the people who are saying it is ungrateful, I just wanna say one thing. It's one thing to offer it for free, though everyone might not like your product, but it's another thing to force it on a users phone or device with no ability to remove it
I have just bought a new Honda CRV and it starts playing a random song from my iTunes library when I walk up to it. My iTunes library consists of only this album and so a song from this album starts playing every time I get into the car. I like this album.
It's a free album one of the greatest bands of this generation spent four years writing. Don't like it? Then delete it, but recognise the generosity, at least on Apple's part, if not U2
To be honest, I'm not a big U2 fan, and I certainly do not think this new album has anything on the 80s and 90s stuff they did. BUT, why are people complaining? It's still quality music. You're getting a whole album written, performed and recorded by one of the foremost bands of the last thirty years, and by one of the bands in history with the most influence over generations, and you're still complaining? If you don't like it then delete it, but at least recognise that it's ten times better than the vast majority of the shit you would pay for to replace it.
Even though I had deleted it multiple times, it kept appearing whenever I formatted my Mac. Finally, I contacted an online Apple agent to get rid of this ghastly album. It took 45 minutes (9 years on my iCloud), but finally, it's gone. Finally.! It was unbearable because it was impossible to delete.
U2 should never have apologized. People are just spoiled dipshits who can't learn to appreciate. I had never actually heard of U2 before the free album, but am now a fan.

I LOVE this album. LOVE it. Thank you, U2. You never disappoint. As for the critics, there will always be people who chose to see the negative rather than the positive, even if that positive is a gift. Their loss.
That's a rather arrogant statement. This is not a gift, it's a violation of your own personal space. A gift is something you can return or pass on if you don't like it. You can only hide this, not deIete this anymore. I recently upgraded my OS and it appeared out of nowhere. Now all I can do is hide it but it keeps reappearing from time to time. Thank goodness I don't have it on my Android phone, it would drive me crazy. Music like food and clothes and many other things in life is personal taste. It's the height of arrogance to assume everyone likes you. Let people decide what they want. Don't force it on them.
They were definetly in the wrong. They should have given you the option to download/install it on your own. It shouldn't have been automatic and nearly impossible to delete.
I'm still rather confused as to why people are so upset. Isn't the album initially just on our iClouds? For example, I see the album in my iTunes, but the files themselves aren't actually downloaded onto my computer since it's living on the iCloud at the moment, which I'm fine with. Users have the option to NOT download the files from the cloud, so it's not like the album is actually taking up any hard drive space on the computer (or taking up any memory on my iPhone). So....... what's the problem?

In the past I’ve been a fan of U2 but it was a CHOICE. Just as it is a CHOICE to celebrate Christmas or not. No adult wants to be spoon fed music or religion.
Without reading your comment I thought I heard a few people gasping at that point, but I then listened to it with the volume on full and it's 100% coughing
but even people who didnt like u2 had it added to their account didnt they? and it couldnt be deleted as far as i know. what if somebody only listen to classic or jazz and then put their library on shuffle and then u2 keeps coming on. why wouldnt you complain?
its not that it was given for free. its the fact it was downloaded to peoples phone without their permission. and to top it all off, u cant delete it. now imagine ur phone only having 16 gb and a good chunk of it being occupied by that album to w/c u dont even listen to.
I really try to understand the people who took issue with this album automatically being put on iTunes... I just don’t think I am capable of understanding. First of all I think the idea was brilliant. Secondly, I think it was very kind and generous. 8 years on and I still love every track of the album. Sad to say that with streaming services I just don’t purchase and consume music like I did in the 80’s & 90’s so fortunately I did not miss out on this great album. Unfortunately it just reminds me how many great full albums out there that I may never hear. Thanks U2 for sharing your creativity and talent with me for free. I have so many great memories to these songs.
It would have been okay perhaps if the album has available for free to people who chose to download it. Unfortunately, it was forced onto everyone’s phones without their consent. There are people that do not like U2, and they had to spend a bunch of time working out how to delete it. Apple didn’t give people a way to completely delete it at first. It took a week for them to make that possible after a huge outcry. And then there’s the issue of Apple paying them $100,000,000.00 for the album - a little much really.
@@davepubliday6410 that first week was terrifying. People were afraid to shuffle their music and those who did were humiliated. You know how jarring it is to be at a street car meet in Detroit and all of the sudden the subwoofers start whimpering out The Miracle of Joey Ramone? Dude I have memories of going to a NE Patriots game and like the first 3 seconds of that song played before the DJ quickly changed it to Back in Black. You know how embarrassing it is to get handed the aux cord and this song accidentally plays . There are two places in this world that U2 fits. The music that plays before the trailers at the movie theatre. The soundtrack to a slideshow for some white girls class trip to Peru. That’s it.
@@DuckiestBoat959 That’s freakin hilarious! I remember this distinctly because my dad was a U2 fan, and even he was like what the hell? I had to show him how to delete it. Of course music on phones was still kind of new and the blunder is really on Apple for improper use of their own technology. Sounds like they got a raw deal from U2 that might’ve even partly led to the failure of the iTunes platform LOL
"Why would anyone want another U2 album" (yes, why ?) asks Bona, could have something to do with Apple paying him and his backing band somewhere in the region of 100 million dollars, bit of an incentive if ever there was one.
I think people were mad cause they didn’t tell us so you’d just go into your music and see an album you didn’t buy and think your account got hacked or something. It probably didn’t help that you couldn’t delete the album either. They should’ve had it available to everyone but you’d have to download it yourself rather then just putting it in everyone’s library.
Studio2770 Well, actually the thing was initially you couldn't initially delete it. Apple had to release a patch for people to remove it from their library if they didn't want it. That's kind of the cringeworthy thing. I don't use iTunes either, but I have plenty of friends who do and I remember it has had issues before with autosyncing things and I had an old roommate who only recently finally found the patch to remove it from her iPod. I think it is noble to give out free music, but it was definitely a bad move to not simultaneously release a means to get rid of it if you really didn't want it the same day. I'm sure for some people it was a great treat, but then there are also others who just don't like their music or maybe were having memory management issues. I mean, I hear ya on it being a first world problem and it probably wasn't a lot, but for some people that choice really does matter and not having an opt out option to begin with is kind of like strapping people to a chair. It also wasn't a regional release either. They gave the album to everyone and some people included in "everyone" have older devices with less memory capacity. Like some of our old devices actually get sent to the streets of the developing world and while maybe their internet connection might be spotty, they might get by with what little connection they are able and even a super old school 1 gb iPod with tied iTunes account that STILL got that free album. Most of the complainers probably were not included among the people with actual difficulty, but people in those kinds of situations do exist. Some of them may be citizens of a developing country or maybe others might be aid workers or something working in a remote location. I mean, I've had friends who did missionary or aid work after they finished school and when they went it's not like they didn't bring any of their devices with them.
Reika I looked into it a bit more and there's info on when a new iOS user is setting up their account or whatever there's a box that says "auto download" which is self explanatory. The user can uncheck it so they don't get content automatically downloaded to their account. However, I know someone who never received the album. I don't know if they unchecked that box. I heard about that patch but I'm not sure if it was necessary to provide one. There are ways provided on how to delete the album. It doesn't seem like a patch was needed. www.wikihow.com/Remove-the-Free-U2-Album-from-Your-iPhone I remember my Twitter timeline being filled with people complaining about it. I decided to search it on Twitter and there are still people complaining about it... I don't understand that. Is it easier to be lazy and complain than figuring out how to delete it? You have a point on those in poorer countries. Who knows, maybe some of them liked the album and appreciated it being free if they couldn't afford to buy it. Maybe some didn't like it but couldn't tweet their dismay. U2 and Apple made a gamble and it was a bit unwise.
Being honest..... I wasn't a fan of the free album thing, I have nothing against U2, I'm just not a fan, and having their album downloaded to my phone without asking me felt kind of invasive and like I was being told what I should listen to. I would have much preferred they give you the choice to download it for free and let word of mouth do the rest.
This album from front to back is insanely good. I've been listening to it consistently for the last 8 months and I still am not tired of it. Had always liked U2 previous to getting the album but this made me an even bigger fan. People that complained about it are literally morons. ITS FREE.
So just came back to using an iPhone after more than 5 years of not having one, and U2 won’t stop playing automatically any time my phone links to any Bluetooth device. I didn’t even know why my iTunes had U2 in it.
I think it was a good album; only thing that was weird was the delivery method. It would have been better as a "free for a limited time only" sort of offer and we wouldn't have all this backlash. But hey, it's not like me or the lads care...
For me, its just like other usual phones... like samsung got their own default sample tones.... And iPhone got U2's album as parts of "default sample tones"..... Why the hell ppl dun complain any other phones with their own default sample tones XD
S.O.I. was one of their greatest albums to date. There's classics on it. At 1st I was so happy and so confused when I got in on iTunes. I still play songs from it today. Fools complained because they don't know music. Facts. ....
U2 is the greatest band of all time. Who cares that some peasants complained about the Itunes thing? They should just be grateful that U2 thought of them.
The full thing might still be on youtube. It was an incredible episode. It was great with the guest that were already on then U2 came on and took it to the next level.
Did Taylor Swift get any flack like U2 did for taking her music off of Spotify? She's uber rich and successful yet gets mad that she isn't getting paid enough and leaves Spotify.
***** They've since said that they didn't know it would download automatically onto people's devices. Obviously they it ill have to take responsibility but since it had never been done before, that's the risk. I have no problems with musicians getting paid for their work any more than I have problems with plumbers or decorators for getting paid for their work. If it's what you do for a living then I don't see why you should pretend you don't want to get paid just before you're in the arts.
www.theguardian.com/music/2011/jun/17/u2-top-highest-paid-list because they're already "unfathomably rich" and all they care about is more money. And because they tried taking the high ground, saying "we're artists - all we want is for our music to be heard. I'm just father christmas and you're beating me with a stick" when it's obviously clear they were motivated by the cheque. Biggest bunch of cunts ever, they really can go fuck themselves.
+Nothing Really there was no competition to begin with. Pity complaining about free music doesn't require a full argument. People have the audacity to complain about a free album while pirating music or settling for streaming.
It's abour privacy. If you had an album by an artist you didn't like or especially hated, then you wouldn't like your privacy to be invaded and have their music be forcibly placed in your library.
Ummm I'm gonna go ahead and just say people were upset because they don't like u2 and all of a sudden had an entire album of theirs on their phone? Free does not equal desirable or good. Best thing they could have done is just make it available for free download if anyone wanted it, not act like it's christmas for the world here have this we know you want it. That being said I'm sure apple had a lot to do with that too, but really what kinda message does it send when you don't trust your own record to make money so you pair up with a company to get a check in advance?
The album was decent but it shouldn't be plomped upon people's itunes like everyone would automatically appreciate it. That's quite presumptuous and possibly arrogant. They obviously weren't expecting such negative reactions from anybody.
I remember having the iPhone 4 and finding this album in my music, while scrolling a disconnected phone on my way to school. I bought it silly me. Wonderful record as is their new one "songs of experience."
U2. The most deleted band.
did anyone hear the collective gasp when one of U2 members said "we wud atleast get paid.."?
+suraj punjabi I thought it was a couple of people coughing.
100% coughing.
Without reading your comment I thought I heard a few people gasping at that point, but I then listened to it with the volume on full and it's 100% coughing
They actually apologized for giving people a FREE album. It was literally given to people no charge, and people still complain. Unbelievable
but even people who didnt like u2 had it added to their account didnt they? and it couldnt be deleted as far as i know. what if somebody only listen to classic or jazz and then put their library on shuffle and then u2 keeps coming on. why wouldnt you complain?
its not that it was given for free. its the fact it was downloaded to peoples phone without their permission. and to top it all off, u cant delete it. now imagine ur phone only having 16 gb and a good chunk of it being occupied by that album to w/c u dont even listen to.
It was so generic。bloody hell even the album art work was generic. I can’t listen to this generic rock.
Julio Sunga It was forced into you library. Not forced to be downloaded. You can delete it. Quit lying.
RWooshBaiter you couldn’t delete it at first you dummy.
Still one of the greatest albums ever made!
@Right To Censor Dog you responded to a 3 year comment shut up
It's not even close to the best U2 album lol
U2 are underestimated, one of the greatest bands of all time.
Meh
In your opinion.
"Why would anyone want another U2 album" (yes, why ?) asks Bona, could have something to do with Apple paying him and his backing band somewhere in the region of 100 million dollars, bit of an incentive if ever there was one.
that and the fact they already had an album near completion.
I am not apple user, but I love them. So I buy their music.
Mind blown
I think people were mad cause they didn’t tell us so you’d just go into your music and see an album you didn’t buy and think your account got hacked or something. It probably didn’t help that you couldn’t delete the album either. They should’ve had it available to everyone but you’d have to download it yourself rather then just putting it in everyone’s library.
It was actually embarrassing the age we live in today where u2 have to explain themselves in a world where any one under 25 is a sorry excuse
Tyrone _The _lunatic_fringe same! Was an awesome concert I was 10 tho
This is the first time I got really disappointed that I don't have iTunes.
It's called e-mailing people a download code so they can get it IF THEY WANT IT.
Reika people sure don't mind pirating songs though, spoiled brats.
It doesn't seem like a patch was needed. www.wikihow.com/Remove-the-Free-U2-Album-from-Your-iPhone
I remember my Twitter timeline being filled with people complaining about it.
Already knew that Bono fact!
U2 .2015 in köln super super weiter so
Being honest.....
ITS FREE.
just because it’s “free” doesn’t mean people are gonna want it 😒
So just came back to using an iPhone after more than 5 years of not having one, and U2 won’t stop playing automatically any time my phone links to any Bluetooth device. I didn’t even know why my iTunes had U2 in it.
That’s weird
I think it was a good album; only thing that was weird was the delivery method. It would have been better as a "free for a limited time only" sort of offer and we wouldn't have all this backlash. But hey, it's not like me or the lads care...
It’s been 8 years, and I’ll never forgive them for putting that album on all of our devices. It was harassment.
Really?? Didn’t you like these songs? These are some of the best songs of ever heard!🩷
trash opinion
For me, its just like other usual phones... like samsung got their own default sample tones.... And iPhone got U2's album as parts of "default sample tones"..... Why the hell ppl dun complain any other phones with their own default sample tones XD
never knew the artist sign was bono
S.O.I. was one of their greatest albums to date.
Bono's a class act.
Since the new update the icon isn’t there anymore... :(
Jesus, sickened I missed such an interesting line up of guests, was it a good episode?
If you're from the UK it's on iPlayer :)
2 years late to this comment but that wasn't her point that made her leave Spotify
How much do we have to pay to get rid of it?
"we would at least get paid" - whatadick
why's he a dick?
***** They've since said that they didn't know it would download automatically onto people's devices. Obviously they it ill have to take responsibility but since it had never been done before, that's the risk.
I have no problems with musicians getting paid for their work any more than I have problems with plumbers or decorators for getting paid for their work. If it's what you do for a living then I don't see why you should pretend you don't want to get paid just before you're in the arts.
www.theguardian.com/music/2011/jun/17/u2-top-highest-paid-list
because they're already "unfathomably rich" and all they care about is more money.
And because they tried taking the high ground, saying "we're artists - all we want is for our music to be heard. I'm just father christmas and you're beating me with a stick" when it's obviously clear they were motivated by the cheque.
Biggest bunch of cunts ever, they really can go fuck themselves.
RichyB44 Yeah. They're rich. If you sell 150 millions albums and sell out football stadia and you've got a good manager you earn money.
DuffPaddy1 nice said, he's quiet now
Sorry we made awesome music and gave it to you free
What if it was a Limp Bizkit album. It's not about it being a good album. It's a commercial. It was forced on the public.
Nothing Really cry me a river.
Rez Did I win? Cause you don't seem to have a responding argument.
Some people dont have apple
I hated this. My wife just asked me "you like U2?" She didnt know about this, that itunes FORCED the albums onto us.
Some people don't believe in Father Christmas? Do they know it's Christmastime at all?
Graham always seems a little confused when sincere people come on the show.
I thought it was "Line across the Horizon "?????
Best songs they've ever written? Did they forget about Rattle and Hum, Achtung Baby, ATYCLB ???
Rattle in hum has one good song on it. SOI has quite a few
Does Bono have glitter in his hair or is he just really sweaty??
It wouldn’t be so bad if you could delete it, but every time your phone updates, it reinstalls.
1:44 Father Christmas doesn't give away crap
It wasn't Actung Baby they spammed
