We attended the glamorous premiere and after-party last night with the cast. The acting was superb! Harry Melling is hypnotic. The musical score by the titanic composer is top notch! Editing, cinematography the best. Costume design excellent. Definitely a labor of love by director Scott Cooper.
Ohhhh how exciting!! This looks to be a minor masterpiece and I love Poe's work and his story is intriguing. Did you have a chance to see Ms. Anderson?
@@elizabethr.110 I didn’t see her. She might not have been there because the more prominent cast came out on stage prior to the screening and she wasn’t among them. Henry Melling (Harry Potter and Queens Gambit), Lucy Boynton (Bohemian Rhapsody), Fred Hechinger (White Lotus), Toby Jones (a million films), Timothy Spall (a million more films), Hadley Robinson (Utopia, Little Women), Scott Cooper (director) and Christian Bale.
Poe was a genius. On his own level. He was so good that now there is some question as to whether or not he was a serial killer. Yikes! I think his work has creeped out a lot of forensics people, who are trying to explain to themselves why he was such a great writer. I do know that a lot of truly gifted people can be a bit mentally unstable. But to label him a serial killer? That's just a tad far fetched. Oh, I can't wait for this! It's going to be off the fishizzle!
Hope this is as good as the trailer suggests. A moody, period-piece gothic occult horror-mystery (with Poe as a character) has everything I want in a film.
Harry Melling getting second billing is another step up in his blooming career. As he's a serious actor, billing isn't really the important factor, much more attention on the part nowadays. Anyway, nice to see his progress as his beginnings as Dursley appeared to be his end as an actor until he went thru a huge physical change and has since been killing it! Bale has also grown in acting circles every year!
Man, it had to be super cold making this movie !!! I almost want to go see it just to be supportive of all those who froze their arsses off to make this film possible !
I am so excited to see this. I was in the same class with the author Louis Bayard one year in elementary school. I've read his novels as they came out, and they have kept getting better. Now there's a major movie of this one! Congratulations Louis!
Slick, moody, tense, dark, edgy, polished film. Impeccable acting. Refreshing in a world full of bubble gum entertainment. Bale is Bale. Just mmagnetic. Every character was so well developed. Beautifully shot too. Definitely not for everyone especially those business zombies stuck to their phones but I loved this work.
Harry Melling's acting was divine. This movie is stunningly beautiful but tragic. If you haven't watch it yet, please do so. You're robbing yourself of a great time if you won't. Kudos to all the amazing actors and team behind this film.
Loved the movie and how things unravel in certain ways….:) For those who love this atmosphere and era in the horror and thriller milieu…might I suggest The Alienist season one. Cold turn of the century murder mystery done amazingly well. Nothing beats blood in the snow by the pale moonlight.
Watching the trailer and thinking why does this look so familiar. And then it dawned on me, it's based on a book by Louis Bayard of the same name that I read many years ago. I wonder if they will go with the same ending and motive for the killings as the book or change things up? Either way will be watching for the cast and to see Harry Melling as Poe.
@@donna25871 To be honest I read it so long ago, I forget a lot of what happens. So I can't give you a clear answer. But it's a good book if you're ever thinking of picking it up. Poe was my favorite part of the book.
For a moment I thought this was going to turn out to be Sylvester Stallone's long-delayed and spoken-of-in-hushed- (or maybe just incredulous?) tones Poe movie... but no. Not yet anyway. But I'll certainly take this one while I wait.
Movie Explanation Christians Bale investigate The Murder And Actually he is the killer Simple but U should watch it it's Amazing movie how he killed them and why 🤔 there is a resion U won't Regret
This movie is not chilling, it is not suspenseful, it is not ominous. I just turned it off after the longest 70 mins of my life. This movie has no clue what genre it is trying to be and literally nothing happens. God awful boring waste of time.
Another movie with no daylight and lots of loud spooky sounds imitating music. No doubt there will be lots of closeups of pock-marked faces, knarly hands with dirty fingernails, and characters in scruffy clothes. Lots of atmospherics in movies are usually disguises for bad or non-existent plots.
Bridgerton or Lord of the Rings don't matter as depictions of history; it would be misleading to suggest that West Point or mid-19th century USA was all for racial equality: One might call it whitewashing history if that metaphor didn't confuse things in this context.
Maybe studios are finally getting it- THIS is the stuff we want to see- spooky, mysterious, atmospheric.
This is Netflix. The opposite in every way to 'studios'.
I would add...intelligent? One can hope :-)

The "Titanic" composer was James Horner, who died in 2015. Howard Shore is this film's composer - who is famous for the Lord of the Rings score.

Gillian Anderson? Yes please ill watch everything shes on👌🏽
So excited! Always happy for new stories that will (hopefully) revive interest in authors like Poe.
