To anyone wondering how he survived a mauling with low health: Bear maulings are typically not lethal, because they deal a ratio damage to your condition, reduced by protection. It will reduce your health proportionately, based on your current health, so you can survive a mauling even at 15-20%. What kills you is the bleeding, as bears can also cause double bleeding, quickly draining your health. This video is a good example of how important stims are - it would be impossible to survive the bear attack without the stims, due to the combination of health loss, bleeding, infection and cold damage. Without the stims, he would have died after the third mauling immediately. PS: While extremely rare, a wounded bear can also die while mauling you, causing it to crush you and kill you.
@@jpvielleux I have never had that happen, either, but I have seen it happen to others (with wolves). Rare, though - can't think of any clips that exist of it.
LD said the right thing to after the 2nd mauling. "Should I let him bleed out?" I'd quickly slinked off to a car on the bridge and waited. I don't know about everyone else but I always get goose bumps watching the bear mauling scene. 😄 Thanks to LD and Zak for sharing.
Lol this reminds me one time when I was at like day 80 loper I was in maintenance shed and slept on the wires, then an aurora came and I got electrocuted. No matter how experienced we are we all make stupid mistakes.
i feel the pain... funfact: just around the corner of the bear cave is this lovely little cave/ passage he could have moved back and forth between, harvesting the bear meat, sleeping, eating, regenerating.and on the other side he would have come out above the radio tower/ below the plane crash site. a much safer place (only one patrol-wolf). but like i said...i feel the pain. sometimes the game just wants you dead. in my latest run i just survived 20 days of intestinal parasites... that was so close, especially towards the end.
My jaw dropped the FIRST time he ran after the bear (scared growling stopped), without escape plan, SECOND time again when he went on without a flare-gun (known fact that you drop equipped items when bear attacks), THIRD time when he did't run for the car to the right (let's annoy the bear some more) and after all of that chain of events, a bare-ass frozen dude, far away from base, sunset around the corner, no health, DEAD SERIOUS DECIDES TO SKIN A BEAR!!! 🤯 Luckily for him, run was fresh and it wasn't like 500+ days waste...
My only criticism is how he just stood there after the 2nd attack guaranteeing the bear would maul him again. He even used a stim and just stood there when he knew he didn't have any way to deter the bear. I don't get it. Spend 2 seconds to untrap yourself! That's the only real n00b thing I saw. The rest of the mistakes were ones I could see myself making.
I think bear never kills you. He is telling you to go away from his territory. And rarely even cares enough to look at you. But a wolf is entirely interested in you. Something like that. I guess it is because bear is hibernating and is weak and lazy because and a wolf is just on the edge
actually learned something :) so far i always died on few bear encounters i had, thats why i only now learned you actually loose some tools and such after the attack. Hopefully i can keep this knowledge out of action tho
This is why you try to get away from the bear after a mauling. If you couldn't beat him geared, what makes you think you could beat him sliced up, naked and missing weapons?
you always roll the dice with bears, sometimes they're super easy and sometimes they glitch into you or something random. The thing that surprises me here is how bad the aim is! Especially for a TLD CC. All predators rush you head on and you learn that, as you have to aim off for the arrow drop at longer range, equally you have to aim low at close range, for the little height the arrow gains when first leaving the bow. I must commend the resilience though, hardly fazed and straight back on the horse! TLD is a cruel mistress.
I was playing the hunted pt1 last night, barely made it to a car during s blizzard with that bear on my tail, froze to death in the driver's seat because he wouldn't go away 🥶🐻
That explorable cave leading to crashed plane would be closer and safer hiding spot. BTW, I thought that bear attack takes >50% of HP so I just can't imagine how he could survive 3 of them 😲
Honestly, I'm more worried when I get attacked by a moose. Broken ribs cripple you a lot more than a bear attack. If you have a stim, it should be ok and I don't know if it's due to a glitch but it's already happens than the bear attack me twice without I have time to run away.
I once got stranded at Ash Canyon when I was about to climb the ropes to the mine. Didn't see the moose at all. Managed to kill him but couldn't proceed to climb the rope for that sweet loot obviously. I had to wait days in the cave before the climb scrambling for wood in the area because I didn't want to make a long trek anywhere at such a bad state.
He should have went into the cave that led to the plane wreck instead of trying to get to the trailer. Then it's just a quick jog past the radio tower to grey mother's house.
Glad i found the armor plate, helps a lot with pesky bears :) but nope won't run much with that. Not sure why he did go to the Trailer when the indoor cave was so much closer, but sometimes a simple choice kills you in this game :)
Some people never learn their lessons the first time I guess. You play interloper and hunt a bear like it’s not even dangerous, you get what you pay for.
I don't understand why he did it that way. Hunting MTs bear is the easiest thing, shoot him and if it survives, jump into a car and wait it out. Plus, me seems most people seem to always forget that there is an interiour cave near the bear's cave, connecting to somewhere around the plane crash area. The cave is warm and is a real shortcut to Milton. Why do most people take the long way around - sightseeing, I guess? Edit: additional to the warmth benefit, there are also less wolf spots returng via cave to Milton than taking the long way. And it's a definitely shorter distance than going for the trailers instead.
"If i'm not getting the bear i'm gonna die" (7:44) (c) The man who's clothes are torn into trash by three bear attacks in a row. He's kinda optimistic for such situation as i think. (i understood that i misheard and he talked about moss, not the bear. but it's still a funny situation)

Great vid! Sometimes no matter how prepared you are death is only ever a few seemingly minor poor decisions away, and that’s what I love about it!
You can avoid death. If a wolf or a bear did attack you, minimize the game, right-click on the icon and click "close window". After you forcibly close the game, restart it - you will start from where you last saved. Yes, this is not fair, but it can be a shame to accidentally die when you have already lived hundreds of days.
When the attack animation is ended, the game automatically saves the progression for you. Therefore, this kind of save-scumming does not work in the Long Dark. However, what you can do is hitting the menu button right before getting attacked, then closing the game. Once the attack animation starts the only thing you can do is shutting the game down hard way, such as pressing ALT + F4, during the animation. Even though this is save-scumming, it might save your save file from unjust buggy deaths.
@@averagedoomenjoyer1232 I meant that shrinking the window and forcefully ending the process should be done BEFORE the animation ends, since autosave occurs after the animation ends.
Honestly when he got mauled the second time i was like oh his gonna die now then out of pure luck he didnt then when it happend the third time i was alr there is no way he'll survive that third time is the charm nope then he gets attacked by a wolf and dies almost instantly
I always try to shoot a bear from a range far enough that a hit will cause them to flee, or at least give me time for a 2nd shot. This is where Archery +4 really comes in handy, because if they turn and charge you, the chance of scoring a critical on your 2nd shot can mean the difference between a quick kill and some aggressive cuddle-time instead. The games RNG is enough to kill you directly without also purposely walking into the jaws of death for "revenge", it's entertaining af to watch though 😂🏹
As for me, I'm practicing the round-the-tree method. Dangerous but can work as a last choice. As always, still better to shoot from a ledge no matter how low.

In this particular situation, it would be smart to approach one of the cars, shoot the bear, and then go inside the car. Rinse and repeat until the bear dies or bleeds out. Or, retreat from the area to recover health and repair, then go back and find the bear carcass that should be dead by bleeding by then.
old comment but 99% of this was actually really well played, I think the mistake that actually got him killed was skinning the bear hide. Obviously he did it cuz he had the clothing on his mind and needed to get something else, but I feel like those 30mins would've been enough to get somewhere safer while maintaining that high temperature and sleep for the sake of restoring condition. Honestly, this whole scenario couldve been solved by just having a cup of herbal tea in your inventory- but that's kinda what this game is about
It annoys the heck out of me that they put the Benefit: Warming up RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE HUD. I wish there was an option to put it on the side or in the bottom left/right of the screen.
"Why dfid it not equip my flare gun?" "Where is my Bedroll ?"....clearly not in the mindset XD . Clearly under distres instead of making quick decisions . "Look in your inventory man !" .
Yes. I got mauled by a bear walked away healed almost made it to pleasant Valley rope got stomped by a moose fraction of health left limping to go back to the cabin and moose stomped me again.
A little too reckless, and maybe a little too trigger happy. That bear did not like the taste of human, but the human just kept making itself available. Never fight a bear without a backup plan. Always assume it will be coming for you after you fire. Use vehicles, ledges, fences, and other environment elements for defense. If there is nothing to use for defense, lead the bear to somewhere else, or just leave it alone! Poor guy!
Ye he said sorry that was rather noobish but yo be honest it wasn't, he just went into the whole thing to fast, it he just got faster and panicked but well done to come out of that, shame wolf 🐺 eeeee was waiting for him......
The noobish mistake LD meant was not checking what´s missing after the attacks. We´ve all done it as bow and flare gun makes you invincible😂 . But you do have to get the distance and so weapon choice right with Bears and Moose, they´re rather fast when charging and changing bow to gun and aim takes a surprisingly long time.
To be fair, I really thought he hit the bear the first time, which is why the bear ran. I was really surprised when the bear suddenly turned around. That was when it all turned sour.
