What you talk about as space is what I think of as flow. As in the traffic flow, and in the flow of air and energy in the house. It's important to have a very functional traffic flow, but just as important to have good energy flow, as in Feug Shui. I never looked into Feng Shui much, but recently I decided to change the position of the furniture in my bedroom, and did it according to basic Feng Shui [principles. Everyone in the house was astounded at how much better the room functioned and felt, me most of all. To me, space is experienced 3-dimensionally - the width and length of the room but also the height. All those dimensions convey an emotional and/or intellectual expression. Think about those immense cathedrals in Europe. To make my tiny bedroom feel less small, I had to use a very tall armoire and floor length curtains to make use of that vertical space.
