Nice you mentioned about audio volume. We were taught that uploaded video's volume should be set at 75% of 'maximum.'' Then the viewer can attenuate or increase volume at will. Nobody's ears get blown out, or neighbours woken up... 😲 (mentioned elsewhere?) Beautiful survey, thank you!
Hello Rev! I'm relatively new to your channel and have only seen a few of your videos but have enjoyed each one. I'd like to mention one of the video effects you've used in the past that I didn't see on this video that I thought was especially nice. It's a shot of you walking down a path and then your figure disappears or "ghosts out", to reappear further down the trail and then ghosts out again, and then reappears again, way further down the trail. It is very effective to point out the passing of time and your progress on the trail at the same time. Really liked that effect and will pass it on to my nephew who is filming his hikes back in Michigan. Thanks for all your info and enjoyable videos!
Thank you Rev Michael. I also came to this conclusion recently. I’ve done the algorithm thing to get likes and follows and it was just hard work. It certainly had results but the pressure of maintaining that engagement took away the joy that motivated me in the first place. So, I decided I would start recording for posterity, future grandchildren, family and friends, etc. it’s a lot more fun even if I don’t get the engagement. I find myself going back to my own channel and enjoying my videos with my family and the people that matter most in my life. Great tips on storytelling and camera techniques Rev. I try to do the similar in my own attempts at storytelling and I love it. Photography is one of my passions so I love sharing the beauty of God’s creation. Music can be very important. Occasionally I produce my own, which I love even if it’s not world class - ha. Often I use music from subscription sites to enhance the story. Well done Rev and thank you 👍 🙏
Thank you! My only hope is that at least one person will receive the help and inspiration that they need from my videos to get outdoors and do what they love to do.
Nice video. Learned some good things. For me, one of the most important things is sound quality. If the quality is poor, I'm done watching and move on to the next video. No point in sharing wind noise, or in forcing me to adjust my volume during a video.
You are absolutely right! I’ve gotten real good at “lip reading” when someone tries to talk in a windstorm. 😂😂😂 Also, either move the camera/phone microphone closer to you when you’re recording or get an external mic.
These are some great tips. Can you do another video about how you edit your videos? This would be very helpful for us who are just starting to do outdoor videos. Glad to see you walking around and feeling better since the heart attack.
Same thing on my mind! And a very good video idea that would be especially helpful to many of us... Personally, I find editing videos even more challenging than actually shooting videos. In fact, I don't edit them because that seems so time-consuming... 😮💨For example, have been you editing your videos on PCT while at the trail towns, 0-days? Was it done simply on your iPhone using iMovie app? How did you ensure you would not run out of your storage space on your iPhone (videos take so much storage space!). Cheers! And thanks for your teachings!
Hi Rev, thank you for your wisdom. That quote from Ecclesiastes1:9 says, yep, you were a Pastor all right! It’s always good to hear Gods word applied to everyday life.
I wish I had your advice when I started hiking. For the first 5 years I hiked many trails and never recorded any of them. After discovering a RUclips channel I was upset about not recording my hikes. Of course now learning some editing skills I had to retrace some of those trails. Lol. My major problem is looking at the camera and not the lens. I've tried many things like covering the phone with my bandana but I didn't like that. My wife says it's very disconcerting to watch my video when I'm looking spaced out. Lol. Now I wear sun glasses. Lol. I'm glad I found your channel Rev. 👍 Very helpful tips.
Thanks for your kind words. I had an advantage in that for 41 years I was a public speaker. As I speak to the camera I imagine a whole room full of people in front of me. Some people find it hard to speak to the camera. You just got to get used to speaking and looking into the lens. I’ve also recorded several college classes so again, I find it easy to speak to the camera. Trial and error is the best teacher.
Thanks. Yea…I’m not a professional photographer/videographer. These were just things I’d learned about recording my hike from a backpacker’s standpoint.
Best advice on this subject I've seen to date. All stuff I learned in school 48 years ago and yet I hardly ever record my hikes with video. If I had kids I would but my sister just suggested I do this yesterday. It sorta distracts me from the hike but maybe some time son I'll decide to do this. Sermons are suppose to set up the background for the subject to walk thru as well . . .
Wonderful and helpful video. I am a new subscriber. I fi d your content very fun an professional. Enjoyed the hikes an prayers for a complete healing of the heart problems. Happy Hiking 👍🥾🥾🙏
Great watching you coming up with more good tips. I will be waiting for the next one. With regards to recording, what often can disturb is bad sound from the location, mainly wind noice. There are small light microphones that can be attached to the cellphone, even wireless, and then improve the quality.
really enjoyed and learned from this, thank you! as a 69 year old woman, I'm quite looking forward to solo hiking around Europe in the upcoming months.
Thanks for sharing Hiking Rev! Love your videos! I would like to add to those sharing their videos on social media, that labeling videos by PCT location, miles, sections, ect...would help future hikers find your videos!
Very helpful, Rev. I've been looking for this kind of content from my Tubers. 😁 Preparing to do my Adventures with Dad this summer and it's more work than I realized. Did a whole trip to the smokes without much documentation and am kicking myself! Do you have movie making recommendations for IPhones and No perhaps? I write but not techy😋. Looking for your Facebook as well. Thank you.
That’s what causes those stupid black or unclear sides on a video ,not being in landscape mode ! The first thing I do when I see a video like that is hit the thumbs down button. Really good advice here. Thanks for posting.
Excellent tips Rev! I've been "considering" being a RUclipsr but can't think of anything that hasn't already been done. Maybe I'll just bite the bullet and start recording everything and keep them to myself, so at least I broke the ice on THAT barrier!
Gregory, most people want to see things that have been done already but through another person‘s eyes and viewpoint. Just make sure that you become a RUclipsr for the right reason and you’ll be successful.
Thanks for the music tip. I'm just starting to record my Palmetto Trail journey and I've got a lot to learn, but accessing and using music appropriately is something I've been struggling with. Thanks
Most helpful, How To Record, that I’ve seen. Yes, I would like to video record my hike for my family. I know guys who hiked and didn’t video the hike. Well, it was great for them, personally; but, it made the hike almost impossible to share. There are some things I still don’t get though. How does one record commentary over several short shots of hiking through, beautiful vistas, and explanation selfies? How does one edit out, placement and retrieval of the camera on tripod, when doing walk through shots? How does one find the “right” music? How is the music recording placed over multiple short shots? How long does it take to do the edits? Does one have to stop, in hotels, to do the editing? What happens to original shots, edited out of the, “keeper video”? There are more video questions. Seems like it can turn into a real chore. Thanks for your help though. Kentucky
Hey Kentucky. Man, you got a ton of questions.😂. A lot has to do with the editing software that you use. I use Apple iMovie for the iPhone. The music that I use comes from Hooksounds.com. As long as you give them attribution then the music is copyright free. I keep the original clips on my phone permanently after I use them in iMovie. I also have the clips saved on an external hard drive as well as in the cloud. When I was on the PCT I would go into a trail town and get all my “chores” taken care of and then the next day I would take a zero and work on my videos all day and upload them to RUclips.
Thanks so much Rev, very helpful indeed. I just started recording my hikes and I posted my first video for my Mt. Kenya Climb ie the 2nd mountain in Africa and going forward I will apply your very smart tips😊
So good to get your tips on this, as I am essentially a stills photographer and would love to do some videos for RUclips! Thanks once again. So useful and informative. Have shared it in two groups I belong to and hope they might bring you a few more subscribers too. Really enjoying your channel Rev!
Great video tips Rev. One question for you and anyone shooting with their iPhone. We shoot iPhone video “scenery” with our forward facing lens(s) & typically shoot our “selfie” shots with the rear facing camera. Would you agree that you should shoot your “selfie” shots with the same lens you use to shoot your scenery, even though you won’t be able to see yourself, so that the recordings are all consistent in image quality? Newer iPhone shoot beautiful 4k footage, but only with the forward facing lens(s) & only 2k (1920x1080) with the rear facing camera. Just a thought. Guess I’ll have to give this a try on my next hike. Thanks again for all the footage and info.
Thanks. I’ve been doing my “selfie” videos lately with the forward facing lens but it’s awkward the way I have to hold it when I record. I just hold it with my hand when I record selfies. The one thing that bugs me is when someone looks at the screen instead of the lens when they are recording selfies. 😡
Thanks Rev! Lots of good info. Your videos are engaging and these tips are useful. I am working on video #5 for a RUclips channel I set up for my adventures. Definitely still learning. Found the camera lens and where to look which seems simple but really does help. One important tip to add is that editing the video is also very important. Having great content is key but also how you edit it together I find can enhance what you have.
Yes. I can’t believe that I left that out. There’s an art to editing…what to include and what to leave out. The more you record, edit and post, the better you get.
Thanks for another great video Heading out on the CT in 2 days, will be thinking of you and hike a couple of miles for you, since you had to pause your trip this year.
Your tips are very helpful. Thank you. You mention a link to a website for copyright free music but I can’t find it by your video the RUclips site. Would appreciate help on locating this. Just .located the tab to see this link. Thanks
I have never given any thought as to creating videos of my hikes for RUclips or other social media sites mostly because I am camera shy. After watching this video, it sure makes me want to start. Just have to figure out how to be camera friendly first.
@@TheHikingRev My son has several mannequins he left here at the house that he used for some music videos back when he was in high school, and he suggested maybe setting them up behind the camera. Lol, I would feel kind of silly talking to them, but I think you're right about pretending that I am talking to someone rather than to a camera. I have several hiking and snowshoeing trips planned and will use those opportunities to practice on overcoming my camera shyness. Thanks for all the helpful tips, really appreciated.
Thanks Rev! I tried editing with iMovies and found it very confusing/difficult but maybe I just need to keep trying. Also wonder what hard drive to use to save video and how you put your video on that? Does RUclips explain how to upload your videos to them? Does iMovie explain how you add music and how to add writing on the video (ie. labeling a mountain or placing mileage for the day etc.)?
Thank you for this information. I will have to try this. Are you just holding your phone as you record this video or do you use a stick. I know nothing about this but want to learn. Thanks
Hi there from a UMC Pastor in South Georgia! I have enjoyed watching your videos and I am so grateful you are doing well in your recovery!! What editing software do you use? And how do you do the editing when you are on the trail?
Hey Mike. I grew up in South Alabama before moving to California. (“Roll Tide”). I can’t believe that I didn’t mention editing. That’s one of the most important things! What to leave in and what to take out. I just use the simple iMovie app on my iPhone. When I did the PCT last year, I would record footage from Trail town/Resupply to Trail town, usually 3 to six days. Then when I got to town I’d get all my chores done (resupply, laundry, shower, eat real food, etc.). Then the next day I would edit all the footage, and upload it to RUclips. I did everything on my iPhone. Fast internet is vital!
@@TheHikingRev That is fantastic! I could pick up on a little southern accent there, my friend! I'm with you on the Roll Tide!! You do awesome work on your IMovie work...I guess I'll have to double down on my attempts. I have tried using it on a couple of videos (not trail vids) and it was a lesson in futility to me. Thanks! Btw...I'm s 3rd career pastor, and serve in the far south end of GA, in Hahira, at the very bottom of the state on I-75.
IMovie takes a lot of trial and error. Practice with it. You’ll like it when you get used to it. BTW..my oldest son is pastoring the church that I pastored for 27 years in the SF Bay Area. And my youngest son is pastor a church just north of Sacramento.
I use the iMovie app to edit all my videos. It’s not real complicated and gets the job done. And it’s free. 😁. apps.apple.com/us/app/imovie/id377298193
Great tips as always Rev. I have just started to add video to my hikes so this was very helpful. Curious if you used an external mic to block wind noise when speaking? Hope your recuperation is going well and hope to see new videos soon. Safe travels my friend.
Thanks Scott. I did not use an external mic while filming in the backcountry but I was very conscience of the wind. I would wait for the wind to quit before I started recording. (There’s nothing more frustrating than to watch someone’s mouth moving and not be able to hear what they’re saying.) I did use an external mic while I was recording at home.
Great info Rev. I am doing PCT this year and am planning on still photos inserted into a digital journal & your suggestions are useful for still photos as well. I've never taken videos while hiking but your video makes me want to try. Your equip list does not include a gimbal. Would you recommend one for PCT (I love saving weight). If you don't use a gimbal, do you attach the phone to your hiking pole for videos while walking? If so, what do you use (or how do you attach?) If not attached to a pole, what/how do you do it? Thanks
Thanks Bruce. Good luck on your hike this year. I tried using a gimbal but it was on the heavy side (even the lightweight ones) so I sent it back home. My phone (the IPhone 12 Pro) has excellent stabilization and 3 lenses (.5x, 1x and 2x). For “walk by shots” all I use on the trail is my phone on a tiny tripod. (I put an Amazon link down below). For “walking and talking shots” I just hold it with my hand or hold the tripod with the phone attached. If you’re truly into saving weight, this is the best setup. Great tips. Your videos are excellent. You know what you're talking about and your positive attitude is an inspiration. Just discovered your channel and I've been going through your PCT series but am somewhat confused about the timeline. Did you get off the trail in the Sierras in 2019 and get back on in 2020? You must have talked about this in the videos and I missed it. In any case, congratulations on the accomplishment.
Thank you Nina. My phone/camera broke right after Glen Pass, Rae Lakes and I had to go into S. Lake Tahoe in order to get a new one. Therefore, I do not have any footage of my trip from Sawmill Pass to Echo Lake. I have a trip planned this Fall from Kennedy Meadows South to Donner Pass/I-80 where I will be recording footage that I missed.
Rev, I’m considering using a iPhone gimbal stabilizer to record while walking to reduce the video shake. Have you ever used one? If so what type? If not, what do you use to reduce the shaking?
Great video. I love making my hiking videos to document my hikes but I can never get the music volume just right. Wondering if you use iMovie to edit your videos and if so, what do you set the music volume level to?
Barbara, I use iMovie. I used to use Film Maker Pro but I found iMovie to be more user friendly. I had problems with the volume getting real loud when I put Photos in the video. You might want to start there. Also, check and see if the music is in the “background.”
Do you think its OK to go on a thru-hike if you don't record it? Like, if you do a long-distance hike, and you don't even bring a camera or don't have social media accounts, then did your thru-hike even happen?
There are some situations where you definitely do not want to put any narration or music in the videos. I watch many videos where the person is recording a video as he walks along a beach and what makes the videos so good is that because of the sound of the people, the waves, and all that stuff, you get the actual feel of being at the beach, especially if it is rather crowded beach. Putting in music and narration and cutting out the sounds would really ruin the feel of actually being there. You want to get the mood without actually having to be there, say at some of the beaches in the Rio de Janeiro area of Brazil and the Mediterranean.
I was once told to use the 3,2,1 rule to back up anything important .Back up 3 times, 2 forms of media,1 offsite..
Great rule and advice!

@@TheHikingRev One of the best videos I've seen on recording a hike... lots of great tips! What software do you use to edit your videos?
@@loreng.tindall1151 Loren…I use iMovie to edit and publish all of my videos.
Thanks for another great video Heading out on the CT in 2 days, will be thinking of you and hike a couple of miles for you, since you had to pause your trip this year.
Have fun on your trip! I wish I could be there with you. One day soon…
Great basic overview. What editing program do you use to put together the clips you record during the day and to add the music?
Thanks. I use iMovie to edit. For music, I use Epidemic Sound. apps.apple.com/app/id1551131470
Thanks Rev enjoy your information and plan to record my next hike one question how did you store all the video footage on your PCT hike....iCloud?
Yes. My phone uploaded my video/photos to iCloud whenever I got cell service.
Your tips are very helpful. Thank you. You mention a link to a website for copyright free music but I can’t find it by your video the RUclips site. Would appreciate help on locating this. Just .located the tab to see this link. Thanks
You’re welcome John.
I have never given any thought as to creating videos of my hikes for RUclips or other social media sites mostly because I am camera shy. After watching this video, it sure makes me want to start. Just have to figure out how to be camera friendly first.
Pretend like your speaking to someone rather than speaking to a camera.
It took me awhile to learn iMovie. You just got to “practice,” play around with it. 😁
Thank you for this information. I will have to try this. Are you just holding your phone as you record this video or do you use a stick. I know nothing about this but want to learn. Thanks
Hey Maggie. Yes, I’m just holding my phone at an arms length. Most people use a tripod or a selfie stick. Try it and see which works for you. 😁❤️👍

Thanks Sue.
@@TheHikingRev What an awesome legacy! I look forward to learning more...about iMovie and about you and your family!
Could you please share how to editing videos or what software you use for .? Thank you
I use the iMovie app to edit all my videos.

You are beautiful!!
Thanks.
Rev, I’m considering using a iPhone gimbal stabilizer to record while walking to reduce the video shake. Have you ever used one? If so what type? If not, what do you use to reduce the shaking?
Hey Dan. I do not use a gimbal on my hiking trips. I use the Apple iPhone 12 which has good stabilization.

Thanks Rev, that’s good to know. Your videos come out very well! 👍
@@TheHikingRev thank you very much!
Do you think its OK to go on a thru-hike if you don't record it? Like, if you do a long-distance hike, and you don't even bring a camera or don't have social media accounts, then did your thru-hike even happen?
If a tree falls in the forrest and no one is around to hear it, did it make a sound?
There are some situations where you definitely do not want to put any narration or music in the videos. I watch many videos where the person is recording a video as he walks along a beach and what makes the videos so good is that because of the sound of the people, the waves, and all that stuff, you get the actual feel of being at the beach, especially if it is rather crowded beach. Putting in music and narration and cutting out the sounds would really ruin the feel of actually being there. You want to get the mood without actually having to be there, say at some of the beaches in the Rio de Janeiro area of Brazil and the Mediterranean.
Vernon…great observation and advice!
