Hands down, the best pipes in the business. Ella was THE queen, and Sarah Vaughn was co-Queen. I saw her 5x LIVE. First time was in 81/82 at Dangerfields in NYC. My friend and I were S.V. freaks. We "splurged" and spent $35ea. We both got dressed to the nines. We were seated way in the back right next to the swinging kitchen door. We thought, "Oh well. No matter. We are HERE". Seconds before the lights went down for her entrance (through the kitchen doors) the maitre'd swooped us up quickly and quietly the THE ringside table. A no-show? Cancellation? Don't know. But we were dressed up, and very cute. So in she swoops upon her entrance in a cloud of LAUREN perfume. That now being a strong scent memory. It was beyond thrilling. Through the 80s I saw her again at Carnegie Hall, the Hollywood Bowl, and twice at The Blue Note in spring 1989. I read recently that during that engagement she was diagnosed with lung cancer. (I remember reading in The NY POST that she canceled her last 2 nights). So.... yes. I saw/heard her WITH lung cancer. Ummm, she sounded fantastic. She died a year later. I once met the great opera singer Rene Fleming who was a HUGE jazz singer fan, S.V. being her #1 favorite. She said Vaughn had the capability to have been an opera singer but had zero interest in all that work! The life of a jazz singer being an easier one, and permitted her to indulge in the things she liked to indulge in. Her stupendous voice will live on forever.
For me Sarah is the ultimate vocalist to learn from.her tone, her range, her breathing, her ability to lead the orchestra without losing them as she invents.
There was no singer like her. Sometimes, she can bring tears to your eyes. And backed by this orchestra, she just soars. To hear her in person, was a thrill I'll never forget.
She was a genius, but also a wonderful lady. She was the author of her own life and success, overcoming tremendous odds to become a revered living legend.
Sunday, April 9 2023...ending the Easter weekend by listening to the Voice "The Divine One", Ms Sarah Vaughan. She will forever be one of my favourite Jazz singers.
Completely effortless in every way...but what strikes me is her infallible diction...every single word is clear even though she doesn't over enunciate. Truly an astonishing artist. Her intonation is also perfect. That's what virtuosity is...the ability to make what is extremely difficult seem easy.
Spectacularly riveting, captivating, entertaining as The Divine Sassy, Ms. Sarah Vaughan' s splendid, velvet, suave, melodic mezzo- soprano voice transports me to the heavenly hemisphere. Serananded with impeccable range, phrasing, breath control, superb diction with ease. Thanks immensely for posting my favorite female jazz vocalist.
She's in a class by herself !!! Listen, Listen all you young, talented singers - she's in full command at all times! So thrilling! Whew! Every time Sarah sings is a Master Class . . . .
The DIVINE ONE...that fabulous VOICE...we will appreciate the beautiful VOICE, but jealous ppl will always dislike beauty...that voice was touched by God almighty
+Cornelis Peters I would concur with your choices of Ella and Sarah being great jazz singers but I would also amend your statement to include Mel Torme and Cleo Laine.
I count myself as extremely fortunate to have been able to see her live 4 times. We shall never see anything comparable in this, or any other lifetime. Her rendition of "Send in the clowns" is one for the ages.
LOVED HER!!!!!!! Love, Love, LOVE Sassy! THANKS FOR THIS!!!! Baby..she was a vocal technician! Played her voice like an instrument. Such vocal control, phrasing, style....and she smoked a lot of cigarettes, lol. What a blessed set of pipes. REST IN ETERNAL peace Miss Sarah! Her Send In The Clowns with Boston Pops and Wynton Marsalis in the early 80's was ASTOUNDING!
That Send in the Clowns gives me chills just thinking about it! Beyond description. Also check out her live in Berlin c '59 singing Funny Valentine. You will never be the same.
The depth of pleasure I get from Sarah Vaughan live is ineffable. Truly s Goddess. I saw her live in Milan, her final tour, I believe. I was illuminated and transformed by the experience. Grazie Sarah, davvero xx
When God addresses all that have lived in the past, those who are in the present, and all that will live throughout eternity, he will use the voice of Sarah Vaughn. No one will EVER COMPARE❤️
I'm jealous of everyone who commented that they got to see this goddess live!!! If only.... 😥😣 But at least there's RUclips. Thankyou for uploading. Man! 2:36 the way she bends the notes and phrases. I'm melting...... She's so smooth! And if anyone commented that they actually got to meet her! Well... Just Wow!!! How to stand before such Glory!!!
Luckily got to see Sarah numerous times 70 in to the eighties great single night in my active concert going years Sarah with huge Michel LeGrand orchestra and chorus Dorothy Chandler Pavilion was beyond spectacular sold out audience gave many deserved standing ovations , anyone there like myself at loss of words to describe captivating evening...Troubadour concerts in small club over a three year period restarting her career were incredible went many times got her autograph in dressing room, great times with the greatest ever...
I have loved her since I was 14 years old. I listened intently to her on my 33rpm vynl. I saw her in person . She sang Caravan and as she hit the high notes the people were standing up cheering. She was fantastic! ----- My sister met her in restaurant ( sitting behind her and then realized who she was) and she said she had just finished cleaning her garage. Sarah was very nice to my sister.
Sarah left us on April 3rd 1990. A day I will remember for as long as I live. I cried like a baby. The only constant in my growing up years. Her voice was like a warm blanket that always made me feel safe and warm. And loved.
I just finished reading 2 excellent biographies written about Sarah Vaughan: "Queen of Bebop: The Musical Lives of Sarah Vaughan" and "Sassy: The Life Of Sarah Vaughan." Listening to her sing is a breathtaking experience. When she sings, it's as if she is experiencing this moment for the very first time. Thank you for posting this video.
I am so happy December 31,2015 and I see and hear my favorite of all time Ms. Sarah Vaughn I have been truly blessed today. Thank you so much for this posting. Tony Dial
Of the unchallenged Trinity of American Jazz Singers (Billie, Ella, Sarah), none were more creative, inventive, daring, commanding than Sarah, whose roots were not in the '30s like the other 2 but in the laboratory of modern jazz that was the Billy Eckstine Band. No one had greater command of pitch and voice projection, but it was her ability to improvise new melodies on the familiar words and chords of the song that defined her uniqueness. On this date, she lags behind the beat and turns the songs on their heads rhythmically. Only one controversial quality of Sarah distances some fans and musicians---her experimental use of vibrato, which some singers dispense with entirely. Sarah overdid it on her Gershwin album, but elsewhere it contributes to the life of her performances. Her career ended with a different, incomparable pianist named Frank Collett (look for her '80s recordings, esp. 'In the City of Lights."
Back when u can go to a concert and here a once in a lifetime voice … and real musicians .. people dressed up and had an adventure .. now it’s all about who is platinum who can hold C sharp for an hour … who is naked …this is era was over once it begun …
The Divine One in sublime form in a wonderful setting fortunate 1970 in to the eighties venues large & small experienced legendary singer too many times to count always extraordinary, wonderful Boston Pops performance great example of her amazing artistry with a voice beyond compare she could sing them all in her own captivating way, miss those wondrous times...
For those of us who really love and appreciate “Sassy Sarah Vaughan “. The sound that emits from her vocal-chords, her sense of timing . Her personal rapport with anything resembling “JAZZ” So when she has a personal invitation to sing with a great and massive orchestra. You had better hope that the conductor, and the entire orchestra. Had better share the respect that a voice like hers demands. Because when they forget, or disrespect. That “muffled sound of her voice “ means that the Boston Pops orchestra. Isn’t the reason why there’s so many bums on seats. She doesn’t need the back-up orchestra. Because she’s the full-package.?!!!
Sarah-tól az első LP-m 1978-ból való (SUPRAPHON Stereo,1115 2687 ZD).Fantasztikus énekesnő, a nagy trióból talán a legjobb.Azóta hallgatom rendszeresen és imádni fogom amíg élek...
Amazing ! Marty Paich arranging ? Another incredible symphonic performance is with Sarah and the L.A. Philharmonic doing Porgy and Bess, a few years later.
I heard Sarah Vaughn for the first time in 1959 and she will always represent the very best to me. Her voice has no limit. What a star.

Sarah's voice can not be replaced. She is truly one of kind.
She's the queen. They call her "The Divine One" for a reason....what a stupendous talent.
They also called her "Sassy".
I miss her so.😢 when ever she was in town, I went 2 see her. Her pianist was a friend of my acting teacher. Oh what joy she brought to us all. RIP❤
For me Sarah is the ultimate vocalist to learn from.her tone, her range, her breathing, her ability to lead the orchestra without losing them as she invents.
Fantastica
Her rendition of Rainy Days and Mondays was just beautiful. I'm still tearing up. Thank you, Sarah.
Her "Rainy Days" is on a whole other level!!!!
Her breath control was simply INSANE!!!!! My GAWD!!!! Love her so!!! Rest well, Sassy.....
You tell no lie! It really is otherworldly!
There was no singer like her. Sometimes, she can bring tears to your eyes. And backed by this orchestra, she just soars. To hear her in person, was a thrill I'll never forget.
Lucky you!
Lucky you.... I was only 2 years old when this concert happened. I wish I could treasure such a beautiful memory...

If there is someone better, I've never heard em!
Yes BB Ann mom name
WOW!! HER VOICE ITSELF IS AN INSTRUMENT, NO NEED FOR INTRICATE MUSICAL ARRANGEMENTS .. JUST HER! 🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡😻😻😻
Hard to believe a human voice could be capable of such phenomenal expression.
The Boston Pop orchestra adds timbre and color with phenomenal musical depth embellishing Vaughan' s voice. Love her scanting!
I've only heard it called scat singing.
Completely effortless in every way...but what strikes me is her infallible diction...every single word is clear even though she doesn't over enunciate. Truly an astonishing artist. Her intonation is also perfect. That's what virtuosity is...the ability to make what is extremely difficult seem easy.

Phenomenal! We used to listen to and watch the Boston Pop concerts every Sunday. Such memories! My dad loved Sarah V.

Sarah's voice is so warm. Sarah has classic elegance in her wardrobe too. Thank you, Sarah Vaughan☺️
What a treasure to see this again! I wish we could find and see Cleo Laines performances with the Boston Pops
One of her signature songs was Tenderly. What a talent she was.
I count myself as extremely fortunate to have been able to see her live 4 times. We shall never see anything comparable in this, or any other lifetime. Her rendition of "Send in the clowns" is one for the ages.
My favorite singer of all.

What a great way to start the concert with a song written by the Brazilian genius Tom Jobim 🇧🇷
The one and only!!! Bravo! Bravo!!!

Oh great I'm reading them right away thanks for the tip!!
So right Kerry. Ms Vaughan "translates" a song more fully than anyone.
I don't like either book. They are not worthy of her genius.
@@jazzinreds Couldn't agree more. And the Leslie Gourse abomination can't even get the date of her death right.
Her voice still gives me goosebumps.
I am Brazilian and I got surprised with the version of Wave writen by Tom Jobim, our great composer.
Re-watching and just as fabulous.
The spice she puts in the notes. Gives a new feeling all her own.
A VOICE OF AN ANGEL ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Amazing singer...goose bumps on RUclips!!! Standing O,!!
Sarah's voice is devine....WAVE is so beautiful.....thank you RUclips.....

Lucky Ames, IA, to have these two in concert.
If she did feel something for you , she was wonderful . But God help you if she did not care for you. She had musicians replaced from an orchestra.
