  • Hi everyone, I'm Annabel, and welcome to my channel! :-)
    In this video we are going to be doing a summer update on the Miltoniopsis and how they are faring in the last month of hotter weather the UK and Europe has been experiencing!
    Temperatures have averaged 30°C (86°F) during the day time in my grow room, but at nights it has been staying around 25°C. Humidity has been staying between 60-70% which will be helping them out also. The key to keeping these in warmer environments is to keep the water intake high (for me I use self-watering pots to achieve this) and the water loss from the leaves low (higher humidity helps with this). If you can’t provide high humidity then lots of watering is a must!
    I hope you enjoy this quick update! Let me know down below if you have any questions! :-)

    I love Miltoniopsis. I have only one though. I got it on sale in January and it has beautiful red flowers with a strong fragrance of roses and honey. They did also have a white one and I regret not getting that - it smelled like lilies.
    Now, it's sprouting four new growths, one of which is growing in the middle of all the other pseudobulbs - so not sure what's going to happen there. They're all at different stages so I'm super excited. Last time the flowers lasted for two months. So now I'm expecting sequential maturation and hopefully blooming which would give me months of an amazing show - fingers crossed!

      It depends alot on how established the plants are, 1-2 months usually, can be longer for less established plants or different varieties of the miltoniopsis, I have one that seems to take 3 or 4 months even though it's got a pot full of roots 😅🤷‍♀️ Thanks, I hope you find something useful! 🙂

    You are doing FABULOUSLY! Congratulations! I am hoping to get mine through the heat of the summer. Since mine were recent purchases I have kept them in the air conditioned area of our house. The Phals are in the non-ac portion. Both areas have humidity of 75% at least. Since the “Tonis” are in the cooler room, my watering requirements are far less frequent than with the Phals.
    I am so excited for you with your success with the Miltoniopsis it gives me courage to keep on keeping on. I am especially encouraged with the temps they seem to tolerate.
    When and what might you be feeding and what TDS, etc?

    • @TheOrchidRoom
      @TheOrchidRoom  5 лет назад

      Thanks! 😀 So I basically feed these exactly as in my fertilizing video but monitor according to their growth as they have the most sensitive roots. One difference from that video is that I pH to about 6.5 at the moment for my moss mixes (roger commented he also does this) as the moss is naturally slightly acidic so once in the pot the pH drops to around 6. For my orchids in inorganic media this is a bit different. There was a comment from a lady on Miltoniopsis in that fertilising video yesterday with a very similar question 😄 So when they are in active growth like at the moment it's about 300ppm combined (rain mix, silicone and seaweed). This is constantly available to them as they are in self watering pots in sphagnum so always moist. When in less active growth lower nutrient solution as they aren't absorbing so much so want to make sure no nutrients build up in the pot and burn roots. So I usually stick to 200ppm combination of all in those cases and increase flushing but it's often slightly changing depending on what the orchid is doing 😀

    Rogers of Rogers Orchid purchased 2 Miltoniopsis from Burnham's they basically come from the same place yours did both of them had a virus. He made a video when he was repotting and then his treatment for them. I wish you luck and hope yours does not have it.

    • @TheOrchidRoom

      Hi there, his had fusarium which is a fungal infection and basically blocks up the water and nutrient supply of the plant when it starts to take over. I treated mine with a systemic antifungal when I got them just in case but during repotting I checked and they do not have fusarium. You can tell by the classic purple ring in the rhizome which was completely absent in mine fortunately 😄

      Hi there. Thankyou for checking but mine do not have it 😄 Roger has plants from the same supplier yes but there were hundreds of these bought by Burnham from the Eric Young foundation. A portion of these may have contracted it (Rogers obviously did somewhere along the lines, probably at the Eric Young foundation itself... ) but it obviously didnt pass to all of them because mine do not have it which was a massive relief. I can assure you I have checked mine especially following rogers video and preventatively treated beforehand anyway when I first got them in March. It is something you can check for and mine do not have it. I never share water anyway.... 😀
