Where to live in Siem Reap, Cambodia? Ultimate expat guide for 2023!

  • This video will show you everything you need to know about Siem Reap’s different areas. If you are considering a move either from outside Cambodia or from another place in Cambodia, I hope this guide will be helpful. I explore the four sangkats or communes closest to Siem Reap’s city centre and take a look at what each one has to offer in terms of daily essentials like markets, supermarkets, and gyms. Then we go for a little ride around each area and check them out! See what they’re really like on the ground! Which is cheapest? Which has the most expats? Which is the greenest? Which has the best range of restaurants and bars? It’s all here!

    Thanks so much for watching; I hope you found the information in this video useful - apologies again for my pronunciation, particularly of Sala Kamraeuk - I can't seem to get my head around that one no matter how many times I ask locals how to say it and then repeat it back to them. Where would you choose to live? We have lived in Svay Dangkum and Sala Kamraeuk, three apartments in each location. I'd like to try Slor Kram next, maybe after our current lease finishes. Tour of our current apartment coming soon-ish. Check out Julia Haw's channel if you haven't already: www.youtube.com/@juliahaw

    My wife and I spent 5 months there, stuck during the height of COVID in 2020. We were house sitting for an Australian man in Sala Kamraeuk. It was such a surreal time to be there, we were some of the very few foreigners in town, and so many businesses were closed. We visited Angkor Wat and for two days we wandered the temples completely alone, not a soul in sight. Truly magical.

      I think the longer you live here, the less being close to things matters. We both have motos and I can independently get myself wherever I want to be. If you are new to SR and mostly walking, then an area like Taphul with supermarkets and restaurants (the two things you need most often) is best. Now we live in Slor Kram and I like it here because it's quiet and green. WRT leaving apartments, sometimes we left before the term of the lease had ended, and in these instances, we forfeited the deposit. When we stayed the full duration of the lease, we never had an issue having our deposit returned. Landlords understand that people move around as their requirements change and they become more used to living here.

      Hi Ben, yes the 2FA is a real pain. We ended up calling our bank and asking them to remove it, which they did. If I had my time again, I would look for a bank that uses an app for 2FA rather than sending a code via SMS. It just seems so backward when they could use a second party app, or even have it built into their own app like the wonderful ABA bank here does. Thanks for watching!

      @@ForRiel Well, of the many i had fixed and fed, only one is left. I had lived in a nice apt complex in Sala Kamraeuk for a month and there were many property cats. My 1st day i had a visitor sleeping on my bed. $90 a month with AC. Had to move due to being on foot and having to pass a construction site with hungry aggressive dogs to get home. Mornings ok but afternoons were iffy. I have been bitten once and dont wish to repeat.
      I was surprised Luckys stayed open during covid. They always have minimal traffic.

    What is the quality of overall city infrastructure and safety arrangements for electricity, plumbing, safe roads, garbage collection, etc.?

    • @ForRiel
      @ForRiel  6 месяцев назад

      Plumbing can be questionable and therefore can be smelly, but we have good water supply that is very inexpensive. Much of the electricity is not earthed, and it's pretty common to get little zaps from appliances. Having said that, outages are becoming increasingly rare. Residents (and landlords) have to opt in for garbage collection, and it's a private service you have to pay for. If you're away from the town centre, the garbage collection company won't service you unless it is worth their while, i.e. several residents opt in.

      I think for walkability Sala Kamraeuk and Svay Dangkum would be best. Specifically, in Sala K, Wat Bo and Wat Damnak would be best. Svay Dangkum is huge, so it would need to be in the section that is closer to the town centre. I hope that helps!
