Hi I’m Rick Shiels, welcome to my channel RickShielsPGAGolf. This RUclips channel is designed to help you play better golf, also to help you enjoy your golf more!
I specialise in golf club reviews, golf club unboxing, golf club news, golf club head to heads, and all about golf clubs.

I think the biggest thing I’ve discovered this year, as a high handicapper, is simply using the same ball all the time. Regardless of brand, looking down at the same ball every shot, and having lots of fresh new ones in the bag is a huge confidence booster.
Edit: I should add, I’m using the Wilson Staff 50 Elite
Edit 2: I love Ricks content, but one of the huge benefits subscribing to the channel is reading the conversation in the comments. I’ve picked up so many gold nuggets from reading everyone’s input on each video, and I think that’s what golf is all about.

I started using the TP5 at the end of last year, and have exclusively used it for every round this year. Undoubtedly, my game has improved in my second year of golf, which is most likely the biggest reason I’ve gone from a low 20 handicap to a 14 - but the ball provides a feel and confidence that cannot be denied. Great review as always, look forward to your next videos and the results from them bringing my handicap down even further. Cheers sir, you’ve been my swing coach and golf coach from start to finish.

I loved Rick's Pro V, Z Star head to head earlier this year. The conclusion was zero difference in performance however the Z Star is £10 cheaper a dozen in the UK. However if you're handing out the Ammo at a golf day/prize giving the faces light up and you get massive qudos when you pull out the Pro V's. The power of marketing!

I'm surprised you didn't have the bridgestone tour b xs in the mix since that ball with your test was just as good as the pro v1 as well. But I admit the numbers with the bridgestone, tp5 and pro v1 and my personal performance with them is why I don't mind playing all 3 of these balls and just tend to go with bridgestone and tp5 more just because I save a few bucks.

I switched from ProV1 to TP5 and I found it performed basically the same as my PV1. Felt the same putting, wedges, etc.
But now I'm comparing that to the Snell MTBX and MTB Black because id like to go lower spin but also save a few bucks. Smells are 30, TP5s are 50ish. If not, I've been very happy with TP5.
But I think the TP5 feels and plays exactly like a PV1 and I'm a 9 handicap who generates a lot of spin and hits it far. Great ball.
You're right on why people prefer it. Heritage. That's all it is. But people could save a few bucks and get the same performance.

All the premium balls are the same once you play with them for a while. Some fly a little bit further, some spin a little more, some feel softer. Its about knowing the ball.
I actually played with a prov1 for the first time in 2 years (it was yellow, so i had to try it), and was surprised how hard it felt. Not like cheap ball hard(TP5 is the current gamer), but it was a noticeable difference. I really like soft marshmallow feel, some people hate it.
I would say pick it off feel. They will all score equally well once you get used to it. Whatever ball you think is the best is going to be the best ball for you. Unless you really need distance, 3 more yards with a 6i for example is irrelevant. If you're confident you will play better regardless of skill level.

Does it go as far? Yes.
    Spin as much? Yes.
Is it just as good but cheaper? Yes.
Will Rick be using it then?… no. And in there is the real answer to this question. People are creatures of habit and once you’ve found a good thing, it’s hard to let it go. Ask Rick, he’ll still be using the PV1 balls.

In my opinion, unless you’re a scratch golfer or pro, there’s no reason to spend $50+ per box of 12 balls because your level of play won’t be able to validate the technology in the ball. There’s plenty of mid-tier balls that offer good feel and control for $25-40/dozen.

From an unbiased perspective, I think everybody benefits from a better ball. Who gets the most spin near the green? The better player. Therefore, the worse player needs a ball that spins well near the greens, IE a tour ball. 10+ hcps chips on more holes than they hit the green, so greenside performance is key.
Apply the same logic for wedges and switching them. Reality is that the midhandicap golfer maybe benefits the most from a good ball and new wedges. Think about it... 😉

Reason I use the v1x is cuz it is a all in one. Highest spin out of all golf balls, and fastest ball speed. No trade off. I also like it since it takes a big hop forward first on the green after which it will spin. The v1x has more spin and speed than the v1, but the v1 takes a smaller first hop

I’ve yet to play with a Pro V1. However, I have played with both the TP5 & Tiger’s Bridgestone XS golf balls. The TP5 to me has a softer feel especially when it comes to chipping & putting. The Bridgestone is a bit heavier/harder golf ball but gives me on average an additional 10 yards of distance on my drives, woods, & long iron shots. I still go with the TP5 over Bridgestone because I like the softer feel of the TP5 as it has helped me reduce the # of putts I take & over shooting on my chip shots. Will have to try out the Pro V1 when I have money to burn to spend $50 on a dozen golf balls.

BUT, I ran out a couple weeks ago and before I could get my hands on another box, I bought a couple sleeves of Titleist AVX and wow! I hate to admit it, but I noticed an immediate difference. and fell in love with them in only one round. I'm a 5-6hcp but spin it pretty high so that AVX really helped. Now, to get back to work so I afford the $50/dozen cost. Keep up the great work Rick.

The spin from the wedge is exactly the reason lots of good golfers don’t play the ball.. you speak to any professional and they don’t want a ball that rips back 10yards.. the Titleist are more consistent with the level of real life spin they produce.. I’m a 1 hcp golfer and have played Pro V1’s for years and over the last few weeks have tested ProV1, vs V1x vs TP5 vs TP5X and the most notable thing was (only my findings) was the Spin on both TP balls was almost uncontrollable, and distance off driver could vary by yards from different balls from same sleeve.. I was most impressed by the 2021 ProV1x and have just bought a dozen more to play with over next few rounds.. to see if they can knock ProV1 off the perch.. 👍👍

It comes down to marketing and staff players’ influence. There’s simply no other explanation.
I am a custom fitter and I can honestly say that we are trained to be fitting our customers/clients for the proper ball while we also fit them for clubs. Most players, skilled or otherwise, have no idea why they play the ball they do or if it’s even beneficial for their game. When we ask what they typically play, their response is almost always a “Titleist ProV1”. After watching them hit for an hour, the mass majority of them have no business spending that much money on a box of balls, let alone on one that is actually hurting their game or doesn’t serve the right purpose. They buy them because they see endless commercials for them while watching televised PGA Tour events that are backed by tour pros who have previously won. And while that’s understandable evidence, they lack the education necessary to make the right decision. That’s not to say they aren’t great golf balls, but it’s a classic case of “monkey see, monkey do”.

    • @jordanyoung2772
      @jordanyoung2772 3 года назад +1

@@jamesflood7985 That’s hard to say without actually seeing your numbers. It depends on spin rate, launch angle, and ball speed. What do you play now? If you’re someone who just grabs the cheapest ball you can find or collects balls from your local pond, I strongly recommend doing some research based on what kind of player you are and consistently playing the same ball for a season. Figure out what it’s giving you and what it’s not (soft/hard feel, greenside spin, off the tee, etc.) and narrow it down accordingly.

@@jordanyoung2772 I'd argue that higher handicap players talking about feel is absolute nonsense. If you aren't consistently striking the middle of the face, the difference between a pro v1 and a cheaper, lower spin ball is going to be near nothing. Pretty easy answer. Pro V1 is so consistent from year to year. That cannot be said with any of the Taylormade balls throughout history. And they cost the same per dozen, BUT, Pro V1 are MUCH cheaper at the start of the season when you buy 3 dozens and get a 4th for free, which they have had for every year the last 10 years or so.
