It was only a few weeks ago that, in all its inscrutable wisdom, the RUclips algorithm suggested I watch your first episode in this series. The rest is history. Thank you, from a fellow 68-year-old hiker who's preparing for his own long walk, after 55 years of dreaming, planning, and spending a few weeks in the woods every year when I got the chance. If I ever get discouraged, before or during my own journey, I'll remember your final video, pull the rain hood up, and get on with it. Peace be unto you.

Rev, that was amazing! Well done Sir!
I’ve been in tears during the last half, as you played your dear family’s encouraging recordings! How Blessed you are, and we so appreciate the sharing of your world and your hiking experiences with us.
I hope in the future, that once in a while, you’ll be able to put up videos of your family and your enjoyment of life back home. Take care🙏🏻❤️

Dear hiking Rev. Now I have watched all your PCT episodes. It was wonderful, thank you so much!!! I reexperienced some of beautiful California (at least that what I have seen then, was there back in 2006/2007) but Oregon has just so many overwhelming landscapes to offer. Your report encouraged me once again hiking along the Alps bow from Vienna to Ventimiglia in the next two summers (I am sixty-three now). Compared to what you did this is just a piece of cake (approx. 2500 kilometres in total) where you also don't need to carry extra weight for camping gear because you always find B&B's, hotels, or mountain huts along the way.

Awesome! I am amazed at how many of my fellow hikers, around our age(68 when I finished 2021), are able to finish these long hikes. You are correct in saying the other hikers encourage and challenge us to be the best we can be and finish along side them after months of grueling travel thru rocks, mud, rain, snow and wind but I believe there is something inside ourselves that contributes greatly to that encouragement. Adversity is something to be overcome, not feared. My hat is off to you sir, you did it! --Quietman

Sitting here weeping as I write! Your tribute to all the people got that started (the tears), and then your wonderful family's encouragement to you. Oh my! You are a very blessed man! This is the first video I've watched, and now I'm compelled to watch the rest of what you recorded! I came across this on the PCT Washington FB page today. I live in WA and did my first backpack trip in July on part of Section H, SOBO. I'm hooked! Just finished the Timberline Trail a few weeks ago! I'm 63 and know that God has allowed this time in my life to explore many more PCT trails! You've inspired me! Thank you for so beautifully sharing your story! Can't wait to see the rest of it (beginning to end).

Thank you Maureen. Knowing that you enjoyed the video, knowing that you were inspired and knowing that you were encouraged to following my PCT Journey has definitely made my day.
You are very blessed to live in one of the most beautiful areas of the country, Washington state. Washington, and especially the northern Cascades was one of my favorite sections of the PCT. So beautiful. Again, thanks Maureen for the encouragement.

Whelp Rev I watched you walk from Mexico to Canada this week. What a grand adventure and you pulled it off in class and strength. Your emotions at the end were heart felt and relatable! Our families give so much to make our dreams come true. Congrats 2 years later! Any insight into a possible AT or CdT thru in the future? You can do it!

    Dear Rev,
Just finished watching your entire series of PCT videos. I can't thank you enough for your kind efforts to record and share your journey. I may never get the chance to hike the PCT, but it was a priviledge to be able to see so many places I've long wanted to visit viewed through the lens of your compassionate wit, wisdom, and inspiration.
I trust that this finds you well, and pray for your health and continued adventures.
    Many thanks,

Well, I just stumbled onto this last video as you finished. I am in awe of you. And like the lady below I spent a lot of tears as you finished, at least in part because this has been a life-long dream to hike this trail and it more than likely is never going to happen. I haven't officially given it up, but every year that passes it becomes more of an unreality. As I said, I am in awe of your accomplishment, and I thank our God for you that He gave you what you needed and what encouragement you needed to see it through. Blessings to you from here.

Oh how I have loved following you along this journey Rev!! I found your videos as you published #31. I was so intrigued that I wouldn’t allow myself to watch your final video until I had went back & watched them all... your entire epic journey! I only have 2 backpacking weekends under my belt right now, but am looking forward to many more adventures in my future, and hopefully section hiking someday on any of the Triple Crown trails (being an Okie, they are all a good distance away, so no real preference!) You are such an inspiration, not only because of the great physical & mental accomplishment, but also because of your spirit and your outlook on life. Like so many, I’m sad that the “Hiking Rev” PCT videos are over, but so glad that they happened, that you are safe, and that you took so much time & care to share them in such an enjoyable manner! God Bless you... keep shining His light! (Almost forgot to congratulate you on the finish, and to say this last video was beautiful, emotional, & perfect! It was a while before I could see clearly enough to type my comments!) 😊

WOW! I watched all your PCT hiking videos because my 20 year old daughter wants to hike it in 2020 and wants me to go with her. I am coming up with every excuse in the book as to why I can't do the whole thing with her. I'm 51 (will be 52), have grandkids being born, a job, a husband, kids in college, and the list goes on....I think I'm doing the whole thing with her. Not because of all the big name hikers doing it and making it look easy, but because you did it. Thanks! Still leading the sheep. :)

Thanks Doreen. I will admit, it was the hardest thing (mentally, emotionally and physically) that I’ve ever done in my entire life. Physically, I’m in better shape now than I was in my 40’s and 50’s. The hardest part was the mental and emotional. But since you’ll be doing it with your daughter, you can encourage each other. When is your start date? Good luck out there! You’re going to have the time of your life!

So, I am thinking of doing the Desert sections between now in then on vacations. Then chunk the rest in a few years after retirement. Current thoughts anyways. As a fellow Baptist and follower of the Lord Jesus Christ. You were a great inspiration to me. Especially as i consider my age and whether or not it would be worthwhile spiritually and in the service of our God and Savior. This is the Day the Lord has made, we will be glad and rejoice in Him! God, Bless!!!

Good luck Brad and if I can help you in preparing for your PCT Thruhike please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Thanks for sharing your story. I stumbled upon your channel, and as a fellow Christ follower who aspires to hike the PCT upon retirement (nearly 20 year from now) I struggle with leaving my wife and church behind so I can pursue a selfish goal of completing the PCT. It sounds like you really thought this through, and if you have a video where you talk through how you reasoned through the process of considering this journey I'd love to see that. Hiking the PCT would give me the chance to experience so much of God's creation, but I wonder how much stress that would place on my marriage being gone for months at a time. I struggle now with whether the time I spend hiking is the best use of my time. Appreciate any thoughts you have.

    • @TheHikingRev
      @TheHikingRev  7 месяцев назад

Those are great questions and great considerations. I greatly missed my wife, kids and grandkids. That was probably the toughest thing about doing a long distant hike like the PCT. I also missed my church family, church services and singing. You have to REALLY commit yourself to finishing the trail or you won’t make it. I hiked solo 99% of the PCT which gave me A LOT of time with the LORD. I often said, “Whenever I’m by myself on trail, I’m never alone.”
I have a video that I think will help you decide about doing a long distance trail like the PCT. I’ll leave the link here. I hope it helps. ruclips.net/video/K2iuG342w-0/видео.htmlsi=ODrD_DMV-niMyL9u

Sorry, but lots of things to say here. PCT video number 23, you got into a rain storm. You have Z packs duplex tent, but I don’t know what year model that you have . My tent is a duplex 2017 model. And at the head and the foot of the tent coming down from the bottom edge of the roof cover, my tent has mosquito netting which on the bottom edge is attached to the floor or bathtub walls. This is to help add ventilation. This turned out to be a design error because it increases the chances of splash back water finding it’s way into the tent through the netting. My tent is still new because I did not make it to the PCT the year I had planned on, but by experience I having over a 1,000 miles of sea kayaking in Temperate Rainforest Climate, and the only way to stay dry there is to erect a huge tarp above the tent extending way out from the tent. Hard packed ground does not absorb water fast, and damp ground absorbs little. water hitting a pool splashes water everywhere including upwards under the roof of your tent, and where you have netting you will get water finding it’s way into the tent. Dixie ran into that in Washington I think on her PCT trip in snow and rain, but she felt she had a hole, but whatever her case was, she was in a pool of water. PCT’ers are having to camp in places well used as camp sites over and over, so water is not going to absorb easily. Zpacks has changed the design of the Duplex to not having any netting at the head or toe of the tent, but the reality of splash back is still present with new Zpacks Duplex or any tent for that matter where there us enough opening for splash back. I have to buy Dyneema and cover up these ends at the head and toe ends on my tent. You always need to consider weather and hardness of ground and low spots where water will collect. An expensive option would be a dyneema 10x12 tarp erected well over the tent in forest areas if expecting torrential rains . Kayaking , it did not matter the weight so we use blue tarps with lots if line. Dyneema would be expensive but light. when you do this, you also always pack up a dry tent, always, which means your bag and cloths are also dry. if you look at PCT 23. you will see standing water at the corner of your tent.
now for the mention of cold ground on video 23 PCT. Check out the technology of the Neolite XTherm grey sleeping mat. I put mine on the sidewalk at 18°f and slept on that, to test the properties of it’s effectiveness. 👍. the reason this mat works is two fold. 1) small area to heat of about 3/4 of and inch. this volume is small enough heat the whole volume without encouraging air to start rotating in circular fashion , like a lake does in the fall and spring called turn over. I had a large blow up mattress once in doors even and it kept me cold because my body had to constantly keep heating up air. The Xtherm mattress keeps the area small, but it also has two layers with a barrier separating top from bottom. 2) the barrier is a silver plastic liner, that reflects energy back. So the bottom has keeps it’s energy and the top keeps it’s energy which is the energy your body heats up, so you get that back. Do you stay warm
I comment on this video because your more likely to see it. good luck.
