      One thing you can do is to think about how you want your home to look and feel so that you have a plan or a goal to work towards. Think of the mood, colors, styles, and anything else that you like. Just take some time to think about that, and then when you do have a plan, it will be easier to find furniture, etc., that will help you create the look that you are going for. I hope this helps. Excellent video. I just wonder how do you add a complementary color to grey? My master bedroom is painted Agreeable grey with a surly pattern grey carpet with a dark grey and light grey pattern. . My bed is a dark velour headboard and footboard.from West elm. It is 58” tall. I’m trying to bring in a complementary color with my bedding. Grey is not on the color wheel. Also, what size lamps should I use in the 28” nightstands with a 58” headboard? Thank you!

    • @CarolGilman
      @CarolGilman 24 дня назад

      I’m glad you enjoyed the video, and I think it’s really great how you are thinking through everything. One thing you can do is to see if your grays have a bluer undertone or more warmish/yellowish undertone and choose an accent color that is different than the undertone of the gray, which could be any of the colors. It’s just up to you what you would like better. If you would like to work together to answer your questions about your bedroom, I offer online interior design consultations. Thank you for the explanation. My sofa is a sectional that is 109 x 109. However if you measure the inside it’s only 69” On both sides. The corner is 40”. I’m just wondering if a 42 round coffee table is too big. I would be happy to send you a photo of the room. Thank you so much for your help!

    • @CarolGilman
      @CarolGilman 26 дней назад

      I think you would have plenty of room for a 42" round coffee table. You would be able to place the table inside that square shaped area with wiggle room so you could place the table just inside the square, not on the very edge of each side of the sectional, which is nice to not have the table stick-out more than the sectional or sofa. The 18" is a guideline, and you could even move the table in a little. Maybe to help visualize how it would fit, could you measure that out in front of your sectional? You could probably even go a little smaller, around 40". Maybe measure for both sizes and see which one looks and feels the best to you. Let me know what you find out and if you have any other questions. Take care, Carol

    I don’t understand how you got a 52 “ coffee table on the 106” sectional. You said you deducted 18” from each side. Can you explain. Thx.

    • @CarolGilman
      @CarolGilman 26 дней назад

      Thanks so much for your comment! This was a great question. So how I came-up with the 52" square size coffee table was that I needed to figure out how large of a square shape was available. Even though the sectional is 106" overall on each side, I had to subtract 36" (1/3 of the 106") from each side since we don't actually have 106" of space for a coffee table, we have smaller size of an area for a coffee table. After that calculation, that smaller area equaled a square shaped space of 70" ( or another way to think of it is that each sofa side, inside where a coffee table could be placed, is 70" wide.) Then I subtracted 18" of clearance on each side leaving a 52" square shaped area or space for a 52" square shaped coffee table. Let me know if you have any other questions! Take care, Carol

    are pics above a piece of furniture only supposeds to be 2/3 of the width of the furniture?

    • @CarolGilman
      @CarolGilman Месяц назад

      That's a great question! If you want your pictures to relate to the sofa, then the 2/3 the width is a good place to start. The opposite of that is if you wanted to use the entire wall to display artwork. To create a sense of cohesiveness where the art and sofa and anything else in that seating arrangement relates, go with the 2/3 or I recommend placing the pictures at least a couple inches within each side, less wide, than the sofa. It all depends upon the size of the sofa, the artwork, and the entire seating arrangement and how everything works together. I hope that was helpful. Thanks so much. Take care, Carol

    Hello, what to do if I have a door next to the wall? So if I open the door, 50% of the wall is not visible anymore..

    • @CarolGilman
      @CarolGilman Месяц назад

      That is a really great question! There are a couple of ways to go about this and it really just depends on what would make more sense for your rooms. Many times I display art on the entire wall knowing that when the door is closed you'll see the entire arrangement, and when open just part of the display. You could think about arranging the pictures so that you see some pictures while the door is open and then all of the pictures while the door is closed. If the door is always open, then I would display the pictures on the area that you can see. I hope this helps. Thanks so much. Take care, Carol

  • @Sheb24
    @Sheb24 2 месяца назад

    This video was a delight to see! I'm very happy you could do a video on this topic! <3 The point about clear colours make a lot of sense. In my last rental place, the south-facing living room had an accent wall painted a dark teal. It was incredible watching it change with the seasons and weather: from a near-black in the evening, a jewel turquoise in bright sunshine, and a muted blue-grey when it rained. It did so much to the room's atmosphere, which otherwise contained just white walls and furniture. I think, to me, colours containing both warm and cold tones, like teal and green, might be the best suited colours for climates with highly variable weather, as they look good pretty much in any condition. Without dipping into a rant, the lack of clear and warm colours is probably one of the reasons why modern Scandinavian design feels so off to me the moment the sun is absent. Traditional Norwegian interior was characterized by strong primary paint colours and wood types leaning warm (yellow and orange) - and now they have been displaced by modern IKEA, where white, gray and pale woods are the norm.

    • @CarolGilman
      @CarolGilman 2 месяца назад

      I'm glad you enjoyed the video! I think it's lovely how you have this keen sense of color. From your example of the teal wall, I think your suggestion on a mixture of warm and cooler toned colors sound like wonderful choices. Your comment also reminded me of another factor to think about is the landscape and colors around us and adjusting to see which versions will make sense, and also being inspired by colors that were used in traditional styles. I hope that Ikea is reading this comment and can be inspired by your ideas! Thanks so much! Take care, Carol

    How would you choose colors for a home located in the bright sunny desert, but built to keep direct sunlight from making much of the sun from getting into the house. I have very dark corners. It’s so frustrating.

    • @Sheb24
      @Sheb24 2 месяца назад

      Not Carol, but I would perhaps try hanging mirrors on walls straight across windows. That way they catch the sunlight (indirect though it may be) and reflect it back into the room. Perhaps small objects in crystal and glass could also work in reflecting light sources? There's also the option of just layering on multiple lamps around the room, though those may throw their own shadows. Good luck! :)

    • @CarolGilman
      @CarolGilman 2 месяца назад

      It's so neat how we all have different climates and natural lighting! A couple things you could try would be to use softer colors, on larger areas like your walls, since the light that you have I would imagine is very light and bright, and that could be drawing inspiration from the landscape. For your dark corners, have you tried placing a floor lamp there or adding some other lighting? Lighter colors will add more light to the room overall. I hope that gives you some ideas. Thanks so much. Take care, Carol

    Is it OK to use architectural lighting with a bronze finish (such as a chandelier and pendants from the Hinkley Bolla collection) in an open concept kitchen with stainless steel appliances? The adjoining living room has lamps and tables with with warm bronze/dark gold finishes and a Tiffany-style lamp with cream and green glass. It's hard to know how to coordinate everything.

    • @CarolGilman
      @CarolGilman 2 месяца назад

      That's a great question. One way to think about stainless steel appliances is to think of them just as a neutral color, in the background, even though they have a silver finish or color to them. They can even reflect other colors around them. I would think of the entire space overall and what the look and feel it is that you want - overall colors and style. And you can think of your architectural lighting especially, as a an important visual element that reflects the overall look you are going for. If the warmer more bronze finishes work the best for the look of the room then that will make sense and look great. What is the overall look for the space - style and color of the kitchen cabinets, countertops, backsplash and in the rest of the area - walls, fabrics, furniture style etc? I hope that helps. Take care, Carol

    Always fun to see a video on colour from you! Interesting to see comments from others on specific colours (as well as a delightful surprise to see my own comment on orange) - colour is just so personal! Carol, would you be interested in making a video on how external factors such as weather and climate affects colours in the interior? For example, in my corner of Norway the weather is often drab and rainy, and the light gains a grey tone that affects everything inside the house. It's perhaps a bit niche of a topic, but something I experience has a huge impact on colour choice.

      Super. I'm so glad you enjoyed it and saw your comment! I think your topic idea is a great idea, and it's very neat how you notice that your environment and weather affects the colors in your home. Thanks so much for the topic idea. Take care, Carol Everyone ~ Give a thumbs up on this comment if you like this idea too! I did! :), and share your experiences with colors in your home and how the atmosphere where you live affects how they look. Thanks, Carol

    Thank you for your video! Just bought a house and painted our living room “Avid Apricot” by Sherwin Williams with already red-brown stained wood trimmings around the windows and floor boards. Grayish hardwood flooring from previous owners. The trim really pulls the reddish tones in the paint. Not sure what color couch to buy to compliment, haha!

      Wow, that's sounds great. I looked up "Avid Apricot" and what a lovely color it is! And that's neat how the red-brown trim brings out the reds. It seems like the grayish wood floors would add a nice contrast. I think any color would be great for your couch, whether that's deep brown, or gray, or even a deep blue or green. Keep us posted on what you select! Thanks so much for sharing that. Take care, Carol

    I went with a spherical pouf in my living room after looking in vain for a suitable ottoman. I had a lot of angular furniture and artwork to balance out.

      That sounds like a great choice, and how you brought in variety by bringing in a more circular shape to contrast with other items in your room. Thanks for sharing! Take care, Carol

    Thank you for your last few videos, once I get reemployed I really want to shuffle around things in my room, turn my ladder shelf into regular wall mounted shelves and get my space back, and make the design take pathways into consideration as well! Been learning a lot! Thank you!

    Another thing to consider is where you'll be looking at. In that bedroom (8:45) both pathways are clear, but in the original layout when you're in bed, you're looking at the bathroom...

    Green because it's opposite or red. However I liked the orange because it also has a tint or red in it
