Thank you for the update and testing products. This is what shag rugs and mats do. They are essentially ornamental and not meant for traffic. It was that way in the seventies when they were originally popular with my parents and aunts/uncles so that is why I have never bought one.
This is exactly what I was going to say. All shag rugs do this... I would not expect Ruggable ones to magically be better. Although, I'll admit that I would hold out hope for them to look at least a little better after a wash... but really ... just the way shags are made .. I mean ...like stuffed animals, etc... they're just not gonna look good over time. Particularly something that you are walking on/applying regular pressure to all the time. It's only logical.
Thanks for the review, I was considering getting one of the shag rugs, so this was very helpful. Side note, I have several Ruggable brand rugs, some for 2+ years, I have 8’x10’, 5’x7’, 2.6’x7’, and 2.6’x10’ rugs. They ALL shrink over time, they way I combat this is by trimming down the base pad. I have 3 large dogs, and 2 kids, and hardwood through my house, these rugs get a lot of foot/paw traffic, and get washed weekly. They ALL have curled over time and as afore mentioned they will shrink, the curling you can steam down. (Although I would recommend protecting your hardwood under with something while you do this) They are still worth it to me, I have never found another washable rug that compares...
I do agree with you and identify with the issues of after washing rug reattaching not fitting correctly. It will be interesting as I have contacted company to see what they do! Thank you !
Thanks for sharing! I have the same rug, purchased less than a year ago and only had to wash once but had the same exact results! It’s super matted, no longer soft and plus and doesn’t feel good to walk on. Wishing I bought a more basic rug from Ruggable.
Great review. Super helpful. This is the exact rug I’ve been looking at, and my exact concerns. Thank you. I’ll resort to a lower pile rug, since this doesn’t look ideal!
I had wonderful experiences with my 3 ruggables. My ruggables have been in my home for over a year. They are in my kitchen and family room. So they get a lot of traffic and need to be washed every so often. Luckily, they are dark colored; so, I can wash them only when absolutely needed. I’m so glad I have the option of throwing them in the washing machine. I guess I’m lucky I have not experienced any of the issues I keep reeding about: shrinking, fraying, curling ends. I don’t have the Shag rug, but was seriously considering it. I realize, all those shag rugs have issues after you wash them.
I have this rug too but it is in my daughter’s bedroom near her bed. It gets gently vacuumed once a week and it still looks great! (We have had it for about 15 months.) Not exactly a high traffic area so no matting. BUT it is a high vomit area, as children tend to do and so I had to wash it. It looked exactly like that and was pretty labor intensive to brush and de-frizz after it air dried. Pretty sure I swallowed some fibers and they also got into my eyes. But after that, it actually looks and feels lovely again. It is probably still the best option out there for a fluffy white rug to be placed in a child’s bedroom. Thanks for this review!
I bought the Morroccon Plush rug before my son was born and now he is 3. The rug is FULLY MATTED and no amount of brushing can fix it. I have to admit, I don't know how a rug next to a bed isn't a high traffic area as this exactly where our rug is and it's walked/sat on at least 3/4 times a day, if not more. It gets vacuumed every other week and I've washed it several times. I tried brushing it a couple of times, but I work full time and really do not have time to do this. I'm very disappointed with this and will now need to replace the rug with something else. More than likely not a ruggable. Thank you @ErinLawrenceTV for your review...I'm glad I'm not the only one facing this issue.
Good video and good information. Living through the 70's as a young woman, I got over the shag rug idea quickly, although I do have fond memories aof the four giant foot shaped rugs that ran from the bath to the bedroom. :-D This is sort of ultra shag, more like a super long haired animal skin. Those animals get very matted out in the wild, so it is no surprise yours did too.
Erin, I am taking the leap. My dog keeps slipping on the runners we use on our hardwood floor in the house, so I want to try these. I will take a picture and then let you know how my journey with Ruggables goes. I'm so sorry to hear about the shag experience. I hope you've contacted them, so that at the least they can improve their product for future customers, and I would hope, to help you!
@@ErinLawrenceTV Yeah, it's for my dog. We have hardwood flooring and she slips, so I've had runners in the house for years now, but most of them either don't have something to keep the rug in place, or it flakes off when you wash it, so I'm going to give this a try and see if it works. I'll keep you posted :)
Why avoid their other rugs just bcz you didn't like the shag version? I have 20 of their regular rugs, never had to wash one yet. The few spills and one dog accident were wiped up easily without having to put entire rug in washer. I dont know why this lady feels need to wash her rugs so often. The rug wicks away liquid and doesn't stain. Just spot clean! I appreciate this video about shag rug, I was going to buy but now I won't.
I just bought a shag rug and now just learning about these rakes you mention. Probably should have done more research 🥲 was thinking the ruggable would be an easier to maintain one but I guess not.

Hi Erin, thank you for an honest, straightforward review. Clearly some things DON'T get better w/ age!
Oh man I really wanted to purchase the shag this definitely helped my decision. Thank you so much.
Same!

Great tip about trimming the base pad. Did you just use regular scissors?
Yes, I just used regular kitchen scissors. (I have the regular base pads, not the extra thick ones)
@@ErinLawrenceTV I used regular scissors and it was a workout for my wrists. Couldn't get it nice-looking and straight, either.
I just got a regular ruggable rug & am loving it so far
me too!
Thank you! I was specifically looking at this white shag rug. The matting is a no-go.
VERY helpful since I was about to buy one of their biggest shag rug. Thank you!
Happy to help!

Glad I could help. Thanks for watching!

Thanks for the feedback!
Thank you! I’m looking for a shag rug, but most of them (not just Ruggable) bunch up and/or mat after time.😕
Thanks for watching!
I would not sure a furminator brush on this. Those brushes are designed to cut fur. I would use a slicker brush to help preserve the fur.
I could try that... (but I'm also not sure I should have to. I didn't plan on salon time for my rug. LOL)
Yes! I cringed when I saw it was a Furminator! Those definitely would cut the fibers and make the rug patchy and thin.
Thanks for the update Erin.

Thankyou. You have saved me from wasting a lot of money
Hi erin, is it cheaper to replace the plush part since you already purchased the velcro?
Probably. But I’m over it. It’s poor quality. 😕
Thanks for the honest review.
Not meant for an area where your feet constantly rest or move. I wouldn't be worried about it for a less-traveled area.
I wish I saw this before I ordered mine😕.
I wish I had saw this before I bought my plush Ruggable because I’ve ran into that same problem, and it’s very frustrating
Grrrr... that sucks, doesn't it.
Mine matted too. I had the exact same problems as you. I’m not optimistic about the new “plush” variant either

@Erin Is the "Plush" style rug the same as the shag rug you've described?
Thank you for the review!!
I’m old enough to remember the REAL shag rugs and you had to “rake” it to maintain the great look of a shag
You did!? I had no idea.
I agree. I had the same problem with my shag rug after washing it. I won't buy another rug from ruggable.
:\

Go for it
I was thinking of buying a shag rug from ruggables, but will no longer consider buying. Did you have to pay custom upon receiving the rugs?
No duties. They have it all worked into the Canadian pricing I think.
can you trim the under layer?
No, not at all. A good idea though
Is this the same as the "plush" rugs they have on there website now, or something different?
No, this is different. This is "shag".
I bought the new plush and I have wan into the same problem
@@Dimondz1 The plus matted?
I grew up in the era of shag wall to wall and theses carpets came with a rake.
🤣

Wet dry hair brush from Sally's. Takes less than 15 mins on little to no maintenance.
Hang dry.
Great tip, Michelle. Thanks for posting it. Do you use the brush after you wash, before, or both?
Wow, looks like a mangey dog. Thank you so very much for saving my money.
😆😆
Thanks for the update! Glad I did not purchase one
Thanks so much ! I almost bought this Thankfully did not I will probably just get regular fabric one instead of the shag
Glad it helped you.
Bought a rug, got a pet instead. Didn't know I was getting into the grooming business
All hairy rugs and pillows need to be brushed, this has always been true.
