"C'mon and slam, this is who I am." - Shadow the Hedgehog
Flawed as it is, this film still gave me the gleeful, childlike joy that very few things can pull out of me these days. I could rattle off a long, long list of issues, but at the end of the day, the visceral, joyful reaction I had when watching this for the first time is what I'm going to remember about this movie.
Same, I have issues with the film, but at the end of the day I came out of my showing with the biggest damn grin on my face. Several moments got me so giddy, it was disgusting, and thats more than I expected it to do.
Same dude.
I've watched the film so much, I have gotten used to the issues. All except 2. How short the battle between Ghidorah and Rodan was and that scene where Godzilla and Ghidorah are about to slam into each other, it not only cuts away, but the 2 battling is blocked by the Argo flying infront of the screen! It was a total slap in the face.
I saw this movie as sort of a birthday for my brother. I loved it, he loved it, and when I showed this movie to my friend who was kind of a G fan and he loved it. I really hope they don't stop after Godzilla vs Kong.
Hail to the king, baby!
Waitin for DESTOROYAH to show up later, and possibly Gigan and Mechagodzilla.

I certainly loved it, I just wish the monster fights were more flushed out and easier to see, the camera work is truly not good, and I hope it’s something they improve upon for Godzilla VS Kong. I still prefer 2014, but KOTM is an epic in every sense of the word, and I’ll find myself smiling at many moments in the film.
Godzilla 2014 and KOTM are tied for my favorite Godzilla Movie
@@miguelgcgamer9878 Same
2014 was my favorite up until KOTM came along. In hindsight, I definitely see it's flaws (dark lighting, stiff acting from all hands except Bryan Cranston), but it still has a special place in my heart. Watching 2014 was like seeing a legend leap from myth to reality; it felt like Godzilla was actually a real creature that I was witnessing before me.
Well, i had not problem with the camera this time, i could see all the monsters good enough and in good pictures, while i think 2014 is just way too dark (like litteraly) so sometimes you don't see alot. I think watching them after each other as one big "movie" you get the giant and great build up 2014 is, and then the action packed nature of the movies. 2014 is basically just a whole set up/build up movie, just one more monster fight in the middle could've been good.
I have to disagree. I think the really obvious bad spot was the weird shaking in Antartica. That was weird but the rest was awesome.
“Made for fans, by fans.” Damn right, despite the fact that some people like Eric Carter and Filmento who weren’t fans actually became fans after watching this film. Good review my dude!
I became a fan after watching it
I as a fan before ofbl toho films made me hate it
That’s the absolute truth ! The RUclips reviewers such as Chris Struckmann and Anger Joe, say they are “fans” don’t understand the movie’s intentions.
Haha was gonna say that exact thing, then I saw your comment!

Great review. Fair criticisms anyone can respect, genuine acknowledgements of the high points and low points of the film, as well as the meta surrounding some of the decisions made in the process of its creation. After years of swearing to myself that I would never accept a CGI-heavy kaiju movie, KOTM captured everything I love about this franchise (and tokusatsu as a whole) without a lick of practical effects work in sight.
It’s for this reason that I vastly prefer it over not only Godzilla 2014 but also Shin
Well they may have not been able to use practical suitmation for the monsters (for obvious reasons), but they _did_ actually use mo-cap for most of the monsters to get their personalities to come across rather than just being crafted wholesale by computer animators- King Ghidora was performed by three guys standing really close to each other (so now you know where Kevin's quirks come from).
ArcaneAzmadi And it’s Kevin’s quirks that really sold this film for me
Damn man, for me KotM is the best of Western Godzilla, while Shin is the best of Eastern Godzilla.
Shin is just, much much more relatable for us here, so it hits some intimate points for us
Godzilla Fanboy Take that back
@@KKAkuoku wait, what about Pacific rim? That's all cg but its a great homage to the tokusatsu genre as a whole, with great kaiju v mech fights?
I greatly enjoyed this movie, even more the second time around. The human element is a bit underdeveloped but not nearly as abhorrent as some would have you believe. But man did the director understand the monsters. Each one of the main four felt like they were ripped right out of the Toho films, with excellent extra touches added in. New tweaks in personality and characterization that really made them feel like godly characters rather than big animals. And I love the new mythology this movie introduced. The titans essentially serving as the inspirations for the Old Gods, each of them having they’re own place in a hierarchy with different relationships between themselves and humans. I’m very invested in this world that KOTM has created
I know by technicality, this isn’t a great film. Hell, it’s probably not even a good film, but Goddamn do I adore it. This is one of the few movies I’ve seen in a while where I can tell genuine heart, love, and effort went into this movie. The titans look phenomenal and are great homages to their old designs, it has unique fight sequences and while most of them are in the night the use of light and color more than makes up for it, the soundtrack is godly and has great remixes as well as new themes made for this film, and even the characters while still pretty flat, are a significant step up from the last film. Michael Dougherty really does know and understand the franchise he’s working with unlike directors like Michael Bay, who doesn’t care about the source material or Zack Snyder, who only captures the visuals and nothing else. I mean, the credits has the four main monsters playing as themselves, the movie ends with Blue Oyster Cult. I know this is often lumped into the garbage movies of 2019 category. However, compared to films like Hellboy, Dark Phoenix, and MIB: International, I think KOTM is a wonderful film made by people who cared about the big G, and it both shows and delivers.
Yeah objectively this movie is shit. I nit-picked the hell out of this movie that I acutally think now that this movie sucksn
@@Saltyaf38 that's your opinion that it sucks objectively but not to other fans
@@battlebot2410 you cant have opinions on a movie from story stand point and plot. If it's bad and lazy it's bad and lazy, you can like a movie as entertainment and that's an opinion but objectively there is only one answer.
@@Saltyaf38 for someone who's called godzilla Fanboy you don't seem to know that most godzilla films make no sense (except the original and heisei era) like for example how does godzilla jump in the air? What purpose does manilla have in final wars besides just existing? If you watch some of the showa films and the Millennium films the story and plot makes no sense but we godzilla fans don't care as long as we get monster fights and destruction and you say the movie "objectively sucks" but do you really think anyone else would agree with you? And why bash on people who loved this movie? I watched your ranking all godzilla films and you said "if you disagree, fuck your entire family" don't deny it I saw that video just goes to show you how much of a asshole you are and you're not the only godzilla fan on the planet! But apparently you're a teenager and teens are complete assholes! Just other people enjoy this movie and just stop harassing people who do so and this movie isn't objectively trash at least not to me and probably 75% of the fanbase and you can have your opinion no matter what but you can't just go around saying "hurr hurr if you loved kotm than you should kill yourself and I'm the only godzilla fan on the planet hurr hurr oink oink"
@@battlebot2410 why do you write an essay for a comment?
Dougherty did a splendid job with this movie, loved all the small quirk and details, like the number of each Titan post, the Mothra twins, etc, it showed that they actually care for the movie. While the monsters aren't suitnimation, the cgi is not crap, the motion capture involved gave them character and personality.
And for no reason at all, we burnt it to the ground.
Truthfully this is my favorite film of 2019
It exceeded my expectations in every way and my father and I have seen it 3 times
I saw it FIVE times on theatres! And I did the sing-along thing EVERY SINGLE TIME :P
I unfortunately only got to see it once in the theater, but it quickly became burned into my memory.
Justin Johnson same favorite film of 2019 and saw it 3 times in theater
Saw it twice
THIS WAS MY FAVORITE MOVIE OF ALL TIME! It beat httyd3 imo
KOTM is basically a modern Showa film, it bears both the good, and bad qualities from that era.
Hehe "Bear"
It's more like a rip-off than a modern showa film.
And I think that's precisely the problem cause most of the Showa films were garbage.
I cared more about the story here than in 2014 - which lost ALL of its momentum when Cranston's character died.
I maintain some fans are holding this film to a standard they don't hold any others to.
Agree on everything.
Agreed. People say that Dr. Serizawa was the most interesting character across both films, but honestly, he never really struck a chord with me in anything but the name. Even with his sacrifice; if anything, I felt more bad for Godzilla in that moment.
I've said this elsewhere, but I was surprised by how much I empathized with Mark Russell. There was just something about that opening scene in San Francisco that really hit me in a way that I didn't expect to get hit. I know the family drama is kind of cliched by now, but I genuinely came to feel for this guy, and I think it's a sobering reminder of the after-effects one of these creature's rampages would have in the real world.
And I think it's weird that people are criticizing the characters of _this_ movie without bothering to check back to the classic Toho films. And believe me, KOTM's characters are far from the worst in the franchise. Now, granted, just because these characters may have the same problems the Toho ones do isn't an excuse to keep having the problem, but it's still something to keep in mind.
It's hard to say this movie had a story
@Godzilla Fanboy I dunno, the story was pretty obvious to me.
@@jurassickaiju14 it got dropped as soon ad they released the monsters. Then at that point it was a plot driven movie with may to much boring scenes, at that point the story was gone and the plot was kill the monsters. Argue with me I dont care I know I'm right.
This is by far the most terrifying and epic version of King Ghidorah!
My favorite film of 2019..
Godzilla KOTM came out on Blu-ray after my grandma’s funeral a month ago.. there’s a moment between Mark and Serizawa in the sub where they are going to help Godzilla get back on his feet, that touched my heart in recovery from mourning. The dialogue in that scene is the best dialogue I’ve ever heard.
Godzilla KOTM is the greatest film in this legendary franchise, it might not earned the amount of money or critics respect but as a Godzilla fan, it has a special place in my heart. I love it to pieces. Seeing my hero on the big screen again is phenomenal..
You're the first reviewer I've watched who said "Its to be argued that this film was made for the fans, by the fans". Shit in Godzilla KOTM was so perfect for me that I couldn't even comprehend my feelings on it at first. The 2014 movie made me so excited I had a panic attack but KOTM went beyond that and made me cry with how much of it was crafted with love. The scene where they come to Godzillas aid against Ghidorah and the SNES Game Super Godzillas theme music started playing at JUST the right moment as the battle reared up. I just fuckin cried. I felt like I was 5 years old again. And because of that, this movie will always be close to my heart.
The SNES theme was in there?
You can either adore this film for being so respectful to the source material, or dislike it for being so authentic.
Either way, for better or for worse this is a true Godzilla and I love it wholeheartedly. Long live the king
No words can truely describe how awesome this movie was.
That shot of Godzilla stomping towards Ghidora while flanked by jets and helicopters was just so wonderfully over the top and absurd that I chuckled with delight at the sight of it. I loved that they brought back the idea of impossibly oversized flying fortresses for the human faction. And so on and so on.
I don't believe so. It was a headache to watch, it keeps switching back to human and monster drama instead of focusing what's important the monster drama.
Julianne Marda are you serious? The main plot of the movie was the monster drama, whatever the humans did involved the Titans in someway so you can’t say it didn’t focus on the “monster drama”
@@Sergio-yh2xl I am serious mind you.
It always cuts to the human drama when the monster drama starts getting cool. Like in 2014.
Julianne Marda I disagree, the Human drama is very much based off the monster drama, King Ghidorah escaping Antartica, Emma talks about freeing the Titans(which is both monster and human drama) Ghidorah becomes Alpha, Monarch shows all the Titans awakening and following his call(monster drama) Oh and Mothra’s god rays scene, that was both monster and human drama.
I love Godzilla King of The Monsters 2019. It may not be as good as Godzilla 2014, but it’s enough to keep you satisfied. And don’t listen to those lousy critics who know nothing about Godzilla.
Your wilding if you think this is worse than the first film lmao

I have mixed feelings about this movie.
The fanboy side of me loves it, but the other side got kinda tired by the too clear fanservice and callbacks...
That being said I love how they portrayed the kaijus and even more how they tried to came with interesting designs for the new ones (that hopefully will be reused in future projects).
I will admit that some of the fan-service is a little over-done. I didn't care for the reference to the Mothra fairies, mostly because they didn't contribute to the story in any way. Y'know, for all the talk of the Oxygen Destroyer having no build-up or anything (a valid criticism, I'd like to add), at the very least it was a part of the story and moved things along.
@@jurassickaiju14 I imagine the Mothra faries are there to set up a possible Mothra standalone film
With full honesty I say that this is my favorite Godzilla film to date. Hate to say that part of the reason I love it so much might be because it's the first Godzilla film I've had to see without my father.

I love your channel. Your reviews are just excellent. Keep it up. :)
Best way to express how good this movie is: I never desired to get into Godzilla till I saw this movie. I'm a total newbie
The music, in particular, stood out. I've never been a Mothra fan but when I heard her theme, it just clicked in my head all of a sudden. Like a subconscious seal of approval, Mothra's song being played just made me know in my heart that this was the real deal, that this was the Godzilla from my childhood. . . weird I know
Thank you!! Someone finally mentions how damn good the soundtrack was. It literally shot this movie up to one of my favorite movie experiences in theaters ever.
Sadly, I only got out to see this once in the theater, but nabbed it as soon as it came to Blu-Ray.
I love this movie. I've never been a truly hardcore G-Fan, but I know enough about the franchise that I got a little smile on my face when I realized Zhang Ziyi was playing twins and what that (and her pixie cut) meant, I chuckled inwardly when I saw Castle Bravo was armed with Masers, my heart was warmed when (an otherwise annoying) young boy in the theater with me hollared "Rodan! It's Rodan!" and my eyes went wide when I realized Godzilla had gone Burning. I do feel the Oxygen Destroyer could have been given a bit more reverence, being THE weapon that killed Godzilla originally, but that was the only bit of "fanservice" I honestly felt was wasted. Beyond that, the story and characters are fine. . . no landmarks in exceptional storytelling, but solid.
I have to disagree with the Russells being "least compelling." Yes, the family drama ultimately pales in comparison to the global extinction happening around them, but it's the impetus for the entire story. Without understanding who these people are, we have no understanding for why they do what they do and how the plot gets set in motion. That's what kickstarts this whole disaster, is these people and why and how they are who they are when this film's story starts. And honestly, the singularly most emotional moment in the picture for me is when Mark, preparing to leave Castle Bravo to find his daughter because he honestly believes that's all he has left. . . and then Mothra makes her entrance. Without a character voicing that the film has reached its Darkest Hour and Despair Event Horizon, Mothra's arrival, bringing Hope back with her, carries significantly less weight. But that's just me.
I really liked both Godzilla 2014 and Godzilla King of the Monsters for different reasons. I liked the disaster aspect of the first movie but this is a fun romp. I feel like I like Monarch more this time since it's kinda plain and boring, I'm okay with Monarch being a little more...G.I. Joe esque. Favorite scene might be Godzilla flashing his dorsal plates as a warning underwater or Godzilla being crowned king for real. All four monsters are fantastic and this is one of the best King Ghidorahs ever where he is large in charge, an alien and damn near unstoppable. I look forward to seeing Mark, Emma and Chen again. I'm okay with them using the Oxygen Destroyer since this Serisawa went out of his way to save Godzilla, even if the OD was kinda appearing out of nowhere. So it's a great circle I feel. I do kinda wish this was Gamera Trilogy level good but none the less this was fun. I'M PUMPED FOR GODZILLA VS. KONG!
I 100% agree with pretty much everything here, man.
And I liked Shin Godzilla too for the record. Only thing I haven't really liked recently is the anime trilogy which has some great ideas...just can't sink into them.
I agree with you too
Oops! Not Emma. I meant Madison. More of Mark, Madison and Chen. Or who kows maybe Emma somehow survived several nuclear explosions and internal injuries.
@@Irrelevant402 I dont know if she really survived two atomic explosions after enougher in a range like and atom bomb. But i mean maybe, but it would kind of ruin GvK for her, because they have to make up a lot to have this happening. I look forward for Madison since she is under my top 3 Godzilla non monster characters and hope she will play big part as its rumored, because i really don't want her to end like Fords dad, that would be really a waste of potential really good character.
at the end of the film i was left crying because i got to see all the monsters i loved as a kid put on the big screen
Absolutely loved this film, and in my opinion I actually thought it was better than avengers endgame (Triggered Marvel Fan EXE has entered the chat) And it beohnet my opinion still holds to this day. An dim very happy to see you getting use to this film and liking it the way it is, like how filmemento, dangerville, omni vewier, and Dman1954 have adored it for how everything works, and I encourage you to watch there reviews if you already haven't.
By the way because you have been reviewing the Gamera trilogy just like you did with Godzilla, I am wondering if you would consider reviewing the Kong trilogy, and maybe the Mothra Trilogy. I consider them the Three Kings, an the Queen of the Kaiju Genre.
That scene where Gidorah becomes literally the King of the Mountain at the end of the first act, plus Godzillas roar at the very end were just DRAW DROPPING!
The script and the family story tarnished it just a little,I wished they leaned into Vera Farmiga becoming a super villain for the ages.
Overall, 5stars!
This movie was made so clearly for fans like me that grew up watching the films that I honestly can’t help but love it with all my heart
This was absolutely a great Godzilla film, intended to please and enthrall long time fans while possibly inviting new allegiances. The nods to the original Gojira and subsequent Toho films worked seamlessly with the Howlllywoodisation of Godzilla. I remember getting goosebumps every time I heard the OG Godzilla roar, or his theme or Mothra, or when they fly from Rodan straight at Ghidorah. Chills. It's got that MCU formula going on, and if that's good for superheroes, it's even better for the Kaiju.
When Mothra's theme played, I could almost hear the fairy twins singing her song. Then when they showed the picture of the twins, I almost lost it.
Honestly, I thought the story was better than a lot of critics and fans give credit for. While the characters are rather basic, i found myself getting more invested in their story more so than the 2014 movie, which i also liked. Hands down, this movie was my favorite blockbuster of last year.
the movie has a high rewatch value for me, a lot of the scenes are very memorable
This was such a great film. I love it
This film was worth the wait. Hearing that classic Godzilla roar as he marched into Boston with the Ifukube theme blaring took me right out of the theater and back to a little captivated kid on their parents' couch. It's also introducing a lot of people to this beautiful franchise, which is always fine by me.
Long live the king, and I can't wait for GvK!
Everytime a classic Godzilla music plays in the movie, they always give me goosebumps. I love the classic musics.
I adore this film dearly. It managed to tell a pretty interesting race against time winner take all tale while still managing to build up its universe. Something a lot of movies that try to make cinematic universes these days fails to achieve. The characterization ans designs of the new monsters are some of my favorite depictions of the monster ever, and despite the certainly not being in the lime like I actually rather enjoy the human cast a lot as they feel pretty grounded with understandable if albeit unoriginal motivations with eccentric takes on their personality that I think makes them a bit more memorable amongst the countless other human appearances in Godzilla films.
Finally! Someone who GETS IT, this is why I subscribed to this channel, a honest, truthful understanding review!
After seeing this film nine times in theaters, I can honestly say this is in my Top 5 favorite Godzilla movies, maybe even top three.
Also, when it comes to the whole average star rating you've given Godzilla films throughout your videos, with this review, the average went barely up from 3.29 to 3.31.... not important what so ever, but it is a slight retrospective look back at these reviews for the last year or so.

Perfectly summarized this movie. You heard that, Roland Emmerich?
When I heard the actual Godzilla theme music. I won’t lie, I cried, I could not believe how well they nailed this. It’s the movie I always wanted growing up.
Took the words right out of my mouth... hearing the classic themes was so awesome, and one thing that had me with a stupid smile was when they said Ghidorah was in fact, an alien... I was willing to accept that for this movie they were more than likely just going to reimagine him as another Titan, like Godzilla and company (It wouldn't even be the first time Ghidorah is reimagined)... but the fact they actually went with his original origin... I loved it so much

Believe it or not, you and I were FAR kinder to this film than the critics. I saw it 4 times (once in RPX, arguably the best way to view it if you don't have IMAX) and even my dad enjoyed it, expecting just another remake of the first GHIDORAH but being pleasantly surprised by the new approach in story! @@Planet_R.M. shin was good too but not better than KOTM
@@Planet_R.M. Shin is a completely different film, man.
@@Planet_R.M. Says the guy who thinks he's smart comparing 2 completely different films.
What I said was a fact: Shin and KOTM are so different from each other to the point that it's impossible to compare the two.
@@Planet_R.M. Allow me to explain: Different genres. KOTM is schlocky fun and explosions and Shin is just a good movie. I like Shin more, but both movies have different goals.
@@Planet_R.M. Yet, the differences easily outweigh the similarities.
Both are great in their own ways, but it's not even really a fair comparison. It's like comparing Infinity War to a 2011 documentary.
In my opinion this was a vast improvement from the 2014 film and is just so amazing. When I went to see Godzilla 2014 I had never been so exited in my life since I am a huge Godzilla fan and never thought I would see him on the big screen but when I walked out I was massively disappointed but for Godzilla king of the monsters I walked out with a huge smile. Everything was just better the story the monsters the pacing the acting the soundtrack the visuals the action just an overall better film. My thoughts are explained perfectly in Eric Carter's RUclips video so look up Eric Carter Godzilla on RUclips if you. want to see how I view both films.
Even though the movie has issues (mainly in the story being alright and some characters could have been better). I still love it and had an amazing time watching it. Not only this, the portrayal of Godzilla, Mothra, Rodan and Ghidorah is always incredible; especially here. The soundtrack is a goddamn masterpiece and Im hoping Bear McCreary comes back for GvsK and the fight are obviously very well done.
Honestly, there is nothing else for me to say but that Michael Doughtery did a fantastic job with KotM and im very excited for Godzilla vs Kong. Im wishing the very best for GvsK and in general the Monsterverse.

How did this one do worse than the last one? This was far superior to the 2014 movie.
Competition/Timing. This movie came out smack in between the release of at least four Disney movies; Aladdin and Avengers before it, and Lion King and Spider-Man after it. Of course it got lost in the box office scramble.
@@jurassickaiju14 this, especially since the kaiju genre is not that big compared to family/superhero/etc (i.e pacific rim, the meg, rampage, etc never breaks the box office like passing 1 billion)
Also the trailers for kotm. Marketing for the movie was garbage and showed way too much before the movie even came out.
It wasn't superior. Bad monster designs, bad CGI, no weight to the kaiju, personally I prefer the animalistic approach of 2014 rather than the godly one of 2019, it wasn't serious nor apocalyptic but paintfully cheesy, it threw any sense of believability out the window, soundtrack is good on it's own but lacks originality, the movie inserted dumb fantasy aspects into the Monsterverse, ridiculously fast technology progression in universe, constant weather effects and shaky cam coupled with bad monster designs make the already badly choreographed fight scenes even harder to make out.
I still think people underestimate the substance of this film.
Nathan Marchand It’s very rich and interesting to understand the dialogue and the substance is there for anyone to look into.
I find it really weird and unbelievable how much people underestimate yeah
I think the standout scene for me is the scene with Dr. Serizawa and Godzilla:
1. Once again, Dr. Serizawa is sacrificing himself, but instead of killing Godzilla, here, he is saving him.
2.. He's also doing so with the same type of weapon that fell on his home country (a nuclear weapon).
3. And Serizawa, a Japanese man, places a tender hand on Godzilla, and calls him "an old friend" in his native language no less, showing how the relationship between Japan and Godzilla has grown over the decades.
I think that the heart of the film lies in Serizawa's line: "Sometimes... the only way to heal our wounds is to make peace with the demons who created them."
Mark had to make peace with Godzilla, because that would be the only way he could move past his son's death, and
Serizawa healed his wounds from the A-Bombs by using the very thing that caused them (a nuke) to save Godzilla.
These two are the Human MVPs for me in this film..
Kind of cliched by now, but this truly is my favorite film of 2019, with only _Spider-Man: Far From Home_ getting anywhere close on my list. I think you hit the nail on the head with this review, and I'm glad to hear you've warmed up to it since your initial viewings. I definitely liked this better than 2014, and it's probably my favorite Godzilla film as of now.
Although I do have to disagree a tiny bit on the "surface-level" symbolism point. At least one other person has pointed out that there's a whole lot that you can unpack from Serizawa's sacrifice scene.

But all in all, great review. I for one am eagerly awaiting _Godzilla vs. Kong,_ and I hope it gives the MonsterVerse the financial boost it needs to continue.

one thing that really bugged me..when the fight scenes goin on and second later they cut it off and moved it to human drama...godamn it..i really like to see godzilla and others toe to toe without human interfere
I don't know why so many people are critical of this movie. As a long-time Godzilla fan it gave me everything I wanted and more. The story was not as bad as some say and I liked how the monsters were shrouded by the elements - it made their appearances seem more real and created tension. The fact that Dougherty threw in so many call-backs and included the nuclear pulse was so cool. It's a shame that GvsK forgot all about the other titans, and let's be honest, even an exhausted Godzilla would have have given Mecha a little more trouble. I guess I'm biased. He is the KOTM after-all!
Well done. Your comments echo my thoughts almost exactly as I've watched the film twice in theaters and four times at home. It took me that long to register just how the Sally Hawkins character died - thanks to the quick cutting. LOL. Being from an older generation and a fan of the 1954 G (and Rodan) I didn't understand what the film was doing at first until I realized it was an Americanized version of such films as Destroy All Monsters, Godzilla VS. Monster Zero. etc., etc. Films that I missed until recently after catching them on Cable. Since then I've grown to like this film much more. It's kind of like candy. Hardly nourishing but oh so sweet.
This movie was epic as fuck, 4 legendary kaijus never looked this beautiful
I loved how they paid tribute to the old films by using the sound effects of Godzilla and the kaiju and also using Akira Ifukube's music i like 2019 better than 2014 because it had easter eggs that represent the history of the films before it.
"All four monstars" oh that's good.
I wasn't a huge fan of Mothra until I saw this movie. Pleasantly surprised with her character to say the least. Also, Godzilla's side-to-side roar as he enters Boston gets me every single time.
I respect your opinion. You have your points. Yet I hope they correct their course and make a quality Godzilla movie, like the one from 2014. This one was too much style over substance. And too much action over tension. The fights were well done, but they lacked the nails and teeth mentality of the 2014 movie. Godzilla way too often using his atomic breath. I myself prefer more physical kaiju fights.
Godzilla using his atomic breath in this movie was like Korra Going into the avatar state in book 2
Sry @Caye Daws, I have no idea what you are talking about.
I've enjoyed this movie and it's human characters yes they aren't the best but they're way better then most of the characters from 2014. Especially Ford. And yes the weather can get annoying but I didn't mind it. Especially ghidorah storm, he's like a living hurricane and I love it. Thank god he's an alien throw that realism crap out the window. Rodan was cool if only he fought godzilla and then helped him during the final battle, but what we got was still cool. Mothra awesome just awesome. Godzilla is awesome as always and yes the oxygen destroyer was thrown in but remember it's a prototype so no doubt it'll probably make a comeback. Such a awesome movie. Can't wait for her to return. I can't wait for the GvK trailer when that drops
Ghidorah being an alien isn't that unbelievable but the movie would be fine without Mothra's magic BS.
@@kasjachrum then that wouldn't be mothra without her reincarnation and connecting with her twins. It's part of her character
Reincarnation isn't the problem it's the shared ancestral memory that irritates me and no we don't need the twins. Mothra could just be another monster with more godly, benevolent qualities. It's like saying Godzilla wouldn't be himself if he didn't do the tail dropkick or Gorosaurus wouldn't be himself without the kangooro kick or Kong without falling in love with a human woman. Not every trait of the character has to be carried over.
@@kasjachrum again talking away what makes these characters specel because "realism" is dumb. Look at zilla 98. Not everything needs this ground realistic crap just keep them to who they are
98 went overboard but do we need telepathic gods in the Monsterverse?. It ironically makes the american versions of the monsters less unique. What's the point of making new movies if you're just going to copy and paste the monsters from the old ones?
Reading one by one all negative reviews from critics, feeling upset and disgusted, than finding this channel and fans writing all of what i felt when i watched it at the first time...
I'm home.
Another fantastic video on your amazing channel! I love your reviews and I’ve always liked your simplistic style for your thumbnails
I thought I was going to die when I watched this movie. Literally as soon as I exited the theater there was a lightning storm overhead. As a Godzilla fan I would say the film was perfect I loved every shot. I had goosebumps the whole time. Literally watched my whole childhood play out before my eyes and for those who have problems “seeing” the monsters just buy an LG OLED 4K TV and watch the 4K version. You are able to see the smallest scale on Godzilla’s body no matter how dark it is. Every nook and cranny is visible. Fucking Chad tier movie. I’m equally as hyped for Godzilla vs Kong.
0:04 my right ear really enjoyed that
Now THIS is how these films should be done! Thank God for today’s technology. Even as a kid, I quickly tired of the “man lumbering around in a rubber monster suit” kiddie genre.
My favorite film of 2019 and i would say its a 8/10 or in this score a five in a half star
Obviously there are fair criticisms to be made, but I saw this film in the theater and LOVED it. All of the sacrifice and determination both by man and monster, on top of multiple epic large scale battles. Great movie!
Even if you've done making review of all movies with Godzilla and Gamera, you can still do reviews to other monster movies from Toho films like Varan the unbelievable, Gorath, Atragon, Dogora, The war of the Gargantuas, Space Amoeba, King Kong escape, Frankenstein vs Baragon and many others or not just from Toho, you can do reviews to other films with monsters.
@Daniel Stark I just forgot that he did about the two, thanks for reminding me.
This is unironically one of my favorite films of all time. I adore this movie, warts and all, and will gladly watch it anytime I'm given the opportunity.
Man I was expecting a 20 something video lol still awesome work my man
I was happy that the big g had more screen time!
I love this movie for one very simple reason, it made me smile like a kid and remember why going to a theater for big screen action is truly a special experience.
It’s flawed, but I’d be lying if I said they hampered my enjoyment.
Awesome movie. As a 53-year-old Godzilla fan I feel like I have waited my whole life for this kind of movie. I wasn’t disappointed at all.
I love your channel so much it’s so chill
It’s a sloppy movie, but it is a lot of fun and an incredible visual spectacle. If you’re a big fan of Godzilla there are a ton of winks, nods, and easter eggs to the franchise throughout the movie.
Bear McCreary also did an incredible job with the score, it really accentuates the film.
I agree with most of the criticisms of the movie, even just cutting back on all the unnecessary tertiary military/Monarch characters would’ve improved the narrative quite a bit.
I would’ve also wrapped up the Russel family storyline prior to the climactic battle.
If the constant cutting from the action for these characters had a pay off it would’ve been fine, but unfortunately it doesn’t and there’s no emotional scene of them reuniting as a family. We don’t even see Maddison and Mark get a scene together once they’re reunited despite the reunion being an emotional thrust for the film.
Still, a solid G-flick that is basically a big-budget Hollywood version of the early-to-mid 60’s Showa era movies.
I will never complain that we got the Toho 4 in a movie like this!
Noble Gas How is it sloppy?
Cheek Slapper I think I mostly covered that in my OP.
All the stuff I cited impacts the story, script, and pacing of the film. It tried to give screen time and lines to all these unnecessary characters and (IMO) it hurts the film and staggers the flow.
Without all that stuff it would’ve been much more focused and flowed a lot better.
Plus, I would’ve cut some of the cringe from the forced jokes. That gonorrhea line was pretty terrible.
@@noblegas7073 good joke felix
If we are looking at the entire franchise at face value, only a tiny handful of "Godzilla"-Films are true masterpieces. But almost all of them are *fun.* KOTM is fun, simple as that. It gave me the same kind of exitement I got as a kid when watching any of the Showa-era films. For a modern reboot to capture the same sort of exitement its older predecessors possessed is a feat in itself and its something rare these days. For that reason alone, I loved watching this movie.
And yeah, Bear McCrearys' score is utterly brilliant.
Another excellent review, highlighting all the things the film does great (the monsters, the music (oh man the music)) without shying away from the things it doesn't do well (human story time).
I did learn that the main reason we aren't given a lot of extended shots of the monster battles is simply budget. It's _really hard_ to make animation of that quality for extended shots (the biggest benefit of suitmation) but they did great work putting in as much as they did.
My big complaint is that if Monarch is supposed to be an international organization, why is everyone who's not a scientist US Air Force?
I do love that the USS Argo is patterned on the male MUTO, showing a clear design inspiration for Monarch's more exotic tech.
i wanna see Destoroyah and Kiryu after Godzilla vs Kong
