Lush's first gig was only 6 months earlier, and they hadn't even been signed. They were still a noisy punk band playing opening slots at the Falcon. Lush apparently had already opened for MBV (and the Pastels) at the Fulham Greyhound in June of this year, and they had borrowed Colm's kit for a show at the Falcon on Oct 9th because the drummer for the headliners Sun Carriage refused to let Chris use his kit. Miki knew Kev well because he was Emma's boyfriend thru 1987. Emma also had worked for Creation's publicist. And Miki was also a student at PNL where this gig is.
Love the jukebox in the background 😂 That’s how gigs were, no frills, minimal lighting, amps on beer crates etc. Good band MBV, saw them many times live, thanks for sharing this 👍🏼

I'm very curious about what happened with Island Records. Wikipedia states that when they signed for Island they were given a £250,000 advance. They never released an album on Island and broke up shortly afterwards. I know the information on Wikipedia should be taken with a pinch of salt, but if this is true wouldn't they have to pay back that money to Island Records?

MBV were one of the most creative, inventive groups in the world in 1988, admired only by a coterie of music-heads, and performing in the back of a Waffle House for 20 people. This anonymity gave them the time and room to develop into something extraordinary and truly unique.

there are likely hundreds of bands that are just as inventive as this band today -- the issue is that literally everyone is making music & there is so much of it, that getting discovered is nearly impossible. I'm sure 50 years from now, some internet archeologist is going to discover a band from our time that could change the world.

This interview and gig excerpt were shown as part of a short feature on Creation Records on Rapido (BBC2), I think in November 1988. In that feature Guy Chadwick of The House of Love mentions having had success with their album "this year" and there is mention of them having just signed to Fontana. The gig is from the Polytechnic of North London on 11th October 1988.

I rarely see people talking about her genius and acknowledging that she is one HELL of a guitarist and arguably the most important aspect of this legendary band. I think K Shields admitted that they still had a lot to learn about getting their signature guitar sounds at that point.
