Before I watched this video, I slapped this sucker on a bass. I actually wanted the Kramer Tape but mistakingly hit the PIE compressor. I already had an UAD LA2A on my bass (which I do 90% of the time) but something in my head told me to mess around with this compressor. HOLY HELL. This compressor is AWESOME for bass. You can compress heavily and still get a bunch of low end. Or you can do a gentle 2-3 dB GR and have it sound more musical than where you left it.Definitely a keeper.
HOLY SHITBALLS! I KNOW this compressor is used for drum buss and bass most of time....but I popped the WAVES L2 on the mix buss to get a good signal going into the REDD17 stereo desk to round out and phatten up the tone and THEN I popped the pie in the signal chain and it just kicked ASS all over! I was STUNNED. Normally dynamics are a pain in the ass with getting that cohesive wall of sound...especially in the mid range to create that energy...and yeah...by itself it wasn't as impressive...but damn it...if you use a few of these plugs together you can get an amazing signal chain I've heard people say they can use multiple compressors in serial...and in parallel...to get a rockin sound but I never quite found a combo that worked for me...and I have them ALL. Fabfilter, Tube Tech, ..you name it. But THIS THING brings some amazingly musical compression and gain without clipping etc. It's really something. People who don't know about this are getting ROBBED.
I love your series here and very much appreciate the demos, but when trying to listen to the effects of any demo, to me anyway, your voice is too loud. As such, I find myself constantly turning the volume up to hear the plugin then having to immediately turn it down as you speak again. The plugin is really what's featured here, so perhaps you could let it be out in front of your voice. Your message will still get across just fine and thank you for doing these.
william mckinney Hey William, Thanks for the feedback. Because all of these videos are from a live online class recording, no rehearsals, no rerecords, sometimes the mix to voice levels get a bit off. Because of latency issues, it is not possible for me to monitor the actual output signal that gets encoded to the video while recording. I monitor a different mix with my voice louder so i will naturally push the music up. Perhaps I will have to revisit this again... Cheers! Mike
I used this on a vocal bus the other day and I was floored by the sound of cohesiveness and warmth.
This is definitely one of Waves' most overlooked gems.
This is my go-to compressor for reggae bass. "warm, rich, creamy" exactly!

Nothing like instant results!

Thanks Mike
It's really good on bass.
