    I think the moral in the grim version was to avoid arrogance. The father's bragging almost doomed his daughter and rumple's gloating in the forest allowed the messenger to learn his name.

      I agree with both of you, example stories do a better job of guiding folks than telling them don't/do something... I sorta feel bad for Rumplemintz ;) since he did all the work and was not rewarded (I am NOT in support of human trafficking!) though considering when the original story was written, a servant/apprentice could likely have been brought in for quite a bit less then spools and rooms of gold.

      That's what I was thinking. The bragging of the father got the daughter in trouble and the bragging of Rump ended up in his actual death. That at least is what I got from Grimm version. Also be cautious of who you do deals with. There is danger when it comes time to collect. You may or may not be able to pay in the future. She just lucked out because of Rumps arrogance.

    German here. In German it kinda rhymes. Also I’ve grown up with the “creepy origins” . So in the version I grew up with the father was drunk and kinda flexing on the people in this tavern . So this rumor gets to the king who in this type of time is really in need of money. They also say they cut the fathers head of for lying or his daughter or both . He keeps lying cause at this point he knows he’ll die . He rather sacrifices his daughter. Then as you told I just know the detail that all the artefacts she gave Rumpelstilzchen
    We’re from her mother that died. also in the german Version i know the father after is really bitter cause he and his relatives are really poor and his daughter now married the kings son.
    Also pretty creepy: in German the rhyme includes Rumpelstilzchen actually singing that he is planning to eat this child . Good research I just guess in Germany they added more details or maybe some got lost in translation.

    I think the tales moral is, that words have power. to know the name of something that scares you, to call it out, that gives you power over it and reduces it's impact on you, for what we really fear most is the unknown.

    • @alanguages
      @alanguages 5 лет назад +49

      In the past, when someone would find out the name of a demon, then the person would have power over the demon. They could exorcise or invoke them. I am guessing this fairy tale has it's roots in something like that type of story.

    • @shawngoff8557
      @shawngoff8557 5 лет назад +18

      Fear is the unknown, meaning to say that what we call fear is just the brains way of processing unknown variables, with a rational end. Rational being self preservation leading to the flight or fight reaction being activated. The most common fear is nyctophobia, the fear of the dark. We don't know what's in there so our brain says " yeah no I'm cool let's stay over here"

    "The Rumpelstiltskin Problem" by Vivian Vande Velde is perhaps the most entertaining collection of retellings (from the hilarious to the heartbreaking) of this fairytale. She does well to point out, "Why the heck would a guy who can spin a whole room full of straw into gold do it in exchange for a tiny ring?" The short "Straw into Gold" was worth the whole book itself.

    There’s this version I read in Arabic when I was younger that was kind of similar to this and it goes like:
    Once upon a time there was a widow that lived alone with her beautiful young daughter, but this daughter was very lazy. One day, the old widow baked 5 kaaks (some sort of bread) and left them by the chimney to cool off. Her daughter was walking through the house when she saw them chilling by the chimney so she decided to take a piece and eat it. And after 10 minutes she came by for another piece, and so on until all the 5 whole breads were gone.
    When the old widow finished working, she called on her daughter to bring the bread so they would eat together, and that’s when the girl confessed what she had done. Her mother, furious, went out and continued working all the while singing this song whining about her daughter’s laziness (I don’t remember the song but it was something like “my daughter ate 5 full loafs of bread” or something like that).
    After a while, an expensive carriage passed by, and in it was the king of the land they lived in. The young man heard the old widow singing this beautiful song but couldn’t make out the words. So he came closer and asked the lady about those lyrics. The widow, ashamed of her daughter’s laziness changed the lyrics to something like “my daughter made 5 golden like, those weaving things idk what they’re called in one day”. The king, amazed, asked the old lady to send her daughter to the palace and told her that he’s marry her daughter if she could make him 5 of those golden weaving things for one year.
    Skip to when the girl finally arrives to the King’s castle. The king locks her in a room and tell her to make him give of those things for tomorrow or else he’d kill her (romantic much).
    Night came and the girl gave up on finding a way to make those things so she started crying.
    From her window came a little, ugly man that asked her why she was crying and she told him her story, so he made a deal with her.
    Everyday he’s being her 5 of those gold thingies and she’s have three chances to guess his name, if one year passes and she couldn’t guess his name, he’s take her firstborn child.
    And so one for months, every morning he’d bring her the 5 golden weaved things and she’s try to guess his name, but to no avail. By the time she was near the end of her one year sentence, she married the king and was pregnant with their child.
    One day before the end of the one year, the young woman was growing worried because she still couldn’t figure out the name of that little man. And that night, the king invited her to a dinner in the grand ball for pre-celebration of her release.
    They talked and talked, but the king could see that his wife was worried, he’d asked what was wrong but she’d say nothing. She asked him about his day and he told her about that funny thing that happened to him today while coming back from his hunting trip.
    He told her that he saw a funny young man dancing by the fire and singing an odd song “No one can guess my name it’s _-insert odd name here-_ “.
    The woman was elated. She finally figured out that little man’s name.
    That night, which was the last night of her weaving things for the king, she told the little man his name. The odd man, shocked by how she knew his name, fell on the floor and in a fit of anger, ripped himself to shreds.
    And the girl and her king (and their little baby girl) lived happily ever after...
    God I loved that book. Also if you made it this far, you’re the best!
    P.S: sorry if there is any typos I’m NOT proofreading that I’m too lazy to do so. Also, if he already talked about this in the video, I’m sorry I’m still in the beginning of the video and I’m NOT deleting that comment ever, it took way too long to write!

    I grew up with two different versions, this version is one of them. In the other version, she was told the king's proposition when he arrived home, plus the deal was for her to marry the king's son instead and, when Rumplestiltskin gave her the three days to learn his name, she went straight to her husband (he was the baby's father after all) fearing to be put to death but, the prince loved her very much and he was the one who sent out the man to learn the name, which upon learning, he told his wife. What I don't understand is, upon hearing the miller's lie, why didn't the king suspect anything amiss? .... I mean really, a miller has a daughter that can spin straw into gold yet the miller remains poor and doesn't have her spin any gold for neither themselves nor any of their neighbors or friends, yet he'll lie to the king.....Just sounds odd to me. It's always been one of my favorite fairy tales though. Nice video.

    Totally agree with you Jon, Robert Carlyle's version of Rumpelstiltskin is definitely my favourite :) The writing on that show was so good at interweaving him into every fairytale as the REAL villain, behind the wicked stepmothers and evil queens, and dastardly pirates...(and then season 7 happened, but we don' talk about season 7) :)

    In German he sings:
    "Heute back ich
    morgen brau ich
    Übermorgen hol ich mir der Königin ihr Kind.
    Ach wie gut das niemand weiß,
    das ich Rumpelstilzchen heiß."
    The last part is rhyming in german. Also the germans see the moral of Rumpelstiltsken, that you shouldn't make deals with the devil! It doesn't pay out well, because the queen can't find the solution on her own. ^^

    In Once upon a time Rumpelstiltskin was just a simple man, a coward actually, and then he became "The Dark One" by stabbing the last Dark One with the Kris dagger (which is a half of Excalibur, and the perso who has it can control The Dark One), because he wanted to protect his son, Baelfire, from the ogres war, but then the power and the darkness overwhelmed him so he become evil, and later he lost his son through a portal in our world, and than after some years he went to a kingdom to make a deal with the king, that he'll make the king win the ogres war in exchange for his daughter, Belle (yes, from The Beauty and The Beast), so he can make her his maid forever, but after some time they fell in love! That's pretty much his story, and now the thing about him the girl who had to spin straw into gold: it happened long before he met Belle, and as this girl was locked in a tower, and told that if she doesn't turn the all the straw into gold by morning she'll be killed, and than, as Rumple has a weakness for deals, he appeared in the tower and told her that he'll do the job for her in exchange for her first born child, but she told him that she wants to learn how to do it, not just he to do it, so they made the deal, he kept visiting her on the castle, and after a while they fell for each other, so he asked her if she wanted to change the deal, so she wouldn't have to give her first born child to him anymore, she had to make a child with him, she agreed, but after some time she ripped her own heart out and put it in a box so she could not be able to feel again (there, the people with magic could've ripped hearts out without killing the respective people or themselves b as long as they keep the heart they could control the person), so she tricked him and married with the king, so she was the only one who broke a deal with him, oh and also the girl was named Cora, The Queen of Hearts which is also Regina's/The Evil Queen's mother, (the one from the Snow White fairy tale), if ye'd like to watch the series, know that there is a half of season about The Dark One! I recommend it! (P.S. Idk who needed to know that but I felt like had to explain it when I got the chance :)))))

    In a creative writing class many years ago, we were asked to reimagine a well known story from a different point of view. I chose this one, and in mine, Rumplestiltskin was a sympathetic character who wanted the child to raise as his own and teach his craft to. ( I don't think I've read a version that says why he wants the child). I made the princess as a greedy and spoiled child who was prone to manipulation.
    It was fun to look at it from a different perspective.

    I think the most interesting modern retelling and my personal favorite: in elementary school I read a book called ‘Rumplestiltskin’s Daughter’. Basically in this version, when Rumple asks for her first born when she becomes queen, the Miller’s Daughter is like ‘nah, I don’t want to marry this jerk who locked me away and forced me to spin gold. But I like you, how about we get married?’ And they do and the rest of the story is about their daughter teaching the same king to not be greedy. Weird, but I always thought it was kind of sweet.

    On the third day she's starting with Hinz and Kunz which is basically the German version of Tom, Dick and Harry. "Hinz und Kunz" are as far as I know only used in that saying, I never ever heard someone being called by these names. Btw they stand for Heinrich or short Heinz and Konrad.
    About Rumpelstilzchen name:
    rumpeln = to rumble
    Stelzen = stilts
    Stilzchen = small or short stilts (referring to his legs)
    Stelzen is also linked to the German verb "stolzieren" which means to walk proudly. The story deals with narcissistic characters that use one another. The father wants to fool the king to get his daughter married to him, the daughter makes promises of giving her child away to save herself and the king is in for the gold. The most narcissistic character however is Rumpelstiltskin and he pays a price - dies by rumbling his short stilts (er rumpelt die Stilzchen).

    one of my favorite authors wrote a rumplestiltskin re-telling and it's so good. Instead of a human king, the MC lies to the Erl King (as in leader of The Wild Hunt) and tells him she can spin straw into gold as a way to distract him to protect two nymphs he was hunting. I love this version because it gives so much more life to all of the characters and makes the story really good (also, the character meant to be rumplestiltskin is literally the best version of him to exist ever.) The book series is the Gilded and Cursed duology by Marissa Meyer

    The fact, that the little man stomps his feet in the ground and ripping himself apart is because he is a demon and it was told that the name of the demons was their kryptonite to Superman. So if someone says the demons name he is defeated by this person. I don't know if they died or just went to hell again, but this is all i know about the end of Rumpelstiltskin or in german Rumpelstieltchen.

    My mum's not deaf, but she was learning sign language for a while, and my first experience of this story was watching a video cassette compilation as a child called "Story Time in Sign" where various stories were verbally narrated, as well as having a person on the screen signing the story and standing in front of (presumably) a green screen, where images to do with the story were shown. I don't know why, I just really enjoyed listening to the story and watching it in sign language as well. That's a particularly fond childhood memory of mine.

    I genuinely love these stories, when I was about 6 1/2 to 7 years old, my mother bought me a book about fairy tales because she knew that I loved them lol but it was original Grimm stories and other authors and had ones that included Cinderella getting her foot cut off by her stepmother and aerial committing suicide and becoming the foam that washes up on beaches, I was only slightly traumatized lol, but to this day I really love reading and learning about original stories, I always find it really fascinating, so thank you so much for sharing and all your hard work, I truly enjoy your videos so much ❤❤

    "Rumpelstiltskin"! :-D So funny! Didn´t know that! The name originally is "Rumpelstilzchen". That "chen" at the end is a minimization, meaning: "Little Rumpelstilz". "Rumpel" is onomatopoetical for something rumbling. The part "Stilz" is a real surname in Germany but the meaning of it is not known. So this man supposedly is Mr. Stilz who is often clattering around and Rumpestilzchen means "Little rumbling Stilz". Could be an opener in a horror series: Camera moves close to a doorbell with the name Stilz on it...
    Concerning the rhyme: In German it goes like this:
    "Heute back ich, morgen brau ich,
    übermorgen hol ich der Königin ihr Kind;
    ach, wie gut, dass niemand weiß,
    dass ich Rumpelstilzchen heiß!"
    That falls into two segments:
    "Heute back ich, morgen brau ich,
    übermorgen hol ich der Königin ihr Kind;
    " does not rhyme and is all about the rhythm and metric and the rule of three (today, tomorrow, the day after tomorrow).
    "Heute back ich, morgen brau ich,
    " is trochaic (heavy-light: _ . ).
    "übermorgen hol ich der Königin ihr Kind;" is complicated but emphasises "Kind" (child) in the metric this way: _ . . . _
    The second segment
    "ach, wie gut, dass niemand weiß,
    dass ich Rumpelstilzchen heiß!" also deals with the trochaic metrum while "Rumpelstilzchen heiß" sticks out as "Königin ihr Kind" with the same metric (_ . . . _).
    But this segment on the contrary to the former rhymes (as can be seen): "weiß" (knows) with "heiß" (is my name).
    This little piece of poetry alone shows how well the Grimms where educated and skilled (as professors for German language).
    Hope you read this, Jon: I put a bit of brain cells in here! ;-)

      About Rumpelstilzchen name:
      rumpeln = to rumble
      Stelzen = stilts
      Stilzchen = small or short stilts (referring to his legs)
