As for running without water and the other things some complain about maybe they should be thankful it isn't theirs so they shouldn't worry about it. I really enjoy all the first starts you do. It's fun to see the old things come back to life.
Geez Johnathan .I wish I had a towing company. You always seem to find these bad ass cars and trucks. You are one hard worker and teaching Noah that there's life without video games. We didn't have that shit when we were Young did we .we were never bored. You my brother are the best utuber out there. God bless you
Jonathan back in 75 & 76 I drove an old blue Apache like this one to high school every day! It was an ex farm truck so it was a little crusty but I liked it anyway. It brought back good memories seeing you get this one running! Thanks for the video!
You are giving me faith in the old Stove Bolt 6 as a runner for a hobby truck to haul my toy trains around. Even the 6 banger 32 Coupe is so cool. Noah is the luckiest kid to be able to mentor with you. I am 70 and i am jealous i want to be there. D
couple squirts of oil in each cylinder sure helps boost compression and lubes cylinder walls. but its a chevy. if it turns it will run. another great video Jonathan W cant wait to see what you do next. keep up the great work.
As for the flak you get about cranking them over with the starter, running them without water, or doing things how you do them because you've been successful doing it your way for years, it's easy for us sitting on our sofa with a laptop to be a Monday morning quarterback. But you're out there doing it--bringing these relics back to life. Everyone has an opinion about how to do things "right", but let the critics drag something home and get a stone cold engine that hasn't run in Noah's lifetime cough back to life--oh and then make a video of themselves doing it. Until that happens, those of us who watch rather than do, should just sit, watch, listen, and learn.
you all probably dont care but does anyone know a trick to get back into an instagram account?? I was dumb lost the login password. I would appreciate any assistance you can offer me!
Noah is a fellow that works for me on the weekends and after school. Don't mind a bit you calling him my son, just wanted to let you know. Noah's grandfather is known very well for chopped tops, making convertibles from 4 doors to factory correct appearance and a lot of 4 door to 2 door conversions. His dad is also a mechanic and body man. I have been friends with his grandfather since long before Noah was born.
Well, you work well together as a team. Noah is a very lucky chap to have someone with your knowledge and skills to learn from. You are teaching the best way, hands on. Thanks again, from the Wirral, UK.
first of all, to heck with the starter/coolant police!!!!!!!!!!! just sat down with my coffee to a first start and that made my sunday morning!!!!!! i would say the truck is old enough to smoke!! awesome!! you and noah make a great team, love the coke bottle reference!! lmao!!!! looks like the nash is getting the special treatment!!!!!!!
Picking up my 3100 end of this month , ran 10 yrs ago still all original. Can't wait to start work on it When I was 16 my dad & I built his. Miss that truck Now my son's & I can build this one
You're creeping up on that 50K mark my Friend. Well deserved!! And you'll hit 100K in no time then you can show off your 100K RUclips play button in the Hardware Store! Cheers! See you tonight hopefully. Sean~
Had one of these ages ago and loved it. Short bed, step side. It came to me with a spotlight on the roof for spotlighting deer, I'd imagine. There's still some of 'em here in New Mexico.
Ignore the keyboard warriors. I like the truck as is because it's really unmolested. The wiring has to be the rarest of them all, I can't remember the last time I saw a 50's field truck that looked like that. While I myself wouldn't cut it down, I watch to see what you do and what you discover. If I was there and ponied up the money it would be different. It's not that way. Your truck, your game. Roll on Jonathan, we'll be watching. Thanks for sharing
I had a 1972 Chevy van straight 6 3 on a tree. One winter the water pump and radiator cracked wide open. I drove that van every day for a year to work in back. 1 mile each way. With no coolant at all. The straight Chevy straight six is a very tolerant engine
Another great first start video....short beds have always been more popular than long beds......just like 2 door cars over 4 door cars....just human nature....doesn't have to make sense, just the way things are...Thanks to Jonathan and Noah for the great videos...keep them coming....
Kids and young adults thinking they know everything is not new. What is new, is that they think looking things up on a smart phone or computer makes them smart...it does not. People who have experience will always know more than those who have none. I think I finally convinced my son to stop thinking about what he wants to say or what he thinks he knows, and listen to what's being said and watch what's being done. He can't take in and absorb any information when his mouth is always running.
I have a brother 22 years younger than me. He knows everything according to him and his friends. My younger brothers mouth is always open and his brain is NEVER in gear.
On this one you can hear the engine getting grinded up inside. Probably didn't put any lube in the cylinders. It is like honing out the dry cylinders and pistons. 😫🤪🤣🤣🤣🤣
Hay hauling days are over for this truck, so make her look good! Short bed for shore and a nice 283. Good luck and I like the channel, you have some mighty good friends , worth there weight in gold.
As someone who deals with lots of 4x8 materials, plywood, masonite, MDF, chip board, what have you... I LOVE a long bed! My fairly used (150,000 miles) 2006 Silverado with the extended cab and 8 foot bed I bought off a local appliance repair guy is the best thing I ever bought, upgrading from a Toyota compact pickup. You can drop a whole sheet of plywood in the back and it fits flat on the floor. I understand why short beds are more in demand but gimme my long bed!
Just did a cold start... my shop is Air conditioned and I had to pull my Cummins outside for a wash... it was at least 65 in there, glad I have a block heater!
If someone wanted a sport truck and not a truck to haul they want a short bed. I don't like short beds my '89 F150 is made to haul and the 8 ft bed is an asset a short bed to me isn't. Its great that you got that engine to fire even though it definitely has issues. Thanks for the fun video.
Nothing wrong with your methods, Jonathan! You've proven that, time and again! This is a nice quiet running 235, sounds good! I like a straight six with quiet exhaust.😊 Just like with your '59 Ford, a little work and this one can be a driver.
I always hated those potbelly carbs. I was into 60's gmc pick ups. Found huge tuning and economy with a '70 Nova Rochester Monojet. Super tunable and reliable. Different bolt pattern and linkage but worth it! Thanx for all the great pix and great insight into real American Life. Long live automobiles.
Personally I would keep the longbed. Having a shortbed 3100 is definitely worth more, but I’ve tried hauling some things that simply just don’t fit in a shortbed. If I could choose now I might go with a longbed for capability, shortbed for easier maneuverability. Whichever way you go with I’m sure it will turn out great. Nice video
You should fill a barn with all these old cars for Noah....In a few more years these old cars and trucks could go for God only knows how much....Try and sell all the new stuff and part out maybe....(easier said than done I know) It is getting harder to find all this stuff, a lot of towns don't have many treasures anymore....I can only imagine 20 years from now....love your work, thanks for another great video!
Good starter 😉 just don't want to see it be another thing to mess with but u know when to quit. You guys remind me of when I was a kid helping my dad work on our old cars.
Nice work getting it running. Pretty solid truck considering, especially me being NY, Hard to find something that solid up here. Thanks for sharing. I'd actually like to see how you shorten the bed. I have a good sense, but always nice to see all that's involved besides the obvious things needed to be done. Thanks for sharing.
You ever put one on the wheel lift, put it in 3rd gear and pull the plugs, and pull it down the road to circulate some oil and loosen things up? I don't have a wrecker but I have pulled a lot of them around the yard with my tractor like that.
👍 for small a block. We had a State stop us years and years ago and wondered if we thought we were crop dusters. Hahaha but that old 54 ford got us everywhere we wanted to go. Lol
Old mopar trick use a straight plug wire & a 318 water pump 3/8 bolt put the plug wire end on the bolt for starting plugs in the head I have one in my tool box for over 42 yrs I can not live without one. Works on any from hemi to lawnmower
Jonathan, I would love it if you tried adjusting the valves on the straight six and adding a can of Engine Restore. I would like to see if that brings the performance back. Several on you tube have used it successfully.
I have a 58 gmc pickup with a 270. When I tried to start it I bent a push rod cause the valves were stuck. Pulled the head off lapped the valves cleaned everything up. Started fine after that.
I think the short bed idea would the best route for quicker sale. I like the short beds better myself. I also like the V8 idea. Keep up the good work. Thanks
What are you doing stealing Jordan's jacket? LOL Hey, it's a 'skeeter truck! I had a '54 Chevy coupe with a six and 3 on a tree. I was always happy when it ran that good. Finally traded it for a '58 Pontiac 4 dr. boat.
Your videos always put a smile on my face sir... I'm recovering from surgery and have to be in bed for 6 weeks... Your channel helps me pass the time... And keeps my spirits up... For that thank you..
Hi Jonathan, " Ol' Smokey " would be a great name for this truck :) Really like watching these first start videos, I've learnt a lot thank you :) Cheers from Australia :)
Once the rockers are adjusted It may slow down the smoke or stop It altogether. I have the same motor In my 55 4 door 210. It does the same thing because 2 of the lifters have collapsed and I haven't replaced them yet. Nice job on getting the old girl running. It sounds good even with the noisy rockers.
Jonathan can I pick your brain about my 53 can't get it to start anymore. If so I'll let you know how it began not to start, and what I did so far to try to get it to run. Thank you for posting these videos
Last time we had an engine that hadn't run in quite a while we removed the plugs, squirted some oil in the cylinders and then with the valve cover off cranked it a bit while we watched the valves. Without the spark plugs in it the battery can turn the engine over quickly and if you don't have an oil pressure gauge then you can see that you have oil pressure when you see the oil as it lubes the rockers.
I find with some motors that have been sitting a while, taking the plugs out and giving a squirt of oil down each bore. It boosts the compression a bit and also gives some lube to the upper cylinder and rings. Smokes like a train for the first minute or so but gives me some peace of mind.
I was surprised the vacuum advance still worked. I use two stroke fuel mix to start engines that have sat a long time and have low compression. The two cycle oil really helps lube the rings up. Sounds ok other than a little valve clatter. I think by 59 all 235.5's had hydraulic valve lifters, so some might be sticky. Sad, but those heavy old straight six's really have no value, so a V-8 might be a good idea to stuff into it. When I say heavy, they weigh more than the 348 big block W motor in my 59 Bel Air.
Well they say that even a blind squirrel finds a acorn once in a while so with a quick ream of the cylinders and some brake fluid around the rings, she just may come to life. V8's are popular and the short box will get more money so if you have a can of paint then you can give it a jewish overhaul. Once it picks up some compression and you go out and run the carbon out of it, It will be the first one the block to sell for more than the cost. Dangle some airfreadhners off the mirror and it sell. Split the manifold and glass packs with some old exhaust for stacks like back in the day and it will be the new shop truck like you really need another one of those. It really sounds good. Good luck and start the 41 next please. I love you guys work and I don't have a nickle in none of it but my mouth gets me in trouble. I am surprised that you don't have s circle track for tow starting them GREAT VIDEO GUYS
Jonathan, Stacy David has a great demonstration on how to shorten a long bed to a short bed. Check out Stacy David's gears. Maybe you've already seen it but if not check it out. The way he does it, it leaves the strength in it so it won't come apart. Just wanted to let you know.
Hey Johnathan, you still have that inline 6 that you bought at auction a while back? I think it was a '57 model. It should fall over in there if you still got it. Seemed like a good runner on video.
You once said that you had obtained a device for resurfacing ignition points, but I don' t recall that you ever showed it in operation. Could you do that for us?
So I travel down the road every day sometimes only inches away from cars driving in the other direction going 60 miles an hour so if life's full of unsafe things with none of us can drive right
As for running without water and the other things some complain about maybe they should be thankful it isn't theirs so they shouldn't worry about it. I really enjoy all the first starts you do. It's fun to see the old things come back to life.

Jonathan, Stacy David has a great demonstration on how to shorten a long bed to a short bed. Check out Stacy David's gears. Maybe you've already seen it but if not check it out. The way he does it, it leaves the strength in it so it won't come apart. Just wanted to let you know.
Do you ever put 2 stroke oil in your priming gas?
Two stroke in the gasoline makes it harder to start as it doesn't atomize as easily
The timing mark for TDC is a ball bearing in the flywheel and the pointer is in the bell housing by the starter.
Chuck Small Yes and the timing on those is 0 at tdc.

Enjoy wrenching with you on a Sunday morning!
I tell you what if I had the money. I would drop in the v8 and leave it a long box. Growing up my grandparents had one on the farm.
You once said that you had obtained a device for resurfacing ignition points, but I don'
t recall that you ever showed it in operation. Could you do that for us?
That would be a sheet of thousand grit sandpaper and some elbow grease
That a boy. Portable fuel tank next to battery 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
So I travel down the road every day sometimes only inches away from cars driving in the other direction going 60 miles an hour so if life's full of unsafe things with none of us can drive right
Would dumping marvel mystery oil in the plugs help build compression?
or pour a 1/2 litre in carb and let sit a half hour
I think it would help!
