  • It's been 20 years since American and coalition forces invaded Iraq on a mission to topple Saddam Hussein’s dictatorship and find weapons of mass destruction.
Within three weeks, Saddam's regime had fallen, but no stockpiles of nuclear, chemical or biological weapons were ever found.
By the time US troops left in 2011, the insurgency that followed the invasion had claimed the lives of more than 100,000 Iraqi civilians, while US losses reached nearly 4,500.
Now a semblance of normalcy has returned, but Iraq still battles a range of challenges, from political instability to poverty and rampant corruption. Our next report takes a look at today's Iraq.

Iraq was somewhat screwed from the start. When Britain carved it out of the Ottoman Empire, they left its water supply controlled by Turkey and Syria, which got dammed for crops. They cut off its port with Kuwait. They also separated the ethnicities into semi-autonomous states. This caused extreme desperation and tribalism among some in Iraq

All they did was unleash the sectarian divides present in the country. The only ways to fix Iraq brings the country back to square one with Baathism or the Hashemite dynasty's monarchy, both of which the US would really hate to implement. They made the same mistake in Afghanistan, opting against reinstating the (popular) monarchy and went for the good feelz of erecting another bound-to-fail democracy somewhere where it had no business existing.
