Man whenever Sarah sings she never disappoints. Always spectacular on point and in good form. Her take on this tune is exceptional! I love watching her perform, she was such a great singer>

a rare example of a voice that stands out on it's own. not an instrument from the band but full humanity and sarah doing what only she could do. captivate her listeners and do it like it's not something spectacular. every great singer did jobim but sarah did it in the most unique way. she had the ability to harmonize with herself. she stayed close to the top and bottom of of her key. a beautiful woman.

Oooooo! Thank you for putting this treasure out into our worldwideweb! Those jumps of a 10th that Sarah went into. That's no spring chicken...that's a mature artist with zero fear, knowing her genius, using everything she's got (or not) and crafting with so much wisdom and care. LOVE. IT.

this is my favourite sarah track. most artists treat this song lightly, maybe the wave is gentle and lapping the beach at ipanema. sarah's wave is big, dark and way out at sea. who knows where it will end up. this is artistry. thank you so much for posting this performance.

This is musical genius at it's best! How I miss her. Can you imagine the elation Jobim must have felt at this interpretation? What a gift to Earth and it's sensitive minions :)

She is 57 in this clip...About her 40th year in singing professionally, you tell me any vocalist that at that age and with that many years and miles on their voice that still sounded that good? That is the reason when hearing of her death Ella said, the world just lost its greatest voice... Who i'm I to disagree with the first lady of song?

basso profundo to high c tenor that's what she wrapped around timing, fluting, and a lovingly sexy approach to these greatest of songs from the mid 20th century. none does this like her. then and now she had no equal. she took these songs and made them her own. also, down to earth dealing with leaders and players ...listening to ideas and instructions, sometimes sick and not knowing the music but hearing it once and then pulling off something like this. never the same approach so they always sound new she was born with the voice but then said hey let me reinvent the songbook. and she did just that. a composer could take some hints from her talent and push it in any direction.

Sarah was, as Duke Ellington would say, "Beyond category". There simply are no superlatives to adequately describe her art. Well, maybe timeless. Or perfect!

Butch Lacy, piano {who would later move to Denmark and record with Chet Baker, the great Doug Raney and Swedish clarinet master Putte Wickman} and the truly wonderful bass and drums pairing of Andy Simpkins and Harold Jones - he of Count Basie fame {still touring the globe - well unto pre-Covid times anyway} with Tony Bennett.

@paytonfit Thanks for your comment. I agree. I've never seen or heard a bad performance from her. I've just listed on Ebay one of her rarer concerts from Monterey. She sings an amazing version of The Island from her Crazy & Mixed up albumn. Also a perfect version of Time after Time. If you've never seen that show, check it out.

Butch Lacy, piano; Andy Simpkins, double bass and the great Harold Jones, drums. Butch Lacy went on to live in Denmark and record with Chet Baker and the truly great Swedish virtuoso clarinetist Putte Wickman amongst many others (Doug Raney, too, I seem to remember... Oh - and a great album with Gary Bartz on the SteepleChase label that I especially love...). To the best of my knowledge he has passed on.
