One of Nashville's brightest string benders shows off his picking technique and shares the learning curve that was being lead guitar in Don Kelley's band at Robert's Western World.
Our last Rundown with J.D. Simo was eight years ago. Since then, the songwriter, guitarist, and producer has worked with Jack White, Tommy Emmanuel, Luther Dickinson, Dave Cobb, Blackberry Smoke, and even been a friend in Grateful Dead founder Phil Lesh’s band Phil and Friends. Currently, Simo is promoting his most unique, original, and raw album yet, called Mind Control, where he explores Afrobeat grooves and Mississippi trance blues. Simo invited John Bohlinger and the PG team to his studio to look at some new and old friends with strings, cones, and attitude.

Visiting Nashville last month, I went to Eastside Bowl hoping to catch Kirk Fletcher, but found out he had unfortunately fallen ill. JD was filling in and, wow, what a treat! He was rocking his big Gibson jazz box and a Tele. Hadn't heard him play before, but now I'm a fan. Incredible player. And a very nice guy, too.

He has put so much wear on that 335. I wonder if he has acidic sweat?
    Great player!

I have acidic sweat and my guitars look just like that. So my guess would be yes he does. He also seems to be pretty heavy handed you know. Which assists in the wear and tear…. Great player

Do you have to change strings every day you play? That’s the most extreme, I’ve ever heard someone say the acidity of their sweat was.
I’m heavy handed playing certain types of guitars and/or music, but I’m fortunate to not have much acidity in my fingers. Unless I’m gigging regularly, I can keep a set of strings sounding lively and in tune, for quite awhile.

@@CorbCorbin luckily for me I only sweat when I’m working hard. I can keep a set of strings for quite a while with the exception of doing shows. I change strings for every show. But at home I can keep a set of strings sounding good for several weeks and I play daily.
I have a friend who has naturally sweaty hands and he can destroy a set of strings almost immediately. So I know what you mean!
