I really missed the "dark" ambience it has in the trailers... It looked so promising, maybe even better than octo expansion. I was really hoping for the usual goofy/funny gameplay but dark hidden lore.
I love side order, but i'm slightly disappointed by the lack of content it has. Not many bosses, the lore is cool but not as interesting as Octo Expansion or Alterna Story Mode. The roguelike is great, but I'm sad it's not exploited at its maximum. No infinite spire mode? Only 30 floors?

Side Order's saving grace was its pallet system. Everything else was sooo undercooked, especially the story and level design.
Also fun fact: The beta "Order Shot" may have actually been a "All-In-One" gun where the chips would make the gun more like each different class. Honestly, I think the issue with Side Order was that is was marketed TOO well. That first trailer is a masterclass at building excitement and mystique, but the problem is that it was so vague it set up the mode to be WAY bigger and cooler than it actually was.
The DLC was never planned to be a big adventure.
After completing the DLC, I looked back at all the concept art that flashed on screen in the first trailer and… nothing is shown that we didn’t, in some way, get. Obviously, some locations and characters look different and grander in the concepts, but that’s the case with ANY concept art, as the developers try to get a feel for the atmosphere and aesthetic. The trailer was just so cool and mysterious and vague that it didn’t give an accurate depiction of what the DLC was going to be, and people (myself included) began to make theories over details that were never intended to be in the game.
Even in the post-release interview, there is minimal mention of any deeper story elements planned. Like, basically nothing. They only really talked about the gameplay, since that was meant to be the focus of this DLC.
In some way, it seems that the developers realized that people were hyping it up to be a lot bigger than it actually was, because then they started walking it back a bit. The mysterious melody from the first trailer pretty much got erased from existence since it made the game seem more mysterious. The second trailer exclusively used songs directly from the DLC and showed off all the important gameplay elements. They released an overview trailer that pretty much told you everything there was to know about the game. But by that point, the damage was already done. The first trailer had already built it up to be so mysterious, that we all just kinda… assumed there was going to be more to the game. But there wasn’t. There never was.
I remember seeing what looked like Agent 4 on the promo art and getting so excited, but looking back, Agent 4 was never planned to be in the DLC. They never directly appear in concept art and the Parallel Canon concept art clearly shows that the leader was NOT intended to secretly be Agent 4. I’m also certain Nintendo saw all the Agent 4 hype spreading after the promo art dropped and went “ohhhhh shoot that would be cool but it’s wayyyy too late to add that”
This DLC (and its disappointment) was really just a tragic case of Nintendo underestimating their marketing abilities, and the fanbase (again, myself included) overestimating the mysteriousness of the trailers.

    • @ShurikanBlade
      @ShurikanBlade  4 месяца назад +3

You see id agree with the first part but companies dont usually if ever advertise concept art. That would be false advertising at that point. I cant recall a single other time ive seen a company advertise concept art in a trailer and so I understand why people think the stuff that they showed us was gonne be in the game to a greater extent

    • @legendarybubblegum6475
      @legendarybubblegum6475 4 месяца назад +3

@@ShurikanBlade While I agree that showing concept art in the trailer was definitely not the right marketing call, nothing shows up in that trailer that we didn’t get in the game, so I don’t think the concept art itself can be considered false advertising.
The “false advertising” was entirely in the way it was presented to seem mysterious and lore important.
The only thing that really changed from the first trailer to the final game was the visuals of the Sector, but layout details changing from trailer to game happens literally all the time, for millions of games.
As for your last point, I completely agree! I too thought that the game was gonna be a lot bigger than it was, because of the way that trailer was presented. I theorized and screenshotted the pictures and screamed in excitement when I saw the first trailer, and I was disappointed with the final product. I had really high hopes for the story and I was let down in the end.
I honestly believe that Nintendo wasn’t really sure what Side Order was gonna be when they released that first trailer. They had probably decided on the story and gameplay, but nothing else had really been built yet, which is why they only showed concept art. Like, it took them a year after it was available for purchase for them to tell us a release date, they definitely were working on it on the spot.

As much as I would’ve LOVED to see Agent 4 in the game, I genuinely just think that line from the trailer was default Run Speed Up text that they forgot to edit. Agent 4 hasn’t shown up at all in any concept art that’s been revealed, and even in the Parallel Harmony concept artwork it’s clear they’re only a robot clone, nothing more.
Even though it sucks, it does kinda feel a bit better (for me, at least) to know that they were never planned to be in the DLC at all, rather than have them be a crucial part that got scrapped and taken from us.

This dlc couldve focused on Marina and 8's trauma, but instead, it ended up just being Marina whining about how life keeps changing.
Also, I was a little annoyed when the game alluded to 8 getting his memories back, but, once you complete the game using his weapon, you just get some stupid text from Acht. I don't care about Acht, I want exposition for the character that I've actually been playing as.
This dlc was good and all, but, it's far from perfect. While I don't think it was as good as Octo Expansion and the vanilla story mode, I'm glad that they still made a roguelike for the sake of shaking up gameplay.

I dont think that picture is supposed to be a conveyer belt, its recursion. Its multiple 8s walking the same path, which is often a core theme in roguelikes. I do think these pictures give off an errier tone, but so did the Alterna trailer.
I binged the fuck out of this, its fun as hell, but was also disappointed in it. Thing is... EVERY single player mode in Splatoon has disappointed me storywise, and as much as I like OctoExpansion... I feel the exact same about it as I do Side Order. Awesome set up, hype ending, a fuck ton of levels with no fucking context or importantce in between. The ONE thing OctoExpansion did that put it above 1 and 2s story modes was putting in actual effort into making a final level.
And I also feel the same way about Side Order contentwise as I did OctoExpansion. Its really damn nice that we got more updates after OctoExpansion, but man, wouldnt it be nice to for the people who paid for a single player expansion to get MORE single player updates. Others have said something similar, but if this mode had at least 2 more bosses, an endless mode, and a hard mode, then itd be freaking peak. But even without all that Im not going to pretend like all the fun I had before was all cope, its a dope ass mode.

The message that the world would lose its free will if order completely took over is honestly such a good message that there needs to be a balance between chaos and order.

The premise is cool but the execution is okay at best. What irks me the most is that Nintendo already dropped a game with THE EXACT SAME PREMISE not too long ago. Xenoblade 3 has the exact same story of fearing change but accepting that uncertainty is what living is about and its executed flawlessly. Thats why it bothers me that they do it so poorly here because I've already seen the potential. Anyway if you want to see a great execution of that theme then i recommend playing XC3. Also thank you! Side order definitely was a good dlc, but I think the issue was topping something as astronomical as the octo expansion. And heck, even trying to improve upon the main story mode of alterna in base game. I think the issue is that the first 2 story modes (from 1 and base game 2) had very little amounts of lore other than what was provided through the secret scrolls. Octo Expansion drops and with it comes a whole bout of lore about octolings and octarians, as well as pearl and marina, and the development of this new character, agent 8. There’s a lot more but those are the most important parts, imo. Splatoon 3 rolls around and with it comes another huge lore drop. Return of the squidbeak splatoon, deep cut’s side gig, mr. grizz’s origins and true intentions, and a ton of information about the last few humans that inhabited alterna.
With all that, so much detail and lore for the series, people likely expected side order to be a deeper development into 8’s character with the return of off the hook. The delays and changes the mode went through probably impacted how exactly the characters were explored, but ultimately not much was actually done with it. For the most part, we got information on Marina before/during her big tour with pearl and the development of the memverse, but there’s not really too much to unpack. There’s a small bit about acht and marina and their past together, but there just isn’t much there to make that much sense of. Considering the wait and the hype, I, like many was just expecting another chunk of lore to drop but ultimately not much came of it. I really hope 8’s character could possibly be deepened but I guess we gotta wait til splatoon 4.
Also like most other people are saying, it does feel like there should be a little more to the mode as a whole. If there were more modes or any way to change it up other than using or not using hacks that would make it more worthwhile to play after getting all of ciphers stuff and the color chip badges. I enjoyed it, but like many I believe that it had a lot more potential. Thanks for coming to my ted talk.

The lore was disappointing too. It was literally just "these two are gay by the way!" which is fine but, that was pretty much it. The most lore we were given was when we got to see a glimpse of what life was like as an octoling soldier.
Seeing the first trailer and seeing what we got hurts (and hearing your take of what could've been hurts even more). The DLC could've been so much darker and more interesting. I wonder what happened during development that made them change the direction. I can only guess they chose gameplay over story mid way but even then they didn't fully utilize the rouge like formula and only gave us 3 bosses (apart from the tutorial and final boss).
Maybe it was the switch's limitations. Maybe they just couldn't met the deadlines. Maybe they thought the story was too deep and ambitious so they toned it down. Who knows? Hopefully we get an interview of the devs explaining why it was changed or an artbook containing more behind the scenes of the DLC in the future. But then again that would probably just contain more "what could've been" and we would feel even more robbed.
Ima go write my own fanficton of the DLC now

I do feel like they did play it safe. It felt like everything was just a call back on something prior instead of building upon it. The only real new things were like the Acht lore and thats it

I kinda like your take here honestly. Maybe if we got this other version, they wouldn't have retconned Marina 👀
What she says before Overlorder fights you almost completely contradicts what she said in the in-game announcement for FF, and this really bugs me as someone who was on Team Order. I really feel like, dare I say it, the event might have been flawed due to word choice. A lot of people were so hung up on the word "order" that they didn't pay attention to her dialogue. "Safety and comfort for everyone" should have trump carded anything Pearl had to say :/ but that's just my extremely unpopular and extremely controversial opinion about it lol
Here's to hoping that they handle FF3 a little better lol

yeah it defiantly feels like they gutted side orders story mainly to do with eights character. makes me wonder if their are any hints of the original story hidden in the dlc itself.
also hot take although it does have some cool mechanics when you boil it down the gameplay is just a worse salmon run. I'm sorry

I MADE A REVIEW ONCE AND I ALSO SAID IT JUST FEELS LIKE A WORSE SALMON RUN. Salmon run gets the design right because there is a sense of agency. Theres a timer and a quota so you have to play fast and methodically. Meanwhile side order jsut feels like you have to play safely

@@ShurikanBlade my apologies if i came off as rude. nintendo has a really bad habit of revealing new stuff wayyy too early in development and by the time it actually comes out it’s completely different from what’s been shown. i understand ur frustration but i think you’ve got it all wrong. side order was always meant to be a martix themed roguelite campaign. all the dark, eerie art that was shown off in the first trailer was essentially just concept art. while the hub world was literally all they had

Side Order was straight up bad. I don't know why people try to defend it. This fanbase needs to stop coping and admit that this dlc was not in any way worth it. It could've been the best campaign yet, it had so much potential... but nintendo made it only 30 levels long with each level taking about 30 seconds. Its severely lacking in content, I hope nintendo never does something like this again and goes back to the octo expansion formula because this is literally only 1/6 of the base game's campaign for $30. Wtf
Also side note the final boss is underwhelming asf, this dlc has set the bar incredibly low

I have 1000%ed Side Order and I know a few ways you can have more fun with it.
      1. 1000% it. This means to complete the spire with every pallet, buy everything from the shop, complete every unique floor, and collect all data on every color chip and enemy, and find every badge.
      2. Try a monochrome run. Basically this is where you only collect one type of color chip. Most of the time, you (or Pearl) can become absolutely unstoppable since you are maxing out a bunch of upgrades that go together. Or you can combine multiple color chips that go in different categories, but still work together. You can make an inescapable ink trap that everyone who steps foot in it is doomed, or basically give you self unlimited hyperbombs.
      3. Look for Easter eggs. Ok so there may not be that many, but the ones that I did find kind of put a smile on my face. For example, if you press a on a color chip when viewing your pallet, it makes a little sound. And if you go back to that epic, vibrant battle via that box in the foyer, collect the full spectrum, and press them from left to right or right to left, alternating for each row, you may hear something special.
      4. Challenge yourself. Basically, try to complete the spire with NO hacks (except Risky Rewards) if you do the with Eight’s pallet, you even get a badge for it.
      5. Try a challenge run. You know those bonus tasks that you can do for extra membux? Try to do that, but for the entire run.
      6. Dig deep. From a dev interview, to just looking at the context the game gives you, you can probably find some disturbing lore. For example, did you know that the snow like substance in the Order Sector is ash from incinerated memories?
So yeah that is all I have for you. Hopefully these “tips” will help you enjoy Side Order just a little bit more. Have fun.

You're allowed to not like it and all but your numbers are just not correct, there's more than 30 levels
Also the reason one run is so short is because the idea is that you replay it again and again. Of course you don't have to like that idea, but that is the idea

@Pearl_Blossom I know there more than 30 levels, but the fact that it only takes 30 to beat the game is just sad. And on top of the short and ridiculously easy levels, a lot of the level layouts get reused which gets old and repetitive really quick

@@ShurikanBlade honestly i think it could’ve been saved at least a lil’ bitif they put like 70% more work into making the finale as bombastic and over the top as octo expansion and splatoon 3’s finales. All i can think by the end was “yeah this ending feels hollow, but it’s a rougelike at least, at least i can replay it a whole bunch”.
Only to my dismay to discover that this game literally only has **3** bosses, Enter the Gungeon, Slay the Spire, and Risk of Rain had 3 unique bosses on each level for crying outloud, and it doesn’t take long at all to find exact repeats on missions, it was REALLY worrying to think how much of the variety i squeezed out of the game so fast.
Legitimately the only impressive thing about this game rouelike wise is the chips system, the lucky & drone chips can lead to somewhat creative builds, and a decent few weapons can gain chips that give them the unique perks of other weapons in their class, like turning the splatling into a nautilus, or the brella into an undercover with vanilla brella damage…
and even then, in terms of a game where you have fixed abilities and get stronger through a wide variety of passive effects as opposed to using a wide arsenal of weapons, the items in both Risk of Rain games blow it out of the water in terms of creativity and variety.
