when I was first taking guitar lessons back in the 90's my teacher was great he played in a country band at the flying w ranch and taught guitar on the side. he taught me to read music and he showed me that chromatic scale practice too not slow but just being able to hit every note correctly and then he showed me speed and alternate picking to make it sound amazing. you just reminded me of that so I subscribed and will follow you. i like how you teach super chill and informative and i like the idea of slowing down and hearing what you are doing.
Yes, i will work on this. Thank you for explaining all the details so clearly. I used to study Hakkoryu jujutsu, and it was just like this. The teacher would show the martial arts moves, and it looked so simple that it was easy to dismiss. But he could throw people and do amazing things because the details were so important. Thank you!

17 years ago when I started playing (youtube taught) this kind of instruction would have made me a much better player but then again 18 year old me would probably not have understood even 1% of what I can glean from this lesson today. Thanks.

Tried this tonight. This is a lot harder to get exactly right at this lower speed than you would think. And I have done this chromatic exercise many times in the past warming up.

I could listen to you play those jazzy runs all day! To me your guitar sounds the best with no effects at all, just the pure clean tone when you play. Are you improvising those runs on the fly? I would love to learn how to play like that with such feel and dynamics! Mr. Fujita, thank you so much for all the content you post. I just subscribed! I wanted to ask... I primarily pick single-notes with upstrokes. I always have. It took me a long time to realize no one else really was. Downstrokes only occur for (most) chords, as well as when I'm playing multiple single-notes in quick succession. So, my question is, do you think it's worth it to adjust my technique after playing for multiple years? (I'm very mediocre, btw, but I try)

I really like that exercise and use a slightly spiced-up version. Instead of 1-2-3-4 | 2-3-4-5 i play 1-2-3-4 | 3-2-3-4 | 5-4-3-4 | 5-6-5-4 ... 12. As i tend to maken noises when switching directions. Also, I alternate down, up, and alternate picking.
Hello, I just wanted to say thank you for your lessons. I’m just beginning after trying to learn on a right handed guitar (I’m a lefty). I have an acoustic and electric now and I’m starting to practice more often. Even tracking it in my planner, so if I miss a few days at least I know where I left off instead of feeling discouraged. Your lessons have been so helpful in my understanding and appreciation of music theory and practice. Especially your more philosophical tips and clear enjoyment of playing. It should be fun, it can be magical. Playing with the pedals reminds me of having fun and exploring keyboard settings when practicing exercises when I was younger. Would you suggest using a small step for the leg the guitar rests on while practicing to make keeping good posture take less focus? Thanks again

I have a Caroline Guitar Hawaiian Pizza fuzz pedal that does a similar "buzzy / gatey" effect -- they do this by one of the knobs controlling how much voltage is choked out of the signal making it only responsive to certain frequencies at certain amplitudes to get through.
There is a massive difference between accuracy and precision....just ask a professional golfer. I appreciate this technique. Thanks for the reminder Tomo!!
@@Guitarman2 in golf terms, accuracy is hitting your approach on the green, precision would be hitting the ball to a specific spot on the green to allow it to stop 15 feet or less from the hole. Tomo, shows what that looks like when playing guitar in these kind of videos.
@@Guitarman2 Accuracy and precision are two measures of observational error. Accuracy is how close or far off a given set of measurements are to their true value, while precision is how close or dispersed the measurements are to each other.
Sometimes for this it helps to ascend the first four frets on a string and then descend, but then go to the next string. Doing this up and down a half step at a time can help.🎸
I’m using this practice technique now. Just curious, where are your tone knobs set on the guitar and amp during this lesson? I also use a Fender Musicmaster Bass Amp.
Tomo, how can I practice trying to play what I can sing/hear in my head in a structured way. With my voice I have total freedom and I can sing whatever comes to mind, but I don't have that same freedom on guitar. Do I just sit in first position and try to play phrases while singing them over and over until it clicks?
You need to prepare with triads so that you can hear basic intervals much clearly. Prepare something, then apply that into music.. then you can practice , play things well. Not easy to process this.
Sorry if this is a dumb question but when playing and muting, should we try to avoid muting the string below? I can’t mute the string above with my index finger while not muting the one below. Also thanks for the amazing video. This was very helpful :)
Chromatic Scale not easy to get it perfect to sound good and the notes to flow right -- how long does it take to get this right all the patterns ????? few months ?
when i take bending and use my fretting hand to mute all the other high strings , the string i press is tend to slip away , does that mean my pressing string method is weird? i must take a loong time to change this for my rake technique,,,
Use both hands to mute any notes that could ring. You can search best techniques that you can use. Less pressure is must. Thank you for sharing! Just hit a note softly without laking.
But hendrix and keith Richard's played all the time like that so they were unbelievably good. Having a solid foundation is key, then you can break the rules
would you say then that rhythm is more important than melody ? weirdly enough I always knew that I can better my tapping or sense of time by just paying more attention but never liked the concept of practice since practice should be connected to everything as well and not just positions and general flexibility

I have a Caroline Guitar Hawaiian Pizza fuzz pedal that does a similar "buzzy / gatey" effect -- they do this by one of the knobs controlling how much voltage is choked out of the signal making it only responsive to certain frequencies at certain amplitudes to get through.

@@Guitarman2 in golf terms, accuracy is hitting your approach on the green, precision would be hitting the ball to a specific spot on the green to allow it to stop 15 feet or less from the hole. Tomo, shows what that looks like when playing guitar in these kind of videos.

Sometimes for this it helps to ascend the first four frets on a string and then descend, but then go to the next string. Doing this up and down a half step at a time can help.🎸
Another way to try would be to play the first two notes like they are together and then the next two the same but try to time the space between.

Tomo, how can I practice trying to play what I can sing/hear in my head in a structured way. With my voice I have total freedom and I can sing whatever comes to mind, but I don't have that same freedom on guitar. Do I just sit in first position and try to play phrases while singing them over and over until it clicks?
You need to prepare with triads so that you can hear basic intervals much clearly. Prepare something, then apply that into music.. then you can practice , play things well. Not easy to process this.

when i take bending and use my fretting hand to mute all the other high strings , the string i press is tend to slip away , does that mean my pressing string method is weird? i must take a loong time to change this for my rake technique,,,
Use both hands to mute any notes that could ring. You can search best techniques that you can use. Less pressure is must. Thank you for sharing! Just hit a note softly without laking.

would you say then that rhythm is more important than melody ? weirdly enough I always knew that I can better my tapping or sense of time by just paying more attention but never liked the concept of practice since practice should be connected to everything as well and not just positions and general flexibility
Without rhythm... no melody... Somewhat it should have melodic rhythmic sense in your playing. Pure hardwork is always important!
