it's hilarious because while i absolutely adore this game, the first time you ever play this with new folks...the first 30 mins are explaining rules lmfao
Nice job, but Dave didn't actually die at the end. You don't take damage from hearts/suns/rings after Mordor. Those tokens in that scenario are only used to mitigate the events of Mordor, in which y'all got some lucky draws and didn't have to deal with!
Great game, this group makes also many games feel great to watch! :D Merry Christmas GAMENIGHT crew. and have a HAPPY NEW YEAR! Keep up the great work in the new year! I wish you many more successes and good health!
Loved the video. As I have reached my limit of board games its nice to see you playing games I already have. I would like to see more of this. BTW I was laughing so hard at the Merry/Murray exchange very funny.
Not sure how this arrangement came about, but so happy seeing this being played on GameNight! Still one of my absolute favorite games of all time; just a towering achievement of game design by Knizia. Thanks, Scott, for emphasizing the thematic integration, which I agree is very well done here. However, arguably, the main thematic conduit is how the game makes the players feel (fellowship, sacrifice, desperation, joy). I think there was some rules confusion on the Mordor board, though, regarding the life tokens. On the last board, those are not evaluated for damage anymore (they only exist because they are required by two of the events). Also, there are no ring tokens on the tracks because the ring bearer doesn't change. In addition, the exact procedure of destroying the ring is a little different than you have played. With Dave ending the main track (and the ring bearer still alive), the ring gets placed on Mount Doom, i.e., there is no ring bearer anymore. Then the active player rolls for throwing the ring into Mount Doom, which would still have been Dave. If the roll would have killed Dave, Scott would have been the next one to roll, and so on.
Thank you for the comments Michael! It's been a while since we've played the game, and we often lose the game before Mt. Doom, so forgot some of the details on the Ring going into the fire - should have done a little rules refresher!
When my mother commented on the relative canonic use of mithril to save frodo's butt from shelob (I'm not a big lotr buff) I was pretty impressed. Otherwise, In my mind, I treated the hero character cards as sacrifices when they were played. Really added to that feeling of desperation.
I'd love to see everyone on GameNight! and all the powers that be at BGG (such as Aldie) do this more often...bring out a favorite, even though it may be long out of print, and do a video. The open fire-hydrant of new game releases is too large a stream to swallow. Losing the time needed to cover a few extra games that will likely be forgotten in a year or two is something I'd gladly exchange for the chance to see Lincoln's favorite game, Nikki's, Dave's, etc etc
OMG - I love the 'Pickle Riiiick' jersey - So awesome 😄 Love the play through - ordered the game while watching 😀 Wow 2 blanks then Sam dies to help destroy the ring 😀 A fun episode and a great group playing - ty ty for the fun 😄
Love this classic game. We still break it out from time to time and its always a blast. I was only able to find the slightly smaller footprint of the ffg silverline edition a few years ago. I also created my own components for friends and foes expansion which i feel is essential to this game. Glad to see such a fantastic game pulled from the vault.
Love to see some classics covered. Be careful with the Sauron expansion - we played once where we lost before one of the players could even take a turn. That left a bad taste...
This is my first GameNight! episode to watch, and I really enjoyed it! Your chemistry is undeniable, the editing is crisp, and the game looks interesting. I picked it up at a thrift shop yesterday and I'm looking forward to my first play. Thank you so much for doing this!
Never ever seen a 4 player game go this well, especially with Lincoln that far back. Sauron never stays that far to the right of the board in my experience. I feel like some rule was missed but I can't put my finger on it yet. You all had so many cards at the end as well. ...but....there just might be something to that whole "this was the first cooperative game we played and maybe we just didn't know how to cooperate 15 years ago"....
Have not watched an episode in awhile. However, two things made this must watch tv. The original co-op and ALDIE!!!!!!! Aldie and Lincoln are like peanut butter and jelly. Both are good, but amazing together.
I think there have ben cooperative games before this...technically any classic card game like Bridge is a co-op...the old Escape From Colditz game is too
Me too! I got mine for $2.99 at my local Goodwill just yesterday. All the parts are accounted for and in pristine condition, except for the Merry token which I had to super glue back to the stand. How much did you get yours for?
I discovered BGG because of this game. 1:11:23 He WOULD have to roll the die for the Gollum card. If you spend or have to discard *symbols*, you roll the die. If you just discard a card, you don't roll.
While it turns out the Boromeme is true, apparently once they're IN Mordor, one DOES simply walk... and walk, and walk, and walk. After all that, those damn eagles BETTER show up!
End of the game. You don’t have to resolve life tokens at the end of Mordor. And the active player should roll first to destroy the ring. If the die then next player tries etc. loved to see this played. Inspired me to get my copy out :) thanks!
Why does the Mordor board have hearts etc. you can pick up if there's no life token resolution at the end? Not questioning your knowledge of the rules; I haven't read them in years. But what are those tokens used for then?
khtkruse the rules say At the end of Moria, Helm’s Deep and Shelob’s Lair the following occurs (Mordor is different) “ when describing the end of board actions where tokens are resolved. Mordor is detailed under the End of Game section and there’s no mention of resolving tokens there. I guess you still need to collect them to deal with events that may come up.
I believe it is made of resin, but it kinda seems heavy for resin. BoardGameGeek's forums might have more about the pawn. Thanks for the note and for watching. -Lincoln
Good video! Note: Frodo's (Nikki) special ability is he can use any white Hobbit card (not Feature card) as a Joker card. I think Frodo used white Feature cards as Jokers a couple times, but I'd say you still would have won if you'd given the Ringbearer 2 cards after Moria and Helm's Deep.
The four expansions are: Lord of the Rings: Friends & Foes (2001), Lord of the Rings: Sauron (2002), Lord of the Rings: The Black Gate (2002), The Lord of the Rings: Battlefields (2007)
I kept shouting at the screen, because Nicki only had white cards but didn't think she had certain icons! All White Frodo is all Wilds! Man this game was one of my favourites back in the day!
With the option to use your turn to go back one space. Does this pose a loophole in the game where everyone can use their turns to do this until everyone is reset?
Great to see a classic, I’d enjoy more of these in the future 🙂 I have to say I am dismayed by the poor showing in terms of LOTR geeking - some shocking gaps in this geekdom!
GShock112, I buy my hockey jerseys from Geeky Jerseys (geekyjerseys.com). You have to wait for jerseys to preorder to get custom names and numbers but they usually have quite a few with the standard name and number on them. I think the Pickled Ricks are out of stock right now but you can put your email in to get a notification when they are available again. I've done it far too many times.
I like the game and the cooperative aspect, but I have just one question. All the play boards are representing a dark landscape / scene of the movie. Why did the game developpers not choose to have more alternating landscapes, especially including some beautiful ones? It would have given the game much more perspective and would even maken the dark landscapes more powerful in opinion. I mean: Now, it is just black, black, black and…. we turn, oh, again black. Anyone know why?
The game came out pre-movies, so the art really follows an older tradition of Tolkien illustrations, represented here by John Howe. If it helps at all, the master board shows a lighter, more sweeping landscape up until Mordor, and is visible at all times. Also, the first expansion includes a Bree scenario board with beautiful art. The problem is that all scenarios are supposed to depict struggles.
@@AldiePrime For what it's worth, I thought you did a great job. I haven't played or even read the rulebook yet and I was thankful for your presentation of the rules. It's hard to teach a game like this with so many moving parts!
This video shows exactly why I dislike most (if not all) co-op games. The micro-management of some players to other players is _not_ fun and you can even notice the very small slights among friends. Not my cup of tea. (Great video though; not a critique of the video or crew.)
But the player interaction is undeniable, wouldn't you say? Some co-ops suffer from the alpha player syndrome, where one player can control all the action. Perhaps that's the reason you're not supposed to talk about your cards? To mitigate that? I thought these guys did fine, though.
damn that is one fugly FF game, the art/design is so inconsistent XD of course that does not mean the game itself is bad...but still ugh! the iconography doesn't match the actual art at all.
This is the game that got me into modern board gaming. Oh the memories!

Same. I laughed out loud there. "You think that's a ring? I can get you a ring..." LOL
I always like coops, there is something really important to facilitating cooperation between people in a world where the win/loose is the norm.
Not sure how this arrangement came about, but so happy seeing this being played on GameNight! Ahhh, so in that case, I would have healed myself at the end instead of Lincoln... and then it wouldn't have mattered if Sauron moved or not.

4 of my favorite video personalities, all in one place. Happy freakin' holidays.
I remember that one, just last night I talked about this game with my parents (both 74) remembering how we played it a long time ago.

Pulled this out for the first time in 17 years today! Last game was 2003 with Linc, Nikki, Alf, and Chris (81 pts).
Daryl Heffernan such a great game. Thank you for introducing it to us!! Last week I finally bought the two-player LotR: Confrontation.-Lincoln
You don't need life tokens at the end of Modor. The Sun and Heart life tokens are only used for the events in Mordor!

That ending was crazy! Sam took the Ring Bearer to Mount Doom, then succumbed to Shadow as the Ring was thrown in!
