  • Autumn down under - a selection of footage from the trail cameras in May 2022. After a wet, mild summer populations are booming - friends and foes alike. The cat situation has worsened considerably - it's a huge concern. At least the dingoes are keeping the feral pigs on the move.

      Hello Demi, thank you for watching and sharing your thoughts. We also have 3 domestic moggies, who enjoy the outdoors from the safety of their netted cat run. We live a strange dichotomy of loving our pets, but despairing of the feral cat population.

      Hello Raini, yes it is a really vexed problem, isn't it? The cat problem causes deeply bitter debate within any community, rural and urban alike. Having originally evolved in a desert environment, they really are well adapted to take on the Australian bush, and the only natural check to their population is goannas, who occasionally snaffle an inattentive kitty.

      @@GubanaNatureRefuge cold but kind. The birds are not singing and I saw one lorikeet sheltering from the rain in a clump of eucalypt leaves outside my window. I’ve often wondered if the animals feel the cold… I think they do. But perhaps not too much? I remember swimming in the Derwent, out of my mother’s reach, with other 8 year olds. We all turned blue and were amused, but not uncomfortable. Maybe the animals are the same? What do you think?

      @@didntlistendad I think it comes down to their adaptation range - the locals here in South-East QLD seem entirely unfazed by the cracking frosts we are having at the moment, but the unusually early frosts which extended further up North to Mackay can cause frostbitten ears and even mortality in populations not equipped to deal with cold, like the little red flying foxes

    As far as I'm concerned, as soon as a 'pet' cat leaves its owners house, it behaves exactly like a feral cat... sardines work for me 😋

    • @GubanaNatureRefuge
      @GubanaNatureRefuge  2 года назад +3

      Hello Tas my friend, how is winter treating you? Sardines worked for us initially (but they had to be sardines in tomato sauce - weird?) but all we seemed to achieve in the longer term was to remove the stupidest cats, thereby increasing the average intelligence of the remaining population. The traps now serve purely as territory markers, for the cats to catch up on the local gossip by exchanging face jam and body fluids. If only the goannas figured out that the cat traps are a great place to lurk in ambush...

    • @GubanaNatureRefuge
      @GubanaNatureRefuge  2 года назад +6

      Hello Etanz, the feral cat problem is extremely vexing. Trapping is certainly not working for us - it simply created a selective pressure by removing the stupidest kitties, thereby increasing the average intelligence of the remaining population. It also feels like removing cats is like taking a bucket of water from the ocean - more pour in from the neighbouring properties to fill the vacant territory. We do notice a lot less cat action on the cameras when the dingoes are around, but the dingoes are infrequent visitors, following the pig sounders that pass through from time to time. We have looked into the Felixer, but found the expense unjustifiable, because it would be an ongoing cost rather than a one-off, and we could not sustain that level of spending in the medium to long term www.scimex.org/newsfeed/felixer,-the-grooming-trap,-works-to-control-feral-cats

      @@GubanaNatureRefuge wow that’s really interesting of a read, really cool how the felixer is able to tell what’s a cat or not and use their grooming against them to keep the poison isolated. Maybe if you took donations to help keep your plot of land regulated with a felixer.

    So many species who came to personally teach us about them -- how thoughtful!
    Autumn varied so much across Australia, there were many beautiful moments, many uneasy, and hope which will continue through winter. Our precious biodiversity, adorably represented in a dense-little package, must persevere far beyond, and it is hopefully what we will be seeing more of in the near future until a little bit further, when we can all be happily content! (As an optimist)
    In Tasmania, what the former federal environment minister couldn't do, perhaps the new one can?
    Change is very important and serves a vital function in many parts of nature. Some negative change is sustainable, and there is a lot of swaying change, and some transitioning change in general (law of conservation of mass?).
    For the sake of keeping things balanced, we'll get the positive a little bit ahead to counterbalance all that negativity.
    Maybe even the dingoes of the past (thylacines) will make an unexpected comeback, and some natural order can be eased back into place (a lot else needs to be done there, for us to live cohesively with that curious nature! It can be done, just a bit of commitment and gumsucking).
    Hmm, much to do, much to do ... the more I think the more my brain tingles! I think that's a good thing, but it can be overwhelming for my marsupalian thinking-muscle (though I don't believe it is right to categorise animals by intelligence necessarily, as long as they feel or evoke as much, they all deserve respect and care, even those strange hairless bipedals).
    I do like the sound that pied currawongs make, but we have more black ones down on the island, and they make what may be a raucous racket in groups, or a very cute chatter alone. Perhaps I should learn their language, then I think I'd gain the thought-power associated with learning other modes of communication, like Ruthenian or music.
    I'll demonstrate... "mer-uh -- mrrrruaaah!" That means "uh-oh -- no gruuubs!" (paraphrasing)
    Oh, there is a strange-looking seed on the ground... "oh-bwah" (not words, signifying picking up), and "mmm" (oh that's just the other bird who got to eat the single grub)

      Hi Betula, agreed - after so much rapid destructive change over the last 200 years or so, let's hope that the recent political changes bring a tiny zephyr of hope and positive change? The comparatively recent arrivals (dingoes) are certainly only a substitute for the original apex predators lost - the Thylacine and Thylacoleo carnifex (marsupial lion) lost from the Australian mainland with the double blow of continental drying and the devastating arrival of the ultimate apex predator - homo sapiens. Currawongs both delight and horrify me - on one hand, they are incredibly intelligent and have a range of beautiful songs and whistles, but on the other hand they remind me of velociraptors with their piercing gaze and remorseless quest for live prey.

      @betula2137 2 года назад

      @@GubanaNatureRefuge I'll have to change my imitation then...
      "RAWRRRR, GRRR CRRAAWWW" (approaching deliciously tasty-looking flesh) "ooh, wwhoop-woo" (pretending the bird has found nothing) "Zcrueysysgwyu" (making an unworldly eldritch screeewwwoop upon seeing the terrible ropemanship on the trap done by a pesky lesser being)
      Yes, I am really hopeful though hehe, the return is near :)

    • @GubanaNatureRefuge
      @GubanaNatureRefuge  2 года назад +3

      Hello LH, controlling pigs by trapping was comparatively easy and effective, when compared to cats. All we seemed to achieve in the longer term with the cat traps was to remove the stupidest cats, thereby increasing the average intelligence of the remaining population. We are struggling to find solutions. I have heard recently that there is a bloke out west with a dog trained to scent track cats and identify their day time haunts - that might be our next line of investigation.
