Mosul Residents Are Rebuilding The Demolished City On Their Own (HBO)

  • July marked a year since Iraq declared Mosul to be completely liberated from ISIS - but much of the city is still in ruins.
With the fighting over, the world's interest in Mosul has waned, so too have international commitments to help with the massive task of rebuilding.
Iraq says it needs $88 billion to repair all the damage caused during the battle to drive Islamic State fighters from the country. So far, it's only received a fraction of that - and the U.S. has said it won't help with the shortfall.
On the ground, it means there are still neighborhoods that are ghost towns, with block after block of destroyed homes and endless piles of rubble yet to be removed. It’s estimated that the bombardment of Mosul left more than 10 million tons of debris behind.
For many Mosul residents, the process of trying to rebuild their lives is swamped in dysfunction or bureaucracy - and frustration is beginning to rise.
"The U.S. and all countries who caused this war have a moral duty to reconstruct this area," Mosul resident Bandar al-Akidi told VICE News. "The U.S. paid millions of dollars to buy weapons and missiles to wage war on this region and liberate it by any means. It should equally pay millions of dollars to reconstruct it."

Vice, the technology exists to crush rubble concrete so it can be recycled and used again. Some of these crushers are portable. It would be a good idea to raise money or ask construction companies to sponsor sending some of those machines to Iraq and Syria.

Pedro Rodriguez Well, that’s a sticky situation, if we’re dealing in shoulds, this shouldn’t have happened in the first place. You’re right though, the coalition that dropped bombs should definitely allocate money and effort to reconstruction, if the US hadn’t elected Trump, I think we may have seen that done.

I was just thinking that.. I believe their biggest problem is not in infrastructure, is the idiology that still remains and will be used as an excuse. These idiologies will work as a cancer to this part of the world and which will serve as a threat to happen again. They shouldn't start pointing fingers and instead learn to look forward and realize it's an opportunity that destiny has given the survivors to turn a city around. I would protote open mind thinking, technology and world competitiveness. ITS HARDER TO CHANGE A CITY THAT ALREADY EXIST THAN ONE THAT IS BEING REBORN. New generations should embrace this and encourage it. The older generation aren't going to do it. Just look at Israel (Wired documentary) what the millennials have done.

Cosmin Iancu the feds have made big business out of supplying, protecting, arming, and training populations in conflict zones. These business practices date very far back pretty much to the Korea invasion. These business practices are the foundation for terrorism as well as the countless endless wars and conflicts that our tax dollars and military personnel are subjected to. Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria and I assure you all the other places the feds do business. Sure these places might have fucked up beliefs but our federal government operating in places they don’t belong is why terrorism is around. You’re just brainwashed to call a “revolting” populist “terrorist” bc they simply resisted and attacked in any means necessary. Would you not resist?

From Bush senior over his junior till Obama, Iraq was only a playground to test new weapons and sell the old ones. After this awful game and devastation of Iraq is time to pay back money for reconstruction. Not only for buildings. They are responsible also for recovery of humans they "collateraly" have destroyed. This cost much more.

America should pay for Mosul’s reconstruction but not by that guys logic. We should pay for it because we’re decent human being who can easily afford it not because we started the war or because our air strikes caused the damage. We didn’t cause ISIS to come about, in the 2000s we caused causes of ISIS’ emergence in part but not in whole. ISIS came about because of Iraqi sectarianism, lack of loyalty to the central government and corruption. Did the US worsen these issues? Yes, but we didn’t make ISIS impose medieval rule in Mosul and we were asked by Iraq to conduct air strikes.

its really rare to see a sane person on youtube, everyone seems to be some kind of conspiracy freak, but its always easier to point into others direction and somehow it has become a trend to blame the US for everything that happens

I just love the comments: "the US should do this... the US should do that..." why don't you do something? take YOUR money and donate it so they can rebuild the city. Why do the Americans need to pay for that and not you?
EDIT: and what more annoying is those 2 guys. The US came for a military aid, nothing else. Without their "million dollar weapons" (which you government didn't have) you wouldn't have a city to rebuild.

because your country destroyed iraq and stole its natural resources...? iraq had no terrorism problem at ALL, and we had no sectarianism.
we had free healthcare, free education, cheap housing. can you, as an american, say the same?

    • @Electropretzel
      @Electropretzel 5 лет назад

I feel like you have not served in an army so let me explain this to you: First of all, no country just walks into another and start bombing... the airstrikes the US performed are by explicit request of the Iraqi military so if there is anyone to blame it's the Iraqi military that requested those airstrikes exactly at those houses. Second, I'm not an American so my country didn't bomb anything in Iraq. I just can't handle the fact that almost everyone want the "American money" like it's a money factory. That money comes from the American people and those people don't need to pay for shit.

The US helped the Iraqi army bomb ISIS, now they want the US to rebuild everything too?
Do you know who called most of these air strikes? The Iraqi soldiers themselves. They prefer American bombs to do most of the work which is why the city was so heavily damaged. Not even Fallujah in 2006 look this bad when American soldiers were retaking a city. The Iraqi soldiers are more reliant on air power than US soldiers.
The Iraqi army failed to defend an entire city when they outnumbered a couple of men with pick up trucks, the Iraqi army nearly fell apart when those same guys in pick up trucks rode all around North Western Iraq taking even more territory. There are loads of footage of armor, uniforms and equipment just laying on the floor and Iraqi soldiers being executed by the thousands.
When they were retaking the city of Mosul their most elite unit prefer to sit in the armored vehicles while ISIS surrounded them and pick them off until they panic retreat, so they level each block before they took each step. This is why Mosul is destroyed.

hi, i'm from mosul. in this video, you only see the old city of mosul. most (like 75-80%) of our city is completely rebuilt and everythings back to normal. however old mosul is the most affected part of the city since ISIS made their last stand here as they were surrounded.
