Yep, I got caught speeding - Here's what to expect

- The other day, I received a pretty scary letter essentially telling me that I had been caught speeding, so I wanted to share with you the process that happens afterwards.
Thankfully, I was offered the option to go on a driver awareness course, so this won't affect my license, but it has already made me think twice about speeding and why restrictions are put in place.
There really is no excuse for speeding. It's there to keep you and everyone else safe on the roads.
If you've been caught and received a fine, let me and everyone else know in the comments!

The Unofficial tax
Not necessarily
They say that the only certainties in life are death and taxes but THIS tax is one that you never need to pay. Simply don't speed. Easy solution.
@@smitajky boring

Why should u inform dvla that u went on a course... because doing a speeding awareness course doesn't give u 3 points.. so why should ur premiums go up the folowing year ??? Going on a awareness means nothing then, 🤔 💭 🤔
Not surprised more accidents people watching there speed clock rather than watching where they re going.
Just another form of tax, absolute disgrace we need to have reform I’ve seen their vans parked on the bottom of a hill catching heavy vehicles and lorries going a few miles over the speed limit.
An easily avoidable "tax". It's like describing fines on shoplifters as a shoplifting tax. Although it's unfair to compare the two. Unlike speeding drivers, shoplifters have never killed anyone while committing their crimes.
@@zivkovicable That's not comparable. You're comparing stealing something worth money to going over a speed limit which affects nobody.
Just got pulled over an hour ago and now I’m here watching this 🤣
Did the cop give you a ticket or do you wait for it to come in the post?

@Wade Marco
I started using it but it's a pile of shit!
I got a 99 in a 55 zone (open back road, no traffic). Without help from an attorney I would have been screwed. The attorney saved my butt. Got supervision! This was in the USA.
Car derived van 5 door van with 2 rear sliding windows I've just found out that my speed limit is 60mph on a dual carriageway rather than 70mph which I thought it was here in the UK. Caught by a police mobile camera doing spot on 70mph (what I thought was the speed limit) in a 70mph zone. Just been sent the letter by the police. Now found out that because my total laden weight (I was empty at the time) is over the 2 ton limit, the top speed I can do is 60mph despite at the time only weighing 1.4 tons. Crazy! There goes my 36 years perfect driving record with no accidents, points or convictions...including driving tens of thousands of miles in many European cities including Athens in Greece without as much as a single scratch. Bloody ridiculous.
@@Pwilli-hs6yi Interesting to know. I wasn't even given a driving awareness course or whatever it is called. Just immediately issued with 3 penalty points on my license which seemed very harsh to me. My respect for the police obviously went down a few notches again.
Anyway, just over a year to go now until the points are removed but TBH it's an insult getting them in the first place. It's absolutely obvious the vehicle is not a goods vehicle (Citroen Dispatch (2002)) 1.9 diesel. It was obvious at the time the van was a campervan with a bed in the back, a small porta potty / toilet. A tiny wood stove and a twin gas hob for cooking on. The campervan was so small I could not even stand up in it - there was just about enough room to sit upright on the bed and that was it.
That's what is so unfair 36 years of good driving one lapse of concentration and they have you.
@@mikehopkins4040 Yep well the points run out in January so no big deal now. My trust however in the police remains at zero. That won't change. They want to BS me, when they need help from me for anything else they can go F themselves.
You should have asked for a court appointment to defend yourself. That’s bang out of order and unfair. It’s just a cash cow. Sorry to hear that.
@@chasedwar2Well over 3 years ago now. 3 points no longer on my license. Clean again. Now I stick to 60mph on the dual carriageways.
I did a course a number of years ago, as an alternative to points and a fine for driving without due care and attention ( Oops... was distracted ). Enjoyed the course, and no problems since. As you say in the video, your insurance company needs to be informed if you are given points. Was watching another video on this subject, and it said that the insurance company needs to be informed if you take a course, though I don't think this is the case. Love the cat btw. Stay safe!
Was this in the UK?
@@abdalgondal Yes.
How much was the course?

It's important to remember that some speed awareness course venues are hugely busy. Being offered the option of doing a course doesn't guarantee you a place. The Police will not involve themselves in facilitating a booking. If you cannot book a place in the time limit they will NOT be sympathetic, or offer a time extension.
There's no such thing as a sympathetic police officer wake up.
Got a ticket some years ago. 37 in a 30 zone. Given choice of fine and points or course (more expensive than the fine). Took the course.
There was no lecturing at us at all. We just had to say what happened. Didn't have to tell our names to the others.
Friendly teacher. Excellent course with a test at the end.
The best part was that it was held in the Assembly Hall at the co-educational Grammar School I had attended in the 1950s (but later used by the local Technical College). Brought back some lovely memories, especially of the girls. Hard to think of them now in their 70s and 80s.

A point about the insurance: Some insurers are now asking about speed awareness courses before offering a policy.
Lie
The police give you an opportunity to bribe them by paying and taking the course to avoid points... And they say the fee of the course is for the course not the Police or Treasury. Police Logic:
Victim has been threatened but not attacked - Police response: We can't do anything about it as it hasn't happened.
Driver driving at and alleged speed to keep up with flow of traffic 53 in a 50mph on dual carriageway caught by mobile speed van on flyover, however no accidents have happened nor has anybody else been inconvenienced by that speed...
Police Logic: 3 points & £100 Fine.
We are to trust the camera's and lasers because there's no way they can be incorrectly calibrated or mistaken.
The country is all about fining people and Go Safe or Go Scam as I call them are just cash generators. If they were all about road safety, what's wrong with GATSO speed camera's
that everybody can see and knows to slow down for. The police just want to fine human error. I can recount plenty of occasions where I could be driving 30mph on a road and there's a police car on my tail while I'm dead on 30, pushing me as If I should drive faster (though I don't) and sometimes they speed without the police lights on. I had the attitude before about - "You shouldn't have been speeding then!" But it's not as simple as that when road markings and council signage are not clear, and situations where the speed limits change drastically from a 50 to a 30 etc. In swindon they made the decision in 2008 to remove speed camera's and even when they tried to bring them back 6 years later, the local council there provided evidence, showing that since before the camera's were switched off and afterwards, there was no change in accident statistics. I'm not saying or making excuses for people to speed because yes, speed plays a part in accidents, I'm just saying this country does NOT have the right idea when it comes to tackling this issue. Having been caught before, I do 27 on 30's, 47 on 50's and bang on 70 on the motorway. However then overtaking this even makes me become a dangerous driver if I decide to try and overtake at 70 on motorway. Sometimes you need to go a little faster to get past the other vehicle that refuses to let you merge into the lane you need to be in and it's not always convenient to drop back because then you become an obstruction to the neighbouring vehicles. The law does NOT make allowances for these situations. Speed camera's also do nothing to curb antisocial and illegal driving from people with no licenses or joyriders. There's an insane number of young kids on motorbikes mainly dirt bikes without plates that speed through red lights in broad daylight. Nothing is done about it. A lot of the harsh punishments the police hand out for these minor and non hazardous driving errors of good people that pay for their insurance and register their cars suffer the most. Not to mention the fact that these situations push people to then start registering the cars falsely or driving without licenses and not declaring points to avoid hefty premiums. There needs to be another resolution to this. GoScam are just Cash Gens. One last point, Speed Van's and Speed Camera's are never very rarely as I've never seen them, near school areas where they are most needed to be.
53 in a 50? Nonsense.
1. The alleged speed is always less than the measured speed to account for any imprecision in the measurement. You MIGHT have been actually doing 60 in the 50 zone and your speedo might have been showing 65. You get plenty of leeway.
2. If "the traffic" is all doing 53 in a 50 zone then every single one is knowingly breaking the law and I would favour booking every single one of them until they learn that a LIMIT means exactly what it says.
3. These days with dashcam you record the police who are tailgating and make an official complaint. Dangerous driving should never be tolerated. Not by anyone.
4. People, including judges, DO make allowances for specific provable acts that are intended to increase safety. For example people who cross double lines for the sole purpose of passing a pushbike safely. Just yesterday they announced modifying the law to make this practice entirely legal here. It used to be illegal but no one would be prosecuted for it.
I was doing 154 in a 15(school zone). Hopefully my insurance doesn’t go up.

By the time they let you out of prison I have no doubt that everything will have gone up.

I've just had a Notice through for 36 in a 30 on a Sunday morning 😔 it's a huge road too lol and I've already done the speed awareness course my test was £200 in Leeds ! And you're right it's all about the points
money making scam!!!!
You got caught. Get over it. You might start paying more attention now. I regularly used to drive to and from work in the proper small hours. Literally nothing on the road. But I knew what the speeds were and if I pinched a bit and got caught, well, that was my decision
Completed my four hour course yesterday after doing 35mph in a 30mph.
I found it really educational in parts and totally refreshing. Yes, I was embarrassed to be there but so was everyone else. Half way through we were all a bit more chatty and felt the course valuable. I certainly didn’t want the points after a 37 year clean licence! So, I’m glad I did it... well, I didn’t have much choice really but even so. I’m saying if you are going on one and feel worried, don’t it’s none judgemental.. It’s all kept private apart from they do say you may get a phone call at some point to ask how you felt the course went. Also, you DO NOT Have to tell your insurance company if you’ve done the course.
It does stay on record for three year (obviously) but, again, better then the points.

i got a letter through today for going 35 in a 30, however i genuinly thought the limit was 40 as it was a long stretch of road surounded by farm land. im only 18 and have only been driving a year, and i find it quite hard where i live to drive the exact speed limit as people beep me and drive really close behind me ( I live amongst a lot of country type land ).
The road i was caught on, i sometimes see cop vans sitting, but only in this one spot where they are very obvious, so i really dont know how i would of been caught because I dont know anywhere else they sit.
another problem is they caught me mid Feb time but i got the letter mid april, and it said they had sent me another before and this way my last warning, yet I have not got any other letters. im worried as it says i might lose my chance to get the course if i do not respond quickly, but i didnt get the letter till 2 months later.
In my opinion ( as someone who is an aspiring police officer ) I think the whole speeding thing is stupid. Yes if your going 20-30+mph over, fair enough, thats unsafe and i get why there should be repercussions for it, but when you going like up to 1-10mph over its genrally when your just driving in the flow of traffic or are on a long stretch of empty road. Honestly cars today feels like there trudging along going 30, maybe they sound get rid of 30 zones and bump them to 35.
Maybe its different where you guys live, but near me its long stretches of open roads, and I never see people doing 30, hence why I assumed it was 40 (as there was also no signs).
I hope you become a chief constable, you have the right idea. I'm also unhappy police can prosecute you based on claiming they saw you do something when you actually didn't. There's no balance in power when you and the officer step into the courtroom, having said that, the Police officer in summary offence RTA's don't even need to be present in court. It's ridiculous.
You're probably too young to remember the road safety commercial of a child laying on the road dead. Hit me at 30mph, there's an 80% chance I'll live. Hit me at 40 mph, there's an 80% chance I'll die... Just something to bare in mind regarding your opinion on speeding between 1-10mph as something that should be legalised.
@@ChaseEverything Claiming they saw you do something when you actually didn't?
If you are an aspiring police officer it would be a good idea if you obeyed the law to the letter. & if you do make it, I guarantee you will end up telling someone that ignorance of the law is no excuse. Just because someone is tailgating you is no excuse to speed yourself & tailgate traffic obeying the limit in front of you. Wether you agree with with a certain speed limit irrelevant. There are plenty of laws i disagree with, but I either obey them or accept the consequences if i don't.
@@Only_Fools_and_Audits Yeah, coppers do that! It's true. I had one accusing me of using a mobile phone. He was wrong! The mobile phone was in the passenger seat. I was resting my head in my head against the drivers side window with my elbow atop of door panel.
Got caught doing 66 in 40 the cop was nice about it he mentioned the points and fine with a letter however some people say there’s letters which gives you a choice of either paying fine or taking the course? not sure what’s gonna happen if anyone knows anything? Happened in the UK
The comment section makes me feel better 😂😢
I’ve just returned from holiday to find that I was issued a letter of intended prosecution for driving at 70 in a variable speed limit on the motorway of 60 on my return from my mother’s funeral to get back before my holiday. All the traffic was going at the same speed - I was just maintaining everyone else’s speed. Although I have to accept that, yes, it was in contravention of the variable limit, despite there being no roadworks there at the time anyway.
Anyhow, the notice of intended prosecution does not allow for any driver awareness training. Just merely agreeing that I’m the driver and feeling in my details - so will this be issued later or does this mean I will not have the option?
It’s all corrupt
I think its way, way too easy to pick up points & they're on your licence for 4 years. There are more speed cameras than ever & so many strategically parked unmarked mobile units. As many people say its a form of tax, I consider myself a pretty careful driver who only does about 6,000 miles a year & i'm up to 9 points. In relation to how I've accrued 9 points I think there are far worse things going on in society that go unpunished or un investigated by the Police, like they never got back to me about my stolen car, investigating that doesn't make them money.
If you was going 1mph slower you wouldn't have been done for it!
There has to be a line drawn somewhere.
Are you using the 10% of the limit plus 2 rule?
I drove close lane on motorway as no one giving me way to go right. I just passed my test.

The postal service in Britain is remarkable. Did you receive it ?
@@l.v9879 yes
Cheers mate helped out a lot
Drove around 74mph in a 70 today. I think I slowed down JUST in time but maybe I didn’t idk :/ does the 10% + 2 rule actually exist or will I definitely be fined? Hopefully they’d give me the option of taking a speeding awareness course, I’ve only been driving independently for about a year. Either way it’s a lesson learned
Some people will say the
10%+2 is a myth but it isn’t and while it is only guidance it’s something that all forces are currently sticking to some actually do a little more, plus speedos over read so your 74 was more like 72 you’ll be fine 👍🏻
@@NoBody-gf8ie hopefully. I’ll just have to wait and see if I receive anything through the post. Fining people for speeding is what gets the money in tbf, hopefully the policeman sat behind the camera wasn’t having a bad day nor feeling spiteful for whatever reason
@@RebeccaEdger the police make no profit from speed enforcement so money is not their incentive, the fact the government makes money from it is irrelevant they make money from everything

@@saeeddadgar4212 got a letter from post giving me suggestions on how to proceed with the ticket. i choose to pay £90 and go to do a 4hour speeding course and i will not have points on my licence.
How fast did first letter come? A week after the incident?
In my second year of driving, just got caught doing 40mph in a 30. Any idea if they will give me the course??
Did they give it you ?
@@callumloveridge4556 Update: yes luckily a letter came through the post with 3 options. Take the educational course, take 3 point and a £100 fine or take it to court (which would be silly because I've already signed the letter admitting to it).
How long did the letter take to come
@@aimari2755 actually the first thing you signed wasn't admitting to speeding just that you were the driver at the time of the offence.
@@aimari2755 thanks for this. I just got caught doing exactly the same (40 in a 30). I hope I get the course offer.
Excellent video thank you for explaining it all.
The next time you see someone driving at 30 MPH in a 30 MPH zone and you drive 2 inches off the back of their car to try to intimidate them to go faster ...This is the reason they are doing 30 MPH.... 😁
You got caught speeding (Sorry breaking the law) Here is what you now do...
1) Grow a pair of b/a/l/l/s be a man and "Own it" ..Pay the fine... etc etc
2) Learn from your mistakes
3) Follow the rules of the road in the future...
The days when you could rag your car about like a n/o/b h/e/a/d on a public road in the UK are long gone...
so what happens if you and basically everyone else around you ignored a temp 40 on the motorway and got flashed at 65mph along with everyone else on the road? it was 40 due to “caution” and then it was national again after about 40s but within that time i got flashed, no reason for the speed change, seems like its literally just there to catch you.
In a dual carriageway which was reduced to 30 it was 10pm no one on roads so was doing 50-60mph and got flashed not been sent anything but I think I will , hoping not
I accidentally did 32 on a 30mph road I got flashed from the front on a driving lesson I shit myself I am aware of the speed limit but just rev to get out of lights etc then slow down to check my speed plus loads of traffic 😂 but fingers crossed it’s not too bad I’m only I learner had a really great lesson apart from the flash.
If you got caught in unreasonable conditions couldn't you go to court to argue your case?
I had a news from my company motorway vari speed 40/49 mph. I am frustrated disappointed and annoyed because I have a GPS speed tracking company control, and I always stay in GPS speed limits. I was tired and distracted when made 49 in 40 following the traffic. I think the penalty system is unreasonably abuse the power, because I always followed the limits but was fined for distraction. I can tell that I will be more aware bla bla nla, but if to be honest It really doesn't matter, because we are humans and it is normal to make mistakes, when it is a real mistake but not an abuse. The problem is when authority use your mistakes to abuse the power. I doubt that it would make us "better" drivers, but definitely someone increased cash inflow with "easy money" what we have earned with a hard work. I will vote always against the police and state expenses from now. There are too many useless guys with control duties. They should find some real job,
I got tagged doing 44 in a 30 zone sent the NIP away now am just waiting on a letter to see if i get a speed awareness course are 4points and a big fine 🙂
What did you get
What fine and points did u get?
I just got pulled by a police officer for speeding he let me off with a warning how long does it stay in the system he said something like it lasts 12 months but I can’t remember exactly?
Got done, went to (Awareness speed )course, nearly got kicked out for mentioning pot holes and overtaking cyclists. Because they both don't exist. Certainly in the film(s) and clips they showed...And they start off by saying 'We are in now way connected to the Police'. A pair of (You know whats). Exeter/Kenford June 2024.
what if they dont give options for the course? CAn you please post a video on it or link. many thanks

Obey and pay. It’s a cash cow. Nothing to do with safety. Todays cars and roads are safer than ever.
I got done for 3 points and 100 pound fine for having 4 people in the back 1 day after passing my test. Do I have to tell my insurance company and what will happen will they cancel my insurance?
What happened in the end ?
i just got one today same as you at 57 mph funny i wonder how many other people get it at that speed just over the 55 mph variables speed percentage
In my opinion, the speed limits are way too low. Teach people how to drive and bump up the speed limits, it will be fewer accidents.
There won’t and the speed limits aren’t about the number of accidents they’re about making the the amount of injuries and damage caused when an accident does happen as low as possible.
Can you resend the letter through post office?
Ive had one come through driving with out due care was tailgating overtaking cutting them up then brake testing they said
I really need your advice, i am new driver and today received two speed notice on the same day 3 mn different in times in the letter it says to say who was driving and send it back i am super worried and i dont know what to expect i can’t believe its two letters 3mn different in times it says that i was driving 25mph in 20 zone any advice would be appreciated
what happened? PS. If it is within 3 minutes of each other. Usually that amounts to you having only committed one offence. However that is for a court to decide and you to persuade them
Were you caught by a yellow camera
7 mph over, ridiculous to do somebody for that
What speed would you commence enforcement at?
@@Only_Fools_and_Audits I wouldn't
Most people that speed is a result of a moment of lack of concentration. Everybody has these from time to time. Why though if you get caught shop lifting do you get a caution when getting caught speeding you just get done?
You get a speed awareness course!
@@NoBody-gf8ie So in that case it follows a shop lifter should get a shop lifter awareness case. Which they do not.
I can agree I've only been driving for a year and 4 ish months and my incident yesterday was definitely due to a lack of concentration for a split second near a speed camera (was doing about 31-32 in a 30) so it's my fault really, I understand the dangers of speeding and I'm just hoping and praying that I can do the course because the points are stuck for 3 years and if you get 6 if you're a new driver you lose your license :')
@@paulgranpop536 now your just being silly 🙄
@@raptorb4107 31 or 32 and you will ge nothing as enforcement starts at 10%+2 mph over the limit so in a 30 limit you'd need to be going 35mph and then 35-42 would qualify for a speed awareness course.
You are punished twice points and a fine. They get the dosh you get the points.
Just a quick piece of advice the zoom call only lets you talk for 45mins then you have to subscribe which is alot of money which you have to do in order to take the course on zoom cause it's over 3hours long so I'm going to the local office to take mine they don't seem to tell you this conveniently 😁

i got a court notice and speeding for 101 instead of 70 miles i submitted guilty but i am scared to go to court 😢. what you this any chance i can avoid trail
Was doing 36 in 30 am I Fd. Plus I am a new driver
I am a learner motorbike rider I got court doing 52 in a 40 Do I plead guilty definitely not know Because I know I was doing 38 miles per hour but I need to prove it
You were probably doing 38 at the point you spotted it slowed down and looked at ya speed but it probably got you way before you spotted it
Very helpful.
Thanks.
Right I have got this but nothing for course I’ve got this for first time
You could Write back " I will not fill the form in as I might incriminate myself" , As a camera can not give evidence in court . The correct procedure is a Policeman , pulls you down the road and take your details , and gives a ticket .
Then the registered keeper would automatically end up with a summons for failing to supply. £500 minimum and 6 points.
Clever?
I got the same letter doing 70 in a 60 variable speed limit zone, Don't know how much I have to pay
How long did it take the letter to come
Believe I have been caught speeding today doing 36mph in a 30mph but I was caught at the front of the van and not the back where normally the camera is. I slowed down in time so I wouldn't get caught at the back. Can they caught you from both front and back??
