  • GMR is by far my favorite road climb (and descent!) on the east side of LA. It really checks all the boxes for me: Steady climb, scenic mountain views, twisty fast descent, and on a day like today (Memorial Day 2024) the road is closed to motorized traffic but open to cyclists and pedestrians. I'm not sure if it's closed like this all holidays or just the major ones, but in either case it's a very nice feeling to have the road to ourselves.
This time we weren't sure exactly how far up we planned to climb but packed a little extra water, snacks and clothing just in case. We ended up climbing just past Mt. Baldy village before turning back downhill and ended up doing about 45 miles with 5633 feet of elevation gain. If you go this route make sure to stop at the baldy village lodge, to refill water or grab a drink and lunch.
    Road bike check:
    Specialized Tarmac SL6 Sport
    105 mechanical 2x11
Roval C38 wheels with IRC formula HL 700x30
Orucase Mini frame bag (Usually for my gravel bike)
    Cannondale Synapse Alloy
    105 mechanical 2x11
Roval c38 wheels with Vittoria Cross N.EXT 700x30
Revalate designs jerrycan top tube bag (also usually for her gravel bike)
Always appreciate the views! Stay safe out there homies, go enjoy some time outside!
