Apart from the words "jou" (you, singular) and "julle" (you, plural), there is a 3rd word "u". In most European languages you have the "hoflikheidsvorm" (polite form). "Your Highness, can I help you?" (U Hoogheid, kan ek u help?). "Ladies and Gentlemen, may I have your attention please?" (Dames en Here, kan ek u aandag kry asseblief). When you pray to God, the word "U" (you) is spelled with a capital letter, and when you talk to people, you spelled it with a small letter, like in "u".
The Afrikaans word "deur" should be pronounced with the teeth hidden. When the lips are open and you can see your teeth, the sound will be wrong (like in "dear").
This is great1 I really liked the story, for those of us who speak German it gives us a chance to pick up other things outside of what you taught us. I have a feeling us German speakers could learn this language very fast. Dankie!
I'm Dutch and i can understand literally everything :D but when they speak fast i have to sit up straight hahaha. But then again, if i speak in my regional accent from Brabant then even Dutch from the North cant understand one bit :)
When a person speaks Afrikaans slowly, clearly, and pronounces the words 100% correctly, most people who knows a Germanic language should understand that person. But when he/she speaks a "slang" Afrikaans, it will become a very difficult conversation.
There is no correct way to pronounce afrikaans. Every region pronounces the language differently. My dialect sounds like spanish and we don’t pronounce our words anywhere near the “proper” way.
There is a new girl coming to my school in a few days from South Africa who doesn't speak English. I really want to learn Afrikaans to communicate with her!
I wasn't aware that there existed any Afrikaans speakers that don't know English here in South Africa. My guess is that she either speaks Zulu or Xhosa primarily if she can't.
Afrikaans is the easiest of all Germanic languages. If you start with German and learn it properly, and also have a little knowledge of English, you should master Afrikaans in a very short time.
If there's anyone available around who could help me with learning it, it'd be extraordinarily appreciated. As of 25/11/2019 I am officially learning Afrikaans.
Just remember: The letter E in Afrikaans is never pronounced A - like in the English word "acknowledge". E in Afrikaans is like E in the English word "extreme". (Ek, dek, gek, werk, merk, vlerk, klerk, sterk, vrek, kerk, are all the same. You never pronounce them as "acknowledge" but as "exstreme").
I agree with you as far as ek, dek, gek, and vrek are concerned. But werk, merk, klerk, sterk, and kerk are indeed pronounced with the "ack" sound. I'm from the Cape.
Ek het 'n vraag oor jou aksent. Ek hoor "Ak" as jy "ek" sê. Waar kom jou lekker aksent vandaan, as ek mag vra? Dankie vir die video mevrou, ek leer dag vir dag.
The pronunciation in this video of the word "julle" is wrong. This person says "jille" in stead of "julle". When you pronounce the letter "u" in Afrikaans, you have to open your mouth only a little bit. When you open your mounth too much, so that one can see your teeth, the sound becomes "jille". Try to hide your teeth with your lips and the sound automatically changes from "jille" to "julle".
Ik begrijp alles, horen en lezen gaat goed, praten minder,ik word gehinderd door mijn kennis van het Nederlands. In het Nederlands betekend, Verschoon mij,dat je een nieuwe onderbroek wilt, haha, lol
The pronunciation of "ek" in this video is also wrong. The sound should not be in the back of your mouth, like in "acknowledge", but in the front of the mouth, like in "extreme". Ek = extreme (correct). Ek = acknowledge (wrong).
In modern Afrikaans (the language spoken by young people since the year 2000) there are many errors. People tend to become lazy. Those who live in big cities speak a lot of English at work, then they are too lazy to speak Afrikaans properly.....or they don't know how to speak their mother language at all. Those who can still speak and write Afrikaans properly, were born before 1970. The younger generations were not punished at school for making mistakes. Terrible!!! * In order for foreigners to learn a proper Afrikaans, listen to Afrikaners older than 50, and read publications older than 50 years. Avoid modern Afrikaans, because it is "slang". * Young people don't know how to pronounce VOWELS (A E I O U) in Afrikaans. When they want to say "ek" (the word "I" in English), they say "ack". When they want to say "pa" (father in English) they say "pô" (like in paw-paw). When they want to say "huis" (house in English), they say "haais", like in hide. * Sometimes I go out of my way to avoid modern Afrikaans, as it hurts my eardrums. conversations
Thank you for trying to let the world know about Afrikaans, one of the world's 3 youngest and easiest languages. But, I would suggest: Before making an official video, make sure that all words and all pronunciations are correct. (Be carefull; the Afrikaans you hear on Afrikaans television is not always good Afrikaans. The socalled Afrikaners on Afrikaans television don't know how to pronounce the letters "a" and "u". They say: "Maai pô ann maai mô blaai in ons strônt haaisie baai die sia". The correct Afrikaans should be: "My pa en my ma bly in ons strandhuisie by die see". * The correct pronunciation of HULLE and JULLE and HUIS: "Julle, hulle en huis". Not "jille, hille en hys". Only children from the New South Africa who didn't get physical punishment at school, talk like that. They are a scandal for our beautifull language. * Just remember; the word EK is not pronounced "ak" like in "lack" and "that" in English. That is how the people in Pretoria speak. The right pronunciation is:"ek", like in "example".

Dankie.

Did you try to teach on polytripper?
Afrikaans is the easiest of all Germanic languages.

If oyu start with Dutch it's even easier i guess because we can understand everything apart from malay influenced things like baie
It's a phonetic language, easy to learn.
thank you very much. good job.
this person sounds exacly like my school afrikaans teacher XD
Lol. Oh, my. I hope that's a good thing.
@@TeachMeAfrikaans Are you a native speaker in Afrikaans?
Literally means, “How goes it with you?”
I can understand al of it:)
i cant
Alles is makkelijker als man nederlands spreekt. 😊 En, nee! Nederlands is mijn moedertaal niet, maar dankzij deze taal kan ik afrikaans verstaan.
Did you try to teach on polytripper?
Afrikaans people actually speak better English than Americans, that's what I noticed on my trip to SA.
Oh, wow. That's interesting.

Did you check out sites like Italki or Verbling? Those sites might be helpful to you.
Hey Exenon I am a fluent Afrikaans speaker. Let me know what other languages you speak, we could exchange languages if you game.
@@TheGallery.01-dvh hi can you please teach me and I'll teach you my language as well?
I noticed a third word for "you" is used here as well as jou/julle. Are there rules for using "jy" as an alternative to "jou"?
Are you referring to "jy" as the third word? In most cases "jou" is used as "your" and "jy" is used as "you." But there are exceptions to this.
This is good
